r/Yellowcard is a subreddit devoted to the musical genius behind the Florida-originated band, Yellowcard. Yellowcard is a pop-punk band that resides in Los Angeles and has gained several million fans worldwide.

Yellowcard was an American pop-punk band from Jacksonville, Florida. Their music featured prominent use of a violin, which distinguished them from their peers in the genre. The band formed in 1997 and experienced many lineup changes between their formation and eventual breakup in 2017.

Most recently the band consisted of Ryan Key (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Sean Mackin (violin, backing vocals), Ryan Mendez (lead guitar), and Josh Portman (bass). Popular singles of the group include “Only One”, “Lights and Sounds”, and, perhaps their best-known track, “Ocean Avenue”, which received multi-platinum certification on June 28, 2013.

The band released ten studio albums, three EPs, and acoustic versions of two of their studio albums. Their final record, titled simply “Yellowcard”, was released on September 30, 2016. On June 25, 2016, they announced on their website that they would be breaking up after one final world tour.

Yellowcard played their final show to a sold-out crowd on March 25, 2017 at the House of Blues in Anaheim, California, closing out the set with “Ocean Avenue”.

Songs about former band members

Hey, I'm very into the history of Yellowcard as part of my fandom and I wanted to learn from you all and make a playlist for myself. What is the total list of songs about former band members and who (if known)? The ones that immediately come to mind are Empty Apartment, One Year Six Months (I have no idea who those two are about specifically), and Five Becomes Four (famously about Ben Harper). So I know I'm missing a lot of history and figured I'd tap into the people here's knowledge. Thanks!

Look what came in the mail today!

I know that to Ryan I was just another faceless song request, but knowing that the man who wrote a song that means so much to me sat down and hand wrote the lyrics FOR me, really makes this my most prized piece of Yellowcard memorabilia now.

I can't wait to see them live in August for the 9th time! 🤘🏻🟡

Meeting Yellowcard June 13th

Bought VIP tickets to see Yellowcard. I’ve seen them 5 times. They played at the Ogden in Denver and that show changed my life. Now I can meet the band get a photo and see acoustic songs. What do I say to them? They’ve been such an influence possibly my favorite band. What do you say to your hero’s?

Everyone's Favorite Song?

What is everyone's favorite song? We all know that Ocean Avenue is their most popular song and no doubt a lot of people's favorite song. But what is your personal favorite and why?

Me? Rough Landing Holly. I've easily listened to it at least a thousand times over the 15 years that I've been a fan of YC.

Was there ever a physical copy on CD or Vinyl of 13 by William Ryan Key?

I'd love a physical copy of Ryan's EP 13. I really enjoyed it but can't find a copy anywhere.

Question about LP

Did I miss something that happened? I thought when LP left the band that it was totally amicable... But I was listening to Caught on the Mike where they interviewed him and he said he'd totally tour with the band if they asked him (said he'd even do it for free). Is there drama that I missed? Or is it as simple as them preferring to be a 4-man band and featuring different drummers on tour (while using Adam for albums)?

Ryan Key Listen Throughs

So Ryan Key listened through all the albums on Twitch a couple years ago, but I missed it due to being busy with my now 2 year-old. I was just curious if anyone had access to these? I subscribed to his Twitch but apparently there's no Discord benefits for that anymore, which is where the files used to be listed. Just curious if anyone knew where to find them.

Song Question

Something I've been trying to figure out the answer to... I seem to recall there being a song that Ryan Key said his friend wrote and that he was performing it for him. Am I misremembering or does such a song of theirs exist?

Three Flights Down, anyone have a good quality mp3/etc?

It’s showing up on Spotify like this for me and I’m so sad lol. I know there’s one on Youtube but was wondering if anyone had one of a higher quality. Would love to add it to my local files on Spotify.

Cheers 🤙🏼

2024 set with Third Eye Blind

Does anyone know the play set? If Yellowcard was headlining I would go to Red Rock. If their set is going to be shorter I will just do SLC or Vegas. Thoughts?

Best drum parts from LP's tenure?

Appreciation thread for Longineu Parsons. Also I'm compiling a playlist of great drummers and wanna include YC. When I think of LP's raddest drum parts, the bridges of Ocean Avenue and Always Summer. Lights and Sounds too. Am I missing any?

ALBUM REVIEW: Yellowcard + Hammock - A Hopeful Sign

Yellowcard leaves their pop-punk sound on the floor and taps into the world of Nashville's ambient post-rock duo Hammock to reinvent and reimagine some of their most memorable songs.

Having spent most of 2023 celebrating the twentieth anniversary of their seminal album Ocean Avenue, Yellowcard vocalist/guitarist Ryan Key wondered what was next, where he felt the band and his songs should go. The answer was to go completely left field and give their music a fresh outlook, a new dawn, a new way of breathing, of existing.

Key became good friends with Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson of Hammock, having listened to their music for over a decade. The friendship grew through their mutual love of the sounds both artists create, and with Hammock being one of the defining and most pioneering artists in the post-rock and ambient space, this project was always going to be inspiring and move Key's work into a new stratosphere.

To emphasise this project, the album's lead single happens to be Yellowcard's biggest hit. Defining "Ocean Avenue" as an Emo/Indie classic is probably doing the song a disservice; its influence across generations, genres, and bands is huge. However, we have the track stripped down to the bare bones; the iconic riffs and pop punk-driven vocals are gone. We are left with fragile beauty, a haunting piano-led ballad that builds and progresses. The lyrics take on a completely different meaning; there's a yearning and need to revisit what once was. "Ocean Avenue" rides the emotional crest of a wave and truly does take you away. https://www.xsnoize.com/album-review-yellowcard-hammock-a-hopeful-sign/

Back Home Lyric Discussion and Meaning

I love the song Back Home, and know all the lyrics by heart; but I've always wondered something about the meaning of the song.

The opening of the song is: "Don't know What I was looking for When I went home" and I've always wondered why it's not 'When I LEFT home'

To me, the song is about someone who left home and misses home, with lines like: "Back home I always thought I wanted so much more Now I'm not too sure" "Another sunny day in California I'm sure back home they'd love to see it" "But the water's shallow here And I am full of fear And empty-handed after two long years"

All of this makes me feel like the song is about someone who misses home, but then the opening makes it sound like they left home and are going back home but don't know why they are going back home which can mean they left home for a reason and don't miss it.

Hoping someone can shed some light.

TIA

Yellowcard Tour VIP Package

Last year I went to the Yellowcard Tour and purchased the VIP Package. With that came an autographed poster, VIP Cup (hard to even find online), VIP Laminate, access and Q&A with the band during rehearsal, Meet and Greet with individual photo and they were nice enough to sign my vinyl. Really cool laid back guys and actually have conversations. They are back on tour again and I just need outside help on if I should be like why not, just go for it and do it again? Favorite band since High School and these opportunities don’t come often.
