Happy Halloween!
I added a lot of updates to my RTS game, including new neutral units, bombard towers, and new eco upgrades! There’s a green glow over the screen when the full moon rises and specters spawn. I’m thinking about doing more stuff like that cause I really like it, what do you think?
There’s a demo of the game on Steam if you’re interested.
I'm looking for a rts game that plays like factorio, rimworld, dwarf fortress etc, where you manage your base, explore, build an army and expand by the map, is it a thing?
And I don't mean some gacha P2W bullshit.
I want WCIII or something similar that is perpetual and online. I want it to be tactical and real, not pay to win, not login to win, not time played to win, actual tactics and skills involved.
If it doesn't exist, maybe I'll make it (I'm busy) but I feel like I can't be the first person to have thought of this.
Is there anyone here who still plays American conquest and would like to play together sometime?
Hello r/RealTimeStrategy!
Very proud to announce Rogues Don't Cry is out on Steam now!
My name is Olivier, I'm a solo dev from Canada. Been working on my passion project which is inspired by games like Age of Wonders and tons of roguelikes like Crawl Soup and some RTS thrown in there.
The result is maybe a new genre, a quick pace roguelike with army building and real time battles. This is really an experimental game and I took a lot of risks making it! Especially since the difficulty is a bit high and it's aimed at experienced gamers.
Hope you try it and definitely leave feedback!
Oh yeah, it has the best graphics in the history of gaming, just so you know.

How do you do, everyone?
We’re PJ GAMES, an indie team passionate about base-building strategies, and The Whims of the Gods is our first project. Inspired by older classics such as Age of Mythology and the Pharaoh series — as well as more recent ones like Frostpunk and Against the Storm — we wanted to do our take on the genre with a little twist by making it a cooperative experience! After all, what’s better than building up a bustling metropolis than doing it with a friend at your side? :)
At its core, The Whims of the Gods is a city management game whose themes and aesthetics are significantly influenced by a blend of Mesoamerican (and other) cultures — particularly Mayan and Aztec — but also brimming with fantastical, non-historical elements of our own design. That is to say, the game has quite a bit of mythological and fantastical flair to it that takes it out of the realm of realism, but more importantly — makes the setting fun and whimsical!

The Whims of the Gods is still a work in progress, but we’re giving it our best shot to make a unique base building & city management experience with a distinctive setting that we hope will be as interesting to you as it is to us. All are to be enjoyed ideally in co-op, although we also plan on releasing a single-player campaign alongside the co-op mode.
Even though we don’t have an official date yet, the Early Access version of the game will be coming soon and we do hope you’ll stay along for the ride. In the meantime, feel free to tell us what you think of the game’s concept and give constructive criticism — since we’re still a very small team, every bit of feedback helps us in realizing this project!
Thank you all very much in advance for your notice,
and much love from the team over at PJ GAMES!

I saw that MoW2 released an update bringing offline solo play along with some QoL features AND at 25% off. I got excited and started searching through the recent reviews. Unfortunately it seems the general consensus has yet to change.
Apparently infantry animations and pathfinding still need work and players seem upset they can't control individual units. Many have mentioned also being disappointed at there only being 3 factions to choose from as well as multiplayer being "dead".
Even with these mixed reviews I was still hopeful, so I went to Twitch to watch some live gameplay and decide whether to buy it or not... But there were 0 people streaming it and not a single broadcast in the last 24 hours.
I'm baffled that this is the state of the game after being 25% off and the devs answering the biggest complaint of the game ('always-online').
My question to the community is what needs to change for you to purchase Men of War 2 (or play it again)?
What game has a larger newbie pool so that I can join?
Context: StarCraft 1 was the first PC game I ever played back in 1999. I tried the campaigns of StarCraft 1 and Warcraft 3, and in 2019 had a very short but traumatic try with StarCraft 2 online (tower rushed).
Do you prefer singleplayer or multiplayer? Do people still play online?
PS: since I personally don't like modern warfare and the poll has a very limited number of options, I haven't included Command&Conquer, Company of Heroes, etc. , but feel free to comment these.
I can think of some like:
Alien Dark Descent
Commandos Origin
Even Two Point Hospital remotely looks like it can be interesting even though you can't control the people.
I think having a SIMS - like game where you can control multiple people Indoors would be interesting from just a 'fulfilling a fantasy' point of view.
I'm trying to remember the name of a game that maybe came out in the late 90s. I think a demo of it came with Red Alert 1. It's like Commandos, but with fantasy. I only played the demo, there were zombies and red caps (or were they brownies), and you could cast spells and eat on apple. I was like 6 at the time so I only remember those details.
I'm as old as Starcraft so yah I was to young when they came out to actually play them nor had I gotten a PC yet. After finishing All the C&C games (idk if im gonna even play 4) I got that "Oh shit now wtf do I do" feeling so I'm asking to see what other classic RTS games I missed out on I should play.
I've played all Warcraft, Starcraft, C&C and some of the stronghold games (fuggin love stronghold cuase its what got me into RTS) but there have gotta be some I've missed.
Update: OMG thank you so much for the replies I knew there had to be good stuff I hadn't played yet <3
I finally got procedural generation working on my upcoming game, Endvasion. I know it doesn’t look like much right now but the random generation and the triggers took a lot of time.
I’m mostly aiming at "older" RTS games but anything goes really, so long as it hit that good spot and kept you coming back months/years later to relive that first hit. Bonus points if it’s something that has aged incredibly well graphics wise (evergreen), has a decently long campaign mode and isn’t too reliant on multiplayer because that can draw out your gametime to infinity (as SC2 did in my case and AoE2 long before that so they’d take the cake way too easily hahaha).
The games I loved instantly and returned to the most over the years are usually in the old-but-gold category since for most of my gaming life, I’ve had a sub-par rig or a laptop. I’ve also had my stuff stolen from me during my college days, so you can imagine. Warcraft 3 takes the cake when it comes to the campaign alone, though. I’ve replayed it dozens upon dozens of times, and still think it’s one of the best when it comes to how well paced each race’s story is and how it flows from one into the next. Just superb. Next I’d probably give it to Stronghold Crusader, which my older bro got me when I was like 7 — and all these years later, even disregarding all the different re-releases, it’s still the peak of classical base building to me. Ngl if it wasn’t for this one, I don’t think Diplomacy is not an option would have had the same charm for me. And finally, Age of Mythology which I feel obliged to mention because of the Retold remaster that really does it justice. Also great pacing, basically not requiring the tutorial (which is nonetheless there), great variety between factions and how each plays is so unique that I don’t think even Warcraft 3 or Starcraft 2 compare to it on a tactical level. Just felt much more complex to me, even if the multiplayer was quite… unbalanced in the original game.
These are just the “love at first sight” games though, I have many more (like the whole C&C and Red Alert series) that I only appreciated after multiple tries. I just have a harder time getting into a modern times-based strategy than those set in historical and/or mythological and fantastical settings.
I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask. I absolutely love travian but it's way too time consuming. I love the fact that out of all these types of games I've played it's the most team oriented and least pay to win (though still plenty p2w relative to other genres).
Wanted your thoughts on alternatives. I've seen grepolis and other browser type games from this era. But they are all much smaller player base wise and often more pay to win.
Would love a mobile game like that. But those all tend to be heavy p2w.
