Tasmania News

Hey guys,

Just posting because I live in Tasmania and there is a lot of construction work going on out at Bridgewater with the new Bridgewater bridge that they have been working on and have put in new roads to get around the construction work.

More info,

Thanks,

JLN advisory board members need to be identified, the party looks like a tactic just to prop up the Libs from the very beginning. Great politics, but no integrity.

The Jacquie Lambie Network advisory board looks like the big story of the Tassie election.

I have heard (ed. a well informed rumour) that it is stacked with hard right ex-liberal-types. It is time to demand full transparency.

Has Jaqui managed to succeed where Clive Palmer failed, and prop up the Libs with some utter sh!t-f@ckery?

The deal signed doesn’t look like a sell-out, so much as a fait accompli.

Still needing one more vote to govern, this parliament may be shorter than the average JLN voters attention span. The Tassie public need to loudly demand answers.

The Mount Gell Circuit / Cheyne Range - Hiking in Tasmania

Recently, I spent 4 days hiking in one of the more remote parts of Tasmania, ticking off some mountains including Mount Hugel, the Cheyne Range, Mount Gell and The Hippogriff. Truly a fantastic part of TAS, although it was a very challenging walk.

I hope you enjoy the visual story of the experience.

Grad Job experience

Hello, I am writting this post as i’m a thinking about moving to Tas after I finish my degree in computer science, just wondering if anyone has done anything similar and I am wondering what the job market is like for tech grads in tas. I’ve heard the job market in tas is pretty rough but i’d be keen to hear a bit more about anyone’s personal experience in the tech field.

What happened to St Helens MTB park?

My husband and I are keen mountain bikers from North Queensland. We visit Tasmania most years to ride. Today we visited St Helen’s MTB park and it was a ghost town. Do they still operate daily shuttles? We read a sign from vertigo saying ‘they will pick up the pieces - call for shuttles.’

Places to visit in Tasmania

Me and my wife are visiting Tasmania in May. I've been to Tasmania once many years ago but mostly driving from Launceston to Hobart and back. This time we would like to explore Tasmania a bit. We are there for 5 days.

Asking suggestions for places we could visit. Looking for day trips and small hikes. Something like dove lake circuit or wineglass bay lookout, Willington mountain lookout, etc. We are marking places to visit in google map.

We would really appreciate suggestions for places to visit.

P.S. no extreme hikes or more than day worth of trip including few hours of drive.

Job situation in Tassie

I'm wanting to move into Tassie into around warrane but I'm 18 with a bit of experience in physical labour jobs I'm just wanting to know how would I go if I tried looking and how long it could be before i possibly even get into one

If possible something like apprenticeship would be more ideal so I can move from there but not sure what the likely chance of me even getting one is and is it a real struggle getting one at my age

Is small Claims Court worth it?

Last June I hired Tassie Trade Services and spent $5000 on new gutters around my house and my facia being painted. A month after install and having paid the bill I realised the gutter was holding water down 10m of my house.

I've spent nearly 9 months getting the run around with the tradie not always answering calls or texts and failing to turn up 3 times. He's even giving me personal sob stories as excuses for why he's not fixed it.

I've never had to deal with anything like this and can only think that small claims is the only way to get money back to pay someone else. What is people experience?

Tassie: how easy is it to access NDIS supports?

Hello!! We're currently living in rural Vic, but are thinking about a sea change to Tassie for a variety of reasons. We're tossing up between Burnie and Devonport... Our question is, what are people's experiences of finding supports in these areas? Is there anything locally? We mainly need physiotherapy & occupational therapy for my son's condition. As we come from a regional area we understand these services are in higher demand, but just wanted to compare before we make our decisions. Thanks in advance for your help :)

Spirit of Tasmania - The Trip

Hi Folks,

I've booked a trip this week on the Spirit of Tasmania for my Family and I and it will be our first trip across the strait. We're looking forward to it!

I've got a couple of questions about the trip, as I'm travelling with 4 kids (aged between 5 and 12).

Our trip over to Devonport will be an overnighter and I've booked a 4 bed cabin with 2 Recliners. Is it safe to assume we can move around the ship between the Cabin and Recliner area during the night? I'm guessing a lot of the amenities/entertainment areas are probably closed, but would be good to know if I can move around and tag team parenting duties in the cabin if I have to.

On the way back, we'll be day sailing, which I've booked 5 x Day tickets, and one recliner if someone wants to use it. Although travelling with kids, will there be enough to keep them occupied for ~10hrs? Is it worth getting a Cabin to give them a quiet space if they need it?

Any other tips for the voyage would be welcome!

EDIT - 11/4/2024

Thanks everyone who replied. I got some helpful tips!

My main takeaway is that getting a cabin for the day trip is a good idea. I've updated my booking to include that if we want somewhere to stash our bags or a seasick kid.

Sounds like the day trip isn't as adventurous as one might think. I'll definitely be loading up the iPads with some movies before we leave in case the kids get tired of what entertainment is on board.

Also sounds like the strait can get pretty rough. Will definitely pack some kwells!

Thanks all!

Seeking Advice: Pros, Cons, and Hidden Costs of Booking a Caravan for a Tasmania Trip

Hey fellow travelers,

I and a friend plan to have a holiday to Tasmania from April 23rd to 28th, and we're considering booking a caravan for our trip. We're excited about the flexibility and freedom it offers, but we want to make sure we're fully informed before making the commitment. We'd love to hear your insights, experiences, and any tips you have to offer.

Here are some specific questions we have:

Pros:

  • What are the main advantages of traveling with a caravan in Tasmania?
  • How does having a caravan enhance the overall experience compared to other forms of accommodation?

Cons:

  • Are there any drawbacks or challenges to consider when booking a caravan for a Tasmania trip?
  • What are some potential downsides that we might not have thought about?

Hidden Costs:

  • Aside from the obvious rental fees, what are some hidden costs associated with booking a caravan?
  • Are there any unexpected expenses that we should budget for in advance?

General Tips:

  • Any advice for first-time caravan travelers in Tasmania?
  • Are there specific routes, campgrounds, or attractions that you recommend for caravan trips in Tasmania?

We're eager to hear from those who have firsthand experience with caravan travel in Tasmania or similar destinations. Any insights or advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help!

The current state of Tasmania is extremely depressing

Sorry for what will probably be a long post but needing to vent and not sure where else to go.

I'm a young person who is born and raised in Tassie but I feel so hopeless right now. Tassie will always be my home, I love the state so much, but I think as soon as I'm done with uni I'll be another young person fleeing to the mainland. There's so little opportunity for young people to grow here, and the pay is abysmal and not enticing whatsoever. Our housing situation is laughable, I will never be able to afford my own property no matter how much I run myself into an early grave by slaving away at work. I can barely afford rent, and I'm living in an extremely cheap sharehouse. I've had to cut back half of my groceries and I can still barely afford to eat. Currently I'm $30 short for rent (due today) because I prioritised buying my meds and some fruit instead.

Some days I can't go anywhere because I can't afford to put fuel in my car, and the public transportation here is absolutely shit. Tasmania is the only state that doesn't have passenger rail services, and the buses are so unreliable and don't even come to my suburb that it's just not worth the hassle most days. I can't even begin to understand the crackheads who thought putting a stadium in the Hobart CBD, which has basically one way in and out, with crappy public transportation, was a good idea. Especially since traffic through the city on an average day is terrible. It once took me a whole hour to get from the beginning of Davey St to the southern outlet.

Not to mention, the government is most likely going to go through with the all-round terrible stadium idea, which will further bankrupt the state, instead of fixing the issues stated above or the state of our health care system. I have several issues with my health that I can't get tests and such for because I just can't afford it. My partner has been waiting SIX YEARS for a surgery that is needed for them to function normally, because it's classed as a "cosmetic surgery." We would go with private health if we could afford the $7-8K, but we can't so we need to wait for the public health to give us a surgery date and still pay a couple grand out of pocket. We still don't have a date for surgery, we're just praying they don't die before it can be done.

And after the results of the election, I've lost all faith in my fellow Tasmanians. I cannot believe the conservative fuckwits who've ruined the state for a decade have been voted back in. I feel that the cracks in our education are showing a lot now, with more people who lack critical thinking skills ending up supporting these shit ideals.

I love Tassie for its unique wilderness and animals, but the government is happily destroying it all to line their own and their mates pockets. I feel that no matter what I do or how hard I try, it won't have an impact on anything. My voice won't be heard or listened to. I want to stay and fix the state but I fear that it's not possible. At this point I've about given up and am ready to move away from my home for good.
