Registering old car after 60 days

Has anyone had experience getting a license and registering a car in Maryland after the 60 deadline? My car is over seven years old, but I’m having a very hard time understanding what kind of a penalty I would face (I won’t be able to register within 60 days since I need to be out of the country). The MVA website says: “On vehicles seven years old and older, the tax is based on the greater of the purchase price or the minimum book value of $640.“ Does that mean that if I register a car older than 7 years, I’ll be assessed the full 6% on whichever is higher between the BB value of my car or $640? I thought I heard the most the fine would be is $38.40, which is based on the $640. Thanks for any tips and sorry if I missed this is another thread - I’ve been pulling y hair out trying to figure out what this means.

Best place to hike to see autumn trees around Annapolis?

Preferably near Anne Arundel county.

When I drive around here I just want to swerve directly into the beautiful trees.

I was asked for my driver's license to early vote. Is that normal??

I voted early and the lady at the polling place asked me for my ID as well as my name, address and signature. It wasn't until today that I really thought about it. I don't think she was supposed to ask for my ID if I'm already registered and in the system. I'm sure most poll workers are just doing their best but something about it felt wrong. What if I didn’t have it and was turned away? Should this be reported or is the process for early voting different than for election day?

Looking to move to Harford County area from Phoenix, AZ

My girlfriend and I are going to be moving from Phoenix, AZ to the Harford County area in about 18 months. We both have our bachelors, mine is in IT while hers is in Criminal Justice and she currently works in Victim Services. Some of the main factors we are considering are cost of living, crime rates, weather (like natural disasters or major storms), and location/traffic. We would like to live in one of the small towns in Harford County but cannot decide where would be ideal. Since I’m in IT, most of my work will be remote or based near APG so I am more concerned with where the most opportunities will be for her. As for a house, we are looking to buy within the next 3 years in a rural area that has access to everyday amenities within 20-30 min. We would greatly appreciate any feedback or thinking points we may have missed.

Advice for a Young Couple

My wife (29) and I (32) moved from the Philippines to Baltimore last year, and we’re loving it here! We’ve decided to settle down, build a life, and eventually start a family. One of our goals is to buy a house, ideally in a safe area outside of downtown, with a budget between $200k and $400k (I know, don't we all lol). We’ll likely need a second car as well, so we both have reliable transportation.

Right now, we’re renting downtown, which allows us to walk to work at the University of Maryland Medical Center. My wife is a nurse, and I’m a secretary, although I’m studying to become a nurse myself, aiming to complete my associate's degree by 2026 or 2027.

I’m also expecting an inheritance from my late father’s estate in the Philippines, which could help with a home down payment, a new car, or even pay off whatever amount my student loans are right now.

We’re trying to figure out our priorities, any advice on what steps to take first would be really helpful!

Private school for non-athletes

This may be a little niche- but what private high school would you recommend for a kid who isn't super into athletics? Where a kid can be a dork and thrive and have like minded friends. I feel like most schools are just the opposite- let's take popular athletic kids and let them be more elite and athletic and popular. Thanks for the suggestions!

Has anyone had problems with the Board of Elections this year?

I lived in Baltimore for 15 years and never had any issues with my voter registration or polling. I moved to the county and the Board of Elections has really been a huge pain. Their website has a link to request a mail in ballot, which I requested. Nothing arrived so I called and they said I hadn't requested one. So I have them walk me through it (I was quite frustrated) and they walked me through the exact same process I had gone through to request the mail in!! It blew my mind. And the representatives were of no use at all.

Anyone else having problems with ballots, polling places, etc. this year?

Why does Maryland have so few high end neighborhoods like other states do?

You see tons of large modern homes being built in other states in nice neighborhoods - Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, etc, but there seems to be exceptionally little of this in Maryland. I'm talking about 7500+ sq foot custom homes on multiple acres or more. Why is this? People here have money, I'd be surprised if they wouldn't sell.

Libraries open late? (Or work areas)

Hey guys, I work 90% at home and would like a change of environment. My local library is only open until 5pm and has a lot of kids in a small space so it's not the most productive environment. Are there any libraries open later?

I noticed UMD is open until 10pm for non students, but it's a bit farther then I'd like. I'd like to find a good suggestion that's closer to Baltimore/Columbia/Frederick (just not the DMV really). I went to the Barnes and Noble in the Columbia mall and found it has very little seating. Suggestions?

Why is Traffic So Bad on I-95 Between Laurel and Patapsco Lately?

I'm curious if anyone else has noticed the insane traffic buildup on I-95 between Laurel and Patapsco, especially between 3 and 6 p.m. It’s getting worse daily, and the congestion is particularly brutal near the intersections with MD-100, MD-175, and MD-32. It wasn’t nearly as bad a few months ago, but recently, it's like every day is a rush-hour nightmare.

I’m wondering if there are new construction projects or lane closures, or if anyone has insight on what might be causing this sudden increase. Is there a detour from another major route or just a shift in commuting patterns? If anyone has more info or tips on how to avoid this stretch, I’d appreciate it!

Thanks!

Henry G Ferguson Elementary School Acokeek MD, 1990)

Hello, this is kind of a lost memory of mine. I went to Henry G Ferguson Elementary School in 1990/1991. I had Mrs Rogan as a teacher in Kindergarten and then Mrs Pickett in first grade. Main memories I have is that Mrs Rogans class-outside of the window was a scenic view of a huge hill with houses on it. I moved before 2nd grade and can’t remember the names of any of my classmates. My parents were never in touch with anyone from the school after that as we moved to a new town and I only have scattered and vague memories. The school was eventually torn down and built up as a new one from what I’ve read. I was wondering if anyone here went there or if you have any memories from it? This is just a lost memory that kind of drives me crazy sometimes. It is almost otherworldly in a Deja vu sense because I remember it but have no way of ever seeing it again.

Pen / pencil in mail in ballot?

Do you have to use a specific kind of pen or pencil for the mail-in ballot? Like black pen only, pencil #2 only, etc.

I didn't see any specifics on the instructions and seeing conflicting and out-dated info online .

Edit. Found it online

If you received your ballot by mail or fax, you need a black pen to vote

Almost a million Marylanders turn out for early voting, up from last two presidential elections

Early voting came to an end Thursday night after a busy week where nearly a million Marylanders turned out to cast their ballots.

Around 23 percent of eligible voters in Maryland have already voted in the lead-up to Election Day, a Capital News Service analysis of unofficial early voting data from the State Board of Elections found.

Maryland saw a 14 percent increase in early voter turnout this year compared to 2016, according to the CNS analysis.
