This old guy is excited to see them again. Any other older pop punkers planning on going to the show Saturday?
Is there a local scene/group in Indy for those 35 and above into this genre?
I have listened to the new Champs album about 6 times through and I'm just not enjoying it. It really falls off in the second half for me. My first listen I could not get past the intro to half the songs. Am I the only one not enjoying this as much as past releases?
I found State Champs in 2013 right after the Finer Things release. I was skeptical but they had some hard hitting songs. That album later turned into one of my favorites of all time. This band was one of my first introductions to the new Pop Punk age with me finding Knuckle Puck, Real Friends, TSSF, The Wonder Years, Neck Deep, all around the same 2012-2013 era. I dove so deep into this band. Listening to the demos, acoustics on YouTube, I personally felt this band was the next TSSF. I've seen them 7 or 8 times, even VIP'd to meet them at the Masquerade when ATWAB came out. I have given every record a solid chance. But unfortunately I have not enjoyed every record all the way through. I am happy for the band's success. But I do not consider them a no skip band, as many people do. Just wanted to give my background before digging into this album. So bear with me as I go song by song and tell you what I think. I'd love to discuss opinions, these are mine.
The Constant: This song feels like it was revived from 2012 demo era Champs. The guitar is ringing in your ears the whole intro, while playing a slick melody. Derrick comes in hard with a catchy verse, leading to a chunky chorus. My head is bobbing every time I hear this. Ryan has a very nice bass slide in the chorus that I love. Actually his bass throughout the song is fire. I find myself singing this song at work even after only hearing it about 6 times or so. Probably 3/12 for me.
Silver Cloud: Really catchy single. I had this on repeat for a few weeks when it came out. I did find the little guitar riff that constantly plays kinda annoying, but its also what kept getting stuck in my head. There is some really nice fret tapping happening in the right ear I'm hearing as I'm writing this. Wish the mix would have that a bit louder. 2/12 for me.
Clueless: Straight off the gate I don't like the lyrics on this song. I do enjoy the melody of it. Feels very cut and dry of a song. It has a catchy rhythm, its mixed well. I like the song but I do not love it. The guitar solo sets it apart and amps it up a bit. The harmonics on the end guitar are nice to hear. This is probably 7/12 for me.
Light Blue: This one took a few listens to grow on me. I did not enjoy it as a single. Coming back and hearing it on the album it just kept getting better. The 3am Matchbox reference in the first verse is fire. The chorus comes in hard and is catchy. The variation on the 2nd verse guitars is a nice change of pace. I like the lyrics of this song and the bridge. This is 4/12 for me.
Too Late To Say: Once again, this song took time to grow on me. As a single I could not get into this song. Watched the music video a few times and it just wasn't clicking. The chorus really brought me in. It is catchy and gets stuck in my head. It goes into a strong second verse. Evan goes hard on the drums for the bridge. This song is solid all around. 1/12 for me.
Hell Of It: We are getting into the ones I'm not sure were for me. Champs have been leaning into the Pop of Pop Punk a bit heavier on some songs and this one I feel it. This song is hard for me to listen to fully. The melody and lyrics aren't appealing to me. The faded drums throughout the intro make it feel like the song doesn't start till 35 seconds in when the chorus hits. This is 10/12 for me.
Sobering: I don't think I've finished this song once. The electronic drums that continue through the song really take the emotion out of it for me. I'm reminded of "Time Machine" on LP that I could not believe made the final cut of the album. The chorus comes in with solid guitar and drums, but its too late to make me want to finish the song. The bridge shows of Derricks voice a bit, but I really miss the songs where he would belt and show off his range fully. I think this is 12/12 for me.
Tight Grip: This one starts off with a good guitar riff and upbeat drums. Chorus feels like a 2-stepping ska song to me. It just does not hit for me. I could see myself hitting the pit to this but it does not save the song for me. The bridge has some We Are The Brave vibes with the guitar. It finishes strong but its hard for me to get there sometimes with this song. 9/12 for me
I Still Want To: This one starts off with a good guitar riff... wait... isn't that the same guitar we just heard on Tight Grip??? Idk. Every time this song comes on I feel like its the same intro I just heard. Makes me want to skip the song. It varies in what happens before the 4 down strums but personally having them back to back makes them sound more the same than different. The chorus has some nice guitar in the right ear. Is catchy and gets beefy going into the 2nd verse. The melodies are strong throughout. I just really think I don't enjoy the intro and if it was different this song would rank higher for me. 11/12
Just a Dream: This feels like one of the most unique songs on the album. Drums go ham on the 2nd verse. I feel like everyone has a spot to shine on this song. The constant change of the guitar is refreshing from the past few songs. Nice leads in the bridge. A strong finish. This song is solid, more so than I felt on my other listens. 6/12
Save Face Story: Derrick starts this one of strong with a nice vocal intro. Song stays solid throughout. I think the only thing that takes me out of this song is the feature. It just keeps going. I enjoy the song but its not great and its not bad. 8/12
Golden Years: When I get to this part of the album I am just about ready to get to the start again. I'm searching on these last 5 songs for what I found on the first 5. Champs have made their own sound. I feel at times they are more Pop than Punk. Listening to Golden Years reminds me of when I first found State Champs. It reminds of Remedy, with Derrick singing 3 different parts and then belting his voice out. This is the State Champs I remember and I'm thankful they finished the album strong, as they always have. 5/12 for me
I would rank this album 2nd to last in my opinon, above Living Proof. I feel like some songs on this album are just simple. Verse/Chorus/Verse/Chorus/Bridge/Chorus. With the same guitar rolling through the whole song. The ones that stand out, stand out because the Champs show what they can do musically. And they are a heavily talented band.
Am I crazy? Maybe old and out of touch? Or too stuck in the past of what this band started with to grow into what they've become? I will always support the Champs, my dog is even named after them. Curious on others real opinions on the songs.
I saw Free Throw with Four Year Strong. They sound perfectly fine. They are just boring as can be. The songs are not sonically interesting and homies “scream” sounds like a poor man’s Have Mercy.
I was in the pop punk band “best regret” we never put our music anywhere but MySpace and pure volume and our cds. We handed them out, we played some cool shows, opened for spring monkey, opened for unwritten law, we broke up when I was 19. I knew it was dream but I put it to rest. Now I’m a dad and find myself always wishing I kept the band alive. I have a new album I’ve been working on. My question is how do I begin in this age. How do I promote my band and is it just a hobby or could success come. Has any pop punk group started in their 30’s. Thanks in Advance.
Does this imply the existence of a universe where Green Day and Jimmy Eat World do a tour or series of festivals together in summer 2025?
ETA: Green Day and Jimmy Eat World are also playing the same date of Welcome to Rockville, which suggests that they are likely booking shows together.

A couple months ago, I polled my followers and ultimately Green Day was selected as the band where I'd rank all their studio album main tracks. I also ranked all 14 of their albums by using the averages based off my song rankings.
The article link is above, but I'll post my top 10 songs here and ranking of the albums. Everyone feel free to do the same & let's talk some Green Day (who are rumored to be headlining Coachella.)
Here is my ranking of all the albums.
14. ¡Tré!
13. ¡Dos!
12. Father of All Motherfuckers
11. Saviors
10. ¡Uno!
9. Revolution Radio
8. 21st Century Breakdown
7. 39/Smooth
6. Warning
5. Insomniac
4. Nimrod
3. Kerplunk
2. American Idiot
I'm trying to write a very blink 182 style/themed song for a fift for my wife of 32 years. I have a good start on verse 1 and 2, a decent bridge and what I think will be a great chorus. I'm open to suggestions
Chorus: Blink said this is growing up, but we’re never gonna do it Life has a finish line, but we’re nowhere near it We’re getting older, yeah, but we’re staying young forever Take my hand, walk with me—let’s make this last forever
Anyone else really digging this song/collab?
listened in full on my walk this morning! Hope more people listen to this record! Jade is such an amazing song writer
I first heard this song around 2007/2008. It was my first ever pop/punk style song, but I haven’t been able to find it for years. As far as I remember, the band name had something to do with radio, or maybe AMA? The song itself had a verse about “we take this city as our tonight”. I’ve been trying for years to find it, please help!
I really like Cut the Bridge right now.
Wr
They released this last year, not sure how many people realized, but great. Exactly in their unique style, such a solid band.
I'm in Orange County, CA and would be happy to get it done by someone here if that option exists, but if not also happy to pay to create it and I'll take it to a local shop.
I'm specifically inspired by the aesthetic of the classic American style tattoos that are pop punk themed. There are some TSSF and Neck Deep ones that come up when you image search "pop punk tattoos".
I want "I'm just a monster with no one to scare" worked into that style :)
Wack crowd on a Tuesday. Phoenix 11/19
