I have quite a few questions, I'm sorry!
I have a super old mac mini and I breathed new life into it by getting an external SSD, formatting it, and using that to boot from.
I did this YEARS ago (maybe 5-6 years ago at this point?), and honestly I couldn't recall the steps I took if I tried!
It is running os10 now, and many things are no longer working. I can't upgrade to os14 though, because I am pretty sure the SSD is formatted as a MacOS Extended, Journaled, rather than AFPS (is that right?)
Can I do anything here?
Are my options to buy a new SSD, format it with AFPS, and then move everything over (and use my current 2TB just as a backup disk)?
Or should I buy a new computer?
I had an account on my macbook which had the cursed onedrive installed. I removed that account from my macbook and saw that it left the actual user folder so I simply moved the entire user folder in the bin. Well, now when I try to erase it it keeps saying the folder/file/icon is in use and noticed onedrive being mentioned a lot. I looked around and nothing is working.
I attempted to erase the entire bin via terminal, attempted to change the read/write permissions of the folder and it's subfolder to read/write for everyone, made sure it's not locked, I tried booting into safe mode and erasing it. nothing nada 0%. What in the ever living hell. The worst part is, if I now try to move the entire folder out of the bin, it just creates a copy. Now whenever I move things in the bin and try to erase the bin I always have to click "continue" and "skip" like 20 times because some folder/file/icon is apparently in user somewhere. And yes, I uninstalled onedrive.
When I typed a URL into the Safari search bar and hit return, on many websites (e.g. Wikipedia) the cursor used to move to the first text entry field, but now in 18.0.1 the focus moves to the sidebar icon, which is not only unhelpful but totally bizarre. What's going on here? Was it a Safari update that changed it? A System Setting? An extension (I don't remember installing any new ones lately). Something I did?
Any idea how I can get it back? It's driving me nuts! -thanks!
MacBook Pro 13-inch (M1, 2020)
Sonoma 14.7
Safari 18.0.1
Using Migration Assistant over Thunderbolt. New computer says it's done. Old computer says there's a way to go (and is frozen). Who do I believe?
I terminated the process, and new computer seems happy, but....
I am trying to create a 2 page pdf by scanning in 2 papers using my Brother brand printer/scanner and the Preview program. I am at work, and do not have the model number. The printer is connected by airprint. I am running on a Mac Mini M1 with Mac OS 15.1.
The first page will scan without any issues. The second page scanned will be blurry with a lot of background noise around the text.
Is there a setting i'm missing, or has anybody else had this issue?
Both pages will scan fine, when scanned while running Linux. I am trying to use only the Apple ecosystem, and this is the one thing holding me back.
I’m stuck, I don’t have any usb-c to lightning adaptor or usb-c to usb-a cable around and I disable bleutooth ob my iMac m1 a while ago.
I cannot connect to my Logitech mx keyboard or even my Apple wireless keyboard probably cause Bluetooth is turned off.
Tried to reboot in recovery nothing work. Again I don’t have any cable to physically connect. Any help please ?!?
Hi all
Finally, I ordered my first apple product ever.
Mac Mini M4 is out, and I ordered one, and should get it in the next days.
I am coming from Windows, with decades of experience there,
and would like to ask:
Are there things that are recommended to do first thing on a MacOS computer?
I will give some examples:
On a Windows computer, I always divide the SSD to 3 partitions:
Can a MacOS computer be partitioned too?
Is MacOS OK with that?
I really prefer that over a single partition filling the whole SSD..
Similarly, any other things like that that should be done on the first days of the computer, and you recommend,
please write..
Thank you
Hey Reddit,
I’m considering buying a Logitech G29 to use with games like Farming Simulator 25, SnowRunner, Euro Truck Simulator, etc. Does anyone have experience using the G29 on macOS Sonoma, specifically on a MacBook Air M1?
I’ve read mixed things online—some people say it works fine, others have issues. If anyone has any insights or advice, I’d really appreciate it! Thanks in advance for the help!
My MacBook disk is basically full. I'm in safe mode deleting as much as I can as finder wouldn't even run in normal mode. I've noted the Application Support folder is 5GB plus. The Adobe folder is 2.7gb alone (I used to run CC back before it was cloud based and since on the cloud). Since I no have trashed the adobe applications can I just delete the entire adobe app support folder? What can I safely delete in here? Would my projects be in here (I assume not?) thanks!
I'm presuming since the lightning port on my old SE2020 can be used with a headphone jack adapter as both audio in and out (eg headphones with a mic for calls, music, voice memos etc.) that it's also possible to send the audio from my MBP 2020 to my iPhone. I'd like to do this for live streaming if possible, but it would also make video recording a LOT simpler since I wouldn’t have to record separate audio and align in an editor. There is a "camera connection" dongle which has the ability to play host to a second DAC while charging, but at more than $50, I'd like to at least try what seems on the surface an intuitive solution. The last thing I want is MORE cables. Thanks folks.
tl;dr
What the heck is file type " 8" and how do I get rid of it?
Saga begins here:
I installed MacDroid, stopped it, then dragged it to the trashcan, and emptied the trashcan. I suspected there were more files as when I tried reinstalling it, the installation was abbreviated and I wasn't prompted for specific options.
I used the terminal command ls -R | grep macdroid -i
to find all the Library files that contained MacDroid, and there were quite a few. After removing most of them, there was one instance left: us.electronic.mas.macdroid.sfl3
I used another terminal command ls -Rasl | grep us.electronic.mas.macdroid.sfl3
and the following was returned: 8 -rw-r--r-- 1 _clap_ staff 797 Nov 9 20:14 us.electronic.mas.macdroid.sfl3
I tried removing it, but was thrown an error of "file or directory does not exist".
[QUESTION1] what is the8
filetype? I've never seen that value before, only an indication of FILE or DIRECTORY.
[QUESTION2] where is this file or how do I get rid of this last trace of MacDroid?
I edited Photos with the clean up function in the photos app, but it does not sync to iCloud. When I try to share picture it get stuck on downloading...
Seems like the photos I edit stops syncing for some reason as soon as I save it.
Anyone having the same problem?
I accidentally deleted an app from launchpad (alt and then click on the x), but it was not the app I meant to delete, therefore I reinstalled if from the AppStore but it was blank, all the data was lost... Therefore I found out the data was stored in "Containers" in the fusers library folder, there was the data and projects I was doing... Is there a way or an app to recover data from there? I downloaded Disk Drill but such directories are not showing, thanks in advance!
TL/DR: Hyperlinks in documents don't always "work" even if they look active. And worse, if a document contains multiple hyperlinks, after clicking a few the rest stop working.
I have a workflow where I assemble a large number of hyperlinks into a text document, one link per line. When I create the document I use edit-->substitutions-->show substitutions-->smart links checked-->replace all. This "activates" the links so that their color changes and they become clickable. Normal behavior should then be: click on the link, the cursor turns into a hand icon with a pointing finger, and a browser page opens up. However, in a text document, often the cursor will turn into the hand icon but when clicked, nothing happens. I find it works better if I copy the text document into a Notes document and double space it. Still, after clicking about 5 links in a row, it stops working. I can "refresh" by clicking on a blank space in the document, or by quitting the Notes app and reopening it. This appears to be a weird bug, that link behavior becomes "exhausted" after too many are clicked sequentially from one document. It is very annoying. Has anyone else experienced this and/or does anyone know how to make hyperlinks in text documents work more reliably?
I like to keep the app along the edge of the screen but regardless if it is on the left or right, when I initially open it, it moves about half the width of the app back towards the center of the screen. Anyone else have a similar issue?
Is there a way built into macOS or some sort of 3rd party software I can use to go to an app that’s already open in full screen? Like I can do Ctrl+3 to quickly go to desktop 3, I’d like to be able to have an application open in full screen and be able to define a shortcut to go straight to that application in full screen
I bought the base variant of the new mac mini and it's great. however, I want to share the power of this machine to my friend who sits in another room (same network) and he would like to learn video editing and learn logic pro, this is not possible with his dusty old laptop. we both want to use the system at the same time while i do casual browsing stuff. what's the best way to implement this? does mac allow two users to operate at the same time?
For example, I find cloud storage apps like OneDrive and Google Drive to slow down my Mac, and I've recently learned that CloudMounter is a great alternative.
I will soon be setting up a new Mac Mini and would like to improve my app selection.
since the new macos update introduced the new screen mirroring setup thing my tv cuts off after a second of being plugged in to my mac and says "no signal". yet my mac shows it's currently extending to my tv. is anyone else experiencing this issue? is there anything i can do?
So, two weeks before the election, a photo of a clean cut, earnest-looking, middle-aged guy with the US flag in the background, appears in our shared photos library. He looks right out of central casting if you typed in the prompt "sympathetic Trump voter who looks kind of like you". We are voters in a swing state. Then, two days before the election, another photo of him appears, looking even more kind and earnest, with the flag again a bit farther in the background, like it's his garage or workshop and happens to have a US flag there. I had figured it was something my wife had downloaded, and she assumed I had, but none of us put it there. Were we hacked before the election to try to influence our thinking? Very weird.
I have a really old Windows machine that I use occasionally for software-specific tasks. I'm thinking of binning it using the Key I used when installing it originally and using it for registering a VM version on my M1 MBP. Does anyone who uses Windows on a VM know if:
This will work, or will it be rejected due to wrong hardware etc
IF it works, will the VM version then be upgradable to Win 11 from within the VM?
As you might've guessed, I've never used VM software...lol.
Thanks for any advice...
Every time I disconnect from an external monitor, the Apple Menu at the top of the screen disappears. I can still use all my windows and apps but I can't see the Apple menu. When I go to the desktop, there's just a transparent grey bar at the top, and when I click the desktop, I get a slightly darker grey border around the whole screen.
I'm certain this is a feature that does something and I've tried pressing esc but still nothing works to get rid of it. I've tried Googling the issue but I don't know what the right phrases are to google.
Can someone help please?
Thank you in advance!
I set a custom shortcut for Siri as CMD+Space (as it was before 15.,1), but now it overrides Spotlight.
I want a quick tap for Spotlight and hold for Siri BOTH with Cmd+Space, as it functioned in previous OS.
How can I go back to this setup?
I updated using the OpenCore Patcher app via a bootable drive. I’ve tried factory resetting and that won’t work, I unfortunately did not have Time Machine set up, and I get an error when trying to downgrade back to Monterey using OpenCore Patcher saying I cannot downgrade to earlier OS’s.
Any advice?
I have MacBook 2016 Pro with TouchBar and I'm complaining about should I download Ventura on open core or stay to Monterey? What do you think and why?
i believe it may have updated overnight a few nights ago, but i am no longer able to log in to my server/desktop. whenever i type in my password it shuts down (this has happened over and over and over again- i wish i was exaggerating). i can however log in to the guest account with no problems.
any step-by-step suggestions?
