Has my 9 year old MacBook Pro finally died?

I haven’t used it in about a month and just fired it up to play the sims 2. The battery has an x through it, and it says the maximum capacity is 0mah.

It was fine last time I checked, and it’s on sequoia (open core legacy patcher), so it could be a software issue (?) but considering it’s nearly a decade old I wouldn’t be surprised if it wants to die.

Macbook buying guide for college

Hey everyone,

I’m currently pursuing an MS in Electrical Engineering and looking to get a new MacBook for myself. I’m torn between the MacBook Air M3 and the MacBook Pro M4 (both with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD). Most of my work involves using Cadence on RealVNC, VSCode, and ISE Design Suite. I primarily work on Verilog coding, running synthesis, and related tasks.

I’m really stuck on which one to choose since most of the YouTube reviews I’ve watched haven’t been very clear. Budget is a constraint for me, but if the MacBook Air definitely won’t be sufficient for my tasks, I can stretch my budget to get the Pro.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Is there something I'm missing?

I was watching a luke miani video about the 2010 plastic macbook, and I came across this part of the video(timestamped) https://youtu.be/xQWQTYkr500?t=354&si=lcCA-IXCik-hr683 where he seemingly opens the macbook lid with one finger pressed on the top. How does he do this? I can't seem to do the same thing on my mid-2015 MacBook Pro, unless I'm missing something?

I'm just super confused, I've never seen anyone do that, I just open mine by sticking my thumb inbetween the 2 divets when it's closed 😅😅

budget macbook

so I’ve been wanting a macbook for years but never really had the extra cash to afford one til now, but it still has to be affordable. I found a refurbished macbook air 2020 13 inch, but I’m a little scared to go for it because I dont want it to be slow or overheat. I’d be upgrading from an iPad 9th gen- I mainly plan on using it to take notes, watch movies, and play games like the sims and minecraft (of course lol) is this a good option? or should I try finding a newer model?

Advice for buying first MacBook?

I was looking at purchasing my first MacBook, sadly I just missed the Amazon Black Friday sale. Should I buy the 13in M3 MacBook Air 16/256 for $999 with education savings, or wait for it to possibly go on sale again for Christmas? Another option would be buying the 13in M2 MacBook Air 8/512 for $899. What do you guys think is the best course of action? For context, I’m a casual user (Schoolwork, maybe some video editing, maybe Minecraft) and won’t be pushing the MacBook to any extreme boundaries

Music keeps saying I’m unsubscribed from Apple Music

Every time I open music on my MacBook it keeps saying I’m unsubscribed. I am unsubscribed but it keeps saying it every time I open it. It’s getting annoying having it pop up every time.

Dock Recommendation: 2x HDMI/DP + 1 USB-C Display

Hi all,

I’m looking for a docking station that supports:

  • 2x HDMI/DP + 1 USB-C display output.

I found the StarTech DK31C3MNCRUE, but it only provides 60W power, which isn’t sufficient for a MacBook Pro (usually needs ~90W).

Any recommendations for similar or better docks? Thanks!

Lost my notes

I tried to sync my phone and mac notes as for some reason they weren't syncing. So I bought iCloud storage. Then I notice that I'm getting my phone's notes on my mac, which was good, until I realised that now I'm ONLY getting my phone's notes on my mac, and my mac notes have fully disappeared. Any ideas where they could be hidden? Or are they just gone forever.

Edit: just to correct, I lost my Mac notes that weren't synced to my phone. The ones that were, so from a few weeks ago, are still there. The lost notes are also not in recently deleted, and no I don't have time machine set up

Hands down the best machine that's out there

I have an MBP m1 2021 14inch.
Use it for programming, research and vulnerability research and a lot of automation doing all kinds of things.
It is by far the best fucking machine out there !
I also own a dell windows 5k $ office machine and my own dell precision top of the line hardware for all work related based on the tasks at hand.
And MBP just makes them look like kids playing in the mud.
I was running some pretty intense tasks that requires a lot of data ingestion and building a database.I am talking data in the vicinity of 200-500GB and data points that are close to 1-2 million entries.
The windows and linux native machine are still working out since the last one hour.
And the MBP did that under 10 mins and moved on with other work loads did that and is waiting to submit more stuff.

I don't know what the newer top of the line mac hardware is now capable of.
In my 25 years of career where the early 90's were filled with floppy disks and so on. I've pretty much used a lot that's out there but nothing comes closer to MBP.
Note: I am not a gamer so i'd skip that area.

MBP you have my respect !!

Beast !

*Help!* Buy MacBook M3 Max or M4 Max (both 48gb Ram 1TB SSD 16")

Hi! im very lost whether to get the M3 or M4 max, I do Heavy video editing for music videos in premiere pro and after effects, events, as well as photography and graphic design.

Is the M4 Max worth it? I’ve been comparing the M4 and M3 for a while, but I’m having trouble understanding the differences. I’m upgrading from an M1 Air with 8GB RAM, so this is already a huge step up. Is it worth spending an extra $800–$900 (from the $3,400 M3 Max) for the M4 Max, considering I’d get the same RAM and storage as the M3? I’d appreciate any advice before making such a big purchase

Would PC3-8500S ram work on an old 2010 macbook?

I'm thinking of upgrading my old polycarbonate macbook mid 2010 to 8gb ram, I saw online it is cheaper to get 2 x 4gb of pc3 8500S ddr3 1066 MHz ram from Crucial.

Would this work in the macbook?

I've also heard reports that as long as you have 1 module containing the PC3-8500 ram stick, then you can put any ddr3 so-dimm ram stick in the other module and it would work - no matter the frequency speed in MHz, but I'm not sure if it's true.

Messages on Sequoia is borderline unusable

Ever since upgrading my M1 Max MBP to Sequoia the messages app has become a nightmare to use and I'm specifically talking about typing. When typing out a message it slows to a crawl the longer the message gets.

Here is an example:

https://www.threads.net/@lth0ms0n/post/DB83gLWCXvO

I've searched far and wide online for a solution and some have suggested disabling their antivirus, while others have suggested enabling Apple Intelligence if you haven't, or disabling it if you have. I have zero antivirus software installed and I refuse to open Pandora's box with Apple Intelligence. Call me paranoid but I don't want to give AI access to my computer's data and regardless I shouldn't have to enable it to fix this problem.

Has ANYONE found a solution to this?

help on what mac to buy

hi guys so im looking to buy a used macbook in my area so i can use it for school but im not sure what year would be appropriate for me. I'll be using the macbook for doing essays and and graphic design, all i want is for it to be light weight and easy for me to bring everywhere. so would 2012, 2015, or 2017 macbooks be okay? (its what people are currently selling at the moment) I am on a tight budget as well so if i could get some advice id appreciate it!!

Is keyboard rattle normal?

Got a MacBook Air m2 base model recently and I noticed that like half of the keys have a slight rattle/wobble, some more than others. And the overall sensation is that it feels cheap.

Does anyone have the same problem?

I just bought the M1 MacBook Air and it's been the best decision I made.

I've never previously owned a MacBook before so this was an unique experience for me, but so far it's been really great for everything I do. I love how it doesn't turn into a furnace when I run multiple apps on it and I love how quiet and comfortable it is. It genuinely has been so useful to me as a student and I'm glad I made this purchase. Only slight problem is that Visual Studio got retired on the Mac platform, but this is more of a niche problem for me as a compsci student. Other than that - incredible device. Has anyone else made a switch from Windows to a similar device? How are your experiences so far?

First time MacBook. What do I get?

I want a new NoteBook and literally EVERYONE recommended me a MacBook. I never owned one so I have no idea what to get (always used Windows). My last Apple device what an iPhone 6 16GB and an iPad Air 1.

What MacBook should I get? I need it mainly for Travel and sometimes in Public like Coffeeshop and Libraries.

I make YouTube Shorts / TikTok Clips in 4k 30FPS and some Longform content maximum 10 Minutes 4k 30FPS in DaVinci Studio. I have my Gaming PC for other stuff. Ryzen 9 7950X and RX 7900 XTX.

My Budget is around 2000 Euros. Screen size doesn't matter same as weight. (German Layout)

I'm also open to switch my Samsung Android Eco System to an Apple over the next year one if necessary.

Looking for great Thunderbolt hub

I’m looking for a Thunderbolt 4 hub with a bunch of downstream ports - at least 4 but prefer more. This is for use, basically as a docking station, with a 13” M3 Macbook Air, which has a magsafe power connector + 2 downstream Thunderbolt ports. To be used with multiple external SSDs, iphone, video camera, usb-c > DisplayPort cable, charging for keyboard & mouse, and various other devices to be named later (e.g. a downstream dongle with USB-A ports for legacy devices).

Suggestions, please!!!
