This subreddit is for the civil discussion of all things regarding California gun laws, rules, regulations and ownership.

Welcome to the California Guns subreddit!

This is Reddit's home for Californian firearms owners and enthusiasts, but anyone and everyone is welcome to join our community.

Use this sub to discuss and ask questions about California's gun laws and politics.

Subreddit Rules

  1. Remain on topic and be respectful to others. Avoid abusive language and slurs. We encourage any and all lawful discussions of California firearms and related laws.

  2. Don't incriminate yourself or others by what you post; for example, refrain from posting images of non-CA compliant rifles, as others may assume that you own an illegal "assault weapon". Do not discuss or promote illegal activity.

  3. All advertising, selling, or trading of firearms, ammunition, or accessories is completely prohibited. This includes jokes. No price checks, no asking where to sell guns.

  4. We're here not only to discuss but to educate; users may not have seen previous posts so we highly encourage re-posts rather than forbid them and recommend waiting at least a week before re-posting. In addition, there is no such thing as a stupid question. Ask away.

  5. Follow Reddit's rules and have a pleasant stay!

The 4 Rules of Gun Safety ("The 4 Rules")

  1. Treat all guns as if they're loaded (even when you know they aren't).

  2. Never point the muzzle at anything you aren't willing to destroy.

  3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target.

  4. Know your target and what is beyond it (avoid any and all collateral damage).

Question about off-roster guns transfers in an unusual scenario...

Say one were to purchase a gun, that was on the CA roster, from an out-of-state online gun dealer, and that gun was then shipped directly from the online dealer to a CA FFL. And somewhere in the timeline of the gun being shipped to the FFL and the FFL submitting the DROS information, the gun is taken off roster. What happens then?

Is the FFL still allowed to go forward with the transfer? And if not what happens with the gun?

Cheap magnifier?

I was thinking of adding a magnifier to my red dot, and was wondering if cheaping out on a magnifier is okay since it's mainly just a leans.

M1 Carbine yes or no?

Pro: It’s small. It’s handy. Cartridge is more powerful than 9mm but recoil is still very manageable. Cartridge seems to fill a special niche in terms of purpose and ballistics. I’ve shot one before and it felt great and natural for some reason. Modern reproductions are available.

Con: cartridge is not as commercially available as 9mm. Modern reproductions are expensive as fuck. I don’t really see any magazines being sold in brick and mortar stores.

Do the cons outweigh the pros? I want to think about it before spending like $1500 on an inland reproduction

Repost(oops) First AR Pistol Build

Made the silly mistake of posting my first Reddit post in the late hours of the night, and completely forgot to add that my Aero X15 lower IS REGISTERED AS A PISTOL IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA. Now that my dog has a new outlook on life, and I’ve got a little bit of a better understanding of posting. Are there any pieces of advice or mod recommendations that might do my pistol well. I’ve got a magpul tapeswitch and an xps2 in fde on the way. I’m interested in the rail wraps that secure the tape-switch wire. Big ups to the people that let me know of my mistake lol.

In their special session to trump-proof California senator Blakespear has introduced some kind of gun control legislation probably related to Red flag laws.

The full text is not available yet

The bill is numbered sb15.

CCW Pro OC

Doss anyone else have the issue where you’re not able to enter anything into the application? I cannot proceed without filling out this red box. It does not allow me to enter anything. I’ve tried many different browsers still no luck. Has anyone else had this issue? My issuing agency is Orange County. When I do to try click on the box I get an autofill / share option on the top every time no matter the web browser.

Thumb Rest for S&W FPC Carbine?

Just recently purchased a folding carbine 9mm. Like it so far, but like most of us, not a fan of the fin grip. Anyone know where I can get a thumb rest that will fit it? I've seen quite a few for ARs and AKs, but not Carbines. Thanks!

Orange County Sheriff Department CCW Timeline

I put in my application with the OCSD on 11/11/24 and I currently have an appointment scheduled for 6/19/25. Has anyone had luck getting their interview pushed up with the OCSD by contacting them? Or do I need to just check the website everyday and hope an earlier appointment becomes available?

11% Sin Tax

Buying a gun or ammo from outside of California and ship it to a local ffl, do I have to pay the 11% tax or just the state tax? Or is the tax will be depending on the ffl? Has anyone experienced this?

Please advise. Thank you.

New CCW holder questions

After 9 months or so I finally have my appointment to pick up my CCW this week. I have two primary questions:

  1. It seems to me that CCW insurance is a must. Who is the best company out there? I see USCCA ads everywhere, but I can’t imagine they are the best.

  2. What is the best resource/website for keeping up with where you can and cannot carry in California? I am aware of current restrictions, but was wondering if there was a preferred website for keeping up with ever changing laws/restrictions?

I appreciate any input!

Transporting guns in small single cab mini truck

How do I legally transport in a single cab mini truck? There is no trunk and because it’s so small there’s no where that’s out of reach, say I’m going to the range so I’ve got all my guns with me, how do I transport them? I’m sure as shit not leaving a bunch of guns in the bed of my truck and sitting next to me in the cab seems like I’m asking for trouble

First gun suggestions - full size

Just took a basic firearm course and am planning on going and looking at handguns tomorrow.

Things I learned, (1) my hands are huge. Like the Glock 17 we used for practice on the range was hard for me to get my hands to be secure without being too tight. (2) it is way easier to shoot with a red dot than iron sights.

So… any suggestions for which CA compliant guns I should consider? No real limit on price I guess so long as we aren’t being stupid (no $5K frames whatever).

Short list currently:

  1. Glock 17/34
  2. Sig P320 - but I see lots of talk about holster discharges
  3. Beretta 92FS - not a huge fan of DA/SA but it isn’t the end of the world either.
  4. CZ SP01
  5. S&W M&P 9 - don’t see a lot about this one

Goal is range shooting first with an eventual move into three gun (my friend who is getting me into this hobby is pushing me towards three gun and it looks fun.)

I don’t mind upgrading slides or trigger groups or whatever, but please let me know if your recommendation includes an upgrade to make it worth it!

Compact .40, .380, or .45 Caliber?

I am not all that familiar with firearms, so coming here for some help to find what I'm looking for. I'd like a compact pistol in either a .40, .380. or 45 caliber and one that I can mount a Red Dot on. This would be used as a sidearm for hunting in Mountain Lion land. I've shot a 10mm, and believe that is overkill. So far all i've found is a .40 SW Shield, but not sure if the Red Dot can be mounted on that.

Nevadan here, that camps/offroads in CA with a question on CA Compliance

Hey everyone, So sorry if this has been posted here a bunch of times. I live in Vegas, but a few times a year go dispersed camping in California. Ive been looking to buy a sig p365 Macro for CC and just personal protection, on solo camping trips, I would ideally like to bring that with. Would I be covered if I bought the CA Compliant version of that pistol, and had it in the vehicle with me when I sleep at night?
Im going to buy one either way, and obviously I would rather have the 17 round version. I would make the concession if it meant I could legally be armed at night while camping.

thank you!

Beware of Primary Arms warranty

This is just a small rant of how disappointed I am with Primary Arms and their warranty process. I submitted a claim for a scope id had for some time and was surprised to find that they made me cover the shipping for the return. Frustrated, I went ahead and paid, boxed up the scope and sent it out. Other than my shipment delivered notification and had no idea until I reached out to ensure that had in fact received it. From there I had no communication from anyone there until about 2 weeks later when I got a fedex notification that a package was on its way from Primary Arms. Another week goes by and I finally get the "replacement scope". I open the package only to find an older different model scope that doesn't have the same reticle I submitted. I reached back out to figure out what happened and was told I was sent the same scope I sent. I provided damning evidence that they had made an error and mustve not even examined the scope I sent otherwise thay would've seen it was in fact the incorrect replacement. After being told I was wrong they've stopped responding and I can only assume that they will not be correcting their mistake. To that I say F#(k you Primary Arms...

DT11 ACS owners near SF Bay Area

I am interested in buying a DT11 ACS for my Trap shooting. Seeing as how that is a 12k purchase I would like to try before I buy. I am currently shooting a 725 Trap Max. Anyone out there with a DT11 ACS open to meeting up so I can shoot a few rounds? I am in the East Bay but can drive any reasonable distance to meet up. I am a Member at Martinez but routinely shoot at Livermore and Manteca.

Questions about legality (from nonresident)

If I had to travel through California with a Glock-19 and an AR (not compliant), as well as standard capacity magazines, how could I do so legally? I understand it would simply be best to not have the firearms at all, but if I hypothetically made a foray into California from a neighboring state where the firearms are legal, how could I do so legally (if its possible)? Would it suffice to detach the upper and lower receiver of the AR and not assemble them as long as I am in the state? Is it illegal to possess loaded or unloaded standard capacity magazines (30rd PMAGs, 15rd Glock mags) in the state? What are the transport requirements for the Glock?

I have done some research. Best I can tell, as long as the upper and lower receiver of the AR are detached, it does not qualify as a assault weapon and is legal to possess, and the handgun must simply be unloaded and in a locked container. I am unsure, however about the magazines.

CCW Timeline (LASD)

Trying to crowdsource an approximate date for my training orders.

07/21/23 - applied, uploaded all documents 08/07/24 - phone interview ??/??/?? - training orders

Called the CCW unit, was told I’m in the queue with no estimated date for training orders. I was originally told 3 months from interview date.

Anyone that has a similar timeline can give any insight?
