For discussion about the Upstate region of New York State.
Anything related to the whole of the state besides New York City and Long Island. Albany, Saratoga Springs, Buffalo, Glens Falls, Troy, Rochester, Binghamton, Plattsburgh, etc.
Essentially anything in NY state except the NYC area (which has its own subreddit). Technically there's western New York, central New York, the North Country, etc., but see this discussion on why this subreddit is for anything non-NYC and long island.

This Saturday come out and laugh!
Recently I've been getting ads for those Shen Yun plays financed by the Falun Gong, who have a big compound in upstate New York. And I saw that recent thread on hear about the yellow deli.

I'm always curious to hear about these places, because when I was younger I used to drive all around New York for glass installation. Sometimes I would get jobs working on these beautiful buildings and compounds in the middle of nowhere, and sometimes going down backroads I would see odd buildings. Massive structures with barbed wire fences that honestly looked like some sort of camp, or weird eastern looking temples. Later I tried to find these places on google maps and me ever had any luck.
And in the 19th Century New York had a “Psychic Highway” called the Crucible of Ferment across a narrow band of New York State from south of Buffalo to Albany. This region was the crucible for an active ferment that had its origin in the social, religious, and economic activity in the State. The haunting question is "why here?" Seven new religions, sects, and utopian communities were established along this narrow band of New York State, including Mormonism and Spiritualism.

Also interesting is the “Burned Over District”. The term refers to the western and parts of the central regions of New York State in the early 19th century, where religious revivals and the formation of new religious movements of the Second Great Awakening took place, to such a great extent that spiritual fervor seemed to set the area on fire. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burned-over_district
I just find this subject very fascinating.
Hey all, I’ll be traveling from Syracuse to Erie, PA today. Would I be better off taking i-90 the whole way or would i be better off taking i-90 to Rochester and then go south to 86?
I am considering doing a weekend trip from NYC to Port Jervis with a friend next summer. Neither of us owns a car and we would much rather go there on the train rather than renting a car. We are interested in taking an Uber from the Erie Hotel to a hiking area and then hiking/walking back to town. I can't find any reliable info to confirm that Uber is actually reliable in that area. Has anyone tried to take an Uber/Lyft in Port Jervis?
Best place to be in the winter
Being from Upstate Ny and then moving throughout the country and then throughout Europe and now back to Upstate NY (western ny) I'm always shocked at how little people are "proud" or "thankful" to be from here.
You go to other really poor run down places in America and they still have pride in where they are from but everyone here always talks about how they only want to leave.
I personally after living throughout America and Europe still find it a great place to live with our nature, interesting mix of cities/suburbs, great places to be a tourist etc. I can't imagine moving anywhere else at this point. My wife who is an immigrant absolutely loves it here as well and her extended family who moved here as well as immigrants absolutely love it and are so happy to live here.
Why do you think its like it or am I completely wrong and people are proud of it.
Saturday November 30th at 9:30, and the weather channel is saying you guys will get four feet by Monday morning.
How is it right now? Any photos?
I drove from nyc to Rochester yesterday on thanksgiving.. stopped at the first rest stop , pretty sure it was Sloatsburg.. anyway I went to Starbucks and got a medium iced cappuccino and egg bites. Normally if I stop at any Starbucks I get the same thing it’s usually around $11 IT WAS FREAKIN $17 WTF
The very first serious snow fall in Black River Jefferson county. I love how quiet the world gets during lake effect storms. But I could do without everything else!
Up to $250, but this is a good start to getting people funds that they're owed.
With snow coming, get rid of these clusters of leaves in your shrubs. They support snow and can cause real damage.
Considering abandoning my T-Mobile plan in favor of Google Fi. Would ideally like something along the lines of starlink connectivity but for cell service which I unfortunately cannot afford ATM.
Having access to good cell service and Internet is essential for my work.
Any suggestions are appreciated. TIA!
I currently live in central New York but would like to be closer to Canadian family. I see very affordable homes in towns like Ogdensberg, which is usually where I cross the border, but then hear that they’re very challenging, isolating, even unsafe places to live. I don’t love high rates of public drug use or finding needles on my block. Are there any towns you all recommend?
When people post about moving to NY, I think this image should be set up as an automated reply.
Can anyone explain? This is a very windy cold snowy cloudy evening on a new ish moon phase
so I think safe to say its not the moon, a fire , or borealis?
I have a few days left on my vacation and wanted to do something with my husband but he is physically disabled so it's hard to find things. Anyone have any suggestions? Even if it's just a drive to look at something scenic.
What are the snow totals looking like today?
