r/BrisbaneSocial

Where the tunnels are being dug, and it doesn't get cold, and every other thread now seems to get trolled. Where the river is brown and the traffic is tight and police will tase you if you're looking to fight.

Where George St holds the state's people of power and brothels are plentiful and charge by the hour. Where the dust settles for an Eastern coast rest and parking in the city is a hell of a test.

Where buses and bikes rule with a cold, iron fist and trains may as well not have a time-list. Where there's lockouts in clubs that cause more strain and hundreds of drunken louts stuck out in the rain.

Despite all its flaws, the fact does remain it's an awesome city, and is far from being lame.

Beautiful Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland. Please please please don't swim in the river.

Off-topic trolling, derogatory remarks, and general unpleasantness will be removed. Please report any offensive comments.

Group of young adult(uni students) looking to rent out

All 3 of us do not own a car and we are trying to rent a place that is reasonably close to a bus station that goes to UQ st lucia. There is so much competition in property inspections, competing with full on adults that have a family/already have a family... what are the odds landlords would even take us? We all have our own source of income and is financially stable.

Just need some advice to hopefully get an edge to others also looking to rent a full property.

Our budget would be around $300 per person per week, so in total $900pw, and of course hopefully lower. Any more would kinda suck.

MacBook screen repair in Brisbane

Hi all,

Our lovely kitten has decided to break a second MacBook screen this time our 2019 Air.

We’re shopping around and finding it cheaper to buy another second hand MacBook off Marketplace than replace our screen, any recommendations for reliable/cheap repair stores will be greatly appreciated :)

Impossible to find a psychiatrist.

I have been diagnosed with depression and binge eating disorder. I have spoken to multiple psychologists, counsellors, tried four different high-level medications, and several BED programs. I go through spouts where I try my best and eat right or exercise, doing everything that I can to beat these demons, with no support from anyone else.

I am stepping it up and trying to find a dedicated psychiatrist who can hopefully work with me to find the right medication for me, as all others simply stop working after a few weeks.

I have been told by several receptionists that they've passed on my GP referral to the psychiatrist weeks ago now, and those were the ones that actually bothered responding to me, of the few that were actually contactable. Of the ones that have not even replied, their openings are not for months anyway...

Why is it so difficult to find a psychiatrist? I am willing and fortunate enough to pay (I mean let's not even get into the ridiculous prices for support for mental health, I'm one of the lucky ones), but can't find anyone.

Let me make this very clear - If someone is looking for a psychiatrist, they are most likely in the middle of a critical, dangerous state of mind and require assistance sooner than later. If someone is looking for a psychiatrist, they are probably not able to hold on for months to see someone.

Does no one understand this?

My current medication isn't working, I've given up on myself and every day is hell. Why is it so hard to sit down and speak to another human being?

New City Bus Shelters.

Are about as useless as an ashtray on a motorcycle. In yesterday's rain, they offered about only 30% protection. A slight wind blows the rain in from the sides. No protection from the rear, both sides and front!

Petting zoo?

What are some decent petting zoo places you can go an interact with animals such as feed them and hug them? Ideally Southside Brisbane but open to other areas up to 1.5hr drive if there’s lots of animals and lots of petting?

If you can please put price and business name and any other cute information you have about the animals

End of year venue

Looking for a place to go for a staff lunch - requirements are for 12 people. Ideally a place we can sit and have a meal and a drink, that has space for us to sit together and do things like Secret Santa and Trivia Games. Will need to be near public transport and have parking. Bonus points if it’s near another venue we can go after to do an activity like darts etc afterwards for those who want to - thanks!

Removalist wants to drop it off the next day, is this a real thing?

It's been a while since using a removalist service, 7 years roughly. Been mostly moving around overseas and doing my first move after being back in the country after a couple years.

Forgetting the painful process of packing and moving, I stupidly stayed up all night preparing and haven't had a wink of sleep.

The removalist was running late on a job, no problems at all, there was a storm in the middle of the day and I'm sure people shoot below the estimate sometimes and I did book the afternoon slot, so I thought these things can run behind occasionally. When they arrived, I signed and paid and they vsaid it might run to midnight, which I'm sleepy but I just wanted the process done so I didn't mind and said it was fine, during the loading process they said they'll drop it off tomorrow morning. This wasn't something discussed in the calls earlier or during signing and I'm trying to juggle pets too.

I managed to negotiate them dropping just the bed off and picking up some of the pets belongings around.

But mostly, never hearing about this before, is this a common thing? Will the stuff actually arrive in the morning.

I'm very awkward and nonconfrontational so I went along with it. I guess mostly I just want to ease the nights anxiety being in an empty house that my items will actually arrive in the morning. Heck, it doesn't even need to be at the break of dawn, as long as it comes and I can sleep in a bed 😅

Can't tell if I'm running on the no-sleep delusionals or not, just wondering if this is a common thing and why isn't it discussed prior to the immediate decision. I've just never heard of it before

Why is renting a room now $300 and above??

I don’t know how long I’m going to survive if the prices keep going up on everything.. in my area it’s $300 and above just to rent a room! Most are not inclusive of bills either. Not to mention, it’s under the table and no official ‘approved tenant’ or lease signing. Which means they have all rights to kick you out whenever they want😢 I’m struggling so hard right now, where I’m getting less then $500 a week and I’m currently paying $295 a week for rent which means I’m left with barely anything😭

Helmet laws

Most people I see these days riding a bike have no helmet. Unless they’re proper dressed up cyclists. Have any of you guys ever been caught out for not wearing a helmet on a bike?

Seen from the bicentennial bike path, looking towards West End. I saw it about 7:50pm. Sorry for the low quality photo, while I enhanced it, the blue colour was obvious. WTF is it?

Council promises January Metro relaunch following CBD tunnel milestone

As drilling under Brisbane’s CBD for the council’s Metro network wraps up, the Brisbane City Council has promised a return of services through the city routes, permanently, from January 28 next year, citing a “landmark” deal with the state government.

The services were expected to run the 66 bus route in five-minute intervals along the existing Queen Street Mall tunnel from January 28, then reroute through the new Adelaide Street tunnel in the second half of 2025.

Brisbane City Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said it was “really exciting” to reveal an opening date for the Brisbane Metro “for the very first time”.

The announcement comes after last month the Metro’s one-month trial running services along the 169 route rolled to a quiet stop at the end of the university semester, leading to criticisms that the Brisbane City Council had not properly labelled the trial.

The council transport chair Ryan Murphy apologised to “anyone who feels that they’ve been misled” on 4BC following the trial’s end.

Schrinner said negotiating with the state government had contributed to a lack of transparency around the Metro’s rollout.

“Last year, we were hoping to strike a deal with the former government to get these services up and running, and the time frame was never locked in,” he said.

“Thankfully, the new premier has come in, the new transport minister has come in, they’ve rolled up their sleeves and done the deal, and we’ve got a date.”

Premier David Crisafulli said he “couldn’t think of a better person to work with than the Lord Mayor”.

“We’ve promised a fresh start when it comes to working with local government,” Crisafulli said.

“To know the vision that [Schrinner] has to ensure that people can move around a growing city and do so with minimal impact in our life is something that we want to get involved with.”

Crisafulli added the Metro was part of his government’s goal to deliver public transport across the state that was “not just affordable but also reliable, frequent and safe.”

The council reported the “highly successful” 169 Metro trial had transported more than 90,000 passengers across the four-week period, where 94 per cent of services ran on-time.

Opening its official Metro launch with the M2 route, Schrinner said the M1 would open from the second quarter of 2025 alongside an upgrade to Brisbane’s bus network which was expected to add 160,000 bus services across the city.

“In quarter three, we’ll also make a switch from five-minute frequencies during peak to three minute frequencies,” Schrinner said.

“So, this will be the highest frequency service that Queensland has ever had … this will be a real game changer.”

Beyond 2025, the council planned to begin business cases to expand the Metro to Carseldine, Springwood, Capalaba and the airport.

The Metro rollout timeline follows the state government following through on its election pledge to make 50¢ fares permanent across the state – which was expected to include Metro services.

Need some wireless earbud recommendations for our sweaty summer. Currently rocking bose quiet comforts but during times of high stress - dead lifts or running they just fall out. Id love to start doing some more out door runs, though I don’t like the idea of trampling a $400 set of earbuds.
