Quiet Seafood Restaurant in Astoria or LIC

I’m looking for a relaxed place, with elbow room, to have dinner next Thursday. A bathroom that’s not cramped would be a plus (just a pet peeve lately). Any cuisine is fine but especially Greek or Japanese. TIA!

Missing Hooters wings in NYC! Any Suggestions for Similar Flavors?

Hey everyone,

I’m feeling a bit nostalgic and craving those classic Hooters wings, but sadly, all the locations here in Manhattan have closed down. 😔 I used to love the tangy yet savory flavor of their wings, and now I’m on a mission to find something similar.

Does anyone have any recommendations for places in Manhattan that serve wings with a taste reminiscent of Hooters? I’m open to trying new spots and would appreciate any advice or suggestions you can offer! Thanks in advance! 🍗

Our week in New York

We had a good time in New York over a week.  We ended up upscaling everything and totally enjoyed ourselves.  The input from the group was responsible for our good time.  The downside is we will be eating box Mac and cheese for months to pay for everything we did.  Here is what we did.

Day 1- Flew in and went to The Dead Rabbit for drinks and food.  Had two great drinks as well as Oysters, Sausage rolls and other delectable bites.

Day 2 - We went to the Cloisters for the first time. Ate at Cachapas Y Mas for lunch.  Dinner was at Nougatine. Excellent

Day 3 - Was our day in Central Park and go sight seeing.  Had dinner at Mari.  Excellent food and service

Day 4 - Essential Bagels in the morning. 5 Acres at the Rockefeller center for snacks and a drink.  Estela for dinner.  Great food, ambiance was lacking some.

Day 5 - Museum of Natural History and then dinner at Le Bernardin .  We enjoyed this immensely and did the wine pairing.  Everything was spot on.

Day 6 - Russ and Daughters for breakfast.  High Line walk. Book of Mormons.  Snacked as we walked.  New York Pizza Suprema for a slice.

Day 7 - Metropolitan Museum. Jua for dinner.  Another great meal.

Day 8 - Lazy day.  Bagel Pub for breakfast.  Tavern on the Green for lunch.  Not the best.  Le Rock for dinner.  Good food, but other areas lacking.

As you can see, we spend way above what we could afford, but had a great time.  Would do it again, but save up more first.

Restaurants with the biggest difference in critic vs audience score?

My friends and I play this game sometimes where we try to find movies with massive gaps in their rotten tomatoes critic/audience scores: either high faluten, snobby movies that audiences do not connect with or raunchy, stupid comedies that critics pan but audiences love.

What restaurants would you say have the biggest differences? For example, Pete Wells LOVES una pizza, but I’ve heard very middling things at best

Specific (I hope…) Recommendation Request

I’m looking for a restaurant that meets the following (hopefully) specific parameters, and appreciate all suggestions. :)

  • On the nicer side, as it’s to celebrate a graduation.
  • No more than $100 USD pp, excluding alcohol, tip, tax. (4 people)
  • some are relatively picky American eaters, so limited to American, Italian, maybe Tex-mex, Steakhouse, BBQ, and maybe a few others.
  • Will be coming from Yankee Stadium. Looking for basically anything in Manhattan below ~120th st.
  • Must take reservations

Thanks!

Celebratory dinner in Brooklyn or Lower Manhattan

Looking for something to celebrate mine and my partners promotions - doesn’t have to be upscale necessarily, but something unique or modern with an edge. Food/ambience equally important. Different/special dining experiences cool too. TIA.

Where should we go for a Divorce Party dinner?

I live here and my friend is coming for a long weekend. She finalized her divorce and we are throwing her a party all weekend. Where should we go to dinner on a Saturday night? This is like the opposite of a bachelorette party but we are older (late 30s and early 40s) and a bunch of us have kids at home. It's mostly women.

We want somewhere rowdy but with really good food. Ideally, sit down with a reservation but we will definitely drink a lot and be quite loud. Maybe we hit up two places near each other? There are about 10 people.

Look, we're old but still want to party at least a few times per year. We're not into clubs or bottle service or any of that. It also doesn't need to be fine dining. We are looking to be closer to $150-$200 per person with food and lots of drinks. We want a good, old fashioned, rowdy, loud, dinner party.

Dinner at Crown Shy

One of the many ideas I have for my partner’s birthday dinner is to treat him to a wine and dine Friday night. Thinking of starting out at bar nearby for drinks and the popping over to Crown Shy for dinner and maybe a night cap after.

Please share your reviews on Crown Shy? Pros/Cons? What to order? What to avoid? How to dress? How to make it extra special?

Any bars in the neighborhood you would recommend for before and/or after? Vibes have got to be vibey for the celebration!

Veronika @ Fotografiska, NYC

Thinking of treating my boyfriend to a wine and dine night at Veronika at Fotografiska. Maybe starting at the bar and then transitioning to the restaurant for dinner.

Got any reviews on the place? Pros/Cons? What to order? What to avoid? How to dress? How to make it extra special?

What are your easy weekday meals? And your more elaborate weekend meals?

Wife and I prepare practically all of our meals, we tend toward quick recipes during the week, leaving some more elaborate ones for the weekend.

Looking for inspiration and to provide an idea exchange for everyone.

So, what are your go-to meals for the week/weekend?

These are some of ours:

  • pizza: we mastered making our own dough using a $99 Panasonic bread maker. Favorite toppings: mushrooms and sausages
  • cast iron grilled salmon with fresh pesto, over pasta
  • tacos with home made blue corn tortillas, we learned this recently, game changer
  • sous vide filet mignon
  • rack of lamb
  • air frier sweet spicy potato fries (this is a side that goes with everything)

Celebratory meals near FiDi?

Hello NY foodies! San Diego food lover coming in peace.

In town until Friday for a big work event, want to celebrate with some fantastic eats.

Land at 5pm today and have a dinner at Ciprianis tonight (work scheduled) but Thursday lunch, dinner, and Friday brunch are in need of recs.

Thursday I was thinking of doing something a little quicker for lunch ie. Katz or Russ & Daughters, and then exploring that area until dinner. Dbl Chicken Plz or Attaboy for drinks before dinner depending on line.

I have a reservation at Crown Shy for Thursday dinner and my plan was to try and have a drink upstairs at Understory either before or after the meal. Dead Rabbit is backup if that doesn’t work. Depending on hunger I may be naughty and go for a 10pm meal at Nowon.

Friday I was looking at Grand Banks but keeping an eye on the weather. This is the day I really need help with…. I’m staying at the Beekman, anything great in that area?? Happy to walk or subway, and would just be me.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Looking for a fun, vibey dinner spot with great vegan options for 40th birthday celebration- group of 8 guys

Any recs appreciated. Bonus points if midtown or near subway. We don't want a hole in the wall, open to all cuisines. If really good cocktails even better. Manhattan only

BYOB liquor?

Hey folks, I recently bought some baiju that I'd love to pair with chinese food. Any of you aware of what the liquor policies are for BYOB chinese spots (e.g., Wu's Wonton King, Peking Duck House, Spicy Village)?

NYC Restaurants For Fun Business Dinners (No 4 hr tasting menus please)

Hi I have a business trip to NYC at the end of July for 6 days. I'm looking for high end, excellent restaurants for groups of 4-10 that are fun/nice vibe. Ages are from 25-45 years old. We are open to suggestions/ideas but would prefer not to have to sit through a super long tasting menu (dinner should be less than 3 hrs unless we want to extend it). We are staying at the Gansevoort Hotel in Meat Packing District. Prefer places that are closer but don't mind being in the car if the place is excellent. Thank you in advance.

Upscale that’s vegetarian friendly

Hi! I’m looking for an upscale restaurant that’s vegetarian friendly but still serves meat to celebrate my partner passing the bar exam. She and I are vegetarian but all our friends eat meat. Thank you!!

Edit: $50-100 per person, likely 10-15 people

Sam Yoo can handle the TikTok influencers

Hi everyone! I write a newsletter featuring interviews with food and drink folks and I just shared an interview with Sam Yoo of Golden Diner. We chatted about menu development, TikTok surges, and *the* pancakes. I think folks would like it!

If you've been, what's your go-to order? I love the Thai cobb salad and the wings and the chicken katsu sando.

Best doubles or patties in bk/manhattan?

I’ve been craving a deliciously baked patty or some doubles

Bonus tips for any spots that include roti or oxtail dishes.

Haven’t found a go to spot and I’ve seen a lot of mixed reviews for places close to me.

Large party accommodation in queens? ~25 people

Hi all. I’m curious to know if there’s any places in Queens (preferably Flushing, Murray Hill, Bayside, etc area but open to other areas) that can fit a fairly large party. I’m looking around and all I can see are like Korean bbq, hot pot, etc. while those are all great, I feel they can’t fit us all without splitting us up into different groups/sections. I’m more trying to look into like a family/banquet style type where we can all sit together (or at least close enough).

Thanks!

Lunch for 8 people near Grand Central

What's a good place to dine in midtown where I can make a reservation or easily get a table for 8 people for my mom's birthday for a Sunday lunch? 4 in the group are older (60+), and the other 4 are a young family with 2 children (both good diners- arguably with a more agreeable palate than the older folks). Another caveat- the older folks don't want to travel too far from Grand Central Station. Not fine dining but not too casual either. Open to all types of food but ideally there will be some variety of the menu so everyone can be happy. Thanks in advance for any ideas

Food stuff to take home

My fiance will be in the city this weekend (staying in and traveling around midtown). What should I tell her to bring home to me (via train)? Assuming baked goods would travel best but definitely open to other suggestions. Thanks!
