Last year, I asked Chiefs Memedom for help naming our Playoff Victories of the Mahomes era. I think the names we came up with are great. Some were more obvious than others, but we got some good feedback.
This year we have two more wins that need names against Houston and Buffalo. What should we name them? My initial thoughts are:
2025:
Houston: “Where’s the beef?”
Bills: “SSDS (Same Shit Different Season - from their experience obviously).
I hope we CRUSH the Eagles. Leave no doubt. I am so tired of reading relentless jabs, stabs, and shots from butthurt “nfl” fans that are 100% ignorant, blind, in denial, mad, jealous, etc. etc. etc. about play after play. EVERY TEAM benefits and detriments from calls in ANY game. I’m just venting, I know this is a tired take, but Jesus just recognize the Chiefs are GOOD like really good. We have so many great, monumental, ASTOUNDING story lines in this run that are so special. It frustrates me so much that our players, coaches, leadership staff don’t get the respect they deserve. I could keep going but good lord, this team is incredible. I hope we leave NO DOUBT.
Sorry that I'm a bit late, I got busy
People keep saying that the Eagles have the best defense in the league, so I decided to compare the Chiefs stats against theirs to see how the two matched up. However I decided to focus on games played against other playoff teams, because I felt that the data would be more accurate this way.
For reference, here are their stats for the regular season (not including week 18 because both teams rested starters):
Team | Total yards allowed | YPG | Total points allowed | PPG | Games played |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Chiefs | 4972 | 310.8 | 288 | 18 | 16 |
Eagles | 4494 | 280.9 | 290 | 18.1 | 16 |
The Eagles have a slight advantage in yards, while the PPG is almost identical. All in all, pretty damn close.
But now, here are their stats when facing playoff teams:
In the regular season:
Team | Total yards allowed | YPG | Total points allowed | PPG | Games played |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Chiefs | 2549 | 318.6 | 144 | 18 | 8 |
Eagles | 2543 | 325.9 | 168 | 24 | 7 |
Including playoff games:
Team | Total yards allowed | YPG | Total points allowed | PPG | Games played |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Chiefs | 3259 | 325.9 | 187 | 18.7 | 10 |
Eagles | 3642 | 363.3 | 223 | 22.3 | 10 |
YPG - Yards per game
PPG - Points per game
All averages rounded to nearest tenth
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Conclusion: The Chiefs win in every category, but what's most surprising is the difference in PPG. The Chiefs averaged 18 PPG while the Eagles averaged 24 PPG, a 6 point difference. In terms of YPG, the Chiefs win that too, albeit with a less significant margin of 37.4 yards.
I’ll go first QB- Patrick Mahomes RB- Jamaal Charles WR1- Tyreek Hill (sorry peak cheetah was unstoppable) WR2- Dante Hall TE1- Tony Gonzalez TE2- Travis Kelce LT- John Alt LG- Ed Budde C- Creed Humphrey RG- Joe Thuney RT- Mitchell Schwartz
K- Harrison Butkicker
DT- Chris Jones DT-Curly Culp DE- Tamba Hali DE- Jared Allen OLB- Derrick Thomas MLB- Nick Bolton OLB- Justin Houston CB- Brandon Flowers CB- Marcus Peters SS- Eric Berry FS- Tyrann Mathieu
TLDR:
Yes: Andy, Pat, Trav, Jones
?: Thuney, Spags, Hopkins, Tyreek
???: Creed, McDuffie, Veach
So it's the bye week, aka a perfect time to sit back and talk longwindedly about things that don't really matter cause we've still got an excruciating 7 days until the big game. Wanted to check in on the Hall of Fame chances of various players/staff and think about what another ring could do for their arguments. If the past is any indication, it's clear that dynasties get lots of players into the Hall so we should have a lot of induction ceremonies to look forward to. Mostly used PFR's HOF Monitor to check the career stats and such for this, but personally I don't put much weight in their algorithm so I mostly ignored that. Without further ado...
Locks
-Andy Reid: 'ironclad 1000% with a side of nuggies' lock
-Travis Kelce: 'bet your life-savings, not even a messy breakup and multi-platinum Taylor diss album would derail things' lock
-Patrick Mahomes: 'such a lock that I can't even make up a clever joke to express how much of a lock' lock
-Chris Jones: his case is the weakest of the locks, but now that his reputation has finally caught up to his level of play and he isn't overshadowed by Aaron Donald anymore I think he is a lock. If he adds another few seasons of counting stats and another All-Pro or two then he absolutely is, not to mention the possibility of more rings next week and into the future.
Building a Strong Case
-Steve Spagnuolo: nobody has ever gotten in as a coordinator, the closest was Dick LaBeau who got in as a player but some think that was partially also rewarding him for his work as the Steelers DC. Personally I don't see how you can leave Spags out though, especially if we win next week. That would give him 5 rings and tons of signature moments, including possibly the greatest playoff run for a DC ever in leading the Giants over the 18-0 Patriots. One thing that could paradoxically hurt his chances are if he gets a HC job in the next year or so and does poorly or just ok. I think voters could be convinced to look past his one poor run as a HC, but if he flamed out again instead of staying here and racking up more big moments that could upset things. Someone please explain this to Steve so he doesn't leave.
-Joe Thuney: getting in as a guard is tough, but a win next week would give him 5 rings, tied for second-most all-time at any position. And he'd have the legacy boost of having played LT this run as an extra feather in his cap. He's only got two first team All-Pros though, on the low end for a HOF guard, but o-line awards are so reputation-based that I think he should rack up some more now that people realize how good he is.
-Harrison Butker: as of Thursday, Butker now has the best chance of any active kicker lol. But kickers in general are so accurate now that even though he is among the most accurate ever by percentage that doesn’t make him a lock. He does have a Super Bowl winner, even if it was a fairly easy one, alongside tons of big playoff kicks. For everyone’s sake, please keep him away from any microphones for the rest of his career. credit to u/albteef for bringing him up, i had forgotten him at first
-Brett Veach: Brent is the most "I have no clue" of any of the people on this list. A quick glance at Wikipedia shows that most of the GMs/architects of previous great dynasties have gotten into the Hall. However, Reid is the one who will get more of the credit for our success over the past decade, rightly so. I think the key thing for Veach will be how we do whenever Andy decides to retire. Veach is only 47 so he should have ample chance to show off as the top decision-maker. And Veach does have an incredible record of team-building, there's no way we could have had so much success in the salary cap-era without his drafting. While he wasn't technically GM when we drafted Mahomes, he still gets credit as the first to pound the table for #15.
-Deandre Hopkins: another one I'm not really sure about. WR is a weird position for the HOF and there's a backlog from the modern era where passing exploded, but Hopkins was pretty consistently dominant for years. A ring would help, but how much it helps will vary based on how involved he is next Sunday. One interesting note is that as far as WRs go, there is a logjam for career TDs that Hopkins is right in the middle of. 13 WRs have 86 or more TDs, and then 14 have between 85 and 82 TDs. Every WR above 85 is either in the hall or likely to make it when eligible, but plenty of that group of 14 are not in. Hopkins is at 83. Idk this is mostly inconsequential, but getting just 3 more TDs will move him ahead of this pack, from tied for 21st up to 14th.
Old Friends
-Tyreek Hill: Tyreek is in a similar spot to Hopkins, probably a little stronger. Fewer yards, more total TDs, more rings, more All-Pros. I'd say he has a very strong case if he keeps burnishing it some, but hard to say how voters will treat his abuse, not to mention the uncertainty surrounding his commitment to the Dolphins.
-Terrell Suggs: Suggs was a long-shot to make it into the Hall before he joined up with the Chiefs and helped us to win the first championship of our dynasty, cementing himself as a lock and all-time Chiefs legend /s
-Frank Clark: Frank Clark has the third most playoff sacks of all-time. Frank Clark will not be getting into the Hall of Fame. He'll forever be KC's Julian Edelman.
Too Early to Speculate (But I'm Going to Anyway)
-Creed Humphrey: Center is a hard position to reach the Hall in, but Creed has had a nearly flawless start to his career. He has rings, he has name recognition, and he has an extension with the Chiefs, ensuring he'll keep snapping it to the GOAT for many years to come. He has as good of a shot as a center just four years into his career could possibly have.
-Trent McDuffie: 2 Super Bowls in his first 3 seasons, with the potential to make it 3. An insane start to a career. CB play can vary so widely year-to-year though and he very well could end up being a casualty of success just like Tyreek was, leading to us getting McDuffie, so I'd put his odds at lower than Creed's.
This might be a hot take, but honestly I'm thinking this year's team might be it if you look at the overall unit. 2019 would be my alternate choice; that team was so good on offense that they basically changed the way defense is played around the league, but they didn't have the defensive pieces that this team has.
Can we honestly say, statistically, Mahomes has played some of his worst games in the Superbowl? I would like for him to break that trend and have a break out game (at least 5+ tds, 350+ yds) in a Superbowl win vs the Eagles, solidifying his 🐐 status. Any thoughts Chiefs Kingdom? Go Chiefs!!
Especially since the chiefs have been in it a bunch, I wait to see if they’re gonna win, but there is never anything with the actual colored logos, except the hats. The Super Bowl logos are getting cool again so it’s really annoying. Anyone else bothered by this? Even the opening night stuff tends to be bland. I got one of the Antigua pullovers last year but it was extremely overpriced. But that’s like the only thing I see with a chiefs logo and the actual colored Super Bowl logo.
I’ve been reflecting a lot on my younger self lately. There is no way in hell she would believe me if I told her that the Chiefs would win a Super Bowl. Let a lone be on the precipice of a 3-peat. So in honor of her. Here is a picture of my favorite player from when I was a little. Who was your favorite player from the pre-Mahomes era?
At 14:42 in the latest episode of The Franchise on the Chiefs Youtube channel.
Do the Chiefs still do a drawing for season ticket holders to purchase Super Bowl tickets? Have they done the drawing yet? I’m an STM and never saw an email about it.
My understanding is if you get drawn as an STM the price you would pay for Super Bowl tickets is substantially less than what the general public pays.
