Dungeons & Dragons is called a “tabletop role playing game” which is actually people around a table having fun making up a heroic story. It’s like a board game, as you take turns and roll dice, but it’s unlimited and the story evolves in whatever direction the players push it. It can be silly, immersive, or gritty, and often really intriguing.. kind of like being IN the show Game of Thrones (the good early seasons) as a character, but there is no single author and nobody knows how it will go.
In past years a lot of people came to this event after reading about it on Reddit. We've done this in Brisbane and Melbourne, now sparking it up in Hobart.
A lot of people want to try D&D but are afraid they don’t know the rules already, or think they need to be good at acting. So I have run a basic “Introduction to D&D” event series annually for the last several years that draws a lot of people. That’s enough to learn the very basics. If you go to that event, you get the option to do a followup session with me in the same location. All the players start off knowing absolutely nothing about how to play, and by the end are ready to play beginner D&D with any friendly organiser group. So this is an ideal way to try out D&D without any commitment.
It's run with a Meetup group. The free kickoff event is Tuesday 7 January, 6PM, at Good Games in Hobart. Get details here: https://www.meetup.com/learn-dungeons-and-dragons/events/305342683/
If you already have played any D&D at all, the intro is too basic for you-- and when we do the followup session, we fill it up with only those who have NEVER had any fun rolling weird D&D dice before. But that Meetup group also runs heaps of events where people beyond the absolute beginner stage can form into new groups. For now the events center in Brisbane, but starting to get active in Melbourne and Hobart too, so consider joining it. The group is totally non-profit and never charges a fee for any event.
Looking to buy but have some complications to deal with. Need a lawyer who knows their way around Council BS Cheers!
Hi here, I've always wanted to visit Tasmania for dark mofo and this year is looking like the year.
I'm looking at air bnbs and as I've yet to visit Tasmania I'm not sure what's a good central location / ease of access to transport etc are.
I have found one i like in Mount Stuart / north Hobart.
Would a hotel in the cbd be better maybe?
I'm probably going to hire a car so I can visit some of the country (is this evening a good idea in winter?)
I have no family or friends in Tasmania so any tips would be greatly appreciated :)
Eastern shore - all gone by noon in 3 major stores! What's the deal? Why are the shelves so barren?
Hello, Is there a workshop near CBD that is looking for an apprentice? I am an adult(M30) with zero qualification in this field but I am willing to learn, responsible and has good work ethic.
Hey Hobfam,
Just checking if anyone has experience with couple personal training? Bf and I would love to get fit with a great teacher out side of the gym.
Kindly,
Popinjay
Eating at the Taste every day is an after-Xmas indulgence for my family. Thoughts on this year’s offerings:
I do miss the days when there were more food and drink related events – cooking demos, talks etc.
What's the average price for a filling? I'm booked to go to island dental and they're charging nearly 300 a filling :(
Hey guys.. know it's last minute and chances are slim to none.. but hoping I can score a ticket for taste of summer tonight. Happy to pay a little above face value, homies miscounted when buying tickets and don't want our mate to miss out 😅
Feel free to comment or DM me. Can PayPal or meet with cash
Also have a tixel going if that's easier https://tixel.com/u/callumd112
As the title says, I need help locating my water meter. Since I moved in (4+ years ago) I've only ever received estimate bills for water.
Taswater can't/won't help. I've done a search on the List and through Tas Networks. I was told there are companies who do locater services - does anyone know who they are?
At this stage I have to assume the meter has been buried under a garden bed, but don't want to dig up the entire garden trying to find it.
Any suggestions would be helpful - TIA!
Looking for two tickets for the Taste of Summer Hobart for NYE if anyone is reselling!🙂 https://tixel.com/u/lisam401
Hello !
I'm not sure where to post it.
I'm looking for NGOs, / groups of people raising awareness or gathering data about the use of pesticides in Tasmania (or even whole Australia)
Since I moved here (4 months ago, from Europe) I found very little information about it though it is very difficult to find organic (labelled or just chemical-free) food (raw or processed) in town. I finally found farms and a grocery store selling organic products in Hobart.
When I talk to people working in farming / landscaping / and even wildlife conservation (!) I was told that "sometimes you have to use chemicals" (landscaping) / "this poison vanishes after it kills the 'weed'(meaning introduced species)" (conservation). The idea that local food = good food seems also to be widespread (i.e. trusting local farmers in providing the 'community' with good food even if it is not chemical-free)
I couldnt find any Australian scientific study about :
- soil pollution (and therefore destruction of fungi/arthropods/bacteria in the soil) due to use of chemicals;
- destruction of wildlife and especially arthropods / dipteras due to chemicals;
- freshwater pollution due to pesticides drained into the rivers;
- impact on human health (liver cancer, Parkinson disease, endocrine disruptors..)
Though there are many farms that produce chemical-free / organic veggies (at least in the region of Hobart, I dont know much about the rest of Tasmania), so I suppose there's interest for stopping using chemicals ?
Thank you in advance for your recommendations and sorry for this muddled post!
So me and my mum were eating on one of the benches and these two (one male, one female, probably mid-30s, and european based on their accent) went up to us and placed their drinks on our table, told us to scoot over even tho there is no space left.
The woman got irritated but since me and my mum aren't the confrontational type we just got up to move somewhere else. Then the dude tugged my mum's hair as she was getting up, causing her to spill her food. Fortunately I caught her cuz she had a fall accident a while back and her lower back isn't in great condition.
I tried to argue with the dude but my english-speaking is not that good and coupled with my emotions that time, I can't make coherent words.
The people around us probably didn't notice or they did not help us. We tried to report it but since we lost sight of the couple, we're not sure if the staff even did their job.
:( not going back again. Oh and overpriced stuff. The tacos we had were so dissappointing, and I observed some of the stallholders picking their nose, switching to their phone, coughing on hand, and then handling/assembling the food.
Hello again!
Thank you for those who replied to my last post!
I've come up with a rough draft for my itinerary. I'll be traveling solo too. Please let me know if these are doable or if there could be any improvements made/suggestions. I'm still unsure of what other major things I could visit while I'm in the city. Are there any night activities that I should be aware of? My accommodation will be in the city. Cheers!
WED: Arrive in Hobart
THURS: Hikes to Kunyayi/Mt Wellington

Hey all!
Looking to take my puppo somewhere new for varieties sake. He’s a medium-sized rescue with lots of energy (and a bit of sass), so we’re hoping to find places with nice trails, open spaces, or maybe even spots where other dog lovers hang out.
Are there any favorite parks, off-leash areas, or scenic walks you’d rec? Bonus points if it's a spot where it's easy to grab a coffee afterward!
Is there anywhere in the Hobart area where my son and I can access the internet on a Saturday afternoon? We would like to practice for his driving learners permit.
Hi Hobart,
I plan to drive to Gordon Dam from Hobart tomorrow in my 2010 Corolla. Is the road steep, and does it require a 4WD? Is my car suitable for this road?
Thank you!
Hi got bunch of used blister packs and was wondering if there’s any place that I can drop to recycle them?
Not sure if Blooms the chemist Hobart still collects them?
Thanks!
Hi r/hobart!
I'm travelling from South Aus (SA) to TAS in Feb for 5 days with my SO and we're planning to rent a car to go around. The problem is I'm currently a P plater (P1 - red P plate - driver's license from SA, but I'm over 25) so would yall know any rentals that would allow P platers from interstate to rent a car? Thanks in advance!
So, I've just finished a Certificate 3 in Conservation and Ecosystem Management here in Melbourne, and I'm now at that point where I'm trying to figure out what's next.
A couple of weeks ago I applied for the Certificate II in Animal Care that the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary offer, and I've just been told that my application has successfully progressed to the interview stage, and that based on my initial application, if the interview goes well, I'll be offered a spot in the course.
Here's the thing though, if I am successful, and I choose to accept, it will require me to relocate to Hobart from Melbourne, full time, and I guess I'm just wondering whether the Certificate 2, and the subsequent Certificate 3 they offer is worth that, as opposed to just doing the exact same qualifications at the various universities here in Melbourne that offer it.
The big selling point for Bonorong is that they offer you something that those aforementioned universities just can't offer, and that's work placements, as well as hands-on experience, something that in the conservation industry, is going to look very good on a resume.
And aside from all of that, Bonorong, and the work that they do there is incredible. The on-site Wildlife Hospital that they have is doing absolutely crucial work, especially with the work they're doing specifically with Tasmanian Devils and the research into the Devil Facial Tumour Disease.
Studying at Bonorong would very much be a privilege, especially given the industry I'm looking to get into.
Buuuuuuut, again, relocating an entire family isn't cheap, and ultimately, these two courses consecutively only take about a year. I feel like if I'm going to put all of the effort and resources into moving to Hobart, it's very much a long-term investment.
What do you guys think?
