News, discussion, and current events for the state of New Jersey

NewJersey Subreddit Rules (Moderator discretion applies)

Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life.

  • R1: No hate speech or trolling: Racism, homophobia, transphobia, antisemitism, sexism, & hate speech against minority groups, religions, or national origin is prohibited. That goes for language you might have used in other subs.

  • R2: No reposts, redundant content, or old news. Check the queue first before posting.

  • R3: No posts for information or requests for illegal products, services, or activities. No unnecessary violent content.

  • R4: No off-topic posts. Content must be substantially about or unique to New Jersey.

  • R5: When possible, link to the original article of a news story, and absolutely NOT a partisan re-write to make a political point. No linkjacking.

  • R6: No links to articles behind hard paywalls (like Wall Street Journal). Soft paywalls are allowed (like NY Times & NorthJersey.com)

  • R7: Headline & link format: No link shorteners or otherwise obscured links, including posts, text, and comments.

  • R8: Articles must be submitted as Links, not as a Self-Post.

  • R9: No ALL CAPS TITLES or inappropriate use of NSFW/Spoiler flairs to get increased visibility. Submissions must in English.

  • R10: Please, don't post a help/advice question needing a local business without mentioning where you are or how far are you willing to travel, etc. It does no good for us to help you find the nearest shoe repair shop in Atlantic County only to find out later you're in Morris.

  • R11: No denying, downplaying, or spreading misinformation about COVID 19 or measures to reduce its spread. This includes: vaccines, quarantines, limits on gatherings, mask wearing, contact tracing, and other public health measures. Moderators can and will use personal judgement when enforcing this rule.

And finally...

  • Don't drive slow in the left/passing lane.

  • Don't drive with high beams on while passing traffic.

  • Don't take up more than one spot in a parking lot.

  • Don't drive with snow and ice on your car.

  • Don't shift lanes / make a turn without using your turn signal.

What to do:

  • Be nice, be funny, be informative. Shitposts may be allowed if they make moderators laugh.

  • Events! What going on in New Jersey? Post it! (But not NYC or Philly; they have their own subs.)

  • If you're rude, you better be twice as funny.

  • If you're self-promoting, it better be good.

  • Report accidents, incidents, and closed roads on Waze.

Any question on rules or other sub issues, please message the moderators.

New Jersey Division of Taxation in person help locations....

I'm just making sure I do this correctly, on the New Jersey Division of Taxation website it doesn't mention any appointment is needed or anyway to schedule one, so I just show up during their business hours? Am I missing anything?

New Jersey's House Representatives Vote to BAN DJI Drones

Our US House members have just voted in favor of H.R. 2864, the "Countering CCP Drones Act," which effectively bans all DJI drones by adding them to the FCC's Covered List. All that's left is for the US Senate to approve it, and it will soon become law! This has bipartisan support, all based on "ooh China scary".

What's the FCC Covered List?

The FCC Covered List includes companies whose equipment and services are considered national security risks. Once on this list, products can't receive FCC certification, which is essential for operating legally on U.S. communications networks. If DJI drones are added, it means no new DJI equipment can be sold or used in the U.S. for any purpose that involves radio transmission, including hobby and professional drone flying.

Why Does This Matter?

Banning DJI drones impacts thousands of consumers and businesses that rely on these products for everything from photography and videography to public safety and search-and-rescue missions. If you have DJI equipment, it could become worthless, and replacing it will cost thousands of dollars for new drones, transmitters, goggles, and more even if you could find equipment to replace it.

Why We Need to Fight This

This decision is arbitrary and targets a single vendor without addressing the broader risk of espionage across many other consumer electronics. It's a slippery slope that could set a precedent for further bans on other technologies, limiting consumer choice and increasing costs for everyone.

What You Can Do

Contact your senators and let them know you oppose H.R. 2864. Ask for transparency and a balanced approach that protects both national security and consumer rights. This isn't just about drones—it's about our freedom to choose the technology we want to use.

Make your voice heard before it's too late!

Unemployment- Employer Address

I don't know if this is the right place for this, let me know if it's not.

I got laid off today. I'm filling out an unemployment claim on nj.gov, thet automatically pull my employer's (well former employer's) information from my W2 based on my social security.

But the address is wrong. I verified the EIN on my last W2 and that is correct. There is no way to edit the address

My question is, should I just submit the form with the incorrect address? Would I disqualify? And if I shouldn't, who should I reach out to?

Thanks!

UPDATE: I looked up the address on Google, found a website with a phone number, called them and asked if they were associated with my former employer. Turns out they're a 3rd party that processes unemployment claims for them. I submitted the form and all is good. Well, I still need a new job, that part's not so good.

So I see that Saturdays event requests to be booked by January of this year so it's way too late. I heard it was available to see last Friday. Will it be visible tomorrow? If so what time and where is the best place to see this.

TIL Red Bank is super nice

I'm sorry. I'm absolutely flabbergasted. I really had no idea. I thought it would be another sh!thole shore town. I could not believe how cute Red Bank is, and what a great downtown. Is this a thing people know about??? Yes I know I sound like a North Jersey snob (or maybe just an idiot). But before you judge me too harshly, I told this to three other people and they were all equally astonished. So up here at least, people think it's basically Egg Harbor.

I accept your inevitable downvotes, but I'm truly hat-in-hand here. I had no idea it was so nice, I'm looking forward to going back.

experience with leaving NJ state employee retirement Alternative Benefit Plan (ABP)?

This is specific to people who have been NJ state employees and left for other employment, or at least someone who has experience with these types of plans and personal finances.

In an email to set up a phone meeting with a financial representative after changing employement, I was told that should I move funds out of the ABP, I will not be able to use the plan again if I am a state employee in the future. I don't necessarily plan on doing so, but I cannot rule it out.

I have personal reasons at this moment to move the funds, but I'm not clear what the risk/reward situation is. If I do work for the state in the future, am I really losing a significant benefit by not having access to the ABP retirement fund? Aren't I just able to use private retirement accounts that are as good?

Forgive the naivete, I don't have a lot of experience with this sort of stuff. I realize it is ridiculously important at some level, but it all feels like it operates behind a curtain that I never pull up because I spend all of my time, patience, and energy on, ya know, day to day life...

Jury Duty reporting time for Middlesex County

Has anyone reported for jury duty in New Brunswick recently? Just wondering what time jurors are typically supposed to arrive. I know the info will be provided if I'm required to report, but trying to figure out logistics with my kids if I do have to go in. Looking online it doesn't appear to be virtual anymore.

M/Tue/Wed overnight stay (Union County)

Hello Union County residents. I am looking to rent a room/closet/small-space for Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday nights, on a weekly basis. I know that isn’t ideal, but figured I try asking anyhow. Reason for request is due to back-to-office policy. My current commute is 3hr+ round trip. Would be nice to cut that in half, then in half again, and maybe in half once more.

I don’t need access to kitchen/living spaces/other rooms. I would only request to have a small space to relax/sleep in, access to WiFi, and access to bathroom with shower. I’m not sure what pricing makes sense for this type of ask, open to suggestions via DM. Back in college, I used to pay dinner for a family of 3 as payment, on daily basis. I can do better than that, just providing example.

Again, I know this type of request is a long shot, but my current commute is killer. If it helps with decision-making, I’m also okay with sleeping in my car, meaning I only need access to a space for WiFi and bathroom/shower.

Please and thank you!
