A funny experience with Paragon NTFS

Hey there, My friend bought a Macbook Pro last year. Since she works with Windows Ntfs drives a lot, I recommended her getting Paragon NTFS. It did its job however after a while a funny thing started happening, namely many fat 32-formatted devices weren't recognized by the OS at all. It was annoying but I had no time to help her, but when she received Magmo, an iPhone call recorder and it also wasn't recognized by macOS I started wondering what can be wrong? What sits the closest to the hard drive? Of course all suspicion fell onto Paragon NTFS, after I uninstalled it, all previously unrecognized devices have started behaving well. Did any of you face such an issue?

I have tried various different inputs however the "hide all windows" function in BTT does not work regardless of trigger. Does anyone know a reason for this?

How is Notchnook on battery?

Hey, I was thinking of getting Notchnook as it looks really cool and I like the Airdrop feature where you can drag the file to you notch and Airdrop it a lot.

I was just wondering, how is it on battery? I know that every time you hover over the notch and it does any sort of animation it spikes in memory usage, or at least it did a while ago. How is it now? Will my battery life be drastically different if I use this app. Thank you!

SSH Terminal Does Not Work Macos

Using MacBook Air 2020. Open up an OpenVPN connection, then try to ssh into a Solaris server (v11.4). Get an error, "Unable to negotiatewith 172.x.x.x port 22: no matching key exchange found...."

I also get this error in Win 11, using cmd to ssh into the server. Win11, with putty works fine, though.

Is there an alternative ssh terminal app that I can use for the mac?

iCollections - A Desktop Centric Workflow Manager Similar to the Classic Dragthing

iCollections

The late, great Mac app, Dragthing reached end of life in 2019. It was a point and click workflow manager for those who preferred that type of workflow over apps like Alfred and Launchbar. The developer of Dragthing was an Apple employee to worked on the original implementation of the dock in Mac OS X. He created Dragthing as an alternate version of what the dock could have been. It was an immensely popular app among power users and won many awards in its 24 years on the market (1995-2019).

iCollections by developer Grzegorz Staszczyk provides an experience much like Dragthing once did. It provides a a variety of desktop interfaces for various ways to view content and control your Mac. The interface is based on what the app calls collections. These are windows or drawers containing any one of the following elements:

  • Disks (including external storage and mounted disk images)
  • Access to dock items from the menu bar
  • Folders (e.g., Downloads, Documents) - use tabs to see multiple folders in one window
  • Drop shelf for temporary file storage
  • Photo frame (with slide shows)
  • Web view using iOS user agent for any website
  • Open processes
  • Open Windows
  • Trash
  • Calendar

Every element has multiple customization options including color, size, position and opacity. You can use custom icons, even for native Mac applications, something you cannot do in Finder. You can combine keyboard shortcuts with point and click functions to summon collections when you need them. To use a folder as a launcher, just add application aliases to it.

iCollections can be downloaded from the developer's website to take advantage of a free trial. It can also be downloaded from the Mac App Store. The cost is:

  • Monthly Subscription$2.99
  • Annual Subscription$12.99
  • Lifetime License$39.99

Text to Speech / Voice Reader apps that can use API keys to AI services like ElevenLabs or OpenAI?

With the quality of AI voices now I'd love an app that can read whatever I give it without having to go to a site and manually paste it in, ideally something with good OS/browser integration.

And to be clear, I'm talking about Text to Speech, not Speech to Text. So the reverse of MacWhisper et al.

Looking for an app which mirrors monitor splitting from DisplayFusion on Windows

I've moved from Windows to Mac recently.

I have a 5120x1440 ultra wide monitor as my main and a 1920x1080 as second monitor.

On Windows I used DisplayFusion's monitor profiles to split the ultra wide into 2 "virtual" screens, for a total of 3 screens: 2160x1440, 2160x1440, 1920x1080.

With this enabled, fullscreen actions would then maximise to the virtual screen.

DisplayFusion also had a button & shortcut key to move to next window, which would then rotate between all 3 screens.

Is there a window manager for Mac which replicates this splitting behaviour?

Disappointed with Alfred

I got a new MacBook recently and decided to switch from Raycast I was using on my previous MacBook. However, nothing seems to work properly. Many workflows are broken (or at least those I need). It's kinda sad, because I purchased the Powerpack and can't use it tho the fullest. Does anyone have a similar experience?

What is the best media player for high quality Media?

Hey, everyone.

I just got my first MacBook ever, and I need help with some app choices. I watch a lot of movies and TV series, and most of them are 4K HDR Dolby Vision 10-bit color files, so I want to get the most out of the video quality, especially for good HDR and color representation.

So, I researched and these are the most common media players that I found:

  1. IINA
  2. Movist
  3. Infuse
  4. Optimus
  5. MPV
  6. VCL
  7. Elmedia

note: I am more than willing to pay for the best one

Application replacing Playback in the top menu.

I don't like this native option in the top menu that controls what is currently playing. It's too small for me and I don't feel comfortable using it.
Do you know of any app that could be used instead? Something that is bigger, nicer done, maybe popping out from behind the edge of the monitor? I don't know, something other than what is available in the system.

Why do dictation apps exist ?

Hey guys,

I have a genuine question. I wanna know why dictation apps on Mac exist. Is there any specific benefit using these apps?

What are some good use cases for it that would make you want to pay rather than use the built-in function?

I feel like I'm missing something here lol

Thanks.

Note/ToDo syncing between Mac and IOS App Recommendations

When I was on IOS solely, I used Google Keep and Google Tasks that worked well. The native iOS apps I use already for personal use and wanted something separate for business. When I went to Mac, both those Google apps I used on IOS were browser faced on MAC, not an easy and quick app to interface with.

Can you guys recommend a good note/task/todo application in one that works well between iOS and MAC?

I recently bought side notes for MAC which I like but come to find out the iOS version is separate and low reviews with high price tag.

Before i dump another $10 for iOS version, wondering if better app is available.

Thanks for the recommendations.

Favorite App for Syncing the Contents of Two Folders (Source to Destination, or Update both)

I often am working with folder structures that are local, and ones that are on drives.

https://preview.redd.it/0nlmkfvegx5e1.png?width=587&format=png&auto=webp&s=88696f15b72cfc87d247b5ab5ee354dd81a39c31

I am wondering what peoples favourite backup/sync tool is?

I use CCC a lot, but I sometimes I only want it to add the new files from location A onto location B, and not change anything on location B. However the app really isn't designed to do that it seems. It will make the folders match perfectly and move the stuff that's not in both to "safety net"

Sometimes I have an A and a B folder that are close to being the same, but both location has files that are unique to it, and I sometimes want to update both, or just update one.

I've been testing DirEqual and I'm not too thrilled about it and not ready to invest in that one if there is better options.

In the past I've used Resilio or Carbon Copy.

ClipEcho - Instant spoken summaries of videos, documents, articles and more

Hey everyone, I wanted to share a preview of an app I've been building over the past weeks, ClipEcho.

It’s a macOS menu bar app that turns your clipboard content (including URLs) into spoken summaries, covering everything from online articles and documents to YouTube videos and code snippets.

A few months back, I was using the Kagi Summarizer and loved it, but it lacked support for local documents and code explanations. That’s when I decided to build ClipEcho, finding spoken summaries super helpful for my workflow. You can listen to some examples on the website or try it out for free, no credit card required.

I find it super helpful for anything that has a clickbait title, where I kinda want to know what's going on but not spend 10 minutes reading or watching it. I’d love to hear what you think and if you find this useful :)

cache / safari

Hello,

I am trying to return to Safari, it is delicate to go back to a browser with some shortcomings compared to the habits one might have with Firefox, for example.

I am missing, for instance, an extension that allows me to clear the cache of a particular site. Do you know if this exists?

and what are the most useful extensions and what do they provide?

Finally, how to prevent the Safari window from closing when the last tab is closed (despite pinned tabs)

Looking for screen recording and editing app

Hi mac people, i'd like to hear about your experience with screen recording software. I bought screenflow 6 some years ago but it wants me to pay to update to the latest version and 6 no longer works with the new macs (audio driver).

Before i pay for that i want to see if there is another option. here's my wish list:

  • One time purchase (no monthly recurring fees)
  • Record screen or area
  • At least some basic editing functionality
  • Exports the file in multiple formats

I've tried a few that i saw recommended in other posts but they didn't really meet my requirements. Also have OBS of course but it really can only make the recording so i still need something else to edit. I would be ok with a recommendation for an editor.

Let me know if you have recommendations or i should just bite the bullet and update screenflow.

Cleaning Mac before switching to another one?

Hey folks,

I am downgrading from my Mac Studio to a Mac Mini and would like to clean my Mac of all remnants of old Programs/Tools or other Temp files.

What's the best solution? I did clean out the Folders manually already. Is that fine maybe?
I am not a big fan of cleaning tools, since most of them are snakeoil mostly.

Thanks

WinDirStat but for macOS

Hi,

I was previously using CleanMyMac to find large files, but the new version is a piece of... (its only my personal opinion), and I plan on stop paying them. I am looking for a program that does a simple thing, display largest folders, and largest files in those folders.

I tried DaisyDisk, Grant Perspective but they are inaccessible to VoiceOver (I'm blind and so the app needs to be accessible with VO). Any other decent options?

Best VPN for Mac?

I never had a VPN, and am wondering what the best, most elegant, cheapest solution is. Would be awesome if it wasn't a subscription but I may be too hopeful!

UPDATE: I went with Windscribe for $29/yr. Thanks for all the input! Any windscribe tip? So far running great on my mac studio but can i set it up on my wife's MBP and our phones? Also which protocol is best?

Keyboard cleaning / window sizer and manager free app

https://www.withmarko.com/one-menu

I found this free downloadable app that lets you block keyboard interactions so you can clean crumbs and things on your screen or keyboard. I have it on my laptop and it also blocks interactions with the dynamic touch bar so you can clean it. The mouse is still movable and click events still work to ensure you can re-enable the keyboard.
It also has a CPU, memory, and disk activity visuals including percentage of use as well as using green/yellow/red rings for extra indicator. A window manager allows you to size your windows and organize them easily with keyboard shortcuts. Everything is set to be usable out of the box but allows for customization.

Sits nicely in the top menubar.

I'm a developer myself and really appreciate the simplicity of this app, the walk through at the beginning, and the ease of download. Hats off to the attention to Marko for this application @ withmarko

I installed this using Chrome on a MacOS Sequoia 15.0.1

mtop - A Resource Monitor for Crowded Menu Bars

mtop

I regularly check MacMenuBar.com for new additions. Today i found a nice little app called mtop. It's a monitor for each CPU core, your GPU and your RAM. It also provides PIDs for running processes. Apps like iStat Menus and Stats are great at doing this, but they take up far too much room in the menu bar for my taste. I just want a single icon I can click on to get the information I want. I don't need a heads-up display.

There isn't much to configure in mtop. You can choose one of eight different themes. Clicking a button reveals the running processes, which are hidden by default. The app is available in the Mac App Store for $.99.

Migrate Copy 'em database to Raycast?

Hey,

I recently got a new Mac and I am reinstalling everything. One thing I would like to do is to cut down on the amount of apps I install. Since I have Raycast with a clipboard history, I'd like to get rid of Copy 'em, the previous clipboard manager I used. However I have countless items stored in it which I don't wanna lose. Is there anyway I can solve it?

Dropping my 9th free app today - A file merger to PDF or prompt

https://reddit.com/link/1habn5y/video/z7nr6vb97u5e1/player

I'm in the dumb but fun process of building 26 free macOS apps, one for each letter of the alphabet. Today I finished (U) Uno, you drop files (almost any file type) or folders and they merge into either a PDF or a prompt for AI. I'm currently improving the performance when dropping more than 10-20 files.

Github link to download:https://github.com/nuance-dev/uno

You can also direct-download it with the rest of my apps in nuanc.me

I'm almost done with 2 more apps, a universal file converter (drop an audio - it turns to video, drop an image it turns to PDF, etc) which is taking a while, and a release date tracker

Please help me find the perfect window management tool for my use case.

I need a window management tool which remembers and automatically moves a particular set of windows according to the monitor attached. Remember the window placement and sizes, which display had which windows. Should also work with Sidecar.

Another use case is, if stage manager is enabled, remember which Desktop/Display had which apps open and arrange them accordingly.

Idk if this is possible with stage manager, but I sometimes have a lot of windows sometimes and Stage manager has been the only way for me to have some window organization. If there is a better alternative, I am open to it. But it would be amazing if it works well with Stage manager.

It would be amazing if a single app can do this, otherwise can look into two different apps.

I've used Moom but it hasn't been perfect, it's unable to remember the display attached.
