La Trobe Med Students Chat

Ok so it’s a bit late, but what are the chances of finding a current student studying medicine at La Trobe (even better if they were in the aspire program), who can provide some guidance on interviews, one on one mmi tutoring kind of thing?

Considering Switching from Bachelor of Biomedical Science to Biomedicine at La Trobe – Is It Too Late?

Hey everyone,

I've decided to study a Bachelor of Biomedical Science, but I’ve been thinking about the possibility of switching to a Bachelor of Biomedicine if I find that I’m not enjoying the course or if I feel that it would align better with my long-term goal of studying postgraduate medicine. I’m curious about how feasible this switch would be and whether it would be a smooth process.

The main reason I’m considering switching is the campus location. The Bachelor of Biomedical Science is based in Bendigo, while the Bachelor of Biomedicine is in Melbourne, which I prefer. I’m aware that I have an unconditional offer for the Bachelor of Biomedical Science at La Trobe, but since it’s already late in the application process and I’m eager to start the visa application, I’m concerned about whether requesting a course change now would lead to significant delays in my visa process.

I’d love to hear from current or past students at La Trobe or anyone with experience in switching courses. What do you think I should do? Is it too late to make the switch, and would it be worth considering now, or should I stay with my current offer and potentially look at switching later if needed?

Thanks in advance for your input!

International Students: How did your financial assessment and interview go?

Basically the title. I’m more curious on what to expect, if it makes any difference I’m planning on going to the Bundoora campus. What should I be preparing for in the interview? What are they looking for in the financial assessment and is the financial assessment separate from the genuine student assessment?

Teaching Placements without a license

Hi guys,

I'm applying/ filling out the form for my teaching placements next year, and I won't have my license by the time I start my first round of placements? Any idea what this means? I know I still will have placements but any advice and anyone else who has done teaching rounds without a license? Thanks in advance!

SHA accomodation in MacLeod

Has anybody's tried the 116-130 Main Dr, Macleod accomodate with SHA? I'm looking to move around Jan/Feb. I don't need a very big place, so space isn't an issue. Other than that, how are the appartments, management and inspections? Are they flexible with students visiting home for more than a month? Would be great if I can an insight? Also, pictures and vidoes of the single studio, double studio and large studio will be greatly appreciated!!

Any Current/Past Speech Pathology Students?

I'm going to be starting a master of speech pathology in 2025 and I'm looking to get a bit of a head start on studying, especially the anatomy. Could anyone recommend some resources (especially anki/Quizlet decks) which are good for the speech pathology anatomy course?

Also, I'd be interested to hear what the placement schedule is like. Do placements occur in the semester, or during the holidays? Both? What are the hours like per week? And especially for speech path masters students, what does your weekly class schedule look like?

La Trobe Bendigo vs. Deakin Melbourne for Biomedical Science—Need Advice!

Hi everyone!

I’m an international student currently trying to decide between La Trobe University’s Bendigo campus and Deakin University in Melbourne for my a bachelor's in Biomedical Science. I’d love to get some advice, especially from people who’ve studied at either university or are familiar with both campuses.

Here’s my situation:

  1. La Trobe Bendigo
    • Total tuition fees: ~36,040 AUD for the first year and ~31,050 AUD for the second and third years after the early bird acceptance (5% off the first semester) and the academic merit (25% starting from the second semester to the duration of my course) scholarships.
    • Quiet, smaller-town environment.
    • Limited biomedical science facilities compared to Melbourne but still solid overall.
    • No option to transfer to La Trobe’s Melbourne (Bundoora) campus because my course isn’t offered there.
  2. Deakin Melbourne (Burwood):
    • Total tuition fees: ~44,000 AUD for all three years and this doesn't include any sorts of scholarships because I didn't receive any :/
    • Located in Melbourne—a vibrant city with better networking and internship opportunities in biomedical sciences.
    • Offers a better city experience, but it comes with higher living costs and potentially more distractions.

My Dilemma:
Financially, La Trobe is the more affordable option, but I’m worried about missing out on the experience, networking, and resources that Melbourne offers. On the other hand, Deakin’s costs are higher, and I’m not sure if the extra expenses are worth it from an international student perspective.

So, my questions for those who’ve been through this:

  • Is studying in Melbourne worth the extra costs and caveats?
  • How’s Deakin for Biomedical Science compared to La Trobe?
  • For anyone who’s lived in Bendigo, how is the experience there in terms of quality of life and student support?

Any insights, experiences, or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

P.S. I’d love an answer ASAP since I’m planning to make this decision by tomorrow by paying the deposit to one of these universities.

Club idea - Alternative music club

Hey everyone my name is Joey and I want to start a new club on campus for the lovers of alternative music, like think punk, new wave, goth, grunge, post punk etc just stuff that isn't in the mainstream because I don't think the music society does a good job of encompassing these types of genres. I think it would be cool for us peeps to get together on campus and just chill and listen to music and also have a jam amongst other things. I don't have enough friends to start the club as I've only done one semester and I need 6 people to start the club. Feel free to respond I would like some thoughts :) - btw below is the sisters of mercy they are my favourite goth band

Help Me Choose: LTU Bendigo or VU Melbourne for Biomedical Science?

Hi everyone,
I’m an international student currently deciding which university to attend, and I’ve narrowed my options down to La Trobe University and Victoria University. I’ve ruled out Deakin because the tuition fees are just too expensive, and I’m not considering Western Sydney University (WSU) since I’m more interested in moving to Melbourne than Sydney.

Since it’s down to LTU and VU, I thought I’d ask for your opinions on which uni I should choose.

Right now, I’m leaning more towards LTU because of its much higher ranking compared to VU (LTU is ranked in the 200-300s, while VU is in the 700-800s). I know rankings aren’t everything, but when the gap is this significant, I feel like it’s worth considering. I’ve also heard that LTU might be a better option for someone like me who is thinking of pursuing postgraduate medicine, thanks to its stronger reputation for biomedical science and research.

However, my offer for LTU is for the Bendigo campus, which is about a two-hour drive from Melbourne. I had hoped to study closer to the city, somewhere like the Bundoora campus, as it would have been much more convenient for me. This feels like a bit of drawback, unless I choose to transfer, which could solve the problem. However, I’ve heard that transferring can be a real nightmare, especially for an international student like myself. Therefore, I’d prefer to stay at one place and not transfer for now when considering which uni to attend. My Uni advisor has also advised me to avoid transferring uni (and I'm assuming she also meant campuses) to prevent getting the Department of Immigration involved and potentially affecting my visa in any negative way.

On the other hand, VU’s block model has me torn. Some people say it’s great for managing stress and focusing on one subject at a time, but others have criticized it. I’m not sure how I’d personally find it, but it’s definitely a unique teaching style.

A couple of questions I’m hoping you can help with:

  • Would it be significantly more expensive to live in Melbourne if I went with VU?
  • When it comes to part-time job opportunities, does being in the city help significantly compared to studying at Bendigo?
  • Am I really missing out on much by choosing LTU Bendigo and not living in the city center? How big of a difference does it make in terms of job opportunities, social life, and general student experience?
  • Do you think I should reconsider my options entirely and look at Deakin or WSU instead?

Let me know what you guys think, I’d really appreciate your thoughts and advice right now :)

preference order of La Trobe campuses? Bendigo, Mildura, Albury-Wodonga

I'm an international student thinking of applying at La Trobe. Before starting, I want to know what should be my preference order. Would love to hear from people who have lived or studied here. Thanks for your time. Edit: planning for Master of Nursing Practice. It's available in these 3 regional campuses

Internal Law Transfer

I was wondering if anyone knows how many spots La Trobe reserves for internal transfers? I’m hoping to transfer into law next year after completing my first semester at La Trobe. If I get a WAM of 84, is this a guaranteed spot? The minimum requirement for 1 semester (45cp) is 73. I worked so hard 🥲.

Receiving Financial Support *URGENT*

Hello,

Not looking for judgement, but I have a situation. Just accepted for a Bachelor of Biological Sciences, but cannot afford to move to Melbourne. Attempting to escape home due to DV, have little to no funds. I am 15. Applied for Centrelink a few months ago, but was rejected as I am still living with my parents. Seems like an endless cycle, really. Anyone have experience getting financial aid, from either LaTrobe, or elsewhere, that will allow me to leave as soon as possible. Thanks.

Got caught by myki checker

Hello guys , before jumping into any judgement, I need some genuine advice here , I'm today's years old when I came to know international students are not eligible for concession fare on myki . I mistakenly reloaded my digital myki with concession and I never travelled on a concession before. The authorized officer questioned my proof of concession, I showed my student id and he seems to be not satisfied with it and he wrote my address , student id , university and all. He said the only positive thing I did was touch on and I may get a warning but I'm not sure because the fine amount is $296 . Is there any legal services associated with LA trobe who may do a pro bono . If I want to go to court . My apologies I never intended to cheat the system , it was a genuine mistake. I previously had cards and I have no idea what they were since I didn't get any of these issues previously . Any kinds of advice must be much appreciated . P.s I'm broke

Bach of Speech Path

Hi Everyone! Potentially a silly question, but would anybody know how many places would be on offer for Bachelor of Speech Pathology? I’ve applied as a mature-aged student, as well as applied for Bach of Health Science majoring in Allied Health, which is what they recommended me for a pathway course, but I’m still keeping high hopes that I magically get accepted into Speech next offer round. I got an offer for another uni and their pathway course through the recent November rounds, but am not as keen on that one. I’m so stressed, being 23 and everything, if I have to do a pathway course it’ll be 5 years of study and I feel like I’ll be so damn old by the time I can graduate hahaha. Thanks in advance!!

I understand that you can apply for a graduate program (for research) at any time of the year but how long does the application process take? Do you know if you are accepted or not in few weeks?

Short Overseas Programs

Has anyone completed a short overseas program, is about to do one soon, or knows of someone who has through La Trobe University? I have received my acceptance letter from LTU. Would just like to know about your experience because I'm feeling a bit nervous knowing I'll be travelling alone to a country across the world- don't get me wrong though, I'm very excited! If you have any words of advice for this program please let me know as well. Thank you so much.

Master of social work (Melbourne)

Im considering doing a master of social work part time. Currently work part time in allied health for the last 10 years. Wondering if it’s possible to keep a job while doing the study? How do the placements work when studying part time? Do you end up with a below average placement due to most places wanting full time students? Currently considering Latrobe as it’s the closest to me. Have you found there to be many contact hours required on site? Just trying to see whether keeping a job part time is doable. Would be open to doing the placement full time and taking time off from work over that time. Thanks
