Former endeavors that used to give joy and are fleeting now...

Howdy,

A post from another forum influenced this idea. Basically the gist is things that used to "blow your skirts up" but for one reason or another you're presently indifferent to (but maybe hopeful that'll change in the upcoming seasons).

(1) Deer hunting... Whelp- I didn't get a hunting license again this year with the rifle season kicking off last Saturday here for buck in PA. It's not that I have anything against hunting and years ago I couldn't wait for the season to come. It used to be a big part of my life. These days though- after years upon years of seeing anything but bucks, I started questioning whether I was making the most use of my vacation time to sit in the woods alone, in the cold, only to see a couple of squirrels. The rare times that I did see deer that I could legally shoot, I spent years of making excuses that they weren't 'big enough' to warrant the effort entailed in the aftermath but as the years went by- the fact of the matter is I just don't have the drive I used to carry to kill a deer. Nothing sacred about it/them- just it doesn't give me any joy in doing so like it used to.

(2) Fishing- Good lord did I used to love fishing. Specifically fishing in creeks for trout. I never got into fly fishing but growing up- I was permitted a day off of school for my birthday (which coincided with trout season here in PA) and I picked that every single time because I just enjoyed the heck out of that. About 10 years or so ago though- it was like a switch flipped and I stopped caring about chasing after stocked fish. To be fair, I was in my last year (of my 2nd attempt of college) and I was taking a heavy course load and chasing after fish had to take a backseat to reading textbooks and I don't think I ever rejuvenated that passion after I graduated from college.

(3) I used to love going backpacking. It honestly scratched a lot of my itches, I loved being in the PA woods, I'm a self professed 'gear nerd' and would get untold hours of enjoyment just researching the latest and greatest equipment for backpacking but in this pursuit- I simply lost all of my friends who used to join in on the adventure and it stopped being fun doing it by myself.

(4) Back to hunting- but birds this time instead of deer, by and large, chasing pheasants & grouse was always my favorite form of hunting. It just was.. different I'd say, you didn't have to worry about being quiet or stalking them, you just walked the fields with all of your friends and talked smack until a bird exploded up from your footsteps and then the whole line instantly went alive trying to pop said bird. Similar to my previous comments about backpacking, those friends either died or moved onto other things. The grouse in PA all but disappeared and the pheasants turned into a sore point for me where the game commission started charging a stamp that cost more than a regular hunting license to participate in pheasant hunting but cut the stocking of said pheasants by more than half in the same year. That was the end of grouse/pheasant hunting for me.

(5) Waterfowl hunting- that was a relatively new one for me and different enough to fill the gaps left behind from my grouse/pheasant pursuits, but that was also dependent on having a friend with a boat/decoys (for ducks) or a friend with a relationship with a farmer and also decoys (for geese). Whelp- they all got married & got out of the waterfowl game.

(6) Concerts- I used to be the biggest concert guy you'd ever met, 20 years or so ago, I saw them all and I was front row and center. I was there with my battle buddies and a mosh pit started at a Korn/whoever else it was concert 20 years ago and someone left with a broken collar bone. I was there at a 3 Days Grace/Breaking Benjamin concert where some lady literally bought the shirt off of my roommates back depicting a 'working girl next to a pole' and the text "I support single moms". Now... I don't keep up with modern music nor do I even care to. I seldom participate in concerts but when I do, I opt for the cheap seats far away from the crowds and give me a place to park my butt.

(7) Holidays (in general)- I remember when I used to care about New Years, St. Patricks Day (that one especially), Memorial Day, 4th of July, Halloween, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. Now- I feel like New Year's is amateur hour for the drunks and I wouldn't dare be on the roads for it, St Patricks Day isn't far behind that. Memorial Day is nothing more than a commercial excuse anymore to put things on sale while I try to keep whatever demons I may have in check, 4th of July- good excuse to shoot off fireworks. Veteran's Day... I'm just going to skip sharing my opinions on that one. Thanksgiving is now a financial and/or expected societal/familial burden and Christmas... heck I couldn't tell you the last time this was a holiday/day that held any 'magic'... maybe it did in 2007 for me but that pursuit is also long gone. Now, at least for me, it's nothing more than a commercial pursuit to buy family members crap they felt forced to write a list for so they in turn can also buy you crap that you felt obligated to write a list for.

Ugh- sorry, not trying to be bitter by any means, I had oral surgery this afternoon and my jaw is just killing me and I can't sleep.

Background check went into research

Over the past weekend i went to bass pro to buy my first gun and picked out a rifle to use for hunting next year. During my background check they told me it went into research. Im not entirely sure i understand what that means and i also I’m not sure why it would do that. I have zero type of criminal record or anything like that so i’m just confused as to why it would do that.

Question for an inbound resident

Hi all, I'm potentially moving down to Philadelphia and had some questions regarding gun laws:

  1. When I first move in, I won't have a License to Carry Firearms. I think I can still legally bring and own a shotgun (over-under) from another state without an LTCF?

1a) I hear that without a LTCF pistols can only be transported directly to/from the range even if locked separately from ammunition in car - is the same true with long guns or is it more permissive to take stops that aren't directly going to/from the range with a shotgun (also assuming locked separate from ammunition in car)?

1b) Do I need to wait until my drivers license is switched over to PA before keeping the shotgun from another state in my residence?

  1. I want to apply for the LTCF soon when I move here, but as I'll be new and won't know anyone for a bit. I've seen mixed messages on just how "optional" the references on the LTCF form are. Can I proceed sooner with references, or is it really best to wait until I've nailed down some locals to vouch for me?

Thanks for your help!

expunged record, but denied CCW?

hello, i don’t normally post on reddit but i need some advice on what my next steps should be. little backstory, back in 2020 when i was 17 i got a paraphernalia and a weed charge, which i ended up taking an ARD for. i was told that once completed, my record would be expunged. (i can’t find anything about it on paEdocket so i take it that’s true?) i completed everything they wanted me to, paid off my fine, etc etc and i had a final court hearing stating i was free and my record was expunged. fast forward a few years to when i turn 21, i go purchase a firearm from my local rural king, everything goes well background check comes back quick and i was in and out in 30 minutes. that same day i fill the form out for my ccw and i send it in. about a week later i get a call from my local sheriffs office and they tell me that i was denied and if i would like they can mail me something with the reasoning why so i did and it turns out i got denied for that old charge that was supposed to be expunged. i called in letting them know that i can just bring in the paperwork stating it was expunged and we can take care of it, but it was 4 years ago now i don’t have that paperwork anymore. i called down to the probation office i had and got in touch with my old probation officer, who said he remembered me and my case, but said they don’t have any record of the paperwork because it was expunged already and they shred all documents. so, now im really stumped and confused on what i should do next. i was told to get a lawyer and file for expungement, but how will that work if it was already expunged? if anyone has any tips for me that would be highly appreciated. i apologize for the long post, i wanted to add as much info as i could to minimize questions!

Gun shops in or near SEPA that have a large or weird selection of guns?

Looking to hopefully go in store and buy something after the holidays are over. I live in Delco but most of the shops around here are pretty small. Are there any shops somewhat close by that have a larger selection of in stock guns to browse, preferably AKs? But really I’m not sure what I’m looking for. Any recs?

sgl205 Range

This location supposedly has a pistol range as well as a rifle, shotgun, and archery range. Last time I went back in March, I couldn't find the pistol range it supposedly had. Does anyone know, if you've been there in the last couple months, if the pistol range is built or if it's just hidden somewhere?

Rifle Scope Mounting

Hi all. I have a DD MK12 with a Bushnell Rifle Scope mounted on it. I have noticed with having the bolts tightened for the mounting point the scope still becomes “slanted” when shooting. What do you do to avoid this from happening. My neighbor earlier was telling me to use red loctite but I feel like that’s a permanent fix and if I needed to take the scope off it wouldn’t come off. What’s your $0.02?

Buying A Firearm Online for FFL Transfer as Permanent Resident

I was wondering whether or not a permanent resident is able to purchase a firearm online and have it shipped to an FFL. I know that there is paperwork and a background check that is done every time in store. How does online work?

Wicen's - steel?

With URC losing almost all their range privileges, we looking around what other ranges we could join that have steel (and not require a complex membership aside from just signing up and joining a seminar). We heard Wicen's "can" theoretically let you shoot steel if you take a class or they vet you. I get why they would do this of course, but can someone speak to how this works or time?

do they want you to come a few times and chum up the folks till they see you aren't a danger... or can wife and I just get the 4 day passes and take a quick session all the same day? (we're looking at the 100 yard steel options if possible).

other suggestions for steel ranges in the area without complex memberships are welcome as well.

Range recommendations for a first time shooter?

Im from ny and I’ve never shot a gun before but it’s something id like to try at least once. The laws are too strict here and I was thinking about Jersey but I heard someone recommended Philadelphia as a good place to go for it. Any places that are relatively cheap and beginner friendly are appreciated!!

Ski Trip Carry Advice

I have a PA CCL and I go on an annual solo ski trip that takes me through NY, Vermont, NH, and Canada. I, typically, sleep in my van at the resorts that allow it. I wish to carry my .22lr 9 round H&R Model 900 revolver with me. Does anyone have experience/advice navigating the gun laws when transporting through NY and/or gun storage before entering Canada? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Can I transport a couple of long guns and a handgun in my girlfriend's car with me as a passenger?

Hi,

Bit of a specific question here, but my girlfriend and I will be going to my parents' house for Thanksgiving and she will be driving her vehicle since mine will be in the shop.

My parents want me to take one of my hunting rifles, a shotgun, and a handgun with me back to my house and I was hoping we could legally transport them from this trip back to my house (parents live a couple of hours away from my house now).

I have my license to carry firearms (she doesn't), but I haven't transported guns before in a vehicle that wasn't my own. Just don't want my girlfriend to get in any trouble because of any technicalities I'm missing.

Thanks!

Hey guys, as an out of state resident what are the most "non resident friendly" towns/cities?

Looking to have the quickest turn around time as I can manage.

I've got my home state ccw and a few other states as well.

Thanks.

What are the rules& laws about selling ammo and reloading materials at gun show, without a table?

I have some bullets, primers, and 430 rounds of 7.62x54r factory 188 to sell. I believe this is all legal in PA to sell directly to someone and I'm guessing the only way to do it is at a gun show. It certainly isn't enough to rent a table....can I bring it inside and try to sell it or do I need to be weird and stand outside the door? Is that legal? Will the gun show folks be annoyed?

Philadelphia Carry Rules

Hi Everyone, I am a NYC CCW resident headed to Philadelphia tomorrow for the marathon. I have a PA concealed license too.

I read all the PA and Philly rules I can find about where I can and cannot have my firearm on me in the City Of Brotherly Love. There will be security at the marathon finish line. Would this be a restricted area similar to NYC?

Thank you for the help.

Question about “long gun” transportation

Apologies if this question has been asked before, but nothing I’ve looked up has given me a definitive answer.

My understanding with PA law is that there’s effectively two classes of firearms:

  1. “Firearms” which are just pistols and NFA items

  2. “Long Guns” which are non NFA rifles and shotguns

I know the restrictions around transport are strict regarding firearms without a permit (as in you can only go to and from the range while having them in your vehicle).

My question is do the same restrictions apply to long guns? I know they have to be unloaded and inaccessible during transport, but am I committing a crime if I stop at McDonald’s or something while heading back from the range (I do not currently have the carry permit)?

Anyone put their guns at consignment w/ Tanners in Jamison?

I have 2 handguns and a rifle. I'm not really sure how to value them and hoping Tanners will at least be fair? I'm not looking to squeeze all the money I can. Unlike Nissan Altima sellers, I don't know what I have. :)

Ruger LC9 - On Gunbroker.com

Walther P22 - On Gunbroker.com

Mosin Nagant M91/30 Izhevsk variety. - On Gunbroker.com

Also, I have 430 rounds of 7.62x54 from factory 188 but will likely need to sell that at a gunshot.

**Edit** I'm leaving the whole post up in case someone in the future as a similar question. I had a few offers on the Mosin but decided to put it up on GB. However, I still have this ammo I'd like to sell. $240 takes it...but I keep the ammo can. It is wrapped in packs of 20, in brown paper with 10 loose. 430 rounds total.
