Buffer

I've been trying to tune in the buffer and gas on an ar-10 for a while (mostly ordering and waiting on parts and waiting on money to order more parts) and then this shows up. I wish I could trade my AR-10 straight across for an M1A because the simplicity is 🤌🏽

183 series accuracy after some mods.

https://imgur.com/a/eTYCwSF

The album shows 12 groups I fired at 50 yards with .223 55gr ball ammo today in no particular order. They tightened up a bit as I got the sights dialed in and focused on trigger control.

List of stuff I did to the rifle:

Chopped barrel to 16" and recrowned

Replaced recoil spring (factory strength)

Wilson Combat 1911 recoil buffer

Accuracy Systems .045" gas bushing

Tech Sights rr200 rear sight

Samson A-tm stock and Hannibal rail

Reduced power sear spring

John Masen front sight/flash hider/bayonet lug combo device

I probably should have just bought a new one but I had fun putting this one together and making it unique. I'll probably play around with the other gas bushings when the weather gets nicer and maybe chop the barrel to 14.5" and pin+weld the muzzle device. As you can see it's no precision instrument but I can live with 2" groups at 50 yards for a range toy.

Considering buying myself a mini but I'm concerned about performance

I live in Washington currently and have saved up more dough than I've ever even seen in my life, but what I haven't seen in a long time is an ar-15 on a gun shop wall. Mini-14s and 30s are not banned though, fortunately, and I've kinda always wanted one anyways because they're cool. What I'm concerned about is accuracy. If I buy one of these rifles, I want to know it's as accurate as they come, and I've heard that they can be very inconsistent from year to year, and significantly less accurate than a decent ar-15 at worst. What serials/features should I look for to make sure I'm not dropping a bunch of money on a gun with sub-par performance? It won't be my first rifle, but my first semi-auto, and I'm definitely not an expert on these things. Any advice is appreciated:)

Thoughts on Archangel (not sparta) precision stock?

Can anyone who has Archangel precision stock share their experience with it? I have 585 ranch and looking to upgrade it, but don't want assaulty/bubba look that comes with ATI or sparta. AT-M is an option, but I don't have enough gold chains to pity the fools yet :)

Advice on Mini-14 modifications?

Hello,

I have a Mini 14 that has sat in my safe somewhat neglected for a few years. I was interested in getting it set up with a few modifications to give it a new lease on life.

  • I have read that older models have accuracy issues. My serial number starts with 195 so I think it is from 1999. Is that within the time range of problems?

  • Is the Accu Strut a worthwhile upgrade? I don't know if my barrel profile is Thin or Thick. It seems thick to me.

  • For those who use the A-TM stocks, are you happy with your purchase? I wasn't sure if the stock was rigid or comfortable to use. It definitely looks cool.

  • I have read conflicting information here about adjustable gas blocks and bushings. Is there a consensus on how useful they are if I am not planning to put a suppressor on it?

My FIL's Mini is a Jam-O-Matic.

Am I crazy, or is his feed ramp really canted?

Stock swap

I have a 300blk mini 14 tactical and I’m wanting to swap over to a wooden stock as apposed to the synthetic, is there a specific stock I need or are they all interchangeable?

Anyone know of any aftermarket companies making better pistol grips for the Mini folding stocks?

Forend liner question

I just got a Choate M4 telescoping stock and it did not ship with either the mag well reinforcement bracket or the forend liner. From what I'm reading, synthetic stocks may not need the reinforcement as they're rigid enough without, but the liner is of course needed and a safety feature. I'm going to get a new one for this replacement stock so I can leave the original alone (quicker to swap back for any warranty repairs, etc.) and in searching for one I see there are two models:
https://www.gunpartscorp.com/products/291530a
https://www.gunpartscorp.com/products/291530b

This is for a 5889 585 series Tactical (not Ranch Rifle) that did ship with the synthetic stock. Does that distinction matter at all? Are these liners any different based on sub-model of Mini?

To add to it, possibly, the Choate is also labeled as "WILL NOT WORK ON MODEL 583 OR NEWER" but it clearly does. I'm just wondering what liner will fit a 585 barreled action with an aftermarket stock that claims it's 181-583...or any liner will work.

TIA

14 years and they still can't get it right?

585 series mini 14. I mounted an over bore bipod mount on the Samson picatinny rail which required getting high scope mounts to clear the bipod mount. Finally get it to the range and had to twist the adjuster to the end of its travel to get in the bullseye, and that was at the bottom. Rather than live with that I tore everything off and tried to put the Ruger scope mounts on the bare receiver and give up on the scout position. Only problem is both left side scallops were crooked and the rear scallop was at least 1/8" lower than the front, making it impossible to seat the mount securely. Went hunting for information and found posts from 2010 complaining about the same issue. I have a call and email into Ruger but if their solution is for me to ship the entire rifle through an FFL, wait months, then pay transfer, shipping fees and background checks a second time I'm just going to mount the receiver picatinny rail and use that to mount the scope there with lower rings. But how hard is it to make a fool proof jig that accurately punches the scallops in 14 years? I love the mini but c'mon Ruger.

Update: finally, after trying for three days by email, voice mail and calls to customer service I picked the AR556 option rather than the last option for anything else, which kicks you out if not answered in about three minutes. Got passed to a very nice woman who told me how crazy busy they are but not why, she had no idea. After explaining the issue she said i have to send the entire rifle back to them and that it would be 6 weeks minimum before they'd send it back. Screw that. I'll call them next year and see if things have slowed down. In the meantime I'll mount the provided picatinny rail over the receiver and use other scope rings to mount the scope.

They really are in the Stone Age in their communications, though. No database to keep track of whether people have called in or when. No music on hold. The same messages repeated every 30 seconds which gets really annoying after waiting for someone for 20 minutes. Pitiful.

Does anybody have a review?

I'm specifically worried about using this with set screws since I don't have a drill press available. I'd prefer to have it pinned on like the factory sight on my 181. I'm really only interested in it for looks since someone shared the mapartsinc combo flash hider/bayonet lug but I don't want a bayonet lug or I would probably get that instead. But if anyone has experience with the ASI flash hider here id love to hear about it.

Thanks Guys

I posted earlier about two different mini 14s I was going to look at. Well after all the help I picked the right one. Serial # 584-XXXXX. It came brand new in the box with everything for a little under 850 beans. If anyone knows anything about the mag id be interested in knowing

JARD Trigger MINI 14

I purchased three JARD triggers—one-pound and two three-pound Triggers—back in August and installed them shortly afterward.

Part Number: 1638

After installing two of the Triggers on my 580 Series Minis, I tested them by holding down the trigger and ensuring it would reset and then break. I did this for both triggers and finished the job by adding some gun grease.

I was very impressed with how crisp the trigger was, which was very comparable to the Geissele SD trigger on my AR.

This first week of November, I finally had a chance to take one out for a test at the Range. The first 20-round Ruger mag worked flawlessly, but after loading my second mag after two shots, the gun jammed. Upon further inspection, I found that the Disconnect broke, part number 1471.

The following week, I took my second trigger for a test run and had the same result; after the second mag, the same Disconnect broke in the same spot.

I reported the first issue to JARD, and they shipped me a disconnect without issue. The problem I have is that I can ask for a replacement for the second trigger, but it will likely fail, which may be due to the amount of material that holds the Disconnect in place.

I included some pictures so you can see the result.

I'm hoping that JARD will eventually release a fix for the issue. Any tips would be appreciated since I still have a trigger that has yet to be tested.

Thanks

It's almost complete

Chopped the barrel on my 183 series to 16.25", recrowned it, and installed my new combo muzzle device. The only things left for me to do are refinish the muzzle device to match the rifle and install a reduced diameter gas bushing. I'm hoping the rigidity of a shorter barrel combined with the reduced gas pressure from the bushing and heat sink effect from the Hannibal rail will help improve the accuracy a fair bit. I probably should have just bought one of the new ones but I'm pretty happy with how this one has turned out.

Mini 300 blackout

Does anyone have experience with a mini in 300 blkout shooting subs with a suppressor? I was shooting hornady 190 subs but they don’t cycle the action. Are there subs that will work or do need to get an adjustable gas block? The video I saw from Ruger said if you shoot subs with a suppressor it should cycle whole reason I bought the damn gun.

First day out with the new mini-14 !

First shots right out the box and it was dialed in. After about 100rds I noticed I wasn’t so accurate. When I got home I noticed the sight wiggling around like a joystick. Going to upgrade to the tech sights soon. Any recommendations on scopes or red dots? Definitely enjoying my purchase!
