Talk me out of bergara #2

So my Bergara 300 PRC is out to get rebarreled currently and I’m looking to get something in the neighborhood of a 6.5 PRC possibly smaller for 800 yards plus shots on targets and some mid size critter hunting. I like vertical grips/semi target stocks and good factory setups. With that being said throw me any recommendations in similar price range to the trusty 1000 bergara and if you have a caliber you think is just nifty as hell suggest that too

Help me understand the use cases for kestrel vs ballistic calculator integrated range finders

So I'm very new to long range. It seems that a kestrel, while not strictly necessary, is a very common tool in the toolbox. However, with the seemingly increasing availability and quality of rangefinders with integrated ballistic calculators, are people moving toward a single device that does everything? For example, if you spent the money and got something like the upcoming Vector X, would you even need a kestrel? What are people typically doing in this arena?

Human bipod - is this a legit technique?

https://preview.redd.it/y3pgpjyxcu5d1.png?width=2347&format=png&auto=webp&s=fea0153f994bc8663020087ea2190f3d1aeb1254

Saw this on Youtube today - Florida SWAT sniper takes out a bank robber by shooting off his buddy's shoulder and through a monitor. I know absolutely nothing about LE/MIL shooting applications, but I would've imagined a SWAT unit probably has a shooting tripod available. Is this a legit technique they practice?

Seekins Hit Pro vs Sig across PRS

Really torn on my first out of the box PRS gun. I’ve gone back and forth on this, and I’ve narrowed it down to Seekins Havok Hit Pro and the Sig Cross PRS both in 6.5CM. If anyone’s had any on hand experience it’s greatly appreciated!

Can I compare barrel quality across different calibers? (AR15 question)

This is a newb question so please be patient. Is it okay to compare barrel quality from reputable manufacturers across different calibers?

For example, let's say I have a:

  1. 18" White Oak Krieger in 223 wylde,
  2. 18" Compass Lake Douglas in 223 wylde,
  3. 18" Proof Research in 6mm ARC, and
  4. 18" Craddock Precision Bartlein in 6mm ARC,

At 400+ yards, can I compare a 556 caliber barrel against a 6mm ARC barrel to determine the quality of a barrel maker, and can a 6mm ARC barrel from a reputable company tell me about the quality of their 223 barrel? Or do I need to compare similar caliber barrels against one another?

Atlas (dumb) questions

I’m considering the Atlas bt65 nc cal.

Can this be folded fully backwards or forward when folded at rest?

I want the option to keep it backwards and out of the way if possible. …and the option to have it forward if I’m on the foregrip.

Thanks!

Projectile Length Question

Is there a way to find a Hornady projectile length for factory ammo, if it’s not available on the Hornady product page? I am setting up a ballistic calculator for a new 7PRC rifle, and I can’t find the projectile length anywhere online. How would I go about finding that? Specific product in question is the 7mm PRC 160g Outfitter round.

Sanity Check Request

So I reload for my 6BR Norma using 105 Hybrids, Varget and CCI 450’s.

I’d like to get set up to reload for my sons AR (scoped 20” service rifle essentially).

I ordered another Forster Ultra Mic die in 223 and a 500 ct of 77 gr SMK’s. We already have an old Bonanza FL die.

A work up from 22.5 to 24.0 of Varget at mag length should net me something in the 1 MOA or less range? That seems like the sweet spot for 77 SMK’s with Varget at mag length.

Ultimately looking for something he can play with at our local club out to 600, using the same powder and primer as my BR.

Best caliber to go with when rebarreling a Savage 12 LRP?

I have a Savage 12 LRP in .260 Remington (The Betamax of the VHS wars compared to 6.5 Creedmoor), and I've been thinking of getting it rebarreled in a more modern caliber, as well as adding threads so I can use my .30 cal. suppressor.

Application is recreational target shooting at 1,000 - 1,250 yards.

The Urban Rifleman has a fairly wide selection of calibers for their replacement barrels. I was just planning to go with 6.5 Creedmoor and call it a day, but it seemed worthwhile to check if any of the other calibers were notably better for this application.

I do a fair bit of reloading, if that helps.

The available calibers I'm looking at are:

  • 6 Creedmoor
  • 6BR

-6 BRX

  • 6XC
  • 6 Dasher
  • 6MM GT
  • 308 Match
  • 6.5 Creedmoor

New barrel? Or new rifle?

Bought this baddie used for a great price last year.
Tikka t3x stainless - 7mmRM w/ muzzle break
MDT ESS chassis
added a Tract Toric UHD 4.5-30x56

It's an absolute tack driver. However, the barrel heats up quickly after 3 shots, and I spend more time waiting for it to cool down at the range than I'd like.

Question for the group. Should I buy a heavy barrel? Or should I take the action and barrel out, put it back in its normal stock to use as a hunting rifle, sell the ESS chassis and start on a new build with a lighter caliber and heavy barrel?

I like the idea of keeping it, since it's a great rifle. But I don't really need two PRS rifles. I do hunt, and I have another tikka t3x in .243, Wby Vanguard in .308, and Ruger guide gun in .338WM. I like the idea of having a longer range capable rifle, and since I have made up some hand loads it makes sense to keep it. I have the money but I like to optimize my cost/fun ratio and storage space as much as I can. I generally feel better when I get a good deal on a workhorse of a rifle, than I do spending more on the flashy new thing that I feel I have to be extra careful with.

What would you do?

Shooting in the rain

I've been very lucky up until now that only a few spots of rain have ever touched my Bergara B14HMR, and a dry off, rubdown, and oil kept it ok. I know I'm a little anal when it comes to cleaning after shooting (compared to the replies when I posted on here about cleaning frequencies) but...

We've got 1000 yds booked for this Friday and the weather is looking bad. Don't want to cancel the day as been really looking forward to it but it's the unknown that's giving me undue stress. What's the plan if it gets soaked? Is it a full on remove stock and tend to every nook and cranny or just dry off or... help me oh wise and experienced shooty pals!!!

Can anyone help me identify the exact make/model of this spotting scope? These are the only markings on the scope. Google hasn't been really helpful.

How will this do for long range?

My neighbor wanted something more practical, and that his wife ( all 90l s of her) could shoot. So he asked if I'd trade him an AR9 for this. He kept asking if I was sure, like he was getting the better deal, I asked him the same. Regardless were both happy. It's a Ruger M77 in .338WM. came with dies an unopened 1lbs of powder, box of factory ammo, box of 225&250 grn and a bunch of brass, and a bag of handloafs. I have no knowledge of this round, other than it's a mule. Plans for a better optic and chassis. Anyone know who makes a chassis for this. I'm wanting to get into ELS for fun and figure this will do the job. Also have 6.5CM and a couple others that should reach out pretty far. Thanks for any information.

What is a reasonable performance for a budget to mid-level factory AR

Just a thought experiment and as I know very little about shooting I was looking for some opinions. Take an AR, let's say the Springfield Saint but any $1000 equivalent AR will do, and put a $300 scope of your choosing on it. 16 inch barrel, 5.56 NATO and let's say 1:8 Twist. Factory ammo. What is the MOA at 100 and 200 yards that an average shooter can expect to achieve?
