FYI: Delmarva is an Island!

In case you didn't know, the Delmarva Peninsula has been Delmarva Island since 1927, thanks to the C&D Canal.

It runs through Cecil County MD and New Castle County DE; forming a navigable, oceanic, at-sea-level strait which joins the Chesapeake and Delaware estuaries, thereby isolating Delmarva from the mainland.

A waterway had spanned the isthmus since 1829, but it wasn't entirely at-sea-level and relied on locks, so Delmarva was still technically a peninsula- until the canal was deepened to sea level in the 1920s, creating an island.

There are 12 counties located entirely on the island, with a population of about 818,000 as of the 2020 census, though this does not account for the portions of Cecil and New Castle counties located on the island. Using app.districtbuilder.org, the island's overall population is estimated to be around 890,000.

Episode Topics

Hi everyone. I have a podcast about tragedies that have happened on Delmarva. These include anything from natural and man-made disasters to true crime. I'm from Delaware and was able to get some information on some Delaware events through Reddit (though I'd welcome any other Delaware topics too), but not so much Maryland and Virginia. Does anybody have any ideas on topics, or know of any websites or resources I could use to find some? I want to make sure that the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia are represented on the podcast.

Delaware's history so often gets lost in the shuffle but it is very interesting. First it was a Swedish colony, then taken over by the Dutch and finally by England where it became contested territory between the Baltimores and the Penns. No wonder it has been called the little state with big ideas!
