I'm visiting NYC next week and want to go to a throwback 2000s/10s songs or Latin club. Are there any recommendations? Like free for ladies before a certain time. Btw this will be on a weekday like Tuesday or Wednesday.
im planning on taking the ferry for the first time.
my plan is to originate from east 90th st and embark at wall st pier 11. it looks like the soundview route will be sailing on the west side while the astoria route on the east side of the river.
is there much of a difference in terms of the view of nyc skyline depending on which ferry i take? or are they equally great for sightseeing?
i checked on google maps, it says astoria is around 50 minute long and soundview is only 37 minutes. i wonder if the view from the astoria ferry is worth the extra time onboard at all.
thank you guys! appreciate it.
Friends, I will be spending an extended period of time in the city beginning in January, and would like to find any philosophy reading group or discussion club or meeting, get together or something for those interested in philosophy (as in the Western Philosophical tradition from the ancients like Plato and Aristotle to moderns like Descartes and Kant, not philosophy in any other sense).
Thanks for any tips or leads!
Anyone live here? Any thoughts on the building? Rent/bought?
Hi NYC
My sister is struggling with severe mental illness. Bad anxiety. Depression. Untreated ADHD. And wake and bake level cannabis use.
Making her fail at college (well not attend).
We really need to get her help from a psychiatrist. At this point we have to do medication too.
Any recs ?
Private pay is preferred —we’ve had bad experiences with private insurance care.

So, after years of chronic sinus infections, trying every medication, every homeopathic remedy, several rounds of antibiotics every year, I am ready to look into surgical options. I have a “sinus guy” who has a crazy old machine that flushes my whole shit out, but it’s $300 to see him every visit and it’s just not feasible for the long run. Anyone here who had garbage sinuses and had surgery? Any doctor recommendations? I’m going through a box of 500 tissues every other day every time I get a sinus infection, and I can’t live like this anymore. Please help!

I been living here for a few months now, and i have found one smoke shop/ convenience that sells them, and they no longer carry it.
Any spots that you guys can put me on to?
My daughter and 3 friends want to visit NYC for the first time in Dec over winter break from college. Anyone know of any decent, less expensive hotels that will allow booking by people their age? So far, POD hotels have been recommended but we would have to book 2 rooms based on availability at the one they’d want to be at, and that’s a bit more expensive. Appreciate ideas!
If a family member passes can another family member take the apt? That family member was living there for over the two year requirement to take over, but what happens with the rent? Does it go to market value? I know the family member has rights regarding staying but I don’t see specifics on how that all works. Does it simply just stay at the current rent control price? If anyone has any info please let me know. We feel like getting in contact direct might be a setback if they have too much info. We’d like to keep it all above board but also but don’t want to short ourselves in the foot with all this. TYSMIA!
I completely understand why a lot of hotels have a check-in age of 21, but I’m trying to find one that doesn’t that still has a good view and floor to ceiling windows. The price isn’t much of a factor. We also have valid military IDs if that helps. It does down here, but I’m not sure about New York.
Linkedin, indeed and facebook nyc job group - so many job applications that lead no where or to scams. I've a BA and 10 years solid work experience and references if need be. So - where are people applying that lead to job hiring and/or staffing firms? (Other than min wage or seasonal ofc) this is roughest/longest it has ever been for me
My friend lived in this apartment before me and paid $2,700. In May 2023, I moved in and it was raised to $2,900. This year (May 2024) my landlord raised to $3,500. I'd only lived there a year! I got her down to $3,100 (because I had a text from her son saying it wouldn't go up any higher than that and said she had to honor it for 2024) but I am SURE come May 2025, she'll try to raise it to $3,500 again...or higher. What is the max amount or percentage she can raise it per year? It's not rent stabilized (obviously) and I'm in Williamsburg.
I just realized my voter registration has my name spelled wrong (it’s missing one letter). Is it too late to do anything? Can I still vote? Will it get counted? Stressed!
EDIT: figured it out, thanks all!!
hi im going to be in nyc in December and am wondering what the best clothing stores that contain either archived runway pieces or stores that contain true vintage pieces? if you have any suggestions please let me know. thank you for reading 🦭
Any jazz clubs? Nice libraries? Calm nooks to relax in..? Random parks? Museums? What am I missing? Unique bars? Really cheap eats?
My family & I recently moved to NYC. Our older children don’t go to the local schools. We’re wondering how to meet local families & neighbors? Our former city had street and neighborhood WhatsApp groups as well as several neighborhood street get togethers per year. Also, our children went to the local elementary school which of course made it super easy to meet people in the community.
I’m looking online and most meetups and gatherings seem to be for younger people in their 20s & early 30s. Am I that old? 😆 But maybe I’m not looking correctly! Anyone have any ideas?
🙏🏻
Hi! I was accepted to the new holiday market at Herald Square, and I am looking for advice from fellow current/former vendors who have worked at Bryant Park or Union Square. I have a cookie company, and I sell my heart-shaped shortbread as 3-packs, bags of nibbles (little two bite cookies), and in pre-packed dozen-cookie gift boxes. In addition to my classic collection gift box, I'm doing a special NYC-themed gift box to appeal to the many tourists I know will visit Herald Square.
My biggest concern at the moment is volume and how to estimate the number of cookies I will need. I'm also considering raising my prices so as to offset demand slightly. And, finally, at all of the other festivals/fairs/markets I've done, I have offered samples. Do you think this is necessary in a market that has such high foot traffic? (Frankly, I'm not sure I'll have time to make the samples!!)
If anyone has relevant experience from past markets, I would be so grateful for your advice. Thanks in advance!
Hey NYers! Was wondering if anyone could help me with something/has experience with a similar situation so please share below!
My neighbor has an unregistered commercial vehicle (Mercedes Sprinter Van) that he uses for work (construction/renovation). He parks his van overnight, every night, on a residential street. Not only that, he uses his personal car to save himself a spot for his work car. So every morning and evening, he swaps the two. His personal car is in the exact same spot during the day, and his work van is in the exact same spot every night.
Obviously parking in NYC is scarce as it is, and this just doesn’t seem right or fair. He has basically claimed this specific spot, on a public residential street, as his own.
There isn’t a way to specify this type of situation in a 311 complaint which is why I’ve come to Reddit. Is what he’s doing illegal or just a-hole behavior?
Thanks one and all!
Looking to buy the best apple cider jam/preserves to enjoy with my toast!
Hi! Please be nice as I’ve never visited NYC. I am from Miami.
I will be visiting manhattan for a few days next month. Do I need to rent a car? I will be flying into LGA. If not, what’s the best way to do transit? Is there some kind of card I need to pay for to be able to access the subway? Not sure, public transport really isn’t a big thing where I live.
Thanks!!🩷
Where can i work on my laptop for free or very cheap in the evenings?
Library closes at 8/10pm depending where you are. I'm in Brooklyn.
I gotta find spots where I can buy tea for $2 or even for free...
I'll be coming in from Canada with my dad, arriving on the 5th. We're staying at the Hilton in Midtown Manhattan. We have some wide open space in the itinerary and were looking to fill it along with wanting some reccs about election day. Here's our current itinerary along with some detail.
5th - Arrival and checking in probably about 3:30 or 4. Want to keep this day mostly open because the flight might take some energy out of us. We'll have dinner at restaurant row, just sorta play that by ear. Main question on this day is where to go to sorta experience what an American election's like. Where are the demonstrations/potential protests going to be? We're very politically active and on the left side of things, but are/present as white dudes.
6th- This one's pretty well booked solid. My dad wants to pick up something at an auction house. We have a show at the Shed at 1PM, and dinner reservations at the Minetta Tavern at 5:30PM. After that it's freedom but that's still a fair amount and will likely take us into the evening. Happy to hear evening recommendations in that area though!
7th- This is the big free day. We have a show at the Barrymore at 7PM but the whole day is open till then and we have no dinner plans at all. Might have breakfast at the Waffles n' Dings in Bryant Park though.
8th- We have dinner planned at Rosa Mexicano at 5:30PM and a show at 7:30PM at the Lincoln. Outside of that, no plans.
9th- Return flight.
In terms of who the two of us are and what might interest us; we're both culture people. My dad's 71 and big on history and such, so we do plan to slide a MOMA visit in here somewhere. He also owns a bookstore and is big into that side of stuff. I, his kid, am a 31 year old game developer. That should give you enough of an idea but put simply I'm a massive dork, but I like to think a cultured one. I can sorta go for anything but I'd be lying if I said some of the more genuine article japanese and chinese import stores didn't call to me. I also really like bugs, so if there's cool bug stuff around I'd love to know.
If I've left out anything important I'll edit things in as they're pointed out. I remember there being an FAQ for how to do a post like this but I can't find it, so I'm just doing what I can.
Any alternative that has similar to their croissant?
I'll be staying at the Edge Hotel for a couple of nights and am wondering if there's any issues walking to a couple of restaurants located on Broadway in the evening. We've always stayed in the Times Square area and haven't really ventured this far north. Appreciate your responses.
I have no sense of direction and am an idiot. Yes, downvote me, yell at me, it’s pathetic and makes no sense. I do not think logically and apparently I can’t even walk a few feet without getting lost.
Yes, I am pathetic. I took the train into NYC to eat at Lombardis on Spring St. My original plan was to eat at Lombardi’s, Prince St. Pizza, and Upside.
I took the #6 subway from Grand Central to Spring St. station and walked up the exit stairs on the right.
My phone’s directions told me it was a 5 minute straight walk. So I walked out the subway exit door onto the street, turned right, and kept walking straight. Balthazar was on my left and I remember seeing Diesel store. But the arrival time kept increasing and I could never find Lombardi’s.
I finally gave up and just took an Uber (picked me up at 80 Spring St.) back to Grand Central and went home.
What did I do wrong?
My girlfriend's been extra stressed with work recently, so with her birthday coming up, I want to treat her to a spa day.
What spas in the city would y'all recommend? Given the occassion, I'm definitely planning to splurge a bit price-wise.
