So I was wondering this last night, and maybe someone with more in-depth knowledge about our contract situation can chime in.
As of now we only have two more picks in this draft, Round 3 - Pick 11 and Round 4 - Pick 22.
4 rookies is a pretty light draft class, and it very well may end up that way. But Poles certainly has the ability to take some of our 2025 picks (9 total) and use them as leverage to land some additional picks in this draft. Obviously we have no idea how many guys Poles is in love with in this draft, and that will likely influence what he eventually does.
However, how much do you think upcoming contracts/extensions play into this? When you have an offseason where you have to let a bunch of guys walk that you can't afford, it becomes more important to have a strong rookie class to fill those spots for cheap. Is that on the horizon for the Bears? Will Poles be more inclined to keep those 2025 picks in his back pocket to help combat a mass exodus of free agents leaving to get paid elsewhere?
A quick glance shows me that next offseason isn't too bad, with Keenan (soon to be extended for a couple years, hopefully) and Tevin Jenkins being the only big names potentially hitting the unrestricted free agent market. The following offseason looks like a bit of a problem though, with DJ Moore, Nate Davis, Edwards, Everett, Billings, Gordon, Brisker, and Braxton Jones all set for unrestricted free agency.
What do you think is the right move for Poles? Sacrifice future draft capital that may be desperately needed down the line for more picks now, or stay put and hope that he can hit on the last two picks we have in this draft?
I need a cool Williams or Odunze wallpaper, who’s got one already?
I’ve worked at Loreal Corporate for 10+ years in Marketing and very rarely do my Career life and personal passions collide like this… but long story short, i’ve flagged Caleb to the head of Essie nail polish and they’re looking into who they can contact in Caleb’s camp to try working something out. The president loves that he’s been leaning into it, and she sees this as something that is becoming way more mainstream in men’s sports.
Stay tuned on if he becomes the first male nail color spokesperson in pro sports 💅🏻
Jared McCain from Duke did a deal with Sally Hansen… Hoping Essie gets it done with Caleb.
Watching last nights draft gave me second hand embarrassment for falcons fans. I don’t know how it’s possible for someone to consistently make the worst possible decisions in every situation. It’s like he has a fetish for destroying franchises with a glimmer of hope. Good riddance, Chicago sends its regards. Last nights draft made me extremely greatful for king poles! Bear down!

TONIGHT THE BEARS CONTINUE TO BUILD THEIR SUPER BOWL TEAM. DRINK THE KOOL AID AND BEAR DOWN
Welcome to the rebuild. Bears Management moved on from a QB and Offensive Coordinator that didn't deliver the results we needed to see. This year we get an exciting new QB, a deep wide receiver pool and a solid tight end that doesn't have bricks for hands, and couple of backfield threats. What we also have is a new OC in Shane Waldron that will be co-piloting this team along with the Flus. @Further_Beyond provided a nice writeup about Shane Waldron's play calling style a couple of months back.
Over the past couple years, there was debate over why the offense wasn't producing. Was it a QB that was slow to make reads, held the ball too long and suffered the consequences of an O-line falling apart leading to sacks and fumbles? Was it an uninspired offensive sequencing where run, run, pass was the waltz we danced to every drive? Was it a defensively focused HC that didn't make the adjustments needed to throw off defenses?
My reasonable expectation is that 2024 is going to be a learning season. We're moving forward with a QB that appears to have the skillset to make quick reads and decisions and put the ball where it needs to be. I suspect we may see a decrease in sacks and fumbles but an uptick in interceptions as a young QB learns how to react to elite level defenses. I've got hopes that CW will learn and react to the new environment, but his success will require the support of a smart coaching staff.
Which brings me to my main thought: how do we equip this coaching staff to make choices that lead this team to success? I don't think the coaching staff is incompetent, but they have just been gifted with a roster of stacked talent and personalities to manage. From some of the behind the scenes videos, it looks like Flus and Poles are pretty solid at keeping the cancer out of the locker room. How can the Bears Management provide a coach with a 10-24 record the tools he needs to get this team on the right track?
My own thoughts: get Matt Eberflus a coaching mentor. Who do I have in mind: Bill Belicheck. He's not brought in as a direct coach to the team, but is given a role to train Eberflus behind the scenes. Bill Belicheck was gifted an elite QB in Tom Brady. Now Tom Brady is a freak of a QB and his talents led to a Super Bowl win without Belicheck while he played for the Bucs, but the Belicheck/Brady combo was a match made in heaven for them. Could a Belicheck mentorship for Flus help him better understand both on field and off field team management? Is Belicheck just a freak of nature himself who has talents that can't be taught? Of course it's a pipe dream that BB would even entertain such a role, but you can't hand the keys of an F1 race car over to someone that just got their CDL and expect them to drive to victory.
We all want the Bears to succeed. I think the talent or shortcomings of the coaching staff will be fully exposed when you have a roster full of talent like the Bears now appear to have. Again, I think we have to be patient during the 2024 season, but I don't think we're willing to keep playing the wait and see game. The winning recipe needs the right ingredients. How can the Bears add the right seasoning to the coaching staff to make sure the dish gets us salivating?
