It's no secret that many who belong to the LGBTQ community pursue higher learning. This is a place for those who want to talk about or discuss anything within the domain of academia (those thinking about going to college or university, undergrads, grads, professionals, all are welcome)! Here you can discuss your majors or minors, ask advice on what fields you may want to pursue in a friendly LGBTQ environment, talk about programs and schools around the world, share your research interests, recruit for study participation, or just anything related to academia. This isn't just a place for those who study LGBTQ issues (i.e. Women, Gender and Sexuality studies) although you are all very welcome to contribute and encouraged to contribute just as well as you architects, engineers, biologists, chemists, lawyers, etc. Be respectful of others and as always, when debating, use credible sources in backing up your claims!

Partnering Discrimination and Men and Masculine People of Color

Hello,

I am Daniel Nguyễn (he/him, any pronouns), a Clinical-Community Psychology graduate student at the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign. I’m recruiting participants for an interview study, about queer men and masculine people’s experiences of partnering discrimination, as it is based on notions of undesirability and desirability, at the intersection of racial-ethnic, gender, and sexual identity and expression (IRB Approval Number: 23844). For this particular study, I’m looking for people who: 1) are 18 or older; 2) live in and are currently located in the U.S.; 3) identify as a person of color; 4) identify as a cisgender man, transgender man, or any non-binary or gender diverse identity with a male sex assigned at birth (not including woman or feminine identities); and 5) pursue or engage with men in sexual or romantic relationships.

Participation involves: 1) a 5-minute demographic survey, and 2) a 60-90 minute interview, conducted in English. To participate, follow the link to this survey: https://illinois.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_40fxZE9iDOyGk6O. This survey screens for eligibility and asks about demographic info. Interview participants are compensated with a $15 Amazon gift card.

As a statement about my own identities, I identify as a Vietnamese-American gay/queer mostly cisgender man. I am a U.S. born (second generation immigration status) first generation student. I am a student at the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, on land historically occupied by the Peoria, Myaamia, Očhéthi Šakówiŋ, Kaskaskia, and Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo) peoples. We operate within institutions that ignore and legitimize colonial dispossession and encroachment, and seek to briefly name this absence and express gratitude to the people whose profound contributions remain unrecognized.

If you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact me, at: danieln8@illinois.edu.

Thank you so much!

[Research Study] LGBTQ+ College Student Safety Study

Are you an openly LGBTQ+ college student in the southeastern US? Are you in your third year or beyond (including graduate and professional studies)? If so, I am offering the opportunity to participate in a study on LGBTQ+ student safety perceptions in a university setting. LGBTQ+ persons, referred to in newer academic literature as Gender and Sexual Minority (GSM) persons, have a unique perspective in the world. This is an opportunity to share your take on the college experience as YOU see it! This should not take more than 6 hours over about a 3-week period, including online interviews and digital image submissions. As an incentive, participants are eligible for a random drawing of one of two $50 gift cards, delivered at the conclusion of the study. Through this study, your perspectives and experiences can help university leaders better understand and address the needs of the GSM student community.

To be considered for participation, please contact me at Daniel.S.Tanner@live.mercer.edu. Please share with anyone you feel would be qualified and willing to participate. Thank you!
