Feeling like @clarkshooter

bought my first bolt around a month ago and love every second of it, i’m probably 300 rounds deep and I still get a little nauseous when I see the price of ammo

Is scope base with a 15 MOA can't enough for a 22LR at 50-200 yds?

Do thin barrels tend to open up in all directions under heat?

Didn’t want to flair this with the “Group flex” flair because 4moa isn’t a flex, but I decided to do some experimenting the other day. Got my cold bore zero verified, and wanted to just do a straight burn-down on my barrel to see what exactly it does when it heats up. Rangefound the distance to be 89yd, not 100, as a couple folks in here mentioned Carter’s Country’s ranges to not be the most accurate in distance. Barrel is a #2 profile firing .300 Win, so I typically only get about 3-4 shots out of it or so before I consider it too hot, since that’s right about when it’s too hot to touch.

On a 3-shot group I can get it under 1moa, 5 shots it’ll run about 1.5, but given the thin profile I don’t often push it beyond that, but I did out of curiosity. Other factors I believe were at play were mirage, which I was fighting quite a bit, as well as my shoulder tenderizing a bit. First shot was the one behind the Hornady overlay and that one I completely yanked, had my trigger finger a bit too “ready” if that’s the best way to put it lol, I omitted that one since I wanted to measure the rifle, not myself and I knew that one was my fault.

Shots aren’t numbered in order of when they were fired, but do these thinner barrels just open up all-over when they get hot? I was expecting more vertical stringing and am interested by these results. Is there any way I can identify how much of this is mirage vs how much is thermal shift? There were points where I had to sit back for a couple seconds to let the mirage clear up since the target was actually that blurry in the scope. I don’t plan on ever actually running the barrel this hot again, just wanted to see how it behaves and what to expect under high temps.

Bullets used were Hornady Match 178gr ELDM.

Wheeler FAT torque wrench

I broke 3 different T10 bits while trying to install a 20MOA scope rail on my rifle at 15 in. - Lb. Now I’m wondering if the wrench settings are somehow off. I’ve used the same wrench for several years without a problem. Has anyone else ever had this issue before?

R700 actions

I’m looking to build a rifle but I’m stuck between actions. I’m looking at the stiller tac 30 and the defiance ruckus tactical. Does anyone have any links to somewhere I can read for reasons to get one or the other? Specs wise they seem relatively close except the stiller has the sako extractor which is nice. Thanks in advance.

Idea: Bartlein or Kreiger custom 18.5” 6.5 creedmore barrel McMillan stock OTB suppressor

Maybe a new build?

I have this extra Colt that I was thinking of making it into something for distance? I have a DPMS that I love that’s fun to shoot that’s my favorite gas gun. It’s never been fired either, just sits in the safe. Thought it would be interesting to learn how to mod it a bit too, more stuff to learn.

Tripod question

Hey! I have seen some posts where you can make a flat wood piece to throw a front bag on, and I am wanting to do that.

but, what are some good budget tripod options? I dont need anything crazy just want to run the wood and my front bag and practice off of it at different heights, as I dont have access to a full barricade.

Rifle advice

Hi all, looking for advice on a rifle that can shoot in multiple scenarios pretty well. Will likely do more target than anything else. Also want something in 6.5 CM. I like the look and lightweight of Sig Cross but seen some negative reviews. It'll be my first rifle in these categories. I am also open to comments on the difference between bolt and gas rifles. Budget is between 2 and 3k

Muzzle velocity

I have a Remington 700 SPS Tactical AAC-SD in .308win with a 20” barrel 5R w/ 1 in 10” twist. The ammo I’m doping with is hornady eldx 178 gr. Anyone with a 20” barrel and shooting this ammo want to share their muzzle velocity?

New and need some guidance on mounting my Arken Optic to my new CZ 457.

Newbie here. Apologies for back to back posts. I am trying to mount my Arken Optics SH-4J 6-24X50 to my CZ 457 Varmint MTR.

This optic was previously mounted to my AR with Arken's Rigid Precision Mount (34mm & 20 MOA)

The optic:

The mount:

What are my options for mounting this optic to my CZ 457?

EDIT: Also, if someone could clarify it the 20 MOA angle is necessary, that would be great. Thanks.

I picked up a CZ 457 Varmint MTR for $750. How'd I do?

I've only been shooting for about 6 months. My first was an AR but I really started enjoying precision more and the AR just isn't built for that. Not to mention, I couldn't afford the ammo to practice as much as I wanted.

Long story short, I wanted a 22LR because my longest range is 200yd and the ammo is cheaper. I had my eye on the CZ 457 ProVarmint but the guy at the show only had the MTR and we made a deal. I got it for $750. How'd I do?

Promising Early Group

We know PIGs (Professionally Instructed Gunmen) and HOGs (Hunters of Gunmen), I now introduce Promising Early Groups!! (PEGs)😂😂

73gr Hornady Match 223 Rem at approx 2766. Barrel (Bartlein 24” #14) has less than 100rds on it and is still speeding up. I have a magneto (no Garmin for me for a bit still) but didn’t want to mount it up on this trip and cause any POA/I offset while I’m still just getting rounds on the barrel until it seasons/settles in.

223 is under appreciated in bolt actions and a 16ish-lb 223 target/PRS Tac/heavy varminting rig is just a bundlea hoots.

Remove bolt when spray painting?

I’m inclined to think that paint on the bolt will not noticeably impact the performance of the rifle. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Edit: Question has been answered, I’ll be removing the bolt and taping/block off the action. Thanks for all the feedback.

I plan to add my own chassis, proof barrel, trigger, and shoot suppressed; Should I just get an extremely used CZ 457 and throw away everything but the action? Or buy new?

I plan to build a 22lr rifle; I' know the chassis I want, proof research pre-fit barrels, threaded so I can shoot suppressed, and trigger.

That only leaves me with needing the action; and it's either rimx or 457 pro varmint action. So $1,100 vs $550.

Is there any downside in a very old or very heavily used 457 varmint action? It shouldn't effect accuracy at all, right?

Side question: Are the MTR models just a better barrel over the pro varmint? Or does the bolt have improvement on it too?

Help me spend my money

TLDR: I got $2k Canadian (so no midway usa deals) I am wanting to throw at gear. I feel it is “needed” to buy atleast a higher end Athlon product. Do upgrade my scope? Or get missing gear, which is some combo of Kestrel, Bino’s, Tripod or Range finder.

I got some money burning a hole in my pocket that I was thinking about throwing at gear for prs, occasional walks through the woods searching for food and just long range in general. I semi recently got sucked into the PRS Rimfire world and have been slowly acquiring gear as my budget allows. Although sofar that was just getting my rifle decently setup and making sure I had a good bag ect. So I do not currently have the following. -Bino’s -tripod -range finder -kestrel -higher quality case -shooting mat

I know a lot of this gear is optional/easily borrowed at match’s. However I would like to eventually have all the gear I might possibly need. Do you have an order you would recommend purchasing these in?

I have about $2000 CAD to spend currently and while I would like to eventually get all that gear, I am fine with saving to buy better gear. A good chunk of that $2000 also came from selling a scope from a prize table that Athlon so graciously donated. I know it may be frowned upon to sell prizes, but I am on a budget and the funds are going towards gear I do not have and was planning on prioritizing a nice Athlon purchase or two so I still kind of have my “prize table gear” from those lovely folks.

My initial thought was the Athlon Midas G2 pro Bino’s with a Tripod and an Athlon 1 Mile range finder. That would be about $1100 + Tripod cost. Which I am open to suggestions on. Or would I be better off grabbing a different combo of gear? One of the more skilled local competitors recommended I get range finding binoculars, which would end up blowing most of my current budget. I like that the Midas Pro bino’s have a reticle. I also am not sure how needed the 2-1 features of range finding binoculars when most of the time I use them I will have known distances.

A different debate I had was to just throw the budget at an Athlon Ares ETR or a Cronus, as I did win a scope, so upgrading my rifles scope kind of makes sense.

I’d love to hear what the more experienced folks here think of my rambly question.

Edit to add: Current setup -Cz457 in a XRS Chassis. -Athlon Helos 4-20 Mil with bubble level -Ibi 22” 0.92” eley chamber -Stock trigger with yodave spring -Mdt Grnd pod -schmeidum heavy fill

I own a chronograph as my most recent purchase. I use Geo Ballistics and Apples weather app in place of a Kestrel currently.

Question about 416 hellfire and 375 cheytac

Are these custom rounds? With custom brass? I’m fairly certain they can’t be bought all put together. Is the 416 a custom round seated in a barrett case?

Long Range Starter Guide

Long Range Starter Guide (Google Sheet)

I'm a little hesitant to post this since a fellow long range comrade shared a similar spreadsheet. But I'm near finished working on this and it would be a waste to not share it now.

This is a consolidation of recommendations with combined elements from the FAQ and LBP's First Long Range Rifle Buyer's Guide. I formatted the sheet to be easy to read on a mobile device.

I got burned out trying to make a spreadsheet of "everything" before, but since I had most of the data already, I simplified it to include only long range/PRS style shooting. So no, this guide does not include every action, chassis, or optic on the market. It is only the most commonly recommended and not recommended items.

As far as the actual recommendations go, I based it on community sentiment, reviews, and personal experience. I think it is inevitable that there will be disagreements. I put in a Pros/Cons list for each rifle and optic to help people understand the why and why not of the recommendation. Obviously, I did not fill out Pros/Cons for everything yet.

Feel free to use it, not use it, share it, ignore it, love it, hate it, or give feedback.
