For discussion about the Upstate region of New York State.
Anything related to the whole of the state besides New York City and Long Island. Albany, Saratoga Springs, Buffalo, Glens Falls, Troy, Rochester, Binghamton, Plattsburgh, etc.
Essentially anything in NY state except the NYC area (which has its own subreddit). Technically there's western New York, central New York, the North Country, etc., but see this discussion on why this subreddit is for anything non-NYC and long island.

Hello, my family (2 adults, 2 young kids) will be around Kingston for Thanksgiving. Wondering if anyone knows of any restaurants or hotels in the area hosting a Thanksgiving dinner? TIA!
Currently in Hudson falls ny. Looking to start a thread for other in the area including myself that are looking to meet new people and find new friendships
I'm moving from Georgia, and looking around Utica for affordable and safe housing. Rome looks quiet, real estate is extremely affordable, and it's only 20 minutes from Utica.
What's the catch? I read there was a tornado this year, is the town just going under?
Getting a little sense of schadenfrude watching the local Sinclair owned news worry about the future of Micron in Syracuse. The little twitch on Brandon Williams face when Mike Johnson said they might kill the CHIPS act is pure gold. This is what you voted for folks, hold on tight lol.
Omar and the scum from Autovations should be in the dictionary under the word dishonest. They sold a teenager a car with a broken frame that they had knowingly under coated over. They then took his money that drained his bank account, and mailed it back to an unknown guy in Puerto Rico. And when called on it, after my son got to drive his car for a total of less than 50 miles before the frame broke, Omar said we can’t do anything about it man the money is gone. Omar is an absolute piece of festering shit. To be clear, I wouldn’t cross the street to piss on him if he was burning in front of me. Please go out of your way to show Omar the same respect that he shows to his customers. That man is garbage.
A teacher (science) and professor (humanities) who love hiking and skiing. We also love soccer and volleyball and could referee both. We have two children in college who will graduate soon. We have no known, specialized health problems. Is Plattsburgh a place to retire?
Hey guys!
I’m moving to Clifton Park here shortly, and wanted any recommendations for restaurants and things to do
Thank you!
Hi everyone! In light of recent events, I have some LGBTQ+ friends in other states interested in NY as an official sanctuary state. They've asked me to send them some resources about moving upstate as the city is too expensive, and I thought a guide for folks might be a productive way to manage my emotions right now. I have the basic cities down, some financial information, some areas to avoid, housing tips, and attractions. With that in mind, what might you include in something like that? And do you know anyone who might be interested in helping out?
Hi everyone. I realize there’s a lot of posts similar to this, but nothing specific to someone like myself.
I am likely going to be moving to Upstate New York come summer and trying to decide whether Troy, Saratoga Springs, or Syracuse is best for me to move to. I realize what I am about to describe might match Buffalo or Rochester, but they are not options. I also did not like Albany or Schenectady.
I will be 29 and not know anyone and work remote. I personally enjoy things like going to the gym, pickleball, movies/TV, board games, travel, history, getting drinks and food, etc. I don’t really like hiking or camping.
What’s most important to me is meeting friends that will be reciprocal. It’s key for me rk be able to assimilate. So…where should I go?
My partner and I are both from the east coast (MD & southern NJ) and we have been living in California & now Reno, NV for the past decade. We were thinking of moving back east to be closer to family now that we are thinking of having a family of our own. My partner has a job opportunity in the western Hudson Valley area and I work remote. I have some family further north Upstate (Syracuse area) but have never spent time in Hudson Valley.
The closeness to NYC appeals to us, we miss being near a major city.
It's much closer to family, drivable distances for trips.
We're used to the seasons now that we've been Reno for a few years.
Things we're concerned about:
- It's hard to understand which towns / cities have a good sense of community
- Would we really rather be on the eastern side of the Hudson River? It's possible my partner will not need to go into an office more than a few time a month.
- School options, we'd prefer alternative types of schools like Montessori
- Accessibility to hiking, nature? We are spoiled right now in Reno.
Thank you in advance for your advice!
Considering the results of the recent elections, I can probably expect to lose Planned Parenthood for trans related matters. New York will likely not change unless forced to, but I'm not familiar with any other doctors who can handle medication and then like. Anyone out there know who I can ask?
Every year my family (18-25 people) go on a family reunion/camping trip. I’m looking to rent a large house or multiple houses next to each other. We would prefer being on a lake or by a nice town to explore. We are a large group of people of different backgrounds so we try to keep the price per person as low as we can since traveling can be quite expensive. Does anyone have any suggestions on affordable lakes, towns or rental companies in upstate NY? We are looking through Airbnb but the prices and quality are all over the place. Any advice on planning a trip in upstate NY for summer 2025 will be greatly appreciated!
New York holds the tools for a clean energy transition that will empower unions, lower costs, and rapidly cut our emissions. Use this tool to write a letter to Governor Hochul demanding that she and NYPA commit to building 15 GW of publicly owned renewables by 2030!
Hello all, I lived in Upstate yeeears ago, and thought it would be fun to take the family for a summer vacation this year. Trying to remember where we used to go and what places were the most fun, but could definitely use some help.
We would likely be looking for something like a lake house or a cabin somewhere near a lake, mountains, etc. Main considerations are:
Availability of rentals. Guessing with AirBNB there are a lot more options these days. When I was young it seemed like everyone just knew someone who owned a lake house.
Swimming/water fun. Are there some lakes that are too cold to swim, even in summer? I remember some Finger Lakes being warmer than others, and the lakes near the Adirondacks are probably pretty cold. We are used to North Carolina beaches, so I know it won't be that warm, but want to make sure the kids can stay in without going numb. Bonus points for kayaking, dock access, etc. The kids I'm sure would love a shore line that they could play in and explore.
Local fun/amenities. Basics like a modern grocery store. We cook more than eating out, but some restaurants and ice cream shops would be nice. Also if there are things like a water park or aquarium that could help. I don't remember there being as much of that like some beach towns, but usually like to break up the days with some different outings.
Close points of interest? I was thinking that if we were further west we might try and spend a day or night going to Niagara Falls since we would close (well, closer than Virginia). Anything else that might be a must-see or something that you would be worth making a side trip for? Museums, landmarks, etc.
Any and all recommendations are greatly appreciated! If I've been too vague about anything, please let me know. We are pretty flexible, but don't want to get everyone stuck in a cabin somewhere for a week going stir crazy! Thanks!
To the mod, thank you for banning unrelated political postings .
Maybe you should also get ahead of the game and prohibit postings now about next year’s NYS Governor’s race as well as the 2027 NYC Mayoral race ( arguably unrelated to upstate anyway. )
Thanks .
How do I find out what towns chickens and such are allowed? Addison, Constable, Corning, Burke, Rome, Elmira, Pine City, Marathon, Walton.
We build retail fixtures in various stores around NY and PA. Paid travel to and from the job site, per diem and hotel provided for overnight travel. Apply below :)
Not sure if we’re far enough north here but I’ve been to Rouses Point, the Adirondacks, Niagara Falls and Erie. NY is a big state with great people!

Sounds like a pretty cool addition to the university.
I am concerned that NYS voted against Trump and sued him and that he will take out his anger on the State so maybe not a good place to move to now.
As the title says, I’m looking to consult with a lawyer around workplace harassment and bullying I’ve witnessed and experienced. Coworkers telling racist, homophobic, misogynistic, antisemitic and more offensive jokes. Other forms of harassment that are just brushed off as messing around.
Wondering if anyone has any recommendations, I’m in the greater Albany area.
Thanks for your time.
Edit: thanks for the help folks, I can take it from here.
Would these be good choices? Would love any extra info on the area!!
I have a young family, a 3 and 1 year old. Wanting a great school district to stay in k-12. Our budget for a house would be 500k absolute max. Are these welcoming areas for new families? What's the general vibe of the area? Lots of playgrounds or places for kids?
We're coming from maga land FL - please tell me it's nothing like that up north. Also is it a fairly religious(Christian or Jewish) area?
I'm a SAHM, and my husband works in IT (Network Engineer) with a security clearance currently, so we definitely have to look at the job market for him a bit more.
Anything I should know? Thanks!! We would obviously visit, but so far from researching, this area looks amazing!
