New England, everywhere I look,
old letters crumble from the Book,
China trade rubble, one more line
unraveling from the dark design
spun by God and Cotton Mather—
our bel età dell' oro, another
bright thing thinner than a cobweb,
caught in Calvinism's ebb.

(Tried posting in Maine forum but was removed, probably because I just joined Reddit. So, trying here instead.)
Hi, everyone. I got a remote job that requires me to be in the Northeast, and one of the states I'm considering moving to is Maine.
I recently visited a bunch of places in Maine (York, Ogunquit, Wells, Kennebunkport/Kennebunk, Portland, Yarmouth, Freeport, Wiscasset)...and while I quite liked most of these places, the one I really fell in love with was Ogunquit.
The thing is...I'm a single guy in my 30s. While I'm not big on nightlife to begin with, I do want to make friends my own age and have opportunities to get involved in the community. Working remotely will be a big change for me, and I'm an extravert. I want something to anchor me to the community, something that will provide structure and face-to-face interaction on a regular basis.
If I do take the plunge and try Ogunquit out, how would you suggest I do so? Like, if the Ogunquit Playhouse was year-round, I'd love to volunteer and help on the set, etc. But it's not. Or if there was a school in Ogunquit, I could volunteer or teach an after-school class. But there's not...
I know I could drive 15 minutes to York or Wells for things like that, but are there any opportunities in Ogunquit I might not know about?
Thanks for any advice!
Im looking for nice towns in Maine to have q cozy winter getaway, u just had surgery so u cant ski or do most of the outdoor winter activities fun stuff, so looking for a town that has shops or other things to do, where i could probably find a place or hotel to rent with hot tubs and such, I am from MA, so NH ideas are welcome too.
ISO of an organization that accepts shipping for new-like new warm clothing donations for woman and some children clothes. Also willing to drive anywhere in the New England Area!
Not from NE originally. We have forced water or whatever baseboard heaters. Replaced all the pex piping with copper and it still KLINGCLANGWHAAAAAPSHHHHH EVERY TIME it comes on. We literally just turn the heat off at night because we cannot sleep through the noise. What are we doing wrong.
January has been brutal so I am seeking recommendations to perk us up a bit. I would like to know if we can find anywhere within two hours of Providence that has tacos al pastor on the actual trompo (the spit). Preferably a busy place as sometimes the trompo gets really sad looking if it isn't seeing much action. The only place I've found this before was somewhere in Brooklyn but was hoping for some places closer than that.
Also, I just recently learned that RI's food regulations prohibited pork on a spit. I'd always wondered why we couldn't find tacos al pastor (as one would expect them) here.
I moved from Fall River, MA to Providence,RI. Providence is wonderful but the state of RI as a whole fucking sucks. Driving here is the worst, the unemployment is the worst in New England (Good luck getting a good job in RI) and our bridge situation is so Batshit ridiculous that I miss Fall River everyday. I used to join in on the CT hate, but I've visited some small towns in CT and enjoyed some spots in their wine valley and I realized I hated on CT too much. Lots of Rhode Island is out of reach because people from all over use it as a place for their huge summer homes. Rhode Island is beautiful in spots and I love being near the ocean, but that's the only draw. Fuck you, Rhode Island
Edit: I'd rather live here in R.I or any New England State than most other parts of the country
Edit 2: I still love RI, but it has largely avoided the shit talking and I think it deserves some
It’s been since before Covid since I’ve seen back to back snow storms and at least 12” on the ground without it melting hours that day later. Are winters over here in Massachusetts? Climate Change, jet streams, global warming, etc… whatever you wanna call it it seems like winters are no longer. Winter use to be my favorite season. I love snowboarding, snow blowing, winter hikes etc. Now we just get rain on warm days and cold on days without snow. Lived here since 1987 and never seen anything like it. Am I the only one? I feel like winters are the past. This is like getting rain all summer for people who enjoy summers
This house appeared in my Zillow feed and it looked familiar. It hit me that it might be the house Nathan Carman bought in rural VT and just kept adding onto...and adding onto...(Interestingly, no stairs leading up to the 3rd and 4th floors.)

I confirmed the address. The house was on the market before and never sold. There's been an influx of people outside New England moving into VT since the pandemic, though, and may not know who Nathan Carman was.
Found this great video on why we are better than everyone else lol. What do you think!
I know its probably subject to a lot of different opinions, but I am doing a brewery roadtrip around new england In August, and id like to find some good hard cider while im at it..so i thought id see what places you guys liked. ..it doesn't matter where, as I havent planned my route yet..but preferably a place i can visit that does cider exclusively, and not as a side project like some breweries do.
I recently found video of when I was 7 , 10 years ago singing this and was really shocked. I do remember hearing others sing this version of the happy Birthday song at the time. I posted it here because the only other post regarding this I could find was from NY and this video comes from when I lived in Philly.
I’m a fellow Canadian up north, who likes to listen to a lot of American folk music. However, 54% of them are songs about the south and the rest are Civil War era music, and bit of American Revolutionary war and war of 1812.
I would like to hear some old folk songs about New England, so I’m open to suggestions.
When my husband and I were dating in Texas I remember he told me about lobster sauce. He said he had never found it in San Antonio and how good it was.
Fast forward to this week, we decided to go to our local MA Chinese and play our numbers and have dinner. Lo and behold, he saw the lobster sauce and ordered it.
When it came out I was shocked to see a brown sauce with ground pork. No lobster! I was expecting a silky, light-colored sauce with chunks of lobster.
I didn’t really enjoy the taste of it but he loved it and ate the leftovers the next day.
What gives, New England?
We’ve also been looking for a place with chop suey sandwiches. Are they hyperlocal? We’re near Milford.
Hello folks,
I'm a freelance writer working on a project compiling New England folktales - my entry is the Hidebehind.
I was wondering if anyone here would be kind enough to share an account of this folktale? Did you have a relative who talked about it, was it a prominant story growing up?
Many thanks in advance!
Where did they come from? Information on their page is giving red flags for a cult, in my opinion. I have a friend who is involved and she's leaving a hard-earned career to involve herself more in this group,
