The cartridge is often referred to simply as .22 LR and various rifles, pistols, revolvers, and even some smoothbore shotguns have been manufactured in this caliber.
The cartridge originated from the Flobert BB Cap of 1845 through the .22 Smith & Wesson cartridge of 1857, and was developed by the American firearms manufacturer J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company in 1887 by combining the casing of the .22 Long with the 40-grain (2.6 g) bullet of the .22 Extra Long. For many decades, it has been a very popular cartridge around the world.
Virtually every manufacturer of cartridge firearms makes at least one model chambering it, and this has been true for more than a century. The .22 Long Rifle and related cartridges (.22 Short, .22 Long and .22 Extra Long) use a heeled bullet, which means that the bullet is the same diameter as the case, and has a narrower "heel" portion that fits in the case.

I heard several different opinions on how often the barrel should be cleaned. I'm just curious what people on here think. How often should I be brushing/swabbing the barrel.
I’m looking into getting a bolt action 22lr for precision bench rest shooting. I’m turned off my the CZ’s and others and their 5 round magazines along with the price, I don’t want to spend the day reloading.
I realize 10/22’s are not the answer for precision either. Can an RPRR make the cut? Savage,CZ, Tikka, Bergara? Trying to stay sub $800 on the rifle. Thoughts?
Does anyone know of a 22LR pistol and rifle with cross compatible magazines??
I'm looking for my first bolt action .22LR. Will be used for backyard plinking and matches at my local club out to 100 yards. Will have about $1k to spend on gun. My research has led me towards the CZ 457 MTR or the Bergara BMR-X. I can't seem to find the CZ actually for sale anywhere. Some things I'd like to have: -Threaded barrel -Adjustable cheek comb -Arca rail or ability to add arca rail
What should I be looking at?
Hey everyone,
I’m in the market for a left-handed .22 bolt action rifle and I'm currently deciding between the Tikka T1x and the CZ457 Varmint. This would be a plinking/hunting setup as I don't currently compete in matches but if I do in the future I would be able to build another rifle. I plan to use it with a suppressor, which is where I need some input.
If I go with the CZ457, I’d either need to get it threaded or purchase an aftermarket barrel. I’m looking at Acculite barrels for the upgrade, as the high-end options are a bit beyond my budget. If you have other suggestions please let me know.
So, I have a couple of questions for the community:
Thanks in advance for any insights!

Anybody have any thoughts on the Springfield model 2020? I just heard they were making a rimfire and it looks beautiful but I’m hearing that the accuracy is horrible. Does anybody own one that will offer some input? Did they fix the issue?
I have had very little issues with my build until my last range day. I took the carrier apart and saw the extractor was a bit off. I took a new one I have apart and this is the comparison. New on the left old on the right. At first I thought the notch was the issue but then I realized it's overall worn down. I do have about 5-6k rounds on this already so maybe it's time to change it out.
What do you use mainly use your 22 pistols/rifles for? Hunting, prepping, plinking? Would love to hear different use cases and where this caliber falls in the line up for you
I have been shooting USPSA and Steel Challenge for about a year and decided to try out my sons M&P 15-22 and it was a blast. I shot it along with a 2011 so massively different guns but my times were comparable. The odd part about it was that it started having some random stovepipes on the 2nd stage and never would extract the last round on the “unload and show clear” command. The round would come right out with my fingernail so I shot the remaining stages and just manually removed the last round. I thought this was due to the gun just being dirty and figured I would give it a thorough cleaning when I got home.
When I got home I pulled it apart and went to check the extractor and saw that it was gone. No clue when it left the party but I’m thinking it was in the 2nd stage. The most surprising part was that I fired at least 100 rounds without an extractor and it still ran 95%.
I have a new Volquartsen bolt along with an extractor, spring and plunger on order now to fix it up and have a spare bolt in my bag for future matches.
I had my doubts about this little gun but I have to say I am thoroughly impressed. I tossed a different grip on it and a cheap PSA trigger and it’s a dream to shoot.
I have a AR-15 chambered in 223 Wylde. I have been wanting to get the "CMMG Bravo .22 Conversion Kit", I have noticed on the site that because of 223 Wylde not being milspec they cannot guarantee function. Does anyone have any experience in trying this conversion?
I recently made a post about the bolt shroud ("bolt cap" as CZ calls it) being plastic on my 2024 left hand 457 varmint and, fairly enough, people pointed out that it's a non-stressed part and should not matter.
After looking more closely, I realized that the plastic magazine well insert for the 22lr versions has a thin feature at the top that acts as the ejector. This seems crazy to me, it's a very small protrusion that sees repeated impact loads and is critical to the functionality of the firearm. I have never seen a plastic ejector on ANY other firearm. My Ruger American rimfire that's nearly half the cost has a metal bolt shroud and metal ejector...
I did run some tests by wedging something else in the magwell to keep the mag in place while cycling the action so that the further back metal ejector is used, and it worked fine. I have no idea why they would include an ejector on the plastic part. There are many posts about the 457 having ejection issues and there's a recent thread below showing a broken plastic ejector. Really bothers me for a "premium" rimfire bolt gun

I got a Mossberg715t as a gift a few years ago and the magazine release finally broke off. So I got a new metal one off of eBay but I can’t figure out how to put it back on can anybody help out??
I have a Smith and Wesson 15-22. Looking to add a scope to it. Ive read about AO or side focus being important. My price range is around 150 or less. I am looking between these 2 models. Both are around the same price. I know the 4-12 is way over kill magnification for a 22 but it does have side focus. Im not sure which one to buy. Any insight? Mainly use the gun for rabbits around the farm. I shoot from 15 yards to 60 yards. The Athlon with side focus is longer & heavier. Can you help me choose which to order? Thanks!
Picked this up over the weekend!
Help ! 22lr or 12 ga ?
Edit: I do believe the shotgun is more versatile than the 22, but i have doubts regarding the amount of ammo. Is a 12 ga with x amount of rounds ( less than 100) better than a 22 with 3x amount of rounds (around 300) ?
By the way, the 22lr does not have scope, because of budget.
I've found this community on Reddit and I suspect most of you are Americans, which is great to help me out since you have a lot of experience with firearms. Basically, I don’t live in the USA and in the country where I live the gun laws are extremely strict and incredibly stupid, making it extremely difficult to obtain a gun ownership license and almost impossible to get a carry permit (even though the majority of the population voted in favor of gun liberalization, the leftist government simply screwed the citizens over and criminalized guns).
Anyway, here’s my question: I have the possibility of buying a gun abroad and bringing it to my country, but given my budget, my options for guns are very limited. So, I’m torn between two types of guns and I’d like you to tell me, from your perspective, which would be better. What i mean as better is: if you had to have a gun and only a gun for everything, like hunting (most for small games like pigeons, ducks and rabbits, rarely for big games like hogs, etc), sport, survival, security and SHTF, which one would you pick ? Take into account the whole context i described.
OPTION 1: Low quality double-barrel (side by side) 12-ga shotgun + 25 empty full-metal (brass) 12-ga shotgun shells + 100 cartridge reloading supplies (gunpowder, wads, pellets)
(BUT, FOR THIS OPTION, I HAVE THE POSSIBILITY OF BUYING RELOADING SUPPLIES IN MY OWN COUNTRY AT THE COST OF USD $0.80 PER SHELL)
OPTION 2: Low quality .22lr bolt or semi-auto action rifle + 500 .22lr cartridges
(BUT, FOR THIS OPTION, I HAVE NO WAY TO BUY AMMO IN MY COUNTRY. TO BUY AMMO, I NEED TO TRAVEL THE EQUIVALENT OF 930 MILES – SOMETHING LIKE GOING FROM HOUSTON, TX to CHICAGO, IL, or to DENVER, CO, or to TAMPA, FL. DESPITE THAT, THERE I CAN BUY .22LR ROUNDS FOR USD $0.26 PER ROUND.)
INFORMATION: I'm limited (for my budget) to get 100 cartridge supplies for the 12 ga or 500 rounds of the 22lr for now. But in the case of the 12 ga, each month i earn enough to get some 20 cartridge supplies of the 12 ga that i can buy where i live, differently from the 22lr. (The cost of the 12 ga supply is 3 times the cost of one round of 22lr.)
Sorry if i was not very clear !
Anyway, thank you, guys !!!
Does tippmann M4-22 LR pro would take Airsoft handguard and barrel nut? Mine came with 6 inch mlok plastic handguard. Any advice is appreciated.
