The cartridge is often referred to simply as .22 LR and various rifles, pistols, revolvers, and even some smoothbore shotguns have been manufactured in this caliber.
The cartridge originated from the Flobert BB Cap of 1845 through the .22 Smith & Wesson cartridge of 1857, and was developed by the American firearms manufacturer J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company in 1887 by combining the casing of the .22 Long with the 40-grain (2.6 g) bullet of the .22 Extra Long. For many decades, it has been a very popular cartridge around the world.
Virtually every manufacturer of cartridge firearms makes at least one model chambering it, and this has been true for more than a century. The .22 Long Rifle and related cartridges (.22 Short, .22 Long and .22 Extra Long) use a heeled bullet, which means that the bullet is the same diameter as the case, and has a narrower "heel" portion that fits in the case.

Basically, I'm just needing a small revolver that can use snake shot. The least expensive, the better. I'm really only needing it for snakes, and to sting the asses of aggressive wild dogs/coyote.
I have a rifle already for larger things, but I'm looking at a low cost revolver that won't break my bank and allow me to not need a lot of accuracy as I only have the one arm.
As far as "dogs" a lot of neighbors have dogs that run wild, and are extremely aggressive. I don't want to kill the dogs, but I would like to sting them a bit to train them to stay away. I figure snake shot would be ok for that.
I considered getting a co2 bb gun, airsoft, or paintball, but a decent one that is dependable would already put me at "cheap 22lr" levels.
I'm in Florida btw. A may have the worlds most badass maltipoo, but he isnt tougher than a moccasin or rattler bite. And while I'm 6'7" 300lbs, (with one function arm/leg, and a ton of concussions) me and my lil monster can only do so much. Lol. So, I'd like a small level of safety while spending the next few months in the middle if nowhere.
Thanks in advance!
Not all of my twenty-two’s, but definitely my favorites
What is your .22lr Semi-Auto lubrication methodology?
I'm starting to think that less is more.
Seems like the more oil I use, the more build-up of crud. When crud does get built up more oil does seem to help.
I shoot a lot of Norma Tac-22 and it seems like after 1,000 rounds it almost looks like dirty sand is built up in all the nooks and crannies.
What say all you about lubing 22s?
Thanks!
I've got an old Sterling 22 from the 70s or 80s and despite the quality of most pocket pistols from that era, it seems to be pretty solidly built and is made of steel instead of zamak. With that being said, I've heard that Federal punch can be rough on small 22s. The manual itself for the Sterling says not to use hyper velocity ammo, and federal punch technically falls into the high velocity range, but I was wondering about the lighter bullet and actual energy transfer perhaps being more important in this question than velocity. Thanks.
I have a tippmann on the way and I’m looking for some smaller companies to try a suppressor. I’m not looking for any normal names you’d see, I’ve seen what the first two pages of google pulls up. What have you tried that not many people have heard of that you liked?? TIA
Edit: I meant smaller companies as in small business owners
My instinct tells me just buy a Vortex. My wallet says get a budget scope.
My little boy needs some practice at the bench punching holes, so I got him a Ruger American Rimfire and 2k rounds of Aguila Ammo. I would like enough scope that he can see bullet holes at 25 maybe 50 yards- so 4.5-14x, 3-15x, 3-18x. I’m not opposed to 5-25x.
Every YT review for 22 scopes are NRL setups that are out of my budget.
I would like to be under $200. I’m ok with used if it has a warranty like Vortex.
Inputs?

The hammer on my savage arms precision 64 is not striking the rim of the cartridge. Anyone have any suggestions what to do?
I installed the red dot sight of my Beretta Neos 22 pistol to the carbine barrel of the conversion kit.
Do you all think it's too small, or should I get a dedicated, larger one instead?
Looking for suggestions for a tactical style .22 as my first rifle. Its main use will be for small game hunting and plinking. Would like to add a lr scope/ suppressor in the future so a barrel that is ready for one is a plus. Some of the few i have heard about are the tippman m4 elite, M&P 15-22, and the HK416. they are all around the same price range but i just have a hard time deciding which one to get.
I am looking forward to purchasing one of these and running it suppressed. Initially I don’t plan to buy an optic so I lean towards the Tx22 (standard) but who knows maybe someday down the road I will throw an optic on. Pricing is all about the same or not enough to make me feel like I need to get one or the other. Any insights or other options in .22 you love, I would love to hear it!
I'm looking into buying a Taurus 63, but I've heard some conflicting things about Taurus as a company. I hear a lot of bad things about their handguns, but I can't find anything negative about their Model 63, or other rifles they've produced, and it seems that most Taurus complaints are recent.
I would try and buy a real Winchester Model 63 or the Miroku 63, but I can't find the Winchester at a decent price, and I can't find the Miroku at all. The Taurus 63 is appealing to me because it's pretty cheap and most of them are in good condition, with little to no complaints. I'd appreciate any insight anyone could offer.
Anyone know if there are any speed loaders compatible with the HK branded 22LR MP5 mags?
Long term lurker, this might be my first post here.
My Tikka T1x 16" factory barrel in a modified KRG X-Ray T3x stock (lots of fun modifying!). Other mods include YoDave trigger spring; ZP Titanium firing pin, Sako rubber bolt knob, Talleys 20MOA rail, MKM picatinny scope level, MDT M-lock weights, MDT Grn-Pod bipod, DPT rimfire suppressor, KRG ARCA rail, cheapy but good Arken rings and an old but still good Bushnell XRS scope.
Any body know where to get a couple from a place that dont charge double?
Looking for budget friendly red dot recommendations. Never threw one on a pistol.. getting a range toy going! Also any other recommendations. Been shooting 9mm for 3 years now standard/ night sights, first time owning a 22lr as well. Thanks!
Instead of building your own Ruger 1022, can you buy a modded Ruger?
So I pulled the trigger and bought an MDT Oryx chassis for my CZ457. Then I realized it does not have a sling stud, so I decided to buy an arca rail.
My problem is I have a Harris S-BRM bipod. Without having to buy a new bipod, what kind of adapters are there for this bipod to an arca rail? I know i can just get an M-LOK sling stud but I would like to be able yo attach it to the arca rail instead. Also, I would like it yo be quick release.
Recent purchase. I was able to shoot a .560” group around 40 yards suppressed. Really loving this thing.
Looking for a bolt action with a synthetic stock and a 16" threaded barrel for a lightweight quiet hunting rifle shooting cci quiets supressed. I havent found anything exactly like this but im thinking of getting a Ruger American Rimfire since we have a lot of 10/22 mags and getting it cut down and threaded.
My dad's inherited Steven's 87a, and his recent pawn shop find, a Springfield Model 15.
The 87a was my granddads and it is still as accurate as it was in the 40s. Classic Gill Gun, such a great shooter.
The Model 15 was in rough shape when Dad bought it, but he spent a couple of days soaking and brushing it. It's still a little rough on the surface, but it gives it that old-gun character. We were worried about the barrel, but after ~150rds at the indoor range, we had no issues and no tumbling/keyholes. Our indoor range only goes to 20yrds, and the sights are definitely set for 50+yrds, but we managed to shoot groups that fit inside a 50cent piece by burying the front post and putting that at a 6oclock hold for POA. All in all, for a ~75-80 year old gun, she's still rocking.
Can anyone tell me if this ammo runs thru a 457 pro varmit? I have seen where others post they sometimes have issues I'm just looking for knowledge from someone with first hand experience
I need someone to tell me why building a Charger is a BAD idea. I built/upgraded a 10/22 (my first) earlier this year, and really like the platform. I have only recently been turned on to some of the Charger builds here (and in some other 10/22 groups) and think it'd be fun to build one up as a host for my first suppressor and to use for plinking/truck gun/range toy.
Lots of sales going on now, so I'd like to jump on some lower prices and was thinking of picking up a Brownell's receiver and bolt as a starting point (with a plan for an Enoch Deep Six Chassis, 8-9" barrel, .22 can and folding brace).
For those more experienced with this platform - is it worthwhile endeavor? I've seen some post recently where new (seemingly high-quality) builds are having issues with failure to feed, etc - will I be endlessly frustrated with a charger as a fun-gun? Pro's? Cons (besides my wallet)?
If it helps, I've got another gun on my want list - a bit more expensive (an LTT Beretta 1301 Mod 2) - which would likely see less use (but is every bit as cool). Would my money be better spent put towards that Beretta instead of a Charger build? I get this may be an un-answerable question, but I'd appreciate some thoughts before I spend money unnecessarily.
In general, are tuners used in 22 competition? If so, who makes them? And what scientific testing has been done to prove their efficacy?
Has anyone done this? Since the 8” barreled pistols have been discontinued for a while and mostly dried up, I’m wondering if just buying a 16” one on sale and having the barrel chopped and threaded down to 8” or 9” would work the same. I’m not asking about all the legal shit. Or advice on another gun, only the M&P 15-22, since I have a 16” already and can share spare parts and mags.
But as far as the internals and springs, is everything else the same? I think they are… I’ve also seen where there was an issue with the bolts on the pistols, so I figure since that isn’t an issue with the 16” I’d just work from that.
Edit to add: it’ll be suppressed.
