P plate test Morwell

Hey guys, I'm about to do my P plate test in Morwell vicroads and was wondering if anyone has some advice or information about the area or route they take as I'm very unfamiliar with the area. Do they take you on the freeway for the second stage? Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Why is Churchill so cheap? Would it be a bad place to move?

Currently living in Yarra Valley area approx 1.5hr east of Melbourne. Been looking at selling my house and moving to Traralgon area (could pretty much buy another house and be debt free at 34) When looking at houses in Churchill I've noticed they are considerably cheaper that similar houses in Traralgon.

Would Churchill be a bad area to buy? I've done some work around there before and didn't really think of it as a rough area from my experience. I know there's not much there, but is there a reason why it's so much cheaper than Traralgon besides the fact it's a bit out of town?

EDIT: Thought i will add. My work has a yard in Traralgon and have spent a fair bit of time doing LAHA work there so would probably be looking to transfer there.

Where I live now it is approx 35-40 minutes to drive to "town" where nearest kmart, bunnings, repco all those sort of shops are. The drive into a bigger town doesn't really worry me, and having a supermarket and in town is all I really need. I go to the city maybe once a year so absolutely no issues with that

Inverloch/Cape Paterson - What’s it like to live there full-time?

Hello Redditors,

Considering a solo move to Inverloch/Cape Paterson to start a new life chapter after several years working remotely overseas.

For those that live in those areas, what is full-time life like? Particularly interested in what the community vibe is like & how engaged/welcoming it is.

Seems pretty good from the outside looking in: Quiet regional areas, close to awesome beaches, mild climate all-year round, new sustainable housing communities.

My background:

  • Solo post separation, mid 40’s
  • Originally from East Gippsland & lived regionally most of life
  • F/T WFH so no work commute required
  • Prefer mild climate & used to cooler winters
  • Very active lifestyle: Gym, run, hike, Pilates, surf.
  • Keen to meet like-minded people & build a tribe
  • Intend to buy or build 3BDR house in either location.

Hit me with all the pros/cons & any hard-earned advice!

We want to retire but need to be mortgage free. We could do that by moving to Gippsland but am concerned about bushfires. How realistic is it to move there?

We have a house with a bit of a remaining mortgage and live near the QLD/NSW border. Parts of our town are classified Very High Bush Fire and where we live ,low for floods, low for fires. But I mean, it’s the same town. If the very high area caught fire it’s likely to spread through the whole town. Evacuation is via one road or beach, if that’s considered an evacuation point??. But on the positive side, there’s never been a bushfire here that anyone can remember or that I can find on Google.

We decided to research areas we could move to and outright own a house or apartment and have money left over and my husband just loves Lakes Entrance. I have been there many years ago and don’t remember much but know it has a lovely beach,

I have also been to Raymond Island years ago and loved it there.

During our research, I discovered these areas are very close to where the Black Friday fires were.

Am I overestimating the fire danger risk? Does Lakes Entrance or Raymond Island get evacuated a lot for fires? Obviously lots of people live there happily so would love opinions on how much of a drama queen I am being. Thank you.

Abandoned Gippsland

Hi, I've lived in Gippsland for 20 years now. I enjoy checking old disused and abandoned places. I have photos of quite a few places as well as some videos. I tried finding the rules of the Gippy SubReddit with no luck, so I'm hoping youtube links are alright & hopefully some of you get something from it.

I threw this one together last night based on some photos I have of the old Jaclock Camp near Mirboo North.

I'm keen to find out more about it's history if anyone can help.

Cheers

Doug.

The Prem is now a church and that makes my Dad sad

This place once hosted big name bands like Crowded House, Hoodoo Gurus, Skyhooks, Hunters & Collectors, Rose Tattoo, Little River Band, Black Sorrows, Men at Work, Canned Heat and even Tina Turner just to name a few.

Now it's one of those new age churches and that made my Dad hurt because he went to watch some of his favourite bands. He even met Mum there too.

It would be nice if someone else would take it over and bring back bands to the Dome instead of being a church or empty.

Trailer stolen Morwell

Mountain biking at "the Pines" behind the airport, parked along Scrubby Lane between 300 and 500PM on Friday the 27th.

Single axle, 8 X 5 galvinzed steel cage U-Haul trailer stollen.

Giant U-Haul logos on it and the logo pressed into the deck plating and wheel wells.

Added insurance covers nothing related to theft, U-Haul doesn't cover theft so we are now out several thousand for the value of the trailer. Happy Holidays :(

Walkerville South Beach

A colleague from work showed me a picture of when she was a baby sitting on what she thought was Walkerville South beach. The picture would have been from the mid-to-late 70’s at a guess. The picture had beach boxes in the background.

Does anyone know whether Walkerville South had beach boxes once upon a time? I can’t find any historic photos which suggest they did.

EPA uses new power to quiet a noisy pub

EPA uses new power to quiet a noisy pub | Environment Protection Authority Victoria

17 December 2024

A noisy pub at Traralgon and its company director have been convicted and fined $15,000 each as EPA Victoria takes action with new laws to protect the public and the environment.

They will also pay more than $12,000 in legal costs to EPA Victoria.

After complaints of excessive noise, Ryans Family Hotel Pty Ltd (trading as Hotel Traralgon and known as Ryan’s Hotel) was charged with breaching the General Environmental Duty (GED), under the Environment Protection Act 2017.

Modelled on Victoria’s successful workplace safety law, the GED is a first for Australia.  It makes it everyone’s legal responsibility to take reasonable steps to reduce the risk of harm to human health and the environment.

EPA told the court that the company, and its director George Zurcas, failed to ensure all reasonably practicable measures were taken to address the risk of harm from excessive noise arising from the operations at the premises.

The company was charged after months of public complaints. EPA officers gave advice on how to comply in December 2021, conducted repeated inspections, then resorted to issuing a Prohibition Notice and electronic surveillance.

The notice banned the pub from engaging in any activity which would cause the emission of unreasonable noise between 10pm and 7am, and required it to show proof that it had complied.

In May 2022, loud music from the pub was still affecting people outside the premises, and EPA officers installed monitoring equipment nearby that logged the noise levels.  Inspections after midnight on two Saturday nights confirmed the excessive noise was coming from the hotel.

EPA General Counsel Greg Elms says while the prosecution’s primary purpose is to protect residents of the area from unreasonable levels of noise, the case is a pointer to a responsibility for all Victorians.

“The General Environmental Duty (GED) puts harm prevention at the centre of Victoria’s environmental laws. By ensuring we are aware of the environmental risks from our activities we can then take reasonable steps to reduce those risks and prevent harm from happening in the first place,” Mr Elms said.

“This is a first for Australia; Victoria is the first state with a legally enforceable GED pointing to proactive responsibility that applies to everyone, and this case demonstrates that it does its job,” he said.

“Everyone operating a business should look at their operation’s potential for affecting the environment, ask themselves ‘what’s the harm?’ and take actions before that harm can happen.”

For more information on the GED, visit (External link)epa.vic.gov.au/GED

Members of the public can report unreasonable noise and other forms of pollution by calling EPA’s 24-hour hotline on 1300 372 842 or providing details online at (External link)epa.vic.gov.au/report-pollution/reporting-pollution

First timer

Howdy friends,

We’re coming in from interstate and spending Christmas and Boxing Day in Gippsland, more specifically, staying at Korumburra to venture the walks on Wilson’s Prom.

But wanted some insights on what’s good to eat and see other than Big drift and the various walks we’d be doing.

Would love to support some small businesses.

Child care options?

Hi everyone! How are you? I might end up working in LRH (Traralgon) next year but was wondering what are some good childcare options within 30 minutes’ drive of the hospital, since I’ve a 3 yo (turning 4 in March) and I will be moving by myself initially. I start work very early (~7 am) and usually finish after 5 pm so I’d need a centre with extended hours. Thank you so much!

Good Doctors - Bairnsdale

After just moving down from Melbourne it's going to be too inconvenient to keep seeing my current doctor who's amazing. I'd love to find a new one down here who is trusted and actually wants to help solve issues before just throwing pills at you (nothing wrong with them, I'd just rather someone actually do tests and procedures rather than just medicate me with something before doing any exploration)

So, what are some good doctors (and their clinics) in bairnsdale?

Thanks in advance!! :)

Carols by Candlelight

Is there anywhere that does non religious Xmas carols?

We went to the Moe carols because it was t in a church or associated with a church group, but if it wasn't for the fireworks at 9:30pm we would have left.

I'm guessing the Traralgon one is going to be similar.
