Many reports on broken display panels

I recently joined Reddit and something that sticks out to me, are the seemingly continuous and countless reports on broken MacBook (Retina?) display panels or cables. What's up with that?

I acknowledge that Reddit has a large and active user base, which means issues can seem more prevalent due to the sheer volume of posts. But it seems like a lot to me regardless. Every day, 2-3 reports and I'm probably missing some in other subreddits.

Advice for Baby Mac User

My husband bought me a MACBOOK AIR 15” M3/16GB/256GB SSD (2024) for Christmas and I am too scared to use it! It is incredibly thin, and I don’t want to put my dirty, grimy hands on it. 😂

I am meticulous in my care of my iPhones — screen protector, cover, etc. — but this is my first Mac.

I would love some suggestions from those who own the new 2024 models when it comes to brands and products for cleaning, as well as protecting the device.

And is AppleCare+ worth it?

And is there anything I should do to keep the battery well preserved?

Should I put a battery charging limit?

I just got a MacBook Air M2 16gb ram, I want it to last a good amount of years and want to preserve its battery health, I thought of a 80% limit but that makes a lot of difference (imagine being at 20% and thinking “I could be at 40 rn if it wasn’t for the limit”), is 90 a good charging limit? Or do I not need to worry about battery health at all on macs

Mac iPhone backup unique question

Hey y’all, so I have a unique situation here at hand. I currently have an iPhone 13 and a MacBook Air M3. I have an app on my phone (which is now deleted from the App Store) and I download all my music on that app. If I were to switch phones and do a backup to Mac, would I be able to retrieve all my downloaded music? Thanks for the help

macbook trade in

I was planing to buy a new macbook and trade in my old one. Can the worker help me first transfer all the data to the new macbook first even if I don’t have a backup and then delete everything from my old MacBook when they take it for trade in? Also, will all my saved password from my old Mac transfer over to the new one?

flat battery help

hi guys , i have a (i think) 2020 macbook pro, usb c charging. Over christmas , i didn’t use my laptop and it has completely run out of battery. Since charging it for over an hour this evening, it is still just flashing this symbol. It is also very cold here. I have just bought a new 60W charger this afternoon as i thought my charger may have been broke, but it charges my iphone very fast and there are no issues with the ports. I have tried resetting the SMC. I have a very important exam in a few days and no money to fix this , so advice would be very much appreciated, thanks in advance! 😬😬

External mouse slows down macbook pro

Hey,

I have a 2023 M2 macbook pro on Sequoia 15.2 that strangely starts loosing performance heavily when I connect my USB logitech mouse to it. I have G-Hub but have tried both with and without it, and the performance issues still happen. It's like it starts overloading the CPU so the whole computer starts stuttering when I connect it. Have tried all the different ports, same issue occurs.

Anyone else that have experienced this?

My macbook is 10 years old and "service is recommended" for the battery.

This laptop is about 10 years old. This has happened before and I went to a local guy and he replaced the battery and it started working perfectly fine again. I did this because I thought it would be cheaper than buying a new laptop.

Now its saying the same thing again. Should I just go back and get another battery again, or should I call time of death and buy a new laptop.

I am a student so saving money here is key. Thanks.

help me choose: MacBook Pro vs Air or iPad for uni?

hi important question for uni goers:

i’m starting university soon and need some advice on what device i should get. i’m mainly going to use it for studies so i’m conflicted between: 1. A MacBook (Pro or Air) 2. An iPad (with a keyboard)

i’ll primarily use it for notetaking, assignments, and maybe some light research or presentations. which one would you recommend and why? and what’s been your experience with these devices?

also, if i go for a macbook, do you think the pro is worth the extra cost, or is the air good enough for regular academic purposes?

thanks !! :)

MacBook Air 13 inch 2019 or MacBook Pro 13-Inch 2017 same price, which one to buy?

Hello everyone, I wanna make a purchase of a macbook, I found a MacBook Air 13 inch 2019 with the description bellow :

• Modell: MacBook Air 2019 Retina
• Prozessor: 1,6 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5
• Arbeitsspeicher: 8 GB RAM
• Speicher: 128 GB SSD
• Grafik: Intel UHD Graphics 617
• Display: 13,3-Zoll Retina-Display

And a macbook pro 13 inch 2017 with the description bellow:

Number of charge cycles: 90

Memory: 8GB 2133 MHz

Graphics: Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 1536 MB

Original packaging and charging cable available.

And both of them are the same price which is 350 euro, I'm confused which one should I buy, if there are any recommendation I would be so thankful

M3 Air v M4 Pro - £84 in it

I have access to discounted prices of the MacBook Air and Pro. Between the 15in 16/512 M3 Air and the 14in 16/512 Pro, there's an £84 difference. I don't know if I should save the £84 or not. I enjoy the colour ways and bigger screens of the Air but the power and potential future proofing that comes with Pro is also ideal. However I doubt I will make full use of the M4 chip capabilities.

I can get normal texts, but not verification codes on mac air?

It seems like the way to fix this is to go into the iPhone iMessage settings and enable "text message forwarding" for my computer. However, I lost my phone. Is there a way to enable it from my computer?

Suggestions

I’m sorry, I know there’s a chance this question has been asked 7292e93 times, but hear me out.

I’m in search of a macbook (duh) and these are the things i’ll be using it for:

  • School stuff like presentations, documents, etc. (All the high school stuff)
  • Slight photo editing (I’m in yearbook)
  • Maybe slight gaming, most likely just roblox.

My budget would maybe be like >$500. Any would suffice. And I’m sorry I asked this really stupid questions. Thanks friends!!

Headphone port blocked with a broken jack - help needed please 🙏

Hi guys I have a MacBook Air that I bought used this time last year and I just noticed a couple months ago that there is a broken headphone Jack stuck in the port. I can see the little gold pin inside of the cylinder a few mms inside the port.

I was looking for advice online but nothing I tried worked, I don’t have anything small enough to get inside and get a good grip on the pin to yank it out. I also don’t want to damage the port. Does anybody have any suggestions or advice as I’d really appreciate it- I make music on my laptop and I’ve been using Bluetooth for my speaker but latency delay is a problem.

Alternatively, are there any other accessories like maybe a usb device with headphone support? I know I can purchase an audio interface but hoping I won’t have to.

Many thanks in advance and a happy new year everyone! Thanks 🙏

Suggestions for Optimizing and Personalizing My MacBook

Hey everyone!

I’m using a MacBook Air (M1), and recently, I’ve become more privacy- and security-focused while trying to learn and optimize the macOS experience. My goals are to:

•	Learn more about the OS and personalize my setup for my specific needs.

•	Organize everything for improved workflow and performance.

•	Enhance the longevity, privacy, and security of my MacBook.

Here’s what I’ve done so far, but I still feel like I might be missing something. I’d love your suggestions and feedback!

General Optimization and Maintenance

•	**File management:** I now understand where different types of files are stored and regularly clean up unwanted files using **AppCleaner** for apps. I only install apps from the App Store or Homebrew.

•	**Shortcuts and tricks:** I’ve become proficient with keyboard shortcuts and tricks to improve workflow efficiency.

•	**System settings:** I’ve adjusted several macOS settings for better security.

•	**Activity Monitor:** I know the basics of using it for troubleshooting or force-quitting apps.

•	**System stats:** I use the app **Stats** to monitor system performance.

•	**RAM management:** I try to maintain healthy RAM usage for better performance.

•	**Malware scans:** I run **Malwarebytes** biweekly as a precaution.

•	**Console logs:** When the Mac runs slowly, I check the Console to look for any issues.

•	**Terminal commands:** I’m familiar with basic terminal commands and Homebrew usage.

Apps I Regularly Use

Here’s my go-to app list:

•	**Fantastical**

•	**BetterTouchTool**

•	**Raycast**

•	**Mac Mouse Fix**

•	**Ice**

•	**LuLu** (for network monitoring)

•	**ProtonVPN**

•	**Bitwarden** (password manager)

•	**AppCleaner**

•	**Amphetamine** (to prevent sleep mode)

•	**Dropover** (for drag-and-drop management)

•	**IINA** (media player)

Privacy and Security Measures

I’m not looking to be completely anonymous, but I do want to stay reasonably private and secure while balancing convenience. Here’s what I do:

•	**Browsers:** I use **Arc** or **Zen** for casual browsing and **Firefox (with uBlock Origin)** for more secure use cases.

•	**VPN:** I use **ProtonVPN** when necessary.

•	**Password management:** All passwords are stored in **Bitwarden**, and I use 2FA with an authenticator app.

•	**Compartmentalization:** I keep online activities organized and compartmentalized.

Miscellaneous

Sorry if this seems overboard—I tend to have anxiety about making everything perfect. I’m not super tech-savvy but do my best to learn and apply what’s necessary.

If you think I’ve missed anything important or have any tips on improving privacy, security, and performance, I’d really appreciate your advice!

MacBook for CS

13” M2 MacBook Air 16gb/256gb ($1300) v.s. 13” m4 pro MacBook Pro 24gb/512gb ($2800)

I am a second year cs student, and I’m unsure of the specific path I will take (dev/ml/AI) for now. I keep on receiving polar opposite advice to either get a basic air, or go all the way to pro. Is it worth paying an extra $1500 to get the m4 pro? Or would the m2 air be sufficient?

Any advice would be appreciated xoxo❤️

How to completely delete Boot Camp partition?

Help! I recently just installed Windows through Boot Camp and the installation went well. However, when I was setting macOS as the default startup disk, it randomly went on a loop of logging in (a blank static page with only the login interface), so perhaps there was some problems with the macOS version.

I wanted to reinstall macOS in my Macintosh HD partition but I needed 6GB more of free storage, and I can't possibly clear my storage from the Recovery Mode, so I completely wiped out the Boot Camp partition, thinking I could get that 129GB of space.

However, I wasn't able to expand my Macintosh HD partition because although the Boot Camp partition was wiped out, the partition still exists.

So what I did was install macOS on the Boot Camp partition, install Windows again (in hopes that I can shrink Boot Camp's partition through MiniTool Partition Wizard) and it didn't work. So I was left with 2 volumes under Boot Camp partition (for the "installed macOS" and Windows), and Macintosh HD still can't be expanded.

So I just thought of accessing my files on Macintosh HD partition and free up 6GB of space to be able to reinstall macOS (to get out of the startup loop). But before I reinstalled macOS, I ran Boot Camp Assistant again to remove the Windows partition (because I have Boot Camp partition: macOS & Windows, and Macintosh HD partition: original macOS) so the Boot Camp partition won't be separate anymore. And voila, it worked, and I got into my original macOS.

However, when I tried removing the Boot Camp partition completely through Boot Camp Assistant, it won't let me. Please help!

Question: is there any way to always show menu bar on internal screen with notch but not on external display?

I would like to make the internal screen still display menu bar instead of black when fullscreen as that space can't be used for anything else. However I don't want to have a menu bar when fullscreen on external display
