App for easily editable wallpapers? Does this exist? Could this be developed?

My idea / wish: a Todo list as wallpaper. That can easily be opened, changed, saved and then is my (adjusted) wallpaper again. Or: Kanban board (?). Or: Work Breakdown Structure (?). Or: etc.

I experimented with an Excel sheet that I saved as a photo and then used as wallpaper. But the procedure of getting the exact dimensions, changing and saving etc. is rather cumbersome.

There are also apps that hide your desktop icons (I use Hide Icons). They do that by simply taking a picture/screenshot of your wallpaper and use that as an overlay. Technically something similar could probably function as an adjustable wallpaper.

So: Does something like this exist? Could it be developed? Are there developers here that are inspired by this idea? Could this be made cross-platform (Windows)?

A little explanation about encryption and apps

There are 3 level of encryption that an app can use that sync over the Internet:

  1. Encryption in transit
  2. Encryption at rest
  3. End-to-emd encryption

Encryption in transit is usually handled by SSL/TLS and ensures the data is encrypted between their server and your computer.

Encryption at rest means your data on the company's server is encrypted.

End-to-end encryption means that the data is encryted before it leaves your device and stays encrypted at all times till it lands on another device you own, where the data can then be decrypted.

The ONLY way to prevent a company from seeing your data is using end-to-end encryption.

Encryption at rest is great and all, but the decryption keys are help by the company. They may have all sorts of procedures in place over who can decrypt your data, but they can still decrypt it.

Shottr - Any way to get true white color for text/boxes/etc.?

I love this app, and I bought the license for it. The only thing that aggravates me is when I want to add text or draw a box, there is no true white color option. The closest is an off-white. That means when I add text, it always has a colored background that doesn't fit.

Is there any way to either get white or remove the background color for a text addition on a screenshot?

Monarch v0.6 just released: Custom Themes! Lifetime licenses 33% off, Student discounts available - Note capture, Clipboard history, color picker & more

https://preview.redd.it/00dhjp07lt0d1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=35f6291801fc7f6f225f55c2b88f2992b5071691

Hi r/macapps!

A big update for Monarch just released! Custom Themes! This has been a feature requested surprisingly often, and since I had a free weekend, I added support for it along with a really nice theme builder, giving you control over colors, hues, opacity, etc. You can actually do quite a bit of customization already!

With the introduction of Custom Themes, Monarch takes another big step closer to being a great launcher for everyone, driven and owned by users instead of shareholders and VCs. The next big feature will be Monarch AI with bring-your-own-key (BYOK) support to give you more control and free us from the ever-growing list of AI-subscription apps.

Besides the fact that people kept asking for Custom Themes, there was something that really bothered me about the Custom Themes in Raycast:

  1. You have to subscribe and pay endlessly for custom themes
  2. If you love a theme, but you stop paying 5 years from now you'll lose access to the theme, even if you created it
  3. Even for trial of Raycast, you have to enter your credit card likely because they hope you'll forget

So far, Monarch has Unlimited Clipboard History, A floating notes 2.0 that supports markdown with cmd+dot, and now Custom Themes. It's not all of Raycast Pro yet, but I genuinely believe that with your support a significantly better launcher than anything we've seen to date is possible, fully private, no subscription, and you'll actually OWN it, not VCs or shareholders.

There's still a long way to go to catch up, but the first announcement for Monarch was in February of this year and the majority of its development has been part-time. With your support, I can develop at an even faster pace and make it the launcher we all deserve!

Speaking of support, huge thank you to everyone who has given it a try thus far, especially those who have had to wait a bit for new features to release or new updates to tweak things to make it more usable. It definitely would not have gotten this far with the kind people in r/macapps!

For student discounts, just reach out to me via email using your school email address. For a very limited time, the licenses are true Lifetime licenses—meaning that til version 3.0, 5.0 and beyond you'll never have to pay a dime for another upgrade!

Ultimately, the goal is a launcher that combines the best features of Alfred, Raycast, & Launchbar with other new features and make it affordable and accessible to everyone!

EDIT: I wasn't expecting so much support! Thank you to people that are purchasing multiple licenses! I am about to update the website, but here I wanted to share that there is now a bundle (Buy one, get another 50% off) and student discounts do apply to the bundle! Here is the bundle link, which will be added to the website soon: https://buy.stripe.com/dR66pl3rC5Ib9ck4gi. If anyone has purchased Monarch today, you can still email me at rmdashrfv@hey.com to get your 50% off one more license! If you are a student, please do so from your same student email!

BusyCal for Students

Hello, I am a Year 11 Student in Australia, and I recently stumbled apon BusyCal. I've been looking for a better calender app than the stock one, and fantastical didn't have a one time payment option. However when I looked at BusyCal's pricing, I realised I wouldn't be able to afford it. Is there any discounts or promocodes for BusyCal other than the $10 discount for students?

MarsEdit - A Blogging Editor and Publisher

People are getting tired of corporate controlled social media and turning the clock back to the early days of the web and starting their own blogs. Free and low cost blog platforms like Micro.blog, Tumblr and WordPress make it easy to get started. Most blogging platforms have browser based editors but you can have a much better experience with a lot more features if you used a dedicated blog editor like MarsEdit from Red Sweater software. Other paid editors like Scrivener and Ulysses are available or you can use free software like Obsidian and plugins to publish. I personally use MarsEdit because I like being able to switch back and forth between Markdown and WYSIWYG. It has word processing features like search and replace and it puts the focus on writing by providing a typewriter mode. Using photos is a breeze with several different ways to include and upload media. Once you get it set up, publishing to the web is done with the push of a button.

MarsEdit isn't cheap. A lifetime license is $59.95 with discounts for upgrades. It's also available on Setapp.

App that can auto-sort files?

Are there any apps, free or paid, with a straightforward enough UI to the degree that even someone not that technologically inclined can maneuver it with ease - whilst it's also actually able to retrieve files from selected folders to sort them into separate folders for each file format?

Trying to sort out an insanely cluttered MacBook with no folder system, as well as some external HDDs with the same issue. Been searching around but every app I have come across so far seem to either need more detail-oriented instructions input by me than I have time for, or they just straight up doesn't sort anything at all.

Closest I feel I've come to finding what I'm looking for is an app called "Shade", but I didn't manage to move all the files in the list it returned of, for example, .jpg files.

Might be a dumb question, but genuinely not that up to date on the kind of indie apps that aren't available through the official App Store.

Right way to Backup Mac Mail? Can I just copy /Users/<<Name>>/Library/Mail?

I store my important mail in an 'On my Mac' folder (Not cloud connected). I regularly "Export Mailbox" to get a .mbox file that I can backup. As the mailbox has grown, this process has become long and unreliable.

Could I just backup the whole mail database at /Users/<<Name>>/Library/Mail? Is this the only thing I would need to copy to recreate my Mac mail mailboxes?

Your advice and experience are appreciated,

I made Mac app to search my images and videos with AI

I keep a lot of images and videos on my Mac (mostly screenshots + images/videos in my Downloads folder) , but I have so many that they're hard to search. The Mac Photos app only supports search for stuff in your Photos Library, so I built an app to search all my non-Apple photos.

Including a demo if you're curious. Happy to send you a copy if you're interested in trying it out.

What can I use in place of Microsoft Remote Desktop?

I use a Mac at work but need to RDP into a couple of PCs all the time. I use Microsoft Remote Desktop because that is what I have but I'm wondering if there is something better that still won't require me to install a anything on the client machine or require someone to be at the client machine to click on anything.

Cleano - a cleaner app for iOS/macOS developers

Hey everyone,

We're excited to announce that Cleano is finally here! 🎉 After 13 months of hard work, 10,385 lines of code, and 282 hours of dedication, we are proud to share Cleano with you.

https://preview.redd.it/vqkni1ecam0d1.png?width=2880&format=png&auto=webp&s=32e5644759536eedf6f3bc2229d10f3c9c2eaf29

What is Cleano?

Cleano is designed to be your ultimate companion for cleaning various stuff after Xcode and popular package managers.

Key Features:

  • Simulators cleanup. It's a correct cleanup via 'simctl' so you even don't need to restart Xcode for it to take effect
  • SPM repos cache. Swift PM stores github repos for packages separately and never removes them unless you ask it via cli.
  • Derived Data, a first thing you try to fix weird Xcode linking issues :)

Among other features: Carthage caches. archives cleanup and some more.

You can get Cleano in MacAppStore here: ‎Cleano

And leave feedback: https://deszip.github.io/Cleaner-Tracker

We hope you find Cleano as useful as we intended it to be. Your feedback is invaluable to us, so please share your thoughts and suggestions.

CleanShot X 4.7 Released With New Features

CleanShot X has over 50 features, including several new ones in the just released version, 4.7

  • Ability to resize screen shots
  • Cursor automatically resizes to match text found in the image
  • 10 new background gradients wallpapers, as well as custom wallpapers
  • Saved presets for screenshots
  • Autoformats text when entered on a screenshot
  • Hide desktop now hides widgets too
  • Pinned screenshots can be toggled visible and hidden

There are a lot of options for screenshot utilities on the Mac, from the built in ability to capture images that's built in to the OS, to the full featured freemium app Shottr by indie developer Electric Endeavors for still images to even more powerful still and video capture products like SnagIt by TechSmith. The product I personally use, CleanShot X hits the sweet spot in the middle. It may be over kill if you just need to screenshot memes for social media, but if you are a blogger, need screenshots for work documents or deal with tech support regularly, you should take advantage of the 30-day money back guarantee and try it out.

See full review for more features CleanShot X web site

CleanShot X is $29 for the current version with one year of updates and 1GB of cloud storage. It is also available as part of SetApp.

MakeItHome for macOS is now open source

Hello,

MakeItHome, available on the App Store, has its source code finally available on GitHub: https://github.com/Geckos-Ink/MakeItHome

I have difficulties to complete the 2.0 release, so I hope that someone interested on the project can help me to implement and improve already existing aspects of this UI extender. Finally, the facts that to work the app requires the screen recording permission can undermine user trust. I hope that, in this way, this app can directly demonstrate that is secure for user's privacy.

You are free to clone it, compile it and try it by yourself.

ASAP I'll write the documentation (and I'll tidy up the code).

I just hope that this post doesn't pass as spam, because I'm quite exasperated by the discrimination of reddit moderators towards those who talk about their creations.

Thank you!

Help

I’ve just bought a second hand IMac which the previous owner set back to factory settings. So I’m happily going through the log in process when it comes to Pass word. Now I have an Apple 14 phone, so I already have an account with a password but Apple with its usual brilliance won’t accept my old password, or a new password. Can anyone suggest any way of getting past this stupid restriction, it’s driving me insane.

Mac Image Organizer Suggestions

This topic is definitely beaten to death, but asking again in context of specific requirements

  • Multiple panels for folder and favorites so that files can be easily moved around. One panel for folders makes it difficult to move file from one location to another.
  • Fast RAW viewing from local and remove drives
  • Ability to create favorites
  • Filter files by date, rating, etc
  • Ability to open Apple Photos library and make changes
  • Perpetual licence model

I currently can do my work with Photo Mechanic but don't like the price and licensing mode. I can work with xnView, but it has only one folder panel. Tried raw power, love it but can not move files around. Favorites shows full path and does not provide tree structure.

The intent is to use the tool to organize photos from last 20 years, cull them and curate before they are passed to Capture One.

Any suggestions?

Following is an example of multi folder feature. I favorite the years which can exapand into folders and then I am looking at navigator scanning through my disks and drop them into the folders in favorite. This actually moves the files without having to scroll up and down.

Adding more details:

  1. Photo mechanic (what I want) allows dragging files and folders around:
  2. Raw power has everything that I need. But it does not allow moving files around. I can not drag files from folder to favorites.
  3. Love adobe bridge as its free (but it has one folder panel)
  4. xnView is like raw power and free. It has everything, but it does not allow dragging folders and files into favorite locations.

Summary nad update:

If you have photo moving requirements and managing photos on disk than a catalog then

  1. Photo mechanic: works great and is proven... but they suck good money
  2. Adobe bridge: multiple folders are not supported but multiple windows are supported, so tile 2 windows and play around. You can do the same with graphic converter and few other tools
  3. u/Biddy_Impeccadillo suggested photo supreme. License is steep 160$ but the tool looks very promising. Can easily move files around between folders and favorite, interface is very modern and neat. Going to try for 30 days and decide.

Are there discount codes/referrals/student discounts that I can use with Photo Supreme?

Thank you gang for helping out!
