Probably a dumb question but I really don’t know a lot about the system.
I am taking the FF exam in January, but I had also registered for the EMS trainee this filing period.
If I become an EMT before I get a call for FF would that hinder any sort of process?
Or for sake of the argument become an EMT, work as that for 3-6 months then get a call for FF and switch?
Applied for exam 4044 back in the summer, I just logged into DCAS and it’s not showing up on my dashboard as an exam I applied for. Is this happening to anyone else??
I’m 23 (just turned 23 in October) and I just applied for the ems position but I know I won’t get a call for at least a year (January 2026?) at that point I would be 24 and I know the promo exams come every 4 years and you need 4 years OTJ to be qualified to take it.
I know that you can’t be older than 29 to make FF but I’m not sure if the time window is shutting for me.
I had also registered for the FDNY exam but I’m not a city kid so I know if I’m not scoring a 100 it’s not likely for me to be called
I heard there's sports in the fdny. If so, how do you join? Im not in the fdny but Id like to know if there's sports for anybody in the fdny
FDNY drink free 7-8pm. 250+ women signed up. If you’re single and free def check it out!
Hi, So if this isn't the correct forum to ask I understand.
My mother was called from Michigan to go to NY when hurricane sandy came through, She obtained quite a few different shirts and goodies for different firehouses she was working out of.
She recently passed and I inherited all of those T-shirts and sweat shirts. I'm unsure if I'd be breaking a rule by wearing them, I dont want to make a big scene. I'm in Colorado and I don't want to offend or for anyone to think I'm disrespecting the symbol of what yall stand for.
And I'm sorry if this is a ridiculous question.
If you had the choice for either job? Wait 2 more years on ems for FF or go nassua in a year what would you choose and why?
I am in local 361 as an ironworker. My day normally goes from 7-3pm. I have buddies that work with the FDNY doing idk what and be ironworkers at the same time. How is this possible? Is there a way to be a firefighter on the weekends or overnight where I could be in both occupations?
Who were the 9/11 First Responders from Engine 9 Ladder 6? How are they now?
Much respect to all the First Responders who served on that unfortunate day.
I’ve seen threads in the past on this topic seeing that some do both but for those who do, how do you balance it?
I’ve considering going back to school for nursing while waiting for the next exam process, alongside waiting for Januarys NYPD academy.
But before I jump back into school I’d like to see how well I can balance these jobs down the road
Does anyone know the last time all five rescue companies were on one job altogether?
Tell me this isn't true.
Hey, I’m wondering what type of material FDNY uses in their trading facilities for live fire training. (Wood, Straw plywood OSB, ect)
Thanks
For tier 3 is the retirement 20,22, or 25 years for normal service retirement? I was seeing conflicting answers online. Thank you
During the course of the last year I've inexplicably found myself drawn to the FDNY. Currently 21 years old, Queens resident. Almost done with my bachelor's degree. I've been considering it on and off for a long while now but I'm still unsure. If I were to do so, it would be after I have graduated university with by bachelor's in May 2025.
2 years ago, Mayor Adams signed a bill that would diversity FDNY's racial demographics. In order for Adams' bills to take effect,in about 15 years, FDNY candidates would need to be about 34% Hispanic, 25% Black, 23% White, 18% Asian, and 13% female, according to the Council.
So this bill is limiting how many individuals from a certain race can have the job of a firefighter.
If the 23% mark has been reached for white candidates, then the subsequent white applicants will be turned away simply because of their race.
If the 34% mark has been reached for Hispanic candidates, then the subsequent white applicants will be turned away simply because of their race.
If the 18% mark has been reached for Asian candidates, then the subsequent Asian applicants will be turned away simply because of their race.
Denying people their job opportunities because of their race hmm where did I hear of this before?
Is this the type of racially divided future you all want? Where New Yorkers and Americans' talent and job opportunities are reduced to mere quotas?
Aren't we supposed to strive for a future where no person shall be treated differently or denied any opportunity because of their race, something they have no control over?
Hey, first of all i hope this isnt the most annoying question in here and please forgive my bad english. I am a career firefighter from germany an visit new york on monday.
When i visit one of your fire stations and that is, where we get to the point:
Would you be happy if i take some german stuff (one of my old helmets, patches, shirts) an maybe exchange against some of yours? Even there is no change for trading, i would bring them as a gift if this isnt a strange move!
Thank you for your answers
Hey all, I am currently an 18 y/o male who is living in Texas determined to get on FDNY. I NEED to get out of Texas. I will not be eligible to test for this upcoming exam, so I've decided to start taking steps now for the next one (2028). This summer, I will take an EMT course at a community college down here, and after that, I will go to paramedic school at the same community college. I expect the paramedic program to take 9 months (We'll round to 1 year). By this April I will be 19, and by the time I graduate from the paramedic program, we'll say I'm 20. My plan is to then move to the shittiest apartment I can find in NYC to gain residency and transfer the paramedic/EMT with reciprocity. Here is where I need your help. What is the fastest way on to the dept? Considering by the time the 2028 exam rolls around I will be 22, I'm not sure If they'll give me bonus points for residency since I would've lived there for a year or two max. Am I stuck running the bandaid bus for 4 years until the promotional exam? Is getting the paramedic license a guarantee that I'll be hired? Is all hope lost? Besides military is there anything I can do to up my standing? Hypothetically I score a 100 on the written test and do everything right, am I still stuck for a few years waiting? Any advice helps, I appreciate y'all.
I know this might not be the proper place for this question so forgive me, there’s just a lack of firefighter Reddit’s to ask.
I’m from NY state and firefighting is something I’ve always wanted to do; recently I got the canvas letter in the mail. It asked about my interest and what type of employment I was interested in (permanent, contingent permanent) to which I submitted right away of course in all three ways offered being mail, fax, and email out of excitement. Someone I knew alerted me that they got the canvas and almost 1 month later after they did their CPAT is when I got my canvas letter but as I waited for that email to let me know the possible date to take the physical, it never came. My town recently hired a few people who got the letter for the current academy, so I was just confused as to what my letter meant. My biggest question is does the canvas letter mean “hey your next be ready as we’re hiring again before the list eligibility is up,” or was I just another person who got the letter but didn’t make the cut?
I'm taking the fire exam in January, but I'm afraid of heights. Is this a big issue? Do all fire fighters have to go on the massive platform that goes high in the air stemming from the fire truck? (fine with sky scrappers just that ladder) I am only 18 so maybe I can get over it with age, but I was just seeing if it's mandatory or if that's only a position you can possibly request out of thank you.
Hello, everyone. Good day!
I'm writing this post because I'm planning a visit to NYC soon, and I want to drop by a firehouse and buy a t-shirt. I know there are other posts like this here (I've done my research before posting), but I have a few questions that I haven't seen anyone asking. I hope I'm not breaking the rules and not being disrespectful.
first things first, am I allowed to visit? Asking this because I'm not a US citizen
if yes, what days and hours should I avoid? I don't want to be nuisance and I know the firehouse is your working space, I respect that
should I bring something over? I've read some people say don't bring food, and others saying to bring a cake or donuts, however I don't know if that's acceptable at all and I'd like to hear your opinion
I don't have venmo and stuff like that, is cash okay? How much do you charge for a t-shirt?
if the doors are closed, should I knock or do something?
Those are some of the questions I have. I'm trying to be as respectful as possible. Please let me know if I should take notice of something too. I apologize if there are any mistakes, English is not my first language.
Thank you!
so are selections random? lets say 100 people have got a perfect score no extra points do they pick randomly? does a resume come into play? connections? let me know
Does anyone have details (where/when/sign up) for upcoming free tutorial sessions offered by FDNY? I contacted the office of recruitment & retention and they emailed me a form to fax over for info which feels insane without access to a fax machine.
i know that the FDNY runs KME engines not sure about the ladders. Now that KME is out of business what is the FDNY going to do with their KME’s? How will they maintain them?
