photography connection at antique warehouse

Trying to find the photographer who approached me around 4pm today about a print of a red statuette of Mao Zedong I was taking a photo of at the antique Hudson Warehouse. You showed me your photos on your phone. I'm introverted & struggle processing speech and I couldn't understand what you were saying very well at the time. You showed me a b&w photo of what looked to be folded cloth in a round, gold ornate frame with putti in it. I was too shy to ask for your info before my dad butted in.

Nicest NYE event in HV

There's always a bunch of NYE events in the area, but if you've been to one or heard about one, what's some of the nicer ones? Cost less important, it'll be a dual NYE/40th bday event.

Preferably one with some nice nosh and an open bar.

Where to take Road test coming from NYC?

I live in NYC and would like to take a test somewhere easy and away from traffic, and soon because here it takes a minimum of 4-6 weeks here to schedule an appointment. Please suggest where to go?

I prefer something on the Hudson metro line so I can get there on the train. TIA!

What happened to Sinterklaas?

I'm curious if anyone knows why Sinterklaas is cancelled and if there are plans to bring it back in the future. More info- Sinterklaas was a very fun event at the beginning of December in Rhinebeck- tons of different performances all around town for a day and ended with a beautiful parade of giant luminous puppets.

Monthly "I'm Moving to the Hudson Valley" Thread

To reduce the number of "I'm moving to the Hudson Valley, can anyone tell me about X?" posts, we are starting a monthly megathread. All questions asking about moving to the Hudson Valley should be kept within the monthly thread. Posts outside of the thread will be removed.

Here are a few existing threads that I found using this search:

Locals, if you want to help make this megathread a success, you can do a few things:

  • Come in here and comment! The threads will only stick if they actually prove useful
  • Report standalone "moving to the HV" posts

LGBT+ Friendly Barber in/around Orange County

Hello all, I am looking for a LGBT+ friendly barber shop in Orange County, NY or neighboring counties. I have never been to a barber and am nervous. I am nonbinairy, but often read as a woman. I am looking for a kind barber who is communicative and knows how to work with caucasian curly hair. I'd like a haircut similar to the one pictured. Does anyone have reccomendations?

Long leash dog walking near Kingston

Hello! I live in Kingston and like to take my dog on walks where she is on a long lead (30 ft) and can wander around freely. I am looking for suggestions on locations - open fields without other dogs or people around where she can wander around without bothering anyone. Am willing to travel around 30 minutes. Nice scenery is a plus.

Thanks in advance!

Edit: to be clear, I comply with municipal leash laws. Many places do not have a leash length requirement so I am looking for recommendations in those areas. And if other dogs/people are around, I shorten the lead to avoid unwanted contact with others. This is why open fields are great, so we can see others from far away. Thank you!

What's your favorite holiday event or display in the valley?

Now that Thanksgiving is over and the Christmas trees and wreaths start going up everywhere I want to know what your favorite Hudson Valley holiday event or display is. Sinterklaas is canceled again this year in Rhinebeck but that would have been near the top of my list. I always love seeing Eggbert and driving through ERDAJT. But what are you looking forward to most? Could be a tree lighting, holiday market, an art show, a party, a performance, anything really.

And I'm interested in all faiths/traditions. I'm not religious but enjoy the imagery and atmosphere of the holidays.

Local organization for leftist politics?

After the election, I realized that the democrats will truly do anything they can to cede power to Republicans.

I'm not voting for this party ever again. I'm not doing it. I think what we need is to build up an actual left wing party. We have four years to accomplish this.

I don't see any sort of redemption for the democratic party. I believe that it's a conservative party that will do nothing but protect the status quo that harms all of us.

I'm asking, what are ways that like minded people in the Hudson valley come together and come up with a plan?

I'm tired of complaining every four years about the lesser of two evils. I want to do something. I want to organize and accomplish things.

Are there any groups in the HV that you recommend?

Please don't argue with me if you support the democratic party. I'm not interested in discourse, just want to know if there are groups of like-minded progressives that want to make the community and the country a better place

Nursing homes in the HV

Hey all,

It's getting to the point with my mother's dementia where our family is in need of applying to nursing homes. I've done the legwork to get her onto Medicaid and have submitted a few applications (Ferncliff in Rhinebeck, Lutheran Care in Pok, and Tenbroek in Lake Katrine). I've been looking at The Grand in Pawling as well. I'm curious if anyone here has good or bad opinions of nursing homes that take Medicaid in the Hudson Valley. Any/all criticisms welcome!

EDIT: I appreciate everyone's input regarding our local nursing homes. Trying to make the most educated decision going into this and do understand that the 1 on 1 care my mother is currently receiving by me is not the reality in a nursing home. I mainly just want to make sure that when my mother is placed, that it only happens one time, because I feel like she's likely to experience a huge cognitive decline whenever the move happens. I am very much planning to be a regular visitor and will do my best to become friendly with the staff. I do have a sister who is an ABSOLUTE Karen however, and I'm sure she will create scenes however regular she ends up visiting. I'm looking at this as it being that much more essential that I build some type of friendships with the NH staff. Any additional tactics I can use to counteract my sister are also greatly appreciated!

Gotta love the Black Friday Woodbury Commons traffic and GPS reroutes!

My wife and I were coming back from hiking and noticed herds of cars following the same bizarre route. We then remembered its Black Friday. It was also directing them onto Arden Valley Road, a very windy remote road in Harriman State Park.

Village of Saugerties is at it again.

Please try to honor the two hours. Shop, eat, wander, and make room for someone else. (No charge at the meters, in case I the point wasn’t clear)

Bike lockers in Hudson or Rensselaer?

Hello, does anyone familiar with either Hudson or Rensselaer know if there are secure bike storage options offered in either city, preferably at or close to the Amtrak stations? I don't mean a bike rack, but rather a secure locker or similar enclosed/locked area where the bike could be left for a few days.

Those that ate out yesterday, where did you go and how was it?

If you went out to eat yesterday where did you eat and how was it? I'm interested in hearing what placed were even open and what the spread was like. If you got a fully cooked meal for take out yesterday I'd be interested to hear the good, bad, and ugly about that experience too!

Accommodations in Amenia?

My husband needs to spend a week in Amenia for training, but our car can not make the hour+ trip everyday. I'm trying to find a motel or reasonably priced air BnB, but I'm not finding much. Does anyone know if the Willows Motel is still open, or anywhere else for a guy to stay without breaking the bank?

Best cell service in Hudson / Rhinebeck?

I am sure this has been a topic before but I can't find it. Anyone have an opinion about the best cell service in the areas around Hudson & Rhinebeck, particularly east of the towns? I have T-Mobile and it seems to be really spotty...

Best Christmas trees..

Located near Red Hook/Rhinebeck… I know a lot of people travel far and wide for Battenfelds but I have to say I was extremely disappointed in their offerings last year. With that said, I am even open to pre-cut trees as long as they are not already wrapped up (because I don’t understand how/why people would buy a tree they can’t fully see???). At LEAST 8 ft.

What about the Hudson Valley are you thankful for?

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Even if you don't celebrate I hope you have the day off! What about the Hudson Valley are you thankful for? Your favorite restaurant? The local lore? The cute little towns everywhere? Some locally made product that's changed your life?

I'm thankful for the access to green spaces and hiking trails. The Hudson Valley legitimately has one of the best developed hiking trail systems with some of the best scenery in the world. There's countless town, city, and state parks to explore everywhere and enjoy all sorts of activities.

So what about you?
