The People's Republic of Takoma Park
This subreddit is for discussions about the nuclear free city of Takoma Park, MD, the adjacent neighborhood of Takoma, Washington D.C. and nearby areas.
Takoma Park was founded in 1883 as an early suburb of Washington, DC. It was home of the Adventist Church for most of the 20th century...and also came to be known for its music/arts scene and liberal politics. Residents vigorously protested planned freeways in the 1960s, declared the city a "Nuclear-Free Zone" in the early 1980s, and opened voting in city elections to 16-year-olds in 2013 (first in the US!)

Main Street Takoma - "downtown" where there's numerous events and places to go. This is the main stretch of Carroll Ave through the middle of town. "Old Takoma" runs from Takoma Junction at Carroll/Ethan Allen (by the Co-Op), down Carroll, and to 4th St NW in DC (past Metro).

Takoma/Langley Crossroads - at New Hampshire Ave/University Blvd. It's home to a large Salvadoran community & numerous international shops, restaurants, and grocery stores.
Long Branch - at Piney Branch Rd/Flower Ave, it's right between Takoma Park and Silver Spring. Very diverse, especially large Latino presence, and good food! And a flea market too!

Any families with toddlers been in the Takoma Aquatic Center recently? I heard the water temp was supposed to be consistent, but it seemed to be getting colder in the fall. Is the facility freezing? Just wondering if my young toddlers can get in for a 20 minute swim lesson. Thanks.

Hello! I’m considering renting a condo on Maple Ave (near the intersection of Lee and Maple). I’m moving from the College Park area, and aside from a few visits to some restaurants in the “downtown” area, I don’t know much about this particular side of Takoma Park. For those that have lived in this particular area, what do you think? Is it relatively safe? Has anyone lived at any of the condos on Maple Ave and can share their experience?
Hey I am pretty new to the area and I was wondering if there was a place I could take my dog and let him run around off leash. I’m not really looking for a traditional dog park, more of a trail or something that involves walking around. Any ideas?

No shade or sarcasm meant. Honest question.
What has Talisha Searcy done for Takoma Park?
I'm curious about her record.
The 7/11 at Piney Branch Road and Flower Avenue frequently has many empty shelves.
Someone suggested that they are frequently robbed.
I also thought poor management resulted in them running out of things long before they are restocked.
Anyone know what the deal is?
