Macbook sufficient for online TTRPG? (Google Meets, Roll20, Discord, Dropbox + Heavy PDF use at the same time) Or, WINDOWS lol

Hi r/macbook!

I've got a budget of $2000 and am trying to decide on the following 3 computers, based on my local MicroCenter prices (inclusive of my local tax). My most intensive task is running a TTRPG online, which involves at least 4 - 5 separate programs all at the same time.

My requirements are:

  • Minimum 16GB of RAM to to run the following programs all at the same time: Google Meets (2GB of RAM), Roll20 (potentially 6GB RAM, depending on size of map and other graphics), Discord (1GB of RAM maybe), Dropbox and a PDF reader for large sourcebooks (hundreds of pages with tons of graphics - 3 - 5 GB?), and Photoshop for last minute tweaks (really rare honestly).
  • Having a large screen: I use the laptop in combination with my ultrawide monitor, and want to put the Google Meets on the laptop screen so that I can use the monitor for all of my programs.

The two laptops I'm considering are:

  • Certified Refurbished Apple M2 Pro 12-Core Chip; 16GB Unified Memory; 512GB Solid State Drive; 19-Core GPU ($1965.18)
  • Apple MacBook Air 15" Z1BV0006P (early 2024) Apple M3 8-Core CPU; 16GB Unified Memory; 1TB Solid State Drive; 10-Core GPU/16-Core Neural Engine 15.3" Laptop Computer - Midnight ($1,861.84)

Option C, the Windows route:

  • Put my existing components in a mini-ITX case (32GB, Ryzen 7 5800X3D, 1TB NVME, 8 TB HDD) with a new motherboard ($159.99), new power supply ($159.99), new cooler ($129.99) get an external monitor + monitor arm (27 in, ballparking $300 here), and a new Windows license ($15 - 20 on the 3rd party market). Total w/tax: $836.62. I recently purchased the 5800X3D ($289.00) and 8 TB HDD ($129.99), so the total is technically $1292. I'd save money by keeping my memory (32GB), 1 TB HDD, & existing graphics card, a 980 Ti with 6GB VRAM XD. Will probably need to upgrade it in the next 1 - 2 years, but so far it's still working for me (honestly only play Slay the Spire lol). With the money I saved by not buying Mac, I could even upgrade my graphics card (4060 at $300).

If this were purely about price, I'd go the Windows route. BUT:

  • The Mac brings convenience, a likely superior display, less space on my desktop (I can use my existing laptop VESA arm that I use for my work laptop), the option to walk it around my house, and less time spent actually building the dang thing. (Not my first rodeo tho)
  • The Windows PC brings long term upgradability. If any one of the components fails, I can replace it. RAM and CPU are probably the most important for me, and you just can't get 32GB of RAM from Apple without dropping extreme moolah. But it's going to take up SOME space on my desk...but now that I think about it, I could get one of those under desk PC holders. Hmmm.)

Ahhh what do you think?? I am wondering if I just need a few days to sort it out, but I've got to go back to Microcenter in the next few days to make a return window for some other parts.

Thanks for reading!

Battery Problem on MacBook Pro M3 pro

hello everyone, a couple of months ago I bought a 14” MacBook Pro m3 pro and I noticed twice that when the battery reached around 20% the computer would shut down reporting the battery charge completely finished.

In the pictures you can see how the battery charge goes from around 25% to 0% in practically no time.

The battery health is at 100%.

I use “ Al Dente” to control the maximum charge to give the battery but it often fails, charging over the limit (usually set at 85%).

Can this be the fault of Al Dente?

I am waiting for answers thanks guys.

Disappointing audio ? MBP 16 M2Pro

Hi, I've just got a MBP 2016 M2 Pro.

The audio is pretty good but I've noticed at high volumes there is some distortion. For example, the speakers were near max volume (80%) and my sister FaceTimed me. I could hear a distortion/rattle from each speaker when she phoned. Is this just normal? I'd expected some insane level audio but it seems to have some pros/cons.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaZE_K-6ank

This video can cause the issue. It's at the end of the tone.

Macbook Air M2 Specs for an R Coding University Course

Going to grad school this fall and wanted to upgrade my 2019 Macbook Air to the Macbook Air M2. Looking for advice on what memory & storage specs I should be getting if I'm expected to take an introductory R coding course.

For context, I had to download Bootcamp in my undergrad to run a Windows version of Excel and that permanently killed the speed of my Macbook (2019 MBA with 8GB RAM & 128GB SSD) and I don't want that to happen again. Also don't want to get a separate PC laptop just for this one course.

Do I sell my old MacBook

Hi everyone,

So would really appreciate some advice on this. I have an old 2017 MacBook Pro with a touch pad. Now it’s pretty beaten up but still operational. I looked into trading it in for my new one but because of the slight damage it was worth £60 trade in.

Now my debate is whether it’s worth trying to sell, I want to build a home server and debating whether it could sell for enough or I just install Linux on it and setup a home server myself. I’ve attached an image which includes all its specs.

As you can see in the image, the bottom of the screen has some damage and the keyboard is quite sticky (had the keyboard fixed once but these butterfly keyboards are awful). If I were to try sell it what do you think the best I could get is (in the uk)

Graphic Designers- M1 Pro or M3 Pro? (Refurbished?) UK

I currently have Inspiron 13 5379 2-in-1 which I brought in 2018.

I'm in desperate need of an upgrade to an Apple MacBook - it works within my ecosystem; I have an iPhone and iPad. I'm a graphic designer using Photoshop, illustrator, InDesign and I dabble in small projects on After Effects and basic blender; am looking for fast performance and ability to have multiple programmes at once.

After a lot of research I am torn between M1 and M3. There doesn't seem to be massive difference but I wanted to ask this community with more insight then me. I'm leaning towards M1 but can't seem to find any in the UK that are not refurbished. I've never brought anything refurbished before so any advice on that would also be great!

(almost) Same specs macbook pro or air

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a new macbook, but debating if I should buy a macbook air or pro.

Macbook pro specs:

  • Apple M3‑chip with 8‑core CPU, 10‑core GPU and 16‑core Neural Engine

  • 16 GB RAM

  • 512GB SSD

Macbook air specs:

  • Apple M3‑chip with 8‑core CPU, 10‑core GPU and 16‑core Neural Engine

  • 16 GB RAM

  • 1 TB SSD

Is there a difference in performance between these two models?

*I would use it for video editing in Premiere Pro

Thanks in advance!

Trading my MacBook Air m2 8gb 256 towards something bigger

I recently (like December) got an m2 MacBook base model because I had a credit with my school and needed a laptop.

However since then I’ve started using Davinci resolve extensively and just overall rendering a lot of 4k timelines with denoise/stabilization software.

The MacBook Air for sure throttles quite quickly.

My thinking, still being a college student without the deepest pockets so far,

I want to sell this MacBook and use that cash to take off a chunk of a used MacBook Pro

*TLDR SECTION

If I sell my MacBook Air m2 8gb, would I be best getting a MacBook Pro m1 with more ram? Or settle on an m2 16gb MacBook Pro?

I don’t need the quickest or the best yet, but I imagine just switching to a pro in general will keep me from throttling so quickly. Any advice is appreciated

Opinions on macbook air M2

I'm looking to upgrade to macOS and I'm coming from Windows. I'm considering the MacBook Air (2022) with the M2 chip. I'd like to know how it performs in terms of speed and battery life. I'm a student currently using a very slow PC.

Also, is 256 GB of storage enough for my needs? My current PC has 256 GB, and I've already used 150 GB. Does the macOS take up a lot of space like Windows does?

changing Mac's aluminum body

We can't deny that even if the new MacBook Pro has the fingerprint coating it doesn't make the laptop itself more durable, quite the opposite in a matter of fact, every scratch I got from the smallest bumps is very visible on the Space Black, reveals the silver layer of the aluminum under its black skin.

My question is , is it possible to fix this once in a while, if I feel like I wanna have this brand new feeling laptop again. it's beautiful and I want it to look perfect. get me or not its fine, does apple or any other fixing services do it ?

How do I do get used to the software?

I’ve always used either my phone or iPad for everything I need to do and sometimes use a windows pc but I’ve never used a MacBook/MAC OS. This Christmas, I’m getting a MBA and I was wondering if it’ll be easy for me to use. I don’t plan to do very demanding tasks at the moment, so I’ll be web browsing, sending a few emails every now and then, light video editing, high school work, etc. I have never used and don’t plan to use any professional software. Today, I went to check the sizes of Mac’s and get used to the software. I found it a little hard, granted I didn’t use it for very long, at max, 10 minutes. That added onto everything I’ve seen on videos, it seems a little hard, for example, how to close apps, how to do full screen, how to turn it off, it just seemed a little hard to use at first sight compared to other devices like iPhone or iPad. It’d be greatly appreciated if someone can help it seem a little less intimidating. Thanks :)

Cant choose a MacBook for web development

Torn between 3 options:

  1. MacBook Air 15 M3 24gb+1tb
  2. MacBook Pro 14 M3 24gb+1tb
  3. MacBook Pro 14 M3 Pro 12/18 36gb+1tb

MBA is almost the same price as M3 MBP while MBP also has active cooling and promotion so I am less leaning towards it. I would get the M3 MacBook Pro as it comes in great pricing and have active cooling which is important for a chip like M3 but what is concerning is that it has 24GB of Unified Memory, unlike 36GB in the MBP with M3 Pro but it also comes with a very serious price difference. I do not wanna pay for the M3 Pro unless I really really need it so... what do you think?

Edit: I usually run Google Chrome (like 10 tabs), VSCode, Figma, Whatsapp, Discord and maybe Word at the same time. My current MacBook is MacBook Pro 13 i5 1038NG7, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD 4 thunderbolt 3 ports 2020 and when I open all those it takes like 13 gigs so I am pretty negative towards buying a 16gb machine again. 16 is kinda the new 8.

Edit 2: For the reference, here are another 2 models to consider:

  1. MacBook Air 13 M3 24gb+1tb

  2. MacBook Pro 14 M3 Pro (the binned 11 core one), 36gb+1tb

4 Hours Remaining Time on Battery after %100 Charge

https://preview.redd.it/e0bcfavb144d1.jpg?width=2940&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cec26a06271299225abf222d67b1c5334867f6bf

this is what it shows up. 4 hours on battery is definitely not enough for me. Is this normal for a MBA M2 a2681 ? Should I have my battery replaced ?

Thoughts on using a mac m4 max for running local LLM perpetually?

Hi everyone! I'm thinking of potentially upgrading to a macbook m4 max when it releases with possible maxed out RAM, but I can't seem to justify that price tag but I am keen on using a local LLM on my machine.

My main issues are:

  1. It might kill the battery after 6 months. I used Baldurs Gate on my macbook air m2 and it went from 100% to 94% after playing that game for a month straight. Since I'm unfamiliar with changing batteries or components on a mac I don't know if it's worth it?

  2. I know getting a mac studio is much more bang for my buck but I can't really lug around a monitor and a mac studio

I'm mostly keen to learn from people who has done this themselves, and what their experience is?

Thanks in advance my friends

Macbook Pro 2017 'Dies' at around 50-90%, then when plugged in displays the where battery was left off

macbook pro 2017 dies at around 50-90%, then needs practially an jump start to get the macbook to turn on again. when I plug in the laptop the perctange will display where left off. MacBook can run somtimes when unplugged after jump start

for exmaple today my macbook 'died' at 91% and displayed the dead battery symbol, when trying to power on. then plugged in MacBook into powersoruce, and the MacBook will turn back on and still be at 91%

this will happen when the battery is running around 50-90%.

happened like 20 times in the past two weeks. only once in the twenty it displayed an error message, and this one time, instead of macbook displaying an dead battery symbol, it showed an blue screen. Had the blue screen for around 10 minutes, until the macbook self rebooted and displayed the message of MacBook restated due to an problem.

the battery got replaced just under 2 years ago. Logic board replaced twice, 5 months ago. Screen Replaced just under 2 years as well

All still under warranty due to Australias 2 year Warranty Period

I did some trouble shooting by re setting the SMC, and the battery conditon displays as "normal"

What do you guys think the problem is? How can I/Apple fix?

Does it make sense to buy 24GB Unified Memory (maxed-out upgrade) on M3 Macbook Air with 256GB SSD?

Background:

I currently have an Intel Macbook Pro (2015) which is now on its deathbed. It has a 16GB RAM+512GB SSD.

Even with 16G RAM, I would occasionally run into an "Out of Application Memory" error. Sometimes the applications would stop responding. Other times the Chrome/Safari browser tabs would be too slow to load or just laggy. Not sure if this matters but my SSD still has 30GB of free space after using my MBP for 10 years.

Seeing all this, I am planning to buy an M3 Macbook Air. It seems like I would need more RAM for my daily needs. But SSD does not seem as important (since I wasn't able to fill up a 512GB SSD in the last 10 years).

Question:

Does buying a 24GB Unified Memory+256GB SSD configuration make sense given the background I described above? Basically, the SSD is standard selection available(256GB) but the RAM is maxed out to 24GB.

Are there any disadvantages to buying a Macbook Air with a maxed-out RAM upgrade but base options for SSD and CPU that Apple provides?

External monitor for a MacBook air

I'm looking to replace my 2013 MacBook Air (which is still functional) with the 2024 version. I'm looking for an external monitor that can do this (is it possible)?

  1. single cable to the Mac.
  2. External HDD connected to the monitor that will work with the Mac (plex streaming to Apple TV.
  3. Not take up much desk space so I have space for hobbies and can just have the monitor run shows in the background.

I was looking at the LG 27880UN-B? Would that work?

I've got a fairly decent budget for the MacBook and the monitor, but would rather not spend more than I need. my phone works great for most things I need it for.
