Has anyone else noticed this in Columbia Target?

The last couple times I’ve been to the target at Dobbin, there’s been a super rancid odor over where the milk aisle ends and meets the cheese cooler, right by the body wash etc. I figured it was spoiled milk, and maybe it is, which just means they leave it for weeks without checking?

Disc Golf at Rockburn Park or HoCo in general

Hi y'all! Trying to figure out if the Disc Golf course at Rockburn park does rentals on-site or if I have to get some at a local sports store or something. Though would prefer a rental on-site course, so if anyone has any recommendations for disc golf places within Howard County that does rentals on-site, would greatly appreciate that.

Leftists. We need to organize…

But not sure what the scene is like here. There’s apparently a growing maga population here. So let’s grow ours. How do we spread progressive ideas to the maga people and neoliberals of the area? What can we do to get together to build community in the rise of fascism?

Howard County Public Schools Special Education

Hi! I currently live in Columbia but work in Baltimore County Public schools. I absolutely love my school but the commute is getting to be too much.

I am a special educator and am looking for insight into Howard County Public Schools and their special education programs. Any current/former teachers, families with special ed students in the county, or others who want to share their thoughts/ experiences?

Thanks!

In your 20s & 30s and looking to make friends, socialize, and connect with others in your same age range? Join Columbia Social for our November happy hour!

Who is Columbia Social? We are a group of 20s & 30 year olds who are all in the same boat, living in and around the Columbia area and looking to make friends. We are not a singles dating group, we are not a career networking group, we are a group of people just looking to make friends & socialize. Come with your spouse, come by yourself, come with your friends, come with a job, or come funemployed! For November we are hosting a happy hour at Reckless Shepherd on Thursday November 21 starting at 5PM. RSVPs for events are always requested but not required. Meetup

We also have two events scheduled for December already(These will be re-posted on Reddit in early December)

Books & Brews: Remember the thrill of school book fairs? We’re bringing it back—with a grown-up twist! On December 5, join us at Cushwa Rad Pies & Taproom to sip your favorite drink, browse new holiday releases, get personalized book recommendations, and explore exclusive merch. It’s everything we loved as kids, now with a dash of adult fun! As always, no need to browse or drink. Come as you are and be respectful of others. Details and RSVP

Columbia After Darkm NYE Party: Looking to ring in the new year with other 20s/30s people? Then join your friends at Columbia Social for a New Years Eve party at GameOn! This event will be a great way to hang out with others in the same age range, socialize, and ring in the new year. There will be open-bar packages available to purchase, but not required at all. Details of this to come shortly. Details and RSVP

FAQs:

  • I am coming by myself, is that okay? Absolutely! We will introduce ourselves to everyone that comes in and connect you with other people

  • Can I bring someone? Totally welcome. Please bring your friends, spouses, partners, or anyone else you know that is looking to make friends

  • I have never been to one, is everyone already cliqued off? Not at all! Our events have a lot of first timers every time and the repeat attendees are always looking to meet new people too

  • I don't drink, is that okay? Yes! You will not be alone in not drinking. There are others who come just for the food or the socialization

  • I do not live in Columbia, am I allowed to come? Yes! We have plenty of people that show up from the central Maryland area

  • I am 41/22/etc, can I still come? The targeted demographic is 20s and 30s, but we do not turn people away at the door if they are over 39. Come on out if you are over 21 and anywhere in your 30s! seriously, we are an incredibly welcoming group. I will introduce myself to you when you show up and we will make you feel welcome. Nearly every event has 20-30 new people showing up at it. You won't be the only new person

If you have any feedback, concerns, thoughts, or suggestions please let me know! We have taken feedback from all the events to make this more accessible, more welcoming, and with more space so people can spread out. This is a community run event so we want to take community input.

Lastly - thank you to all who show up for the first time and for those who return! Its been amazing seeing the community growing from this and the friendships being made.

Looking for Groups/People with Similar Interests

Hi everyone,

I’m a 22-year-old guy who’s really into staying active and exploring different interests. I enjoy sports like basketball, running, and pickleball, and I’m always up for other active games or activities. I’m also into economics, finance, and reading — I love learning and having meaningful discussions.

I also enjoy trying out new food places and discovering cool spots to eat.

I’m looking to connect with people in the area who share similar interests. Ideally, individuals around my age who are also looking to build healthy relationships, grow as individuals, and just enjoy life with good company.

If you’re into any of these things or know of groups I could join, feel free to reach out!

Thanks.

Hoops and Swims

Hey … if winter eventually gets here, looking for a place with indoor, open basketball courts and swimming lanes. Seem to be hard to find.

I’ve tried Roger Carter - court is usually busy with an activity, pool does have free lanes sometimes. I’ve been put off by CA and the Y in the past. Are there any other options? For those that have done both the Y and CA, preferences? How crowded are the indoor pools and courts?

Anyone want to socialize dogs?

Hey columbia,

I have 2 cockapoos which I am struggling to train. They are very sweet and super affectionate, but they get too excited when they see someone new.

Does anybody else have dogs that could benefit from socialization and want to meet?

Juniper and Marlow residents - has anyone successfully negotiated the lease?

Just received an offer from the leasing office - the best priced rent is still 10% higher than what I pay now!

Greystar is the largest apartment manager in the country, so I imagine they’ve optimized their pricing and might not budge, but just wanted to hear from other folks in case it’s possible.

Does anyone know the guy that's always walking the paths around Patuxent Trail?

I live near Lake Elkhorn and see him all the time in the Patuxent Trail area. He is usually shirtless (in the summer), middle aged, Asian, very toned body. He's not just walking, he's exercise-walking.

Anyway, I'm usually running and I've never stopped to say hi or try to talk to him. I'm just curious if anyone knows who I'm talking about, or what his story is. He seems like an interesting person.

BJ’s vs Costco vs Sam’s Club

I currently have a BJ's membership and go to the Columbia location--but I'm thinking about switching to another wholesale club.

Which one do you recommend for the HoCo area? Are the inventory and perks better at BJ's, Sam's or Costco--in this area?

Vote.

Today, on Election Day, we pause with deep gratitude for the freedom to choose our leaders and shape the future of our community. At Queen Takes Book, we believe in the power of representation—the strength that comes when every voice, including our own, contributes to a shared vision for tomorrow.

As owners, we are often more reserved. We’re happiest here, connecting quietly over favorite stories, sharing thoughts, and building a community of readers. Though we love every conversation within these walls, we tend to keep to ourselves beyond them.

But today, with our two daughters by our side, we’re proudly casting our ballots with a sense of purpose rooted in their future and inspired by the sacrifices made by so many before us, and look forward to sharing conversation and thoughts about this sacred opportunity with all visitors, regular and new.

Thank you for being part of our community, for sharing in this journey, and for lending your voice to build a stronger, more inclusive tomorrow.

With warmth and gratitude, Katie and Tim

Band doing a photo shoot yesterday near Lake Elkhorn

Yesterday (Monday 11/5/2024), I rode past some folks (a band?) doing a photo shoot in the underpass of Oakland Mills Rd near Lake Elkhorn. As I was passing, I said "I want to see this later!" and they said the name of their band....but I forgot it!
If one of you guys happens to see this, please let me know so I can check it out!
Thanks!

where to play Ping Pong

Hi, do you guys know where to play Ping Pong in Columbia? I'm completely new to this sport but I really like it. I hope there is a quiet place and cheap if I need to pay. Also I would like to meet the people who like this sport and play together.

Overnight Power Outage?

Good morning, neighbors. Did any of y’all lose power last night? We woke up to microwave and oven clocks being off (and a day after we’d reset them!) and the refrigerator shouting that it had been without power for at least some time.

We’re wondering if it was widespread and how long it lasted?

Happy darn-it’s-dark-early Monday.

Voting wait lines

So this is my first time voting here in Columbia/Howard County and I wanted to ask how long the lines are for polling places on Election Day? And what the wait times are like? I only ask this because I use to live in a rural area and there was never really any wait time (like 5 minutes at most) to vote. And I just want to plan accordingly. Thank you. Also for reference I will be voting a the Oakland Mills High School.

Heard about the health benefits (and better taste) of farm fresh foods. Looking for a good place to try things like fresh eggs and raw milk (certified?).
