Transphobia Healing Project! Guided online writing exercises from UMass Boston, $20 compensation or funded community donation (transgender, nonbinary, gender diverse folks welcome!)

Apologies for cross-posting. Please see bottom of post for added links that may help to demonstrate this project's credibility!

TL;DR: Participate in an online guided writing study to advance free and evidence-based therapeutic tools for trans communities & earn $20 for yourself or a trans/nb NGO.

Hi there! My name is Lindsey White (they/them) and I am a nonbinary therapist, long time reddit lurker, and 6th year PhD student in Counseling Psychology at UMass Boston. With my colleague Dr. Heidi Levitt we have developed the Transphobia Healing Project! Our team targets translating evidence-based therapy tactics into at-home exercises in order to reach low-resourced communities, or folks who don’t readily have access to affirming therapists.

We are seeking participants to engage in three 15-minute-long online expressive writing exercises that contain prompts to help guide them as they reflect on a distressing experience related to their gender. Pre and post surveys are used to measure changes in mental health, and a follow-up survey to see if changes sustain after a month.

Financial Compensation: We are committed to providing direct financial support to trans/nb communities through our research. Participants have 2 payment options: 1) Choose an org that serves trans communities and WE will make a $20 to that org on your behalf (see list of orgs below), or 2) Receive a $20 Amazon gift card via email.

Here's a snapshot of how the THP will work:

  1. 2-minute screening call – verify you meet study criteria & we can answer any of your questions (Criteria: over 18, live in US, gender identity, not currently in crisis)
  2. Pre-study survey
  3. Writing exercise 1
  4. Writing exercise 2
  5. Writing exercise 3 + post-study survey
  6. 1-month follow-up survey + $20 pay-out in your preferred method

*Click the link here to get started on the project or to learn more about THP*

A note to our trans & nonbinary community members:

In my experience working with LGBTQIA+ folks in research, I know that many of our community members are understandably on guard against malicious people who harm us and our loved ones This is especially strong in our trans, nonbinary, and gender diverse communities (and, of course, in online spaces). To folks who feel concerned about a post like this, I wanted to say thank you for looking out and wanting to protect our communities. To help put folks at ease, I wanted to provide a few more links that may help to demonstrate a credible online professional presence, and a history of engagement in research in service of LGBTQIA+ communities.

  1. This is a study that Dr. Levitt, myself and colleagues have published on challenges some LGBTQIA+ folks have encountered while trying to become parents. It was cited in an amicus brief submitted to the U.S. Supreme Court to defend foster care non-discrimination.
  2. This is THP's "sister study" from our research team, which was developed for people with minority sexual identities.
  3. You can see some of our faces in our webpage bios.
  4. Finally, if you are more comfortable reaching out to an official "umb.edu" email address, you are welcome to email myself (Lindsey.White001@umb.edu), Dr. Levitt (Heidi.Levit@umb.edu), or the UMass Boston IRB (irb@umb.edu) directly with any questions or concerns.

Confidentiality, Data, & Ethics: The questionnaires you complete and the writing exercises you complete are the data that will be collected for analysis in this study. This data will help us to learn how these exercises function and how helpful they are for experiences of transphobia. Any confidential information you share will be kept confidential within the research team. That is, the information gathered for this project will not be published, shared, or presented in a way that would allow anyone else to identify you. The data collected in this study will be kept in confidence within the limits allowed by law. Psychologists have an obligation to report active threats of harming oneself or others (so please do not participate if you are actively in crisis, but instead we encourage you to call Trans Lifeline 877-565-8860) . No identifying information (e.g., names, addresses) will be recorded on your writing exercises or surveys and if you include identifying information in your writing exercises it will be deleted from our records. Your email address will be known only by the lead investigator of this project and graduate students trained in research ethics and confidentiality who are helping to schedule screening and send email reminders. All identifying records of your identification (e.g., email address) will be destroyed within one year of your completing your participation in this project.

Which binder should I get?

To preface, I’m a 17 year old queer and really insecure about my breasts. I’m a 36DD and looking for something that would make my breasts smaller but not too compressing as I’m really sensitive to clothing that squeezes too tight. I figured you guys would have some suggestions :) anything is appreciated!!

Study for trans and gender diverse people in NYC with recent stressful life experiences: Earn up to $360

We are interested in understanding how stressful life events impact transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people. If you identify as TGD and have recently experienced a very stressful event and are living in NYC, you might be eligible to participate in this research study.

The purpose of this research is to promote trauma recovery for trans and gender diverse people by better understanding how discrimination blocks pathways to healing. We're collecting saliva samples to examine the body's response to stress and discrimination by measuring levels of cortisol. This will help us advocate for better treatment for and show the resiliency of trans and gender diverse people who face daily stress and discrimination

Participation in this study involves the completion of 4 interview appointments scheduled over 12 months. During each appointment, you will be asked to participate in a clinical interview, provide salivary samples, and complete several questionnaires. For 14 days following these appointments, you will receive a link each day prompting you to complete a brief questionnaire. Eligible participants may earn up to $360 for study activities.

If you are interested in participating, please complete this online screening survey: https://tinyurl.com/y4pac7mw

So am I the only one getting angry at this?

This group could have so much value but it's become a place to post ads for research studies.... I dont mind the occasional one but it makes me feel objectified and used. Wondering if others feel the same way. Let's have a discussion about this.

This is meant to be a space for queer trans guys to talk safely amongst themselves. Knowing that people are trying to get information for research purposes through this forum makes me not want to post at all.

Looking for fellow trans brothers to help with my research! (Risk Factors and Well-Being Among Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Young Adults | US 18+)

Hi y'all! I'm Stan, a trans guy and graduate student in Psychology from the Baruch College Sexual and Gender Minority Health Lab. I'm recruiting for a research study for my thesis on gender experiences, risk factors (e.g., internalized transphobia, intimate partner violence), and protective factors (e.g., social support, community connectedness) of the well-being of transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) young adults. Eligible participants will be asked to complete an anonymous online survey (~15-20 mins).

We welcome folks who identify as/with any trans+ and gender diverse identities (e.g., trans man, trans woman, nonbinary, gender nonconforming, genderqueer, genderfluid, bigender, two-spirit, agender, etc.) to participate in our study. If you are 18 or older and are currently in the US, click HERE to access the survey. [Academic] LGBTQ+ Research Study (US 18+)

We are currently recruiting participants (18+) for a study examining intersectionality in relation to health behaviors. Intersectionality helps us understand how one’s various identities (e.g., race/ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status) impacts health outcomes.

A key piece of this study investigates intersectionality in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ+) adults.

Participation is relatively low burden, including a one-time online survey that will take about 30-40 minutes, and responses to the survey are completely anonymous. Each person who completes the survey will be entered into a raffle to receive a 20 dollar gift card from Amazon. There will be fifteen (15) gift cards that will be raffled off for this study.

[Academic] Transgender, genderqueer, and gender non-conforming perspectives on genetic research seeking genetic variants associated with transgender identities (18+; gift cards available).

“A qualitative study of transgender, genderqueer, and gender non-conforming (TGNC) individuals about genetic research seeking genetic variants associated with transgender identities”

Hello /r/QueerTransmen! I am an LGBTQ master's student in genetic counseling at Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions, conducting an IRB-approved research study as part of my graduate degree. The Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions invites you to participate in a research project titled “A qualitative study of transgender, genderqueer, and gender non-conforming (TGNC) individuals about genetic research seeking genetic variants associated with transgender identities” (2020P003562). The purpose of this study is to assess and understand the attitudes, opinions, and beliefs of the TGNC community about genetic testing and research seeking a genetic explanation for transgender identities.

Participation consists of filling out a survey of basic demographic questions, including information about your level of education and general level of familiarity with genetics. This survey should take about 10-15 minutes.

The second part of the interview will consist of a 45-60 minute qualitative interview through a secure Microsoft Teams call. Participants who are selected for an interview will be given $20 in the form of an Amazon or Target gift card as a result of completing this study.

We hope that this study will help gather recommendations and perspectives from the TGNC community about whether this type of genetic research should be done, and if so, how best to involve community members and include community feedback into the research design process.

Interested in learning more or participating in this study? Please sign up here: https://redcap.partners.org/redcap/surveys/?s=D9C99MNLKP

This study is approved by the Mass General Brigham Institutional Review Board under the protocol number 2020P003562.

Participate in Research Interview

Hello!

I’m recruiting participants for a study about people’s understanding of their own gender + sexuality, and their experiences with the ideas others hold about their group. This two-part research study is called Community Interviews (STU00213154), and includes a one-hour long video-recorded research interview with me as well as a brief online follow up survey. This data is being collected for research purposes and your information will be treated as confidential. Participants will be compensated $25 for their time, via a digital gift card of their choice.

I am recruiting (1) people who identify as transgender or otherwise gender-nonconforming (for example: transgender people, non-binary people, agender people, any identification or experience within the trans* umbrella) and (2) people whose sexuality is neither heterosexual nor homosexual (for example: bisexual, pansexual, asexual, queer, etc). Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 40, living in the US, and able to complete both parts of the study (interview & survey).

This study is designed to directly incorporate the voices + experiences of members of the BTQ+ community into the development of social theory. I’m doing this work as a psychology graduate student at Northwestern University, under the supervision of my advisor, Dr. Doug Medin.

If you’re interested in participating, email me at natalieg@u.northwestern.edu for more information. Also feel free to email me with questions, concerns, or marginalia!

Best Wishes,

Natalie Gallagher

Trans-Inclusive Sex Ed Sub

Hi everyone! We (the folks at long running sex ed site Scarleteen) have started a sub. Like all of our content, it's queer owned and operated, and trans inclusive. It's a space where folks can ask questions about sex and relationships and get answers from trained sex educators. Our target community is teens and young adults, but people of all ages are welcome to come and read/learn something new. If that sounds like your kind of thing, we'd love to see you there!

I don’t know how to feel

I had some hard time coming into terms with the possibility of my liking men. So I joined Grindr and tinder to see if I could meet someone. And I did. I was so excited to finally figure this out and I slept with him. And now I am pretty sure he unmatched me on tinder. Now I feel just dirty and nasty. Mostly invalidated. I want to try again this time take my time but I can’t seem to get over the rejection.

IDK Where I Fit

Hey,

I am Gray. Like many of you, I turned to reddit because there is no one really to turn to. I have a great friend but they would not understand what I am navigating through as a transman. When I started taking testosterone I was absolutely sure I was a straight guy but as I started to get comfortable with myself I started to realize that I am not as straight as I thought I was. But again I don’t know where to even begin to express, explore, or understand what I am currently going through. Just need really want to talk.
