Parked in the recently updated parking garage on Gorman St. and stayed slightly longer than what was paid via the app. Just got a $50 citation for what is around a hour of unpaid parking 😤. I could stomach $15, or even $25, but $50? Ridiculous! I see that the citation is to be remitted to a service company in New Orleans, so I assume this is just a cash grab by the city and the company they’ve contracted with. Does anyone know if there is an appeal process for this stupendous charge?
Our family is relocating from Houston to Annapolis this year. I've realized that housing is much different from Texas. We found a new neighborhood near Quiet Waters Park. The homes are the closest I can find in terms of layout and finishes to what we have now, but the community doesn't have a marina, clubhouse, or water access. It does back up to Quiet Waters, though. In Houston, we don't have all the natural beauty Annapolis has, so this would be a gem of a find in Texas, but it seems like being in a water-privileged community is a top priority here. The problem is that most of the homes in these communities are dated and have split-level layouts that I am no fan of. Is water privilege a top priority? I'm just concerned about resale. Budget is $1.1 million or less.
What restaurants offer 1/2 off a bottle of wine on Thursdays?
Hello! I am looking for a new hair stylist who can also do sew in extension re-installations. Please let me know if you have recommendations, thank you! ☺️
I have a rental property in central AA county that needs to be cleaned before the new tenant moves in. House will be empty but lived in. Existing tenant is supposed to leave it broom clean and most likely will. Any recommendations for a good cleaning service?
My family and I are in Annapolis for a week as part of a 4-month scouting trip from Maine to NC. Our goals are to find a nice town/city to move to with the following qualities:
After a few days exploring Annapolis and reading a ton of reddit threads (this thread was especially timely), my disorganized thoughts are as follows:
Do these observations seem right to everyone? For context, we've recently scouted Portland ME, Boston suburbs (Newton, Wellesley, Concorde), Hudson Valley, and will be going to Raleigh & Asheville NC next.
I’ve been able to find the annapolis triathlon club website but it doesn’t look like much recent activity do anybody know if the club is still a thing?
My wife and I hit 50 and are in the market for a new Primary Care/Family Practice doctor that we can stay with for a long time. Anyone have recommendations for the Annapolis or Edgewater areas? Thank you.
Does anyone know of a place in/around Annapolis where you can go to get your car seat checked to make sure it’s installed correctly? I heard that possibly the fire dept does it but haven’t been able to confirm. Nervous first time parent over here :)
Are the lines long? Would it behoove us to get there early?
Hi Everyone,
I’m looking for recommendations on where to take my kids truck or treating for Halloween.
Looking to make a recipe that calls for goat. Does anyone know what stores around Annapolis sell goat meat?
Is that true Atlas Group is trying to take over Middleton’s and 1747 to update and turnover into an upscale trendy spot?
Going to visit my mom in January (for her 96th birthday!!!) and the cheapest rental cars are EVs, it seems. Fun to drive but gotta figure the charging situation out!
Thanks!
What’s going on? Where is it coming from? Started at about 5:30pm Sat Oct 26.
Just went to one of my favorite cupcake places in the area.... Smallcakes... and saw a sign that they are moving to Severna Park. Looks like they will be replaced by a liqueur store. Don't know when the move is actually going to take place but will be sad to see them go.
Hey everyone! My wife is an Alumni. We have been watching football this season and there appears to be an entire athletic team on the sidelines (they have the grey sweats on in the Notre Dame game). Is this the rugby team or something?
Anne Arundel County Schools is one of the latest stories about an institution getting media attention for not having an AI Policy and for using unreliable AI Detection.
https://youtu.be/KddlTs2CLpM?feature=shared
There is a reason why AI Detectors have statements in their terms of service that state that their detectors should not be used to punish students. They realize the false positives are too high and the harm it causes is too great. GPTZERO is making huge moves to get out of the AI detection game and into a product that has screen recording and track changes and tech geared toward proving the work is human by process proofs.
What would you do if your child was falsely accused of AI use? I have attached links at the bottom that you can forward to your district or institution to share with them that AI Detectors and assumptions is not the best path forward.
Ben is the co-founder and CEO of Doowii, an AI data platform developed for educators. He asks the question of what is the acceptable rate of false accusations? https://literalhumans.com/podcast/data-educators-ai-ben-dodson/
AI DETECTORS ARE NOT RELIABLE: Numerous studies have shown that AI Detectors are highly inaccurate. One of the studies from University of Maryland, "demonstrated empirically that detectors for AI-generated text are not reliable in practical scenarios and that they perform only marginally better than a random classifier."
AI DETECTORS ARE BIASED: Studies have shown that neurodivergent and those whose second language is English and African American students have very high rates of false accusations at the hands of a machine. A few days ago a story came out about a neurodivergent student being falsely accused: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2024-10-18/do-ai-detectors-work-students-face-false-cheating-accusations?utm_campaign=news&utm_medium=bd&utm_source=applenews
AI DETECTORS AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AND PRIVACY: AI detectors have terms of use that include the following: When using their product you must be the owner of the work or have permission of the owner to submit. Many detectors state flat out that once works are submitted that they acquire the ownership of that document without any compensation to the owner. The detectors can use these works to train their systems and they financially benefit. As FOX Baltimore pointed out, FERPA rights may be violated when teachers/instructors use these products without consent. Would the submission without consent also violate intellectual property rights?
DO THE USE OF AI DETECTORS VIOLATE DUE PROCESS? In Texas, a teachers union won their case against a school district because the district was using black box technology/algorithms (AI Detectors are black box tech) to evaluate them. The judge stated the district can't have a policy that includes the use of black box technology because it violated due process rights.
NO POLICIES ON AI, or AI DETECTION USE: While many institutions across the country have caught on and have barred the use of AI detectors because they were seeing too many false allegations and they recognized that not only does it open them up to lawsuits, but it is also unethical to allow a machine to make the judgement call on high stakes decisions. If a district or institution does not have an AI policy or if the do not have an AI detector policy that includes that detector policy on the syllabus; that brings ethical and legal questions into the forefront. Is it ethical to use AI Detectors and not tell students that they are being used and they student only finds out when they are accused? Or is it entrapment?
TEACHER CAN NOT ACCURATELY DETECT AI TEXT Numerous studies reveal that even the most seasoned teachers can't not identify the difference between AI and student generated texts with high accuracy. For example the study, " Do teacher spot AI? Evaluating the detectability of AI-generated texts among student essays" revealed that "Experienced teachers only accurately identified 37.8% of AI texts" They stated that, even when they felt confident they often times missed the mark and their judgements were incorrect.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY IS IMPORTANT, BUT ARE USING TOOLS SO FLAWED AN ACT OF INTEGRITY? AI detectors have been scientifically proven to be unreliable, AI detectors are biased against neurodivergent and second language learners, Teachers and AI detectors can't accurately decipher between AI and student work and false accusation cause irreversible harm to students. So, why are some institutions and districts still allowing their staff to use these black box algorithms? This is a tough time in academia wherein teachers are in just as tough as a spot as the students.
WHAT ABOUT THOSE FALSE ACCUSATIONS? Students can do very little to defend themselves against a machine and an educator who is confident they can tell the difference between AI and students work. Imagine your child is falsely accused of AI use? What would you do? The choices are slim; go to the media, spend thousands of dollars to assist your child in their defense, you may sue the institution or district for defamation with punitive damages or perhaps for discrimination, or tortious interference of future economic gain seek $5,000,000 if your child is part of the population which detectors are biased against, you may feel helpless and watch your child's academic career be destroyed all because of new technologies came forth before academia was prepared for it. The most significant impacts of being falsely accused is the mental health toll it takes on the students and the destruction of trust between students and their teachers.
Links to studies and texts to share:
“Our AI writing detection model may not always be accurate (it may misidentify both human and AI-generated text) so it should not be used as the sole basis for adverse actions against a student. It takes further scrutiny and human judgment in conjunction with an organization's application of its specific academic policies to determine whether any academic misconduct has occurred.”
“The use of AI text detection tools could inadvertently penalize students for adhering to standard, formal writing styles, which AI models are trained on and could be mistaken for AI-generated content. This indicates a need for a more nuanced understanding and use of such tools in academic settings to ensure fair evaluations.”
A major concern with current AI detectors is their tendency to falsely accuse humans of using AI. These false positives regularly flag content written legitimately by people as AI-generated. With no recourse to overturn incorrect judgments, this results in unfair punishment for the falsely accused. With no concrete proof, either way, you, especially students, have no options when falsely accused of AI use. Presuming guilt from error-prone detectors enables unsubstantiated allegations and unjust penalties.

Hi all - I’m looking for a great fly fishing vest and other gear for a family member. Does anyone know of any local spots that sell solid gear? Willing to drive up to 30 to 45 minutes away, if needed.
Hi Folks, I'm curious if there are any other archers here that can recommend a shop to tune/service both compound and recurve.
I'm also curious if there are any recs for archery clubs. I've heard of AA archers but are there any groups in the area that would welcome a newer member?
Thanks in advance!
Anyone know anything about what happened at the mall just now?
I heard ppl inside were coughing and had trouble breathing like someone set off tear gas or something.
Tons of fire and police.
Anyone a member at LifeTime Fitness? How's the gym? How's the classes (mostly interested in GTX and Alpha)? I'm currently looking to join a new gym and interested in LifeTime Fitness due to their classes. I enjoyed F45 and Orangetheory, but I would also like access to a gym during non class days.
I’ve been applying to many retail positions in and around the Annapolis area. I’m not just stuck on retail though, I’m open to everything. I do not have certifications for anything. I’m looking for something that pays atleast $20 an hour and a plus would be if it could turn into a career with growth, but that’s not my main concern at the moment. Please post anything you can think of in and around the Annapolis area that doesn’t have a terribly long hiring process, and if you have personal experience with the company I’d love to hear it. Thank you!
I'm going to be in Annapolis tomorrow, Friday, and I would like to know local opinions about the best place to eat lunch. I will drive anywhere in Annapolis. Thank you!
