The home subreddit for New York City!

Welcome to r/NewYorkCity! Your thoughts and opinions matter here, so feel free to subscribe and participate!

Rules:

  1. Posts must be related to New York City (which includes all five boroughs, not just Manhattan).

  2. No blatant or distasteful self-promoting of your own blog/social media/killer app/business. Obvious spammers and repeat offenders will be perma-banned. However, if you have some quality original content to post, you may tastefully link to a source in the comments.

  3. No sharing of personal information, doxxing, or witch hunts. No sharing private photos or videos of others taken without consent. Offenders will be perma-banned.

  4. ABSOLUTELY NO ADVOCATING/INCITING VIOLENCE! Being a dick is fine (we're New Yorkers after all) but using language that is abusive or discriminatory will not be tolerated, and will result in a perma-ban.

  5. Your account must be older than 24 hours to submit and comment. This is to prevent spam.

  6. No Polls or Surveys: This is not /r/SampleSize.

  7. Respect Laws: This is not the place to sell/buy drugs, prostitutes, guns/weapons, or other contraband. Attempting to do so will result in a perma-ban.

  8. News Articles: Only one article per news event (articles with new information are exempt). Post title must match linked article headline.

  9. Political posts are allowed, but must have a non-leading title. Posts about events for a specific candidate or political issue are allowed, as are posts intended to foster discussion about political issues/candidates. *For Example: "Don't forget to vote Yes on Prop X" or "Vote for Y Candidate" are not allowed. "Rally for Y Candidate on Date" is allowed. "What do you think about Prop X?" is allowed.

  10. PHOTOGRAPHY ONLY ALLOWED ON WEEKENDS! Weekday photo posts will be removed. When you do post your photos, please only post one each weekend day. No spamming your entire camera roll. Artwork and historical photos are permitted during weekdays.

  11. Limit Submissions to No More than Two (2) per 24 Hour Period. Unless if it’s something that has to be mentioned or shared & you believe it’s absolutely necessary, please limit your submissions to no more than two per 24 hour period. It’s alright to share one submission, or two, but it’s excessive to share 3 or more per 24 hour period, which at that point will be removed as spam & action taken. This is implemented in order to not have certain users inundate the subreddit with their content, and give others a chance to share content.

What's are the best stadiums for concerts in New York?

I partially mean the biggest, but I also mean the most-organized, highest quality, safest, and most up-to-date.

Response to people who “hate” New York

Im at a trade show on the west coast and every time people ask me where I’m from and I say “Manhattan” they just immediately shit on New York to my face. Like I get you don’t like it. I’m not here to argue one thing over another. But it’s so weird to meet a stranger and just flatly tell them “you live in a hell hole”. I’m starting to get testy with people but I can’t get too mean cause of my job

What do people need right now?

I got asked a weird question today. “What do people in NYC need right now: physically, politically, ideologically etc?”

Public bathrooms? I said I’d get back to them with a better answer. What do you think?

Enough is Enough: Let’s Stop Treating New York Like a Dump

New Yorkers, we need to talk about the state of our streets. Everywhere you look, there’s trash—overflowing garbage cans, litter scattered on sidewalks, people dumping things wherever they feel like it. It’s like we’ve forgotten that this is our home.

We all claim to love New York, but love isn’t just words—it’s action. If we want to be proud of this city, we need to start treating it with the respect it deserves. Every time you toss something on the ground or leave garbage where it doesn’t belong, you’re contributing to a problem that makes our neighborhoods less livable for all of us.

Let’s stop acting like New York is a landfill. Pick up after yourself, put trash where it belongs, and encourage others to do the same. Small acts of care add up, and we can make this city as beautiful as it deserves to be.

New York is worth it. Let’s show it the love we say we have.

Family left a backpack on E train

To the family ( Dad, and 3 daughters) on E train subway to WTC. I don't t remember exactly which stop they got off. They had a lot luggage with them, with the 'Transfer' tag on them ( LGA ATL).

They looked exhausted, and were scrambling to exit the train at their stop.

After few minutes, I realized they left behind a backpack. I let the train operator know about it when the train arrived at WTC. He collected the backpack (possibly to deposit it into lost and found)

Hope you see this, and get back you bag.

Can We Talk About Subway Etiquette? Walk on the Right, People!

Honestly, NYC is a fast-paced city and we all get it, but can we PLEASE get some basic subway etiquette down? The worst is when people stop in the middle of the stairs or right by an entrance like they’re sightseeing. People are trying to move!

And for the love of all things, walk on the right side—especially up the stairs. It’s not that hard, but somehow every day it’s like navigating an obstacle course.

What’s your biggest subway pet peeve? I know we all have at least one…

Monthly Discussion Thread - Month of October, 2024

It’s a new month and welcome to the next Monthly Discussion Thread!

Use this thread to talk about what’s going on in & around New York City, or any topic both small & large, if you’d want to chat, bring up touristy questions/requests, air your grievances, so on. If something doesn’t merit its own post, you’re free to share here. Some example topics may include:

  • Regularly asked questions (hint, you can also ask on r/AskNYC)

  • Recommended spots for a meal (consider asking on r/FoodNYC), walk, bike ride (also consider asking on r/NYCBike or r/MicromobilityNYC) drink in/near NYC.

  • Volunteer opportunities.

  • Tourism questions/inquiries.

  • Talk about city specific politics & other hot topics of the day.

  • General topics that may not need its own thread due to brevity/simplicity/low-effort.

Useful info:

News of the Day:

NY Daily News | NY1 | NBC New York

Alternate Subreddits, if you need further help and/or find the right community for you.

  • r/AskNYC - Your one stop shop for questions, suggestions and/or answers for tourist inquiries, basic NYC life, or those tip-of-the-tongue requests even locals have sometimes.

  • The 5 borough subreddits: r/Manhattan, r/Queens, r/Brooklyn, r/StatenIsland, r/Bronx for niche content pertaining to Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and the Bronx respectively.

  • r/NYCpics - per rule 10, photo submissions that aren’t art/historical shouldn’t be shared there on weekdays (Monday-Friday), and would be a better fit on the aforementioned borough subreddits, or r/NYCPics instead.

Self promoting

  • Ideally for the time being, unless if it’s a pervasive issue, please consider sharing your self promotion posts/events here, it’ll help keep the subreddit tidy, and you can find what you’re looking for and/or want to promote, whether it’s your event, comedy show, etc.

And finally…

For your viewing preference, comments here will by default be sorted by “new”. Keep in mind of the rules when commenting here, keep things SFW & self-moderate yourselves, and finally be courteous to your fellow neighbor. Hope you all find this thread useful!
