So I know that he was engaged to someone in the early 2000s, but she broke it off after he cheated on her, hence the album FANSD. And then he married Emily from 2015-2018, but they divorced. I kinda feel bad for him, but idk if he’s married these days or has kids. Do yall have any answers?
Cat and Be My Escape have been some of my songs since middle school (like 8 years ago) and I just heard that they are a Christian rock band. What songs specifically are Christian? Am I missing something?
So sad there are not that many :(
Mountaintop fades out with the same organ/keyboard/droning sound note that Don’t Blink fades in with
That’s all
UPDATE: they are not the same. See ucancmysox’s explanation below!
Matt Hoopes did a live stream from his 1981Inventions Instagram about 3 days ago and I'm just getting around to watching it. Here's the RK relevant stuff:
When asked when they'll tour again, he said "I, y'know, soon? This year? I think we're in a good season to say 'let's do a tour'"
Someone asked to give a tour of the "green guy" (some sort of gnome/Santa statue in his shop) and he said "we got this when we played the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and they had like 200 of these on stage and so we each grabbed one and we just kinda like flew home with them, I just put it under my arm and flew home with it, and here he is almost 20 years later probably"
While giving a tour around the shop he showed off a guitar that was owned by Thiessen (one of the surf green PRS singlecuts with the P90 and palm tree logo) that has his thumbprint in nail polish
Someone asked the most difficult RK song to play and he said "I think for me it's probably 'Bite My Tongue' off of our Five Score record, mainly just because it's so nonstop fast tons of palm muting, tons of fast palm muting, and it's just very um...I don't know it just wears me out" he came back to this question later and added "yes it is a dotted eighth delay, and we do a lot of fast downstroke kind of like palm muting stuff, so that one is just really exhausting to me for some reason, it's hard for my [right] hand to keep up as we finish the song"
Someone asked "is RK still a thing?" and he said "Relient K is a thing, Matt and I are trying to just get in the same room more often, and figure out what's going on"
Someone asked a question about "beefiest guitars" and he said "yeah so that album has the most insanely layered guitars. We did that record with Howard Benson [Five Score] and actually the engineers on that record really brought a lot to the table as far as our approach to guitars, and that was something where we were, instead of doing a left and a right guitar we did two left guitars and two right guitars and every part that we added on we did two on the right and two on the left and we used different guitars and different amps and it got pretty thick, so that was like a fun experience to do that record"
"I would love to do some Relient K specific walkthroughs where I show not only this is how I play this song but this is how I set my delay, this is how I set my gain to do this song, and then kinda walk through how to play it as well"
"We're trying to figure out how to do the band again. I think that Matt and I both want to create and want to make something new and we're excited to do that"
Favorite RK song to play: "Probably 'Forget And Not Slow Down', I don't know maybe 'Sahara'? I really like a lot of the guitar parts and the energy in that song, it's fun to play live"
Any word from Brian Pittman? "Y'know Brian texts me memes and reels and all sorts of embarrassing things and I love it. He and I have been friends since we were kids and just so you know I am constantly trying to get him to make music with us again and I hope that he will someday. He owns a landscaping company and just is home with his family in Ohio but I also would love to make some tracks with him"
RK cassette releases? "Not yet, our first record came out on cassette non-ironically and I think I still have a few copies of that, but that was actually in the year 2000, people thought that people would still want cassettes"
Who is responsible for "Be My Escape" and "Devastation and Reform"? "So those were both, Matt actually wrote those as part of the song, and I added guitar parts throughout, but those riffs were kinda specifically catalysts for those songs. It's been so cool to make music with Matt for so many years cause I think he just brings so much creativity and positive energy to the room. Y'know it's crazy being in rooms with guys who have written huge songs for like massive pop artists and then to be in the room with Matt and he's written some massive pop songs too but to be in a room with him and feel like he is the best writer in the room right now"
What pedal makes FANSD sound great? "Well I made the LVL to sound like FANSD. This is like what I wish I had for FANSD. This is like the dynamics, the boost, the preamp that I wish I had on it. What we actually used on the record were a series of different boost pedals, the EP Booster Exotic Effects, the Creation Audio MK423 Boost, we used various amounts of overdrive, Tubescreamer, the Fulldrive, just kind of like various different things"
I don’t know how long this has been posted on their X, but they have a bio that says “we back” Is this new? Cus I haven’t heard of anything in a while, but hell, it’d be great if they released something.
Faking My Own Suicide is so so good. I liked this girl the past summer, and she liked me too, and I really thought we would start dating, but it never happened and I missed my chance cus I was too nervous. Now I still think about her every day, and I don’t know if she ever thinks about me anymore… but this song is very good.
I love the song “Marigold”, which could be viewed as a love song to a person or about God, like many Relient K songs. To me, this song is such a beautiful metaphor of God “picking” us even though we’re just “weeds”. I always get goosebumps listening to that line “Oh, I’m a marigold, and you picked me” ❤️
Not really looking for a tattoo critique; just wanted to share something really meaningful to me with a group that hopefully can appreciate it!
Cleaning out my knock knack shelf I found my old warped tour 05 book. Forgot they signed this and my shirt (which my friend lost ). Anyone else have autographs of theirs that they forgot they had but found later?
I know people probably like collecting more but I’m still actively using this old Hoopes pic I got a few years ago. Always sits in my pic holder that I have on me. Love it!
Savannah has to be up there 🥰
Church Jams Now just released an episode where they interview long time RK producer Mark Lee Townsend. For anyone who doesn't know, he has been their main producer for most of their albums, and is how they got signed with Gotee in the first place (he played guitar for DC Talk). I can't wait to listen!

i love it so much its so waaarm ❤️
my theory is that they are the sheeple Christians who listen to their music but idk.
help?
Does anyone know if there's an instrumental version of I Hate Christmas Parties anywhere???
So, this song was released on Apathetic EP in Nov 2005, just after the Music Inspired By album for The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. I’ve always assumed that Always Winter was supposed to be on inspired by album but was left off for some reason, but I don’t have any info to justify that thought. Anyone know? I’ve also felt like it fits in well on their Christmas album. So I actually leave it off my Apathetic album and put it on Let It Snow.
Any love or thoughts for this song?
I went down a YouTube rabbit hole last night watching old sets from RK and found this recently-uploaded acoustic set from 2002. It’s really great quality and, perhaps most interestingly, has an early version of When I Go Down where some lyrics are different from the final version they’d release 2 years later!
I’d like to get the mmhmm vinyl, but there are a lot of versions. I’ve seen a gold one, a mint one, and a grey one- are there any others? Any difference besides the colors? Are any more rare than others?
Thanks!
This is at Where We Were Young festival 2023. I didn’t realize he said that ahahahah
Church Jams Now just released an episode breaking down the Christmas album track by track. They also STRONGLY hinted at a forthcoming Mark Lee Townsend interview. Keep an eye out for that!
