Were you wearing a Coach hat when you got on the D train at 125th street station this morning? If so, I have something I'd like to tell you.

Hi Reddit! I (24f) recently joined the app back in May and usually just open it to read posts from the AITA subreddit.

However, a missed connection I had today made me want to make a post even though I know it’s a long shot.

Long story short, I was at the 125th subway station in Harlem this morning around 10:30am and was getting on the D train headed downtown. As I was getting on, a nice looking gentleman in front of me took a step to the side in order to let me on first so I could grab a seat. He then took a seat across from me and the doors closed. Once we started moving, he turned to me and asked what brand of sunglasses I was wearing.

I was initially surprised by the question as I rarely get spoken to by strangers on the subway, but still I gave him my answer thinking nothing of it and he smiled and said he was curious because he worked in optometry and had never seen a pair like mine before and he really liked them. We shared a small laugh after I explained where I got them from and he thanked me for letting him know. Afterwards, we rode in silence for a few minutes as the train made it’s way to the next stop which is where I was getting off. I contemplated striking up another conversation, but knowing I was just about to get off made me decide against it.

Well, I regretted that decision as soon as I stood up to leave, because this very attractive man who I didn’t know made it a point to say, “I hope you have a good day!”  as I got off the train. I realized then that his comments might have been an attempt at flirting, and I was just too oblivious to notice at the time (though I could be wrong about this, I'm not sure).

I wasn’t even up the stairs to leave the platform before I found myself wishing I had at least gotten his name or contact info, but I was too shy in the moment to do so.

So here I am, making a post on reddit in the hopes that maybe, possibly, he might see this and reach out. I know this is the longest of long shots, but after telling my mom about this interaction and my regret, she encouraged me to type this up because she correctly pointed out that I have nothing to lose in doing so.

Therefore, I'm just holding onto the hope that this post somehow finds the right person and we can have a conversation that lasts longer than a couple of minutes :)

Edit: If you are the person I'm looking for, let me know what brand of glasses I told you I was wearing 👍

Giving Tuesday

Hi Harlem! Do you know of or recommend any local businesses in Harlem to donate to today or any day? I would like to give back to something very local. Money works, but any fundraisers, drives, or causes collecting items in the area would be great, too. Thank you!

Plastic Bag Recycling [Central Harlem]

Does anyone know where to recycle plastic bags? I used to go to the Rite Aid at 117 but they’ve since closed.

Where can I find a newspaper?

Anyone know where I might be able to pick up a physical copy of the NYT? I've checked pretty much all of the locations from this thread a few months back but no luck. I can't recall ever having seen the paper anywhere either so I'm hoping someone on /r/harlem can help!

Ideally it would be closer to Lenox but I'm willing to travel if it's a place that stocks pretty decent numbers of papers.

Thanks all

EDIT: Found a copy at a new stand SW corner of Broadway and 116th

For future searchers, the following places didn't stock NYT:

  • Any bodega I went to in Harlem

  • Book Culture (either location)

  • New stands on 125 (7th and FDR), both closed on Sunday?

  • CVS

Thanksgiving meals?

Anyone aware of any Thanksgiving meals/dinners being done today by any churches or organizations locally? It's just me and my (german shepherd) puppy today and I would like to be able to have a nice little dinner if there is one out there. I looked around online and didn't come up with anything. I'm sure a lot of places aren't advertising that sort of thing over the internet anyway. If you know any it would be great!

Living in the Bronx near Little Italy but happy to travel a bit for some food.

(Throwaway account because this is a little embarassing and sad, actually.. 🥸)

So. Many. Drums.

Where the FUQ are the drums coming from? I’m on Manhattan and 119 and I hear straight up DRUMS… sounds like a pretty lit marching band if I’m honest. Decent beat. I don’t hate it. This is the second or third time I’ve heard them - always at night. Can’t find an answer anywhere. What am I missing?

Injured squirrel at gate of Thomas Jefferson Park

Not sure where to post…maybe someone here can help. Squirrel was at the gate of 112th St and 1st Av at 2pm. Was making noises as if in pain, staring at us. Have never seen something like it. Seemed to be suffering.

Added a picture if anyone knows how to handle this or better report it. I reported it to 311 but it might take 5 days…

thanks community.

You should try this if you're getting a pup any time soon

A friend of mine created this detailed dog training series a couple of years ago and I feel like it doesn't get the love it deserves. She's a fully accredited dog trainer and built this course over several years in order to save new dog owners money. Hiring a private trainer for your pup normally costs $100+ per hour and taking them to puppy preschool is typically $150 for 6 classes that just go over the basics (sit, stay etc.). Not to mention if you want to take your dog to the more advanced classes after puppy preschool it's hundreds more. She made this course so she can spend time with her pups whilst still helping people train their dogs.

Adrienne teaches everything covered there in this one course so you can teach your pup in the comfort of your own home, at your own pace and for a fraction of the price. The best part is, she works with you as you teach your pup, you can reach out to her whenever you run into any issues and she'll help. So you still get the 1 on 1 expert opinion that you'd get from a private trainer, all you have to do is send her an explanation or video of the problem you're trying to address or issues in teaching that you're having.

Delete this post if it's not allowed but I just thought this might help some new dog parents :)

Link here to check out the training program

Graffiti Removal

So, I just learned that you can report addresses to the Department of Sanitation to have graffiti removed. Whoever owns the building is then given the option to clean the graffiti themselves, have DSNY do it, or keep the graffiti: https://www.nyc.gov/site/dsny/what-we-do/cleaning/graffiti.page

I encourage people to do this to help clean up some of the messier areas of Harlem, or anywhere. There's definitely been some gang activity and violence lately in my neighborhood - thankfully the girl shot near Starbucks survived - and quality-of-life stuff like simple graffiti removal sets the standard and shows hood people that we are not in some lawless city where anything goes.

Did I just see a dead person on Lenox Ave?

I was just heading home around 20 minutes ago, right off 125 St Downtown Station, and saw someone lying on the floor in a very strange position (yoga’s child pose is the best way I can describe it) considering it was raining and cold. Not a lot of people in the street, I noticed a woman talking to 911 and as much as I’d like to do something this was personally a very draining day. But I was curious if anyone else saw it or know what happened?

Mofongo

Inspired by the most recent post about Spanish food - I’ve been craving mofongo but haven’t found a good place with reasonable prices. Anyone have any ideas?

Longshot but if any hood peeps are on here, where can I get Spanish food as good as the Bronx?

Update: L Tina’s for the win! I open it to see perfectly cooked. Maduros not too oily. Perfect fucking texture. Very well seasoned steak beans weren’t watery at all either. You just had the juice and the beautiful seasoning. Will probably try the others that were recommended a lot and update here if that is still allowed to be updated, but holy shit, y’all that just gave me a food coma and made me feel like I was home again thank you thank you thank you. Reddit did it again :-) Ever since my spot closed I’ve been trying to find something, but haven’t found my go to yet. Didn’t really like Santiago’s too much. I don’t think it’s made with love and it’s kind of salty, most places can’t do maduro‘s correctly or their beans be mad watery. Always thought Molecon was trash. I just want a bomb ass family combo and I’m really craving some pepper steak with onions and avocado.

Christian Churches

My relationship with my faith has been rocky, but I’ve been looking into trying to join the church again. I miss the community among other things

Does anyone know of any (mostly) nondenominational Christian churches in the area around Marcus Garvey that they would recommend/are a part of?

For context, I am a white girl in her 20’s, originally from the Bible Belt, but moved to Central Harlem a few years ago.

SUV Back-windshields Vandalism

Over the last several months I’ve seen countless SUV windshields smashed around the Harlem area. Most people report no items taken and the acts seem to be completely random other than the fact that they are SUVs. No clue if it’s malicious individuals or some glass/auto-body shop but it’s crazy. Anyone know of what’s going on or seen similar instances?

Survey looking to see if Big 5 Personality Traits correlate with NYC neighborhoods! (Harlem responses wanted!)

I found this paper that showed a correlation between Big 5 personality traits and neighborhood choice in the Greater London Area. I wanted to see if these results could be replicated in NYC.

I'm looking for 8k-18k responses to ensure statistical validity.

The survey will give you your Big 5 Personality scores as an incentive. Open to suggestions.
