I can already see the 2025 draft being a Penei Sewell Jamar Chase 2.0 for us

I lean into the Jamar Chase category.

Is today some sort of “Commanders day”?

Is today National “Washington Commanders Day”? I’m seeing a lot (like an unusually high amount) of people wearing Washington football gear today. I’ve searched Twitter, the commanders app, here and a google search and I’m not seeing anything as of yet. What am I missing? It feels like it’s 1991 in Virginia today.

It’s good to see tbh. From old school tshirts to new school jerseys. Haven’t seen people represent Washington football like this since I was a kid during football season.

Thoughts on Jayden Daniels

You do not have to worry about "character concerns" with this man. Last season Jayden Daniels had to sit down after every drive and watch an absolutely atrocious Matt House defense. 108th in the country in total defense, giving up 706 yards to Ole Miss in a game Daniels desperately tried to keep them in. A defense so bad that they gutted the defensive staff as soon as the season ended.

Having zero ability to trust in your defense can fuck up a quarterbacks play like nothing else; every drive becomes much more meaningful when the other team is practically guaranteed points. Makes for either over erratic or over conservative play, depending on the personality. Jayden Daniels put up heisman numbers despite that. Not at all a guy you have to worry about not wanting to be there/show up.

That said, someone needs to teach this man how to slide. He brushed off some hospital hits last season, that wont always happen.

Comparing 2023’s draft to 2024’s to show what an insane difference a competent gm can make

Two of the top DB’s in 2023 we could of easily had(and honestly both if we didn’t let the lions jump us). All logical signs pointed to Gonzalez at 16 given he slipped from being projected top 8, and he was more highly graded on literally every gm’s draft board than Forbes. So obviously we draft Forbes because defensive genius’s Del Rio and Ron believed it was a better scheme fit. If scheme fit entails “completely destroy an undersized DB’s confidence by putting him on physical monster AJ Brown for an entire game and then benching him when he wasn’t even a man corner(Gonzo was), plus only rushing 4 every down putting our db’s on an island”, then we nailed that one. I’ve never seen a draft pick submitted more quickly after that, as the patriots were all over Gonzo. I don’t think this is even the worst of it. We interviewed Brian Branch multiple times and told him straight up we are taking him at 16. He told the media this afterwards. So after going the route of lying to a player’s face and thinking we are slick by waiting for him in the 2nd, the lions, who for sure knew we were all over Branch due to Rivera putting all his cards on the table during pre-draft, trade two picks before us in the second and snag him. We take Quan Martin, and now have 2 db’s who we reached for and ended up getting benched. Stromberg and Braeden Daniels after that, don’t need to elaborate on how bad those two were.

Shift to AP regime, we take the qb we wanted all along while holding our cards so tight to our chest even Jayden didn’t actually know for sure it was going to be him. Next we go bpa at good value in Newton, get potentially the best cb in the draft from the best defensive team in cfb, the te we wanted, a tackle we liked, and drafted 9 different positions in a single draft. It doesn’t seem we really reached on anyone and this felt so refreshingly calculated. AP knew who he wanted and when they were going to go, then maneuvered throughout the draft accordingly. Add some nice free agent signings while preserving a ton of future cap, and we have the makings of an actually decent roster that addressed positional needs and maintained future flexibility.

In the end, let’s thank Ron. His incompetence made Harris realize we needed to completely clean house, gave us the second pick, a new gm, a coach who knows how to build a real staff, and consequently more hope than I’ve had for this team in a decade. I think I can see the light boys(knock on wood). HTTR

Hey r/Commanders, if you’re missing out on football, try a Defenders game at Audi Field!

https://preview.redd.it/m0z7b0wziayc1.jpg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e0748811271ca759f74803ca9ae50387dbd88180

The team has a crucial game against their division opponent San Antonio on May 5th at 4pm (broadcasted on Fox). Tickets are starting at $10 on resale. Weather currently doesn't have rain in the forecast, but if you're worried about that, the seats along the sidelines are covered.

We've got former Commanders in Kelvin Harmon, Montae Nicholson, and Jordan Ta'amu.

If you've never been to Audi Field before, it's just a 10-15 minute walk from either the Waterfront or Navy Yard metro stop.

Also, if you want to watch/go to any other home games, there's one next week on the 12th vs Michigan, and the final home game in Week 10 against Arlington on June 2nd at 12.

0 Expectations.

Personally i think the team blew it and drafted an injury prone bust, when we could have gotten someone maybe not as good now but w a higher ceiling. That being moot now, it’s most likely this is another bad season and we end up bottom 5. Most of the team is full of holes and barely playoff material. Defense is even more lacking. I’m seeing another Bryce Young type of season by him here. Won’t do much + a shitty surrounding team. It’s hard to get hyped for the guy, so not expecting much from him.

New Podcast

What’s up fellow Washington fans. My buddy and I started a new podcast at the beginning of the 2023 season called the Capitol Street Sports Podcast. We talk about all DC sports, but have a primary focus on our beloved football team. We can be homers sometimes, but we give honest takes regarding the team.

Anyways, we’re trying to grow our listener base, and want more interaction with fans of the team. If you ever have the chance or if you want more Skins content then give us a listen. You can find us on any of the major podcast platforms. I won’t say we’re fantastic at this yet, but we want to be better. So, any and all feedback is welcomed. Thank you and go Skins!

RFK Demolition and Navy Yard Stadium Location

With the news that RFK demo is officially approved what is everyones thoughts on the new stadium location. My number once choice is still RFK due to the history, but the Navy Yard spot has grown on me a lot. It would be cool to have three Washington franchises within walking distance of each other. I was at Nats park the other day and if youre near section 232 you can see the area they would develop across the water. Plenty of space for a stadium and parking for tailgating with a metro stop near by and a walkable bridge across the water.

We should temper our expectations for Daniels, sure, but can we also agree he should get a long runway before the "He's a BUST!" crowd gets started?

Jayden Daniels might be "NFL ready" as all the analysts like to note, but what is his ceiling for 2024 really? CJ Stroud in 2023 or RGIII in 2012? And those seasons are so rare it might not be reasonable to even think about it.

But both of those seasons started poorly for their teams. The Skins were 3-6 going into the bye in 2012 and then famously ripped off 7 straight to make the playoffs. Similarly, the Texans were 3-3 last season going into their bye and then came out of it and lost to Carolina(!), dropping to 3-4 before going on their playoff run.

The point is, it takes anyone time to adjust to the speed of NFL defenses. Jayden's not going to come out and look like Mahomes in Week 1. For all the people telling us not to get too excited for him, I would ask them to show the same restraint when the season starts and we're sitting at 1-3 in early October.

Brissett vs. Mariota - what am I missing?

Almost universally, Brissett is considered one of the top backup QBs in the NFL. And on that I agree - his 2022 season with the Browns, and 2019 season with the Colts, he played admirably, with a QB rating barely below median of NFL starters those seasons. And while there was limited playing time with us last season, the offense looked completely different with him in.

What I struggle with, is why is Mariota looked at so negatively in comparison? Most of this sub did not look positively on this signing and the only article online that I can find ranking expected backup QBs for the 2024 season, ranks Brissett #1 and Mariota #24. Mariota and Brissett are about the same age, with similar amounts of playing experience (a bit more for Mariota), but Mariota's career stats are across the board better than Brissett's - QB rating, comp %, Y/A, Pass TDs/start, rushing Y/A, rushing Y/start - are all measurably better for Mariota. Really the only efficiency stat that seems to be in favor of Brissett is a slightly better TD/Int ratio. And this is with Mariota having 4 different OCs in 5 years in Tennessee, and the play calling atrocity of Arthur Smith in Atlanta.

Even looking more recently, as they were both starters most of the season in 2022, their efficiency numbers were basically even, with Brissett on the more talented roster.

Is there something obvious I'm missing that's leading to all of the (deserved) love for Brissett, but distain for Mariota?
