Daily Freeman (Non) delivery

One year ago i decided to do my part supporting local news by subscribing to the Daily Freeman digital edition with a once-a-week delivery of the Sunday newspaper

Sunday paper never showed up.... ever. I have spent the last year attempting to figure out why the paper never showed up. Multiple attempts were made to contact anyone and everyone in the customer support and circulation departments, and I was always given the same answer, sometimes by the same people repeatedly, and sometimes by new people.... "we will let our delivery contractor know, they will fix it, give it some time". Over and over and over again.

Finally, last week, after sending a series of .... i'm sorry to say.... increasingly rude and ridiculous messages, i finally get a message back from somebody in the circulation department for the Lowell Sun (another paper in MA owned by the same media group - who i guess must be the circulation-boss that handles all their papers?).

She basically said, "we don't have any delivery contractor to deliver the papers, and we can't send the Sunday paper through the mail. So there is literally no way for you to get the paper"

The icing on the cake, after pressing her on it, is that she said that they haven't been able to do it since BEFORE i even subscribed the paper, over a year ago... and probably much longer than that. And... even if i subscribe to the 7-days a week paper delivery, they still won't deliver the Sunday paper even though they'll charge me for it. So both print subscription options available, as advertised, don't actually exist, and haven't existed in at least a year or longer.

But I guess the other 5 people in their circulation department i have spoken to over the last 11 months were unaware of this?! And on top of that, you can STILL go on their website and subscribe to the Sunday paper delivery and be charged for it.

I spent a year feeling like i was screaming into the void, and now I feel like either... this lady is lying to me because she wants me to go away, or they are some ridiculous combination of incompetent and ignorant. They are simultaneously aware there is both a problem and aware they haven't done anything about it... in over a year, while not changing their subscription information..... and that their entire customer service dept and circulation department except for this one woman is unaware of that.

Has anyone else experienced this or had success in dealing with this? I really just want the damn Sunday paper delivered.

Monthly "I'm Moving to the Hudson Valley" Thread

To reduce the number of "I'm moving to the Hudson Valley, can anyone tell me about X?" posts, we are starting a monthly megathread. All questions asking about moving to the Hudson Valley should be kept within the monthly thread. Posts outside of the thread will be removed.

Here are a few existing threads that I found using this search:

Locals, if you want to help make this megathread a success, you can do a few things:

  • Come in here and comment! The threads will only stick if they actually prove useful
  • Report standalone "moving to the HV" posts

What is a good resource for finding Kid Friendly events in the Hudson Valley?

I have tried using FB Events but it shows me a lot of happenings in the city or things I am not interested in. I am always looking for things to do with my 6yo on the weekends. Thanks everyone!

Dog training & dog sports

What dog training clubs and classes in the region are best? Proximity to Dutchess County would be great but willing to travel. We have a dog we would like to do dog sports with and would love to meet people to train with.

I really like Ready Coffee in POK, Hyde Park and Wappingers

Even in the winter I really enjoy the frozen coffee. Ingredients are pure (coffee, dairy and tiny bit of sugar). But stop sticking that dang iPad in my face and asking for a tip at the drive thru. No, I am NOT tipping you for serving me a $4.50 slurpee through the drive thru window. So annoying.

Location/hotel recs

Hello everyone! This year as a birthday/Mother's Day present to myself, I want to take a solo trip somewhere upstate. I live on Long Island, kinda smack dab in the middle, and I'd like to travel no more than 3 hours. I pretty much plan on just decompressing and relaxing. I've driven through New Paltz on the way to Accord a few times and have always thought it was so cute. I believe Beacon is similar? I want to be able to walk to shops and restaurants from my hotel, with some parks or trails nearby. As much as I'd love to truly pamper myself and stay at some of the luxury hotel and spas that have popped up in my search, I'm hoping to not spend over $200 a night. Thank you all!

Has anyone born in NY changed their name in another state? Did you have to register the name change in NY to get updated birth certificate? And other DMV questions.

I was born in NY, and I changed my name in another state many years ago. I'm trying to get an updated birth certificate with my current name on it, so I can get an enhanced license (Currently still have an out of state license). NY seems to use a 3rd party (as a middle man) now to get these certificates.

My certificate order was 'flagged' by the 3rd party (because names didn't match) and I had to call them to clear it up.

They asked if I registered the name change in NY after I changed it. I didn't really know what that meant, I was not told about registering the name change in the state I was born, when I changed my name. I was told to update my social security (did that), then drivers license (did that), and if I wanted to, the birth certificate. And of course I changed my name on everything else at the time, bank, bills, taxes, everything.

I don't see anything anywhere online about registering a name change here if I did it in another state. I've registered cars here in NY under my new name, worked under the new name in NY, filed state taxes with the new name.

Bonus question: To get a NY enhanced drivers license, does the birth certificate have to be in the current name, or will I be able to use my original birth certificate, along with my name change document? Person at the DMV last week said it has to have the current name. I emailed the DMV after that, and they said certificate with original name along with name change form is fine.

If anyone has any experience with that, would like to hear your experience. I was charged for the certificate, but 3rd party said I might get a 'no records found' letter from NY. I'm not sure how long it is going to take to find out (Delivery estimate is August). I can get one of my original name birth certificates if the DMV can use that.

I guess the enhanced license will be required to enter federal buildings and get on airplanes in May, so I would like to sort it out before then, in case there is some sort of emergency I have to deal with.

Fun things for couples to do?

Looking for something fun to do with my fiancé for Valentine’s Day weekend. We were thinking about possibly going to medieval times in lyndhurst nj but I’m looking for other ideas. I’ve tried to look on Facebook for some events but I don’t really see much going on. We’re willing to travel about an hour/hour and a half, we’re near New Windsor NY in Orange County, so anything fun that you’ve done I’m open to all suggestions :)

Junk shops?

Hey, im an artist and im looking for somewhere i can find like interesting objects/antiques? Not like an expensive antique store, maybe more of a thrift/trinket vibe. I'm from the south and we have these kind of junky random stores all over the place so if anyone else has been to those kind of places you'll know what im looking for lol. There's next to nothing for this type of thing in the city except for mother of junk in Brooklyn, so im looking for some good day trip treasure hunts! Thanks!

Farmer Recommendations

Hey Everyone,

My wife and I are looking to buy some beef directly from a farmer in the Hudson Valley, specifically one who focuses on grass-fed and grass-finished beef. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Where to try out strollers in the HV?

I’m having trouble finding stores near Beacon where I can test out strollers from well-known brands. It looks like the closest options are in New Jersey or central Connecticut. If anyone has suggestions or tips, I’d really appreciate it!"

The Hudson Valley Power Authority Act

Haven't seen anyone post about the proposed legislation to remove Central Hudson in favor of a community and democratically driven public company.

The goal? To turn the smallest of the state’s major utilities — and its most unpopular, according to one survey — into a democratically controlled force for greening the state’s economy. The legislation, sponsored by Assemblymember Sarahana Shrestha and Senator Michelle Hinchey, seeks to rein in rate hikes, capping bills at six percent of customers’ incomes. And, according to a draft reviewed by New York Focus, it aims to promote a just transition for workers, not least by ensuring that current, unionized Central Hudson workers retain their rights if the new authority takes over.

You can read more about it here: http://hudsonvalleypowerauthority.com/

And add your name to support it here.

Best place to buy doors in Ulster County?

Hi - I'm looking to replace all the doors in my house. Kids are finally grown up enough where I know they're not going to keep breaking/painting them. Was pricing stuff out with a contractor and then also looked into pricing from Home Depot in Kingston.

Torn on doing this myself or hiring a contractor.
