AK Gunsmiths?

Anyone able to recommend some quality AK gunsmiths? I had previously reached out to ironborn armory in the past and while they quoted me prices I was never able to actually get it in to them. So looking for a place that I don’t have to schedule a drop off day and time and can just drop it off when my schedule allows.

Wolf Creek Lanes to be visited by State Forest Advisory Committee

There will be a closure of the lanes on May 16th (next Thursday), at some point, when the Advisory Committee goes in to view. They'll reopen the lanes after they are done. If you are shooting at that time, they will be asking you to leave until they are done.

I just heard today, this is happening May 16th & 17th. The Rec Mngr sent me an email about a State Forest Advisory Committee Tour happening in the Tillamook and Clatsop State Forests. On their tour, they are stopping by Wolf Creek Shooting Lanes (the 16th). Now get this...

Recently, ODF staff went to the lanes to try to clean them up enough to be presentable for the Advisory Committee tour. The staff was a bit overwhelmed and they didn't get much done.

Here's a copy of what they said...

"Tara and I did a full day of clean up at the Wolf creek lanes. There is a SIGNIFICANT amount of damage in all lanes that I'm not sure what the best solution could be. We hauled 5 large trash bags out of lane 4 but there is still a massive amount to clean. Not to mention the dump pile on the side of the mountain. I suggest getting a WO in place for boulders around lane 4 to prevent people backing up and dumping trash off the mountain side (I did a survey123).

All four boards need new signs before the 17th tour takes place.

Attached are pictures of all 4 info boards and videos of lane 1 & 3. As well as a before and after of lane 4.

https://preview.redd.it/w0day7ydiazc1.jpg?width=1140&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=edee95511f0cf1dba1e22ea55e725bfc1d1e8a57

I'm not sure a full day with FMT's could tackle all the trash. Also, I've never felt so unsafe while in a "facility". While in lane 4 someone in lane 3 was shooting so close Tara and I both heard the whiz of multiple bullets. I heard 9 and 6 were VERY close, but I cant speak for how uncomfortable Tara felt.

Thank you,..."

Later today, I got an email from ODF announcing the State Forest Advisory Committee Tour. Here's what it said:

*"*State Forests Advisory Committee hosts tour May 16, meets May 17 in Forest Grove

SALEM, Ore. – An Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) state forests advisory group will host a tour of forestland in portions of the Tillamook and Clatsop State Forests on May 16 and meet on May 17 in Forest Grove, and the meeting will have a virtual option via Zoom.

The public is welcome at both events, hosted by the State Forests Advisory Committee (SFAC). The meeting agenda will be posted on the SFAC webpage.

Details

Forest Tour*: Meets at 8:30 a.m. on May 16 at the Hornshuh Creek fire Station #14 at 49021 NW Sunset Highway in Banks. The tour will visit the Wolf Creek Target Shooting Lanes, a partial cut harvest for habitat development, and a stop at Reehers Camp to hear and see the Salmonberry trail project. RSVP is requested for the forest tour so that attendees can be provided safety equipment..."*

I don't know who is on the Advisory Committee, but I wouldn't doubt it if they are going to be appalled by the site they see at the lanes. They will be talking about it at the meeting on the 17th.

And the signs! No one told me how faded and full of bullet holes they are! I thought they were just fine and we wouldn't have to do anything with them at the 25th cleanup. So today I ordered all new signs to be printed (another surprise expense for the lanes). I'm hoping they'll be printed by this Friday and I'll go replace all signs on Saturday. While I'm there, I'll try to get as much of the big ugly trash as I can at each lane.

I'm not holding my breath for a good outcome of their visit. Stand by for news if we keep or loose the lanes.

Bill

BTW, they have not determined a cause of the recent fire above Lane 3, yet. They suspect it was an explosive device or tracer rounds.

range to sight in .30-06?

would prefer at least 100 yards. Within an hour or so of Portland. Is it that hard to find? I inherited a few rifles I used to shoot as a kid with no scopes. (one has a scope now.) No drama, safe shooter. prefer not to go out to NF land and squabble over space.

Questions about moving to Oregon with guns

Hey so there is a good chance I will be moving to around the Portland area from Montana at the end of the summer depending on how a job interview goes. From what I have seen looking briefly online its seams that measure 114's 10 round mags would be my primary concern but I wanted to check if there was any other weird stuff to be aware of. Most of my concern is centered around what I could carry while hiking/camping/backpacking, I haven't gone the daily CCW route yet and don't have much interest in it at the moment. Also while I don't have a 556 ar yet I plan to get one in the next year, would it be worth picking up some 30rd mags here in Montana before moving?

As to what I have that I think might be a problem:

I have several pistols and all of them have more than 10 round mags. I primarily open carry them here while hiking here with the exception of a HK mark23 I have that I sometimes carry in a hill people gear chest rig since I cant find a holster with good retention that I like for it. If I'm going backpacking in an area with lots of bears I also have a M4 with a 7rd tube and an ar chambered in 458 and I'll usually just carry one of those instead of a pistol. Also currently waiting on a silencer for a 22 to use for plinking while I'm car camping on blm land out here.

Portland, OR to invest $500k for summer "gun violence prevention" program.

So Who's applying, along with your other local state gun control groups :)

They are so close to getting it about what to focus on to reduce crime and violence. Unfortunately, they still seem super focused on the "gun" part of "gun violence", IMHO.

The closing quote is from another gun control group "gun prevention manager" that would think leashing up and muzzling guns, like you might a dangerous dog, is "common sense and reasonable", and has supported gun control laws in Oregon that burden and punish your average gun owner more than those actually committing violence. Still, it does give me hope that we are at least moving the conversation in the right direction. It will likely take several more laws to be overturned in the courts to make them focus on it, though.

Can I buy magazines for another person?

Buddy is a Washington resident and wants me to buy him some 15 round magazines since I’m an Oregon resident. I don’t know shit about guns so it’ll probably be obvious at the shop I’m not getting them for myself. Is this putting myself in legal trouble or are there no laws against buying parts for someone else?

Edit:

Haha alright y’all have convinced me not to do this. Honestly just wasn’t sure what the legal standing was, as I’ve heard purchasing a firearm for some one is illegal, but nothing about parts. Thanks for all the speedy advice.

Question about bullet material

I saw a clip of a bullet striking a prince Rupert’s drop and shattering (the bullet shattered). So I was wondering if anyone knew if bullets could be made out of glass? I think that’d be pretty cool! Maybe a cheaper material for lead free bullets than copper.

Free Lock Boxes PT 2

I told them I had plenty of them. And they said they couldn’t take it back since it had my firearm in it… I really despise Kaiser Permanente but this helps me despise them .0001% less.

Heads Up Free Lock Boxes

Just take your CCW with you to Kaiser emergency room and go through metal detectors and they ask you to put weapon in car or lock it in a lock box after you fill out a form. I refused to leave in car because I drove my car without a lockable box in it at 4am for a family medical emergency.

I even had to wait for them to unwrap the brand new box lol! 🗃️

Tired of having orders cancelled

This past month I've had an order cancelled by WTC Arms because of measure 114, and B.King won't even allow me to buy a Magpul stock set, let alone pmags. Is it worth the energy to argue with companies that do this?

We're cleaning up Wolf Creek Shooting Lanes

It's on for May 25th, Saturday, from 9 AM to about 1 PM. All 4 lanes will be closed to target shooting during this time. We'll be removing trash and graffiti.

ODF is covering the disposal costs, Trash No Land is organizing it and providing lunch. We need plenty of volunteers to make it easy on all of us. Not only that, but a strong showing of volunteers helps put gun owners in a good light (which isn't very often these days!). Typical 'After Party' happens after lunch with a group shoot.

Details on the Trash No Land website Events page:

https://www.trashnoland.org/wolf-creek-lanes-cleanup/

If anyone would like a flyer of the May 25th cleanup event, I have one as a PDF file I can send you, but I'll need your email address in a private message (I can't upload a PDF file). It's black & white, 8 1/2 x 11. You'll need to print it.

I emailed it to Oregon Rifle Works Tigard, 540 Training .com, HighLine Firearms in Newberg, Northwest Armory in Tigard, and Sportsman's Warehouse in Hillsboro. So if you visit those stores, peak around to see if it's posted.

If you have a favorite gun store, print a copy and take it in to them.

Thanks,

Bill

100 yards+ Range in the valley

I live in salem and I’ve been trying to find a range/area that will let me shoot beyond 75 yards. I would prefer if it’s within 90 minutes of me. Does anyone know of a place that’s free?

Oregon Rifleworks / fuddlore

So I popped into ORW in Tigard OR for the first time Friday. I'm an AK guy so looked at all the AKs on the wall (KUSA and Riley Defense). and the one AK in the used rack (PAP M92 PV). Prices were on the expensive end (I'm sure rent in Tigard ain't cheap).

While I was just looking around, a 50-60yr old guy came in, and started asking one of the employees there about the AKs. He said his son wanted one, but it was evident that he didn't really know what he was looking for and didn't really know what he was talking about.

Here's what I heard the employee tell him

  • All the AKs on the wall are "American Made." (He said that in a complimentary way). He then went on to say that "they may have some russian parts but the receivers are all made in the US").

  • You can only find the imports as used, older models. Suggesting that you cannot buy any imported AKs brand new anymore.

  • When pointing to the M92 pistol in the used rack, he said it was a "Krink."

As any of you AK aficionados know, none of these three bullet points are correct. It was very disappointing to hear the gunstore employee spouting misinformation and fuddlore at this guy. After he left the shop, I gave him more accurate information about the state of imported AKs and the issues with some (all?) US made AKs.

I know they are a business and are trying to make money, but to do it on the backs of customers while actively feeding them lies (or possibly worse yet -- actively spouting off with ignorance of the topic) is distressing.

Definitely makes me not want to ever grace their shop again.

Seeking input on a 3x or 5x magnifier for my Vortex Crossfire RDS

Title is fairly self explanatory. I'm looking for a decent, yet affordable 3x or 5x magnifier to pair with my Vortex Crossfire RDS which came as a freebie with my AR-15. Currently, looking seriously at Vortex VMX-3T and the Sig Juliet5 Micro. This will go on my Springfield Saint Victor, which does not have a super long Pic rail. I'm a recreational shooter, so I don't need top of the line, just decent quality and dependability at a reasonable price. Right now, I can get either magnifier for about $175.

Vortex VMX-3T - I know this isn't the newer "Micro" model, but it is almost $130 less (and that buys a lot of 556 ammo and range time)

Sig Juliet5 Micro and 3 Micro are both on sale for about $160-$175 at Battle Hawk Armory.

So any recommendations, thoughts, experiences, sage advice

Update on my gunsmithing

I recently had to part ways with Wooster Armory and am currently between jobs. Reddit has always been a very positive place for me in terms of my work, so I wanted to update everyone. I hope to be back on my feet very soon at another local shop, but am also exploring starting my own venture. I will keep everyone updated.

If you had firearms with me for work at Wooster, I did my best to call everyone with my very limited time. If you did not get a call, your firearms are still at Wooster and can be picked up.

I have no affiliation with Wooster, so I cannot answer any questions about their future. Please call them for those questions.

Feel free to PM me with any gunsmithing questions in the meantime and I'll update when I'm back up and running!

Is it just me or does everyone get treated like an asshole when they try to buy ammo here? I love the store overall and it's convenient for me but the people who work the gun counter now are just the worst.

Does a valid in-state CHL work for Gun Purchases in Oregon?

Storytime: I went into Northwest Armory the other day with the intent to purchase a .22 rifle. Now, I’m own several guns and have done the background check process multiple times in Oregon in the last few years (including after Measure 114….this is important for later) so I’m pretty use to the process. When I told the guy at the store what I wanted and was ready to sign the paperwork, I gave him my valid CHL with current address on it. He looked at me and said “We don’t take those. We only can take Oregon Driver’s Licenses.” I was super confused because a few months earlier, I purchased a handgun at another store in the area with my CHL as my ID and the process went flawlessly.

Now, I was aware that the NICS has a long queue currently, and last time I used my CHL for my purchase, I was able “skip” the queue and take it home the same day instead of having to wait several days like most people. I wanted to see if that would happen again with this purchase, which is why I gave him my CHL. So, the guy and I had a back and forth conversation about the ID thing and one of his arguments was “Well, you may have been able to use a CHL before Measure 114, but not now.” This whole situation felt ridiculous to me and left me frustrated because the guy was so adamant about his reasoning, but I wanted to get some insight on this situation.

Am I wrong for thinking a CHL is a valid form of ID for GUN purchase or is he wrong?

I have been searching in the actual Measure for what he is describing and can only find that a “photo ID” is required. Does a CHL not count in this regard??

Looking to understand selling procedure and which lgs’s will buy.

Hi all, moved here about a year ago. Basic gist is I’m in a tight spot monetarily and am looking to let go of a gun or two to cover some rent.

I don’t have an Oregon ID yet, but I have established residency other ways. Looking for a rundown of who out of the lgs’s here do buy used/or NiB for that matter, and also what proof of residency I might need.

Thanks for any help!

Oregon Knife Law Question

I'm quite familiar with our gun/CHL laws but relatively clueless when it comes to knives. I have a side-folding switch blade (with a safety and button release) I got from a gun show that I am quite fond of. I work in a trade so it is pretty typical for me to have a pocket knife clipped to my pocket (to my understanding this is considered "open carry" as it is visible on my person). At what point does it become "concealed carry" (which is illegal when it comes to switchblades in Oregon)? Is it the same as firearms where it needs to be visible from the outside of the vehicle?

Is North Fork Wolf Creek Rd Shooting Lanes shut down?

I got a message yesterday, Friday, that the gate was closed. I called the ODF office in Forest Grove and they said there was a fire and an investigation is underway. No further info as of 4:30 PM.

I don't know if it's the main gate to NF Wolf Creek Road, or the gate at the spur road that leads up to the lanes.

Any one have eyes and ears on the situation?
