Been thinking about this the last few days as a thought experiment. Would probably have to be a loop, would have to include a landmark or two, but I imagine it would involve going ove the GW into the Palisades and toward Bear Mountain and maybe doing a loop up there. I can’t imagine they actually planned this out for the proposal but interested in what a pro circuit would look like (and yes I thought of the Grand Fondo route.).
Me and my friend were riding on grand ave and car cut us off using the right shoulder in a single lane street. eventually chased us for two streets and started chasing my friend on foot.
Hi I'm a beginner cyclist and runner trying to start a new business around athletes and looking to have a quick chat with coaches/trainers of cycling or running teams around the city, if you are one of them or know someone, let me know! I would like to steal a couple of minutes of your time for a quick chat about my business as I'm conducting market research. Thanks!
Impound lot in Brooklyn.
Has a zip tie which feels like someone put that there to identify.
I just wanted to ask those year-round cycle commuters. What are you all wearing on your work commute in the winter? Do you all have a specific bike fit and change once you get to the office?
Problems I've noticed: If I wear too many layers or just a single puffer with a commuter bag on my back, I sweat like crazy (bridge climb) and mess up my nice shirts.
My goal is not to change once I get into the office, but I will if that's the only solution. I just wanted to hear what other seasoned commuters are doing in the winter.
I ride a wide handlebar 29er hardtail mountain bike (converted to city use - thinner tires) and often do 15-20 mile endurance runs. The wide stance of the handlebars (720mm) plus the ergo wrist bars, cardio, and cellular metabolic burn has healed me!
I also have a dropbar road bike but have not experienced the same healing because the bars are too narrow.
Hallelujah dudes & dudettes! They say biking is the fountain of youth 🫶🤝🙌👍
Fairly new to cycling and got a road bike recently (which I know isn’t always ideal for bikepacking) & i am looking for 1-2 day bikepacking trips to plan from nyc for this spring.
if anyone has any suggestions that would be doable on a road bike, please let me know. so far i’ve found Ward Pound Ridge in westchester.
eventually i hope to sell my road bike and get a gravel but for now i have to work w what i have
Cycling last night on 37th street, between 1st and 2nd, a black car left the tunnel entrance lane but then decided to turn left into the tunnel exit lane. Driver checked on me briefly but left the scene before I could collect myself to get a number plate or any details. Nobody stopped so I have no witnesses. My head-cam didn't capture the plate unfortunately
Anyone recognize the car's logo or the number on the back window (5222)?
Happy Thanksgiving!
This ride was from last year. https://www.strava.com/activities/10248221145. Created the route using https://RouteDoodle.com.
I was heading down 9th Avenue tonight. And it was a strange pre-Thanksgiving day. Being that the city was way extra crowded than any other year I've ever seen. So within that, I as taking it easy today, I also just was fatigued as well lol.
But there was this dude ahead of me. He looked like he was bumping music, either in headphones or earphones. And he was just about to past this bar on 49th street. So I'm pretty sure you are familiar with how annoying that crowd can be, when you're trying to bike past that. Which is why sometimes I like to stay away from the curb.
So I can't really say of it was the bikers fault or the girls, because it all happened so fast. I mean so fast, by the time I got past them the bf pushed the dude or his bike to the ground. And then next thing they was throwing blows lol. I didn't have time to be on no spectator shit, so I just swerved and went on with my day.
Honestly with just how hectic and fast pace everything be in the city. I'm so surprised I don't see that happen on the daily basis. Because I cent even tell you the last time, I even see a collision. Besides the ones I hear ever so often in this subreddit. But hopefully the lady was okay, and those two bros hashed it out and went on with their days as well.
Stolen Bike, please Dm if you have any info, see bike, or find posts regarding bike, will reward you graciously. Password locked bike room in my apartment building was broken into and locks cut, stolen with 3 or potentially more bikes.
Not sure if this helps but maybe it will lead to recovering it. I saw a man stash a Urtopia bike behind a bin along with a broken lock and bolt cutters on Tuesday night in Grand Station.
Hi everyone,
I was selected for grand jury duty for the rest of the year and want to lock up my bike near the court - 320 Jay Street Criminal Court. It is a Diamondback Union 1 eBike so it is a nice bike. I will use my Kryptonite Fagattaboutit as well as two steel cable locks for both the seat and the wheels. I will take the accessories off. Is there a decently safe place to lock this up or do you guys think it is not safe enough?
Not that I want my bike stolen, but I do also have a Velosurance plan covering the bike.
My bike has been locked to a DOT street sign pole for months. I use it nearly everyday. The pole is in front of a Columbia University owned parking garage. The sidewalk is triple wide, and there's also a mailbox right next to the bike, so it's not obstructing the sidewalk in anyway. The pole is just over the boundary between my building and the parking garage, but it's a public sidewalk anyway.
A facilities guy approached me when I was unlocking my bike and asked that I move it to another pole because they don't want bikes in front of their buildings. He said they don't let students lock bikes there, so he can't let me. He said it's a request from his boss so I asked if I could have the boss's number and he got pissed and walked away telling me if it's not gone today he's going to cut it. I have an ABUS CityChain 1010 ($150) and a Litelok X3 ($300), so it won't be easy to cut, but also I don't want to be out $500 in locks if they do.
What are my options here? What's the best way forward? Can't really tell if it's legal to lock a bike to a DOT pole, but also can't tell if it's legal for them to cut themselves...
My son and I have been harassed and intimidated by this same guy a bunch of times over the past couple years. He's apparently angry that we ride bikes through the park to school in the morning and gets aggressive when he sees us.
He has intentionally run into our bikes, screamed at us to get out of the park, called us "gentrifiers", told us to "take the bus", refused to let us pass, followed and stalked us, and brought my son to tears. Today he told us "I'll f*ck you up" as we passed him on West Drive near 93rd Street.
I've gone to the NYPD Central Park Precinct in the past and filed police reports for harassment, but they told me they can't do much unless they know his identity or unless he assaults us. This is the first time he's explicitly threatened to harm us. It's scary and particularly upsetting (and confusing) for my son who feels anxious whenever we're in a part of the park where we've encountered this guy.
I have photos of him from previous incidents, which I've shared with police, but they didn't include them in the reports, and, frankly, didn't seem to care. I'm tempted to post them here, but that feels like a violation of Reddit terms and potentially too provocative if he were to see them. I just want this guy to leave us alone, but not sure what to do. I don't want to wait to see if he becomes violent.
Any advice?
Learned that other than building lanes, London uses the concept of "Cycle Quietways" which utilize less-traffic streets, dead ends, and other features to create a network for cyclists. Minimal infrastructure but only physical signs and paints are needed; maybe some barriers for closing certain sections to motor traffic.
I've lived in London and honestly it's a genius idea. Lots of winding, narrow streets and roads are a pain to drive through but perfect to bike on. I wonder how feasible it is to design a network in NYC?
Even more progressive is the idea of "Low Traffic Neighborhood" where certain parts of a residential area are closed to outside traffic except public transit and emergency vehicles. Although this one is controversial, recent survey in London shows support from the residents. I am not positive that the administration is capable of pushing this kind of radical plan but theoretically can it make sense in certain neighborhoods?
Does anyone have a bike trailer they're looking to sell? Or potentially a cargo bike they could lend me. I need to haul a bunch of stuff tomorrow afternoon and hoping to do it via bike rather than getting ubers. Thanks!
I ride a lot and I see bike riders using crosswalk to cross the street next to pedestrians all the time. Is that allowed? Seems like it could cause accidents.
Some of you may have seen posts about this monthly meeting in the past -- there is an active group organized out of r/MicromobilityNYC and r/AstoriaStreetActivism that has had some success engaging with the precinct for safer streets. Among other things they have been successful at getting the precinct to tow the cars that were illegally parked by the Queensbridge greenway.
This will be the first community council meeting after cyclist Amanda Servedio was killed by a suspect fleeing the police during a high-speed police chase last month.
