I have 3 shell stations within a couple miles of my house and all of them are so much more expensive than everyone else. They bought out another station and their price jumped 30 cents/gal overnight (that was a couple weeks ago and the station directly across the street went up maybe 3 cents in the same time). The most expensive one is like 90 cents/gal higher. What do they think they're selling, magic potions?

Hi I’m (25F) worried I’ll never be able to buy a house here. My dream has always been to raise children in Sea Cliff or Oyster Bay (where I live currently with my mom).

I commute M-F to midtown manhattan for work making roughly 80k yearly with a good deal of equity however I want to take time off around 30-35 when I plan on having children until they can go to kindergarten. I have no debt but only about 7K in savings and 20k in my retirement plan (5% matched at my job). The commute to the city is getting rough- I know people have done it for their whole lives but I’m at the office for anywhere from 9-12 hours daily and I’m starting to lose it a bit as I barely have enough time to sleep 7 hrs most days.

I want to get an apartment closer to work for at least 2 years so I can live a healthier lifestyle, stop spending so much on takeout for lunch/dinner, jumpstart my career and have a life outside of work.

Do you have any advice to first time homebuyers or advice specific to my position?

Am I crazy for getting an apartment when I’d like to buy a house by 30 and my mom doesn’t ask me to pay towards the bills?

I grew up in another state where even when a side road was closed, they set an official detour route with signs to get to the construction endpoint or beyond. It might have been anywhere from just one sign up to a dozen if there were multiple turns / roads involved.

It seems on the Island, they just shut a major highway, divert traffic and don't account for what happens next. My first experience with this was the day I moved here a few decades ago: 495 closed with all traffic diverted to an exit with a stop light! No police there to direct traffic and override the normal timing so thousands of cars coming off a 5 lane highway could continue down the service road . . . nothing but a massive miles long, dead stop traffic jam. At the time I thought it was a bug, but I've learned in the years since it's a feature of roadwork.
