Conversations about Takoma Park, Maryland and neighboring Takoma, Washington D.C.

The People's Republic of Takoma Park

This subreddit is for discussions about the nuclear free city of Takoma Park, MD, the adjacent neighborhood of Takoma, Washington D.C. and nearby areas.

Takoma Park was founded in 1883 as an early suburb of Washington, DC. It was home of the Adventist Church for most of the 20th century...and also came to be known for its music/arts scene and liberal politics. Residents vigorously protested planned freeways in the 1960s, declared the city a "Nuclear-Free Zone" in the early 1980s, and opened voting in city elections to 16-year-olds in 2013 (first in the US!)

Some neighborhoods

  • Main Street Takoma - "downtown" where there's numerous events and places to go. This is the main stretch of Carroll Ave through the middle of town. "Old Takoma" runs from Takoma Junction at Carroll/Ethan Allen (by the Co-Op), down Carroll, and to 4th St NW in DC (past Metro).

  • Takoma, DC - the side of "Takoma Park" within the District of Columbia

  • Takoma/Langley Crossroads - at New Hampshire Ave/University Blvd. It's home to a large Salvadoran community & numerous international shops, restaurants, and grocery stores.

  • Long Branch - at Piney Branch Rd/Flower Ave, it's right between Takoma Park and Silver Spring. Very diverse, especially large Latino presence, and good food! And a flea market too!

Racist teens driving around in Black SUV with Massachusetts Plates.

Just want to warn everyone that a group of about 3 to 4 teens / young adults were driving around the area today making racist monkey noises and harassing people of color on the street from their car around 3pm or so close to Coolidge High School.

Apartments walking distance to “downtown”

I’m looking online and it seems like the Glade is the only apartment building in walking distance to the shops and restaurants. Are there other apt buildings close to the “downtown”?

Doctor recommendation?

Does anyone love their general practitioner (GP) in Takoma Park or Silver Spring?

Just moved to this side of Montgomery County and am looking for someone closer than my previous GP.

Hopefully they give you an easy time with scheduling appointments and getting prescription refills?

The dream is a doctor who’s also good about health at every size.

Busy Bodies of Belle Ziegler - the Car that Dare Sway that Way

As I was unloading my trunk this evening, a couple walks by

Her: "Isn't that the car that was a swaying at the park." Him: "It sure is! It sure is."

My sensory processing disorder didn't allow me to connect the dots quite quickly enough to respond appropriately
That's how it can be with AuDHD
Not that it matters

Then, I realized you got into that big, dirty, green truck
The one that was parked where I wanted to park, closer to home
I saw you stop next to me earlier, right in the middle of the busy street
Is that why you were trying to get a closer peek?

Did you see what you wanted to see?
Was it a skewed perception or the true reality?
That's what's piqued my curiousity
The human mind is quite an intriguing thing

Could the smirky smiles and lilt to the voices be a sign that you were alluding to something else?
The autistic in me has difficulty discerning these things
Even at my age, I can be a little naive

Next time you see my car swaying why not stop to say hi
Then you can join in & have a little fun. Both of ya!
Let's see if the music moves you enough to get the car a swaying too!

Or, it could be just me because you see, back in 2009 I took vows of celibacy
Renouncing worldly ways, to serve God in pure bhakti
There was no one else in that car, just me, lil ole me
Serving my divine duty, cleaning while singing

Enjoying my time, jamming out to devotionals
That's right, that's my religious music
I'm grooving & vacuuming, in my own zone minding my own
I'm not causing any harm, yet far too many seem so interested in what I'm doing

As if I, a 52yo woman, ought not have one iota of autonomy

Broad daylight
Public park across the street
Kids playing, shouting, giggling with glee
People walking their dogs, riding bikes, scooters
Joggers too
This is such a lovely spot
I feel somewhat safe here
Beautiful trees, pretty black squirrels
What's not to love?!

I hope you were't implying that I'd be in this environment being a dirty girl, rather than a girl cleaning her dirty car.

I mind my business, keep mostly to myself
Don't cause harm
But I know there are quite a few who want to know
What exactly it is I'm doing
I see them, but then I continue doing my thing & minding my own business

I guess I will have make a decal all bright & bold - easy to read

***"If this car is swaying, my owner is slaying

the dirt that is, kindly mind your biz!"***

If you see me in my little corolla at the park and really must know, just stop and ask me directly. I will tell you. I'm pretty much an open book, so long as I know you don't mean any harm.

That saffron you see me wear on the daily symbolizes purity, sacrifice, and detachment
Detachment is key to contentment!
I must confess, detachment is a bit more difficult some days as I'm going through the worst of perimenopause. LOL!

Alas, I am blessed! I am healthy. I can walk, I can laugh, I can sing, I can dance
I just remind myself, this too shall pass
I digress...

Next time, just stop and say hi, I don't bite

Om Namah Shivay

EDIT TO ADD: I park over there, so I am further away from the houses to enjoy my music while I clean my car. I am trying to be courteous

missed connection - TP playground Sunday, Sept 22

We were both at a playground in Takoma Park with our daughters before dinnertime. They didn’t really play together, but we had a nice chat.

You: tall, dark hair, t-shirt, shorts, sneakers. Me: tall, dark hair, sweater, jeans.

Playdate sometime - maybe a Monty Python viewing?

My Organic Market - Silver Spring - Parking

Just a heads up.

The only significant parking near the new My Organic Market in Silver Spring is in their parking garage.

You can only enter ( or leave ) the garage from Georgia Avenue North.

Be careful, there is only 1 ramp for both entering and leaving the garage and it isn't very wide.

The new My Organic Market has a beautiful space, wide aisles, and all of the products you would expect to find at other M.O.M. locations.

Recommendations For New Neighborhood

Hi!! I'm moving to Takoma next month from the Dupont Circle area, and was looking to see if anyone had any recs for the new neighborhood! Looking for new go-to restaurants, bars, good third places (besides the library), and if there are any other fun neighborhood events (like the farmers market) or recurring festivals to know about! Looking forward to being part of this neighborhood soon.

Bus reliability - 12, 25, 17, etc. ?

My husband and I are looking at some houses in Takoma Park, which are about 1.5 miles from Takoma Station. Google maps suggests using a bus first - the 12, 25, or 17 depending on the precise route. We are a one car family and he will use the car for commuting. I would also likely use the bus as my primary mode of transportation as I don't like driving. How is the bus reliability in general? Is using it as my main mode of transport setting setting up for heartbreak? Would appreciate opinions!
