MacBook 13” Air 2024 with 16GB, enough for editing photos and videos?

Hello,

I’m coming from a windows pc and want to make the shift to a MacBook and wondering if the air 2024 with 16GB would be strong enough to handle this. Thanks.

So… I’ve finally joined the club.

Been thinking about one for a while, and I finally pulled the trigger. MacBook Air M2. Brand spanking new, took advantage of the $850 deal on Amazon.

Coming from an HP with an 11th gen i3…

Working has never felt so good.

Fragility of screens

Is this widespread? I’ve absolutely babied this m3 pro, had it since the start of the year and there is micro scratches and pinpricks from DUST, I do not eat over the laptop and I always keep it clean with a damp Microfibre and there has never been anything caught in between.

I know in the past there have been recalls due to screen errors and I’m praying that happens again.

No way in hell am I comfortable paying £2600 for a laptop that’s screen self destructs? My partners windows laptop screen is spotless after years of abuse

Display repair options for M2 Macbook Air? (injuredgadgets reputability?)

Hey all. I damaged my Macbook Air's screen last night and I'm weighing my options for repairing it/replacing it. A replacement screen from iFixIt is apparently $600 USD, and my local repair shop says they'll repair it for $600 CAD with an Apple display, although they said it would be cheaper to use a third-party display for the repair instead. Finally, I'm looking at other options for screens and I heard about injuredgadgets, and their screens seem to be really cheap, [the one I'm looking at is $335](https://www.injuredgadgets.com/premium-lcd-screen-and-digitizer-assembly-for-macbook-air-13-m2-a2681-2022-space-gray/), although I'm unsure if that's USD or CAD. I can 100% do self-repairs, but I'm trying to figure out the best option. Is injuredgadgets reputable? How do their aftermarket Macbook displays compare to the original? Thanks in advance!

MacBook Pro M1 purchase suggestions please

Hi all, I have been thinking about purchasing a MacBook Pro for a long time (I have never used one). My requirements are heavy browsing, watching content, development (like intense coding, ML projects) and occasional video editing.

So in the place I live, I saw some really nice deals for “demo” MacBooks and these are the options I have:

  1. MacBook M1 Pro 16 inch - 16GB, 512GB SSD but with 3 years of warranty (AppleCare+) for about 1560 USD
  2. MacBook M1 Pro 16 inch - 32GB, 512GB SSD but with 1 year of warranty for about 1620 USD

My confusion is in the trade off between extra 2 years of warranty and the extra 16GB of RAM and both come in almost the same price!

I’m really unable to make my mind up as I think that extra warranty would be useful since it’s a demo laptop and I’m not purchasing it from Apple or famous retailers like Amazon/Walmart/Bestbuy etc.

And the extra RAM is also very pleasing as I am planning to use the Mac for the next 5-7 years.

Which one should I go for? Your answers could be really valuable. Thanks!

Should I get 8GB or 16GB RAM for M3 MacBook Air as a CS student?

I'm a Computer Science student and I'm planning to buy the new M3 MacBook Air. I need some advice on whether I should go for the 8GB or 16GB RAM model.

Here are my typical use cases:

  • Web development (React)
  • Machine learning projects
  • React Native development with the iOS simulator
  • Typically, I have 5-10 Chrome tabs open

I'm currently a Windows user and have never used a MacBook before but always wanted to switch to it, so I'm also curious about the overall experience switching to macOS for my workflow.

After getting my first ever MacBook , is it worth going full apple ?

Hello,

I've just got my first ever MacBook and I'm amazed by it.

I also didn't have a performant pc before so the comparaison ain't that fair.

Anyway, I also have a shitty android phone that I bought more than 3 years ago and I'll need to get a new one soon (battery , camera .. ).

I always had an opinion that iphones were "overrated" but I think it was my bad experiences with some earlier iphones.

Does having an iphone and ipad make your productivity go up and life easier , that owning an Android phone/tablet ?

Thanks

MBP early 2015

I got a 2015 Macbook pro that's been in storage for some time now and it's really slow. I'm thinking of swapping the ssd since I got an extra 500gb samsung laying around. I read that I'd need an adapter to use a normal m.2 nvme; would an adapter on Ali express do or should I get something branded on Amazon. ( I'd rather do Ali do to the fact that shipping on Amazon costs 2x-3x than the product itself.

And I was also told that not all ssd would work with the latest OS. Is that true or?

Water damage?

A friend spilled a bowl of cereal onto my laptop by the charger ports and I had no idea until it already dried. It wouldn’t charge at all until I picked out the residue from the port. Then it charged fine for about a week and then it stopped charging completely for a while. It now changes again but only with my cord at an angle. And the back of my laptop became discolored (see picture). Is it water damaged? Do I need a new laptop?

My MBP M1 chip display issue

Someone recently picked up my MBP from the screen and it developed a crack on the display. I tried going to apple’s service center and they quoted me about 60,000 inr. I found out there were markets that sold genuine parts (new and refurb) for about half of that. How can I confirm that the display they are selling is original ?

PS - they are offering the standard warranty of 90days, same as apple’s service center.

Dilemma

I'm currently using a MacBook Air M1 purchased new in June 2022, but a few weeks ago, I started using DaVinci Resolve 18 as I'm also into video editing. However, it often freezes for a few seconds and also lags, so I went online and checked a few forums to see what they said, and all of them recommended a Pro. Problem is, I can't afford one brand new.

So here's my question: is it worth reselling my 2022 Air to get an older Pro (~2019) or will I just have the same problems there?

spilled coffee on my keyboard

hey so i accidentally spilt a very small amount of coffee on my macbook air (m1, 2020) keyboard and now some of the keys seem to be connected. i spilled the coffee over only some keys in the lower right corner, so the command and option keys and the right side of the space bar and now every time i press the space bar, a plus is typed and when i press the enter key (over which no coffee was spilled) it types an ä (because my keyboard has a german layout) is there anything i can do to fix it?

Where can i get this lcd plate? (M1 A2338)

I was attempting to ldc-only repair a m1 macbook pro for a friend. Unfortunately the replacement panel we got was defective so the seller returned it for free. However, i left this piece on the screen I returned unfortunately… I couldnt find anything to source it as people usually just pull it off the original screen when doing this repair. Does anyone know where i can get one, or does anyone perhaps have a broken screen assembly for one of these laying around? Thank you guys!

Curious about the RAM in a 14/16" M1 Max MacBook Pro. I found an iFixit guide showing the M1 Max motherboard which has a max RAM capacity of 64GB using two 32GB Samsung chips labled in orange. Does Samsung make 64GB chips for a 128GB MacBook Pro, and can they be soldered/modded into the motherboard?

New MacBook user ; frustrating issues

I'm new to apple eco system and two months ago I got my first ever MacBook pro m3 max 64GB RAM. I'm using latest OS Version. I'm coming from Windows and Linux(Ubuntu and Manjaro) and normally a power user of OS.

Now it comes to MacOS, the UI looks good, no doubt in that but it has unlimited issues. I'm listing them below as they were mostly unheard of even in Ubuntu.

-Microphone stops working time to time and no it's not a hardware issue because it starts working when I run sudo ps auxc | grep audio | awk {'print $2'} | xargs sudo kill

And to my surprise, this microphone issue started from non-M-series macbooks 6 years back, you can find countless posts on it on apple forums and they haven't fixed it yet.

-Safari doesn't play any videos most of the time, YouTube videos just don't play. On chrome , everything works normal.

-Swiping between desktops feels sluggish.

-Opening a new window of app on desktop 1,opens it randomly on desktop 3 or some random desktop.

-Chrome scrolling feels heavy like it's not using GPU.

-Command+s stopped working randomly while all other shortcuts work. I can't save files because cmd+s is not working. I have to go to the file menu and click save. It's just not working anywhere.

-Most of these issues go away when I restart the machine but they again comes back after sometime.

-Apple support is worst, they have a scripted response for every issue. For example, for the microphone issue, they wanted me to reboot the machine, then reboot in safe boot mode and test mic and finally just reinstall the OS. And they do that for every issue I throw at them. They have no idea how to fix stuff.

I sometimes wonder why can't apple fix these issues? They are making me frustrated. Do you also face similar issues?
Any solution to these issues?

Worth getting m3 or waiting for m4?

Looking to get a new laptop soon and after using a MacBook Pro for a period of time and loving it, I am settled on getting a nicely speced one. The question is, is it worth waiting for the m4 max or biting the bullet now and getting an m3 max?

My main use case is going to be some 3d rendering, web browsing, and software development with emulation

Macbook pro M2 monitor compatibility

Can I connect my 2022 macbook pro M2 to a 540Hz monitor and get desired results? I saw online that only macbooks with M2 max and M3 max chips support 540Hz. I am ready to build a desk setup for my macbook pro M2 and would love some additional suggestions as well. Thank you!

One thing that makes me freak out about my MacBook is that it's slowing down massively when it's on an external screen

I am working at least 75% just on my MacBook Air M2. I had the same situation with my MacBook Pro 2019, which I sold for that exact reason.

When it's on my 27 inch screen it becomes so slow.

I can't figure it out for at least 2 years. I tried many things of course but nothing helped.

Different cabel, with/without charging, with/without USB dock, left/right USB on the MacBook Pro, watching the activity log .. I am sure I tried many other things over the course of 2 years.

I can't even tell if it's instantly getting slower or over time. You'll notice it in normal navigation, opening app, working in the Finder ... it's really difficult to tell exactly, only that nothing feels snappy at all

So most of the time I am not working from my desk just because of that

I did not replace the monitor yet, but I do have an old monitor as well and I noticed the same there - I feel it's a bit less intense there, so maybe monitor screen size matters (my old monitor is 24 inch)

Hard choice between M3 Air and M3 Pro/Pro

Hey all, I'm looking for a new MacBook for work.

I'm extremely torn between the following configurations:

Air 13" - M3 (8, 10, 16), 24 GB RAM, 1 TB HD - $1,900

Pro 14" - M3 Pro (12, 18, 16), 36 GB RAM, 1 TB HD - $2,800

Work will consist of running multiple VMs through Parallels (Win11 & Ubuntu), light video and photo editing (likely AI driven) as well as presentations (PowerPoint).

Folks at work are saying the Air configuration will be more than enough to handle the tasks. I'm not super concerned on price (I'd pay with Apple card interest free payments over 12 months) but I don't want to waste money. I like the Pro for the slightly larger screen and extra USB-C/HDMI ports.

Battery life is also a slight concern but I haven't seen much talk about the M3 Pro so I don't really know what to expect...

Thoughts?

MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020) Polarized Screen Peeling Off

My friend saw a bubbly thing on her screen corner and tried to remove it, only to end up peeling off a layer that looked like a screen protector with a blank white screen underneath. she only peed one corner of the screen though, and when she put the layer back, everything is back to normal but there are some bubble left underneath (just like when you peel off only a portion of screen protector and then put it back).

I looked it up and it looks like many other people have had the same thing happening to them. Wondering if this was ever on the recall list for apple, and if there is anything she could do to not go through the $700 screen replacement option.

Can I ask apple to change it for free? it just doesn't make any sense to be able to peel the screen off this easily!!!
