Hi all,
My wife and I relocated to NYC a year ago for my job. She saw this as a perfect opportunity to pursue her lifelong dream of breaking into the fashion industry, something she couldn't afford to do while growing up in Brazil. Do you have any tips on how she can secure an entry-level corporate position in planning, buying, or merchandising?
Her background: She has an undergraduate degree in Nautic and Physics from Navy School and worked as a Vessel Captain in the Oil Industry for some years. If you saw her, you would never believe it and even after many years of marriage, I am still impressed :D After saving enough money, she enrolled in an MBA program at a top European business school. Upon graduation, she worked as a project manager for two years at a tech company in Berlin (I am German) before we moved to NYC. She quickly found a job as an Assistant Retail Manager at a flagship store in SOHO, as she has experience leading operational teams with 25+ people and they were looking for someone to structure and change the team. However, with her MBA, she always aimed to transition to work in the corporate world. We did some research and found out that to manage that in NYC, you need to have the right network. Hence, she left the retail job and enrolled in an associate degree program at FIT to build her network and to be able to take any Entry Opportunity (Internship / Entry Level). She also chose evening classes so she can start to work simultaneously if she is able to land a job.
My two cents as a husband: She is great with numbers, an organizer, a great person and someone who is willing to fight for her dream. Her eyes shine when she comes home from classes as she really is living her dream by being surrounded by people who are into fashion and having lectures on that subject. I firmly believe, she just needs that one shot to prove herself and I am sure she will convince them.
Thank you for any tips you have to help her!
Hi, I currently work in the school system for the NYCDOE and my salary is decent but because I get home fairly early and I don't have any kids I would like a second job so that I can be able to save more comfortably and shop, vacation, and save without worrying.
The economy is pretty bad so I want to feel more secure and be able to save. I'm having some trouble doing that. I know that getting an early intervention job is an option but believe it or not my heart is truly in service jobs. I also feel like a second jon outside of the education field would be benefial towards my mental health.
When I was in college approximately 10 years ago, I would waitress bartend and work for catering agencies and I was just wondering if anybody had tips on how to jump back into service because my resume Would have experience from seven years ago and I don't know if any restaurant managers would be willing to work with me also.
I am located in Brooklyn. Does anyone know of any restaurants that are desperately looking for waitresses? or do you think restaurant/ bar managers will will deny me because I've been out od the industry for so long. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
I'm sorry, I don't have anyone to ask.
My Experience :
Please I'm looking for work anywhere in manhattan or Brooklyn, all recommendations will be appreciated.
I'll also add that I have tried to join unions but people always gate-keep, it's like people don't like putting others on and it's sad because I always told strangers "oh my job is hiring, here is the link" when i was employed but people don't do that for me.
Oh well, I do hope someone reaches out with some info because I have run out of places to apply to.

Are there any jobs hiring on the spot or urgently hiring? I am a single mother. I have experience in retail management, food service, and as an administrative assistant. At this point I will take ANYTHING. ANY PAY. I don’t care if it’s McDonald’s, a deli, or whatever. I am not able to live off of food stamps and cash assistance and this is not normal for me. Please if anyone has any suggestions in Manhattan or Brooklyn let me know. I will work any shift, any time, any range of pay. I have a child to provide for and bills and I’m getting depressed about it
How long after your interview did you get an offer letter? And how long was the hiring process in general. Thank you
