And by Christmas Orphans, I definitely do not mean "Please sir, Can I have some more" kid orphans, I mean grown ups with not enough family in town, who would like to go out and be social. And let me be clear, if you want to bring your locally adopted family to this event, or friends, or kids, or whomever, this is the event for you and them. There is always room for more people, and more delicious food on the table. (Well, hopefully everyone is vaccinated.)
Thats the Who and the What, now for the When and Where
The when is on Christmas Day Dec 25th. We will open the doors at 3:00PM, and start to dive into the yummy things that people have brought at about 4:00PM. With events at my house, we typically go until people leave as conversations are awesome (often as late as 11:00pm).
The where is that I'm at "The Dragon House" 5284 44th Ave SW (on the corner of 44th and Brandon in West Seattle). You can tell when you get here because of the large life sized sculptures in the yard, and down on the planting strip in front is a lifesized sculpture of a naked woman that had the dragon on a leash (she is missing her pet dragon that became only a stump due to a car hitting him). They are carved from trees that grew in those spots. Once you get here there is a set of curved grand entry stairs that are red concrete just to the North of the girl. Come on up, come past the trampoline and up onto the front porch. If you have trouble finding the place, please feel free to call (206) 932-6622 - by voice, it's a landline in the house, and we can tell you how to get here. As a side note, if you have questions ahead of time, you can also feel free to call. Street parking is usually very easy to find close by.
Important Extra notes:
As far as the food: I'll provide a brown sugar coated baked ham. Since this is a civilized event, I'll provide real plates and silverware, the catch here is that you have to do your own dishes. There will be signs up and lots of people can help show you to the kitchen. It's not really a steep price to pay for a wonderful evening. As far as what you bring, this is christmas dinner, this is the time of year you want to bring something amazing. Bring something you feel proud of sharing. Please DO NOT stop at a convenience store on the way here and grab a bag of chips or a bag of hot dogs... This sentiment is not about spending a lot of money or putting in hours and hours of time, it's about taking pride in what you are sharing with the community of people you will be having dinner with. I've got a couple ovens to heat things in, I've got power to make sure a crock pot stays hot, I've got serving utensils. Traditionally the quality of food that people bring to events here is very good, thats one of the reasons I keep having events here!
I'll have the fire lit inside, and there will be great conversations to be had.
This is a no smoking house, and a no animals house. While there are 2 sets of stairs in the front, we have a more level area in back with only one set of stairs, and if you need help getting up them, call and let me know, the guests are always willing to help someone else in.
As usual, I'll try take some time to give tours of some of the more entertaining features of the house, so if you've "always wondered", well this is a great time to find out. In fact, if you are a budding storyteller and want to give some of the tours, reach out to me as a former housemate who loved giving tours probably won't be here this year.
It's been crowded at this event in the past, but this year, I have an empty room on the main floor that we will use as "The Dessert room", and we will use the upstairs kitchen as "the bar".
YES! Bring your kids! (As well as friends) I will have "The ultimate wood block set" next to the christmas tree, and if you've never seen it, you will be amazed. Heck, most adults are amazed by it. What you should NOT bring is paper plates or utensils or firewood.
There is a climbing wall in the house. And the chimney is set up as a climbing Chimney... If anyone wants to come be the belay climbing instructor, let me know, it's always good fun for people that have never tried.
With that, I look forward to seeing everyone on Christmas day.
I am moving out of a high-rise apartment in the SLU/Belltown area. My lease ends in the middle of December, but the apartment management is requiring me to pay the full month's rent for December. They said they will send a refund check for the prorated rent (full month rent - prorated rent) within 20 days after I move out. Is this normal here? Is it worth arguing with management to pay only the prorated amount upfront instead of waiting for a refund later?
On the reddit post I have seen people complain how they can't even get a retail job in the seattle area as its that competitive.
Is this true??
Would you eat this meal? Do you hate it?
You would think with the high homeless population and smash and grabs in seattle city limits that many people wouldn't want to live in seattle anymore.
Why aren't people fleeing seattle in droves??
If people would leave seattle housing and apartment rental prices would drop.
Hello, I am looking to move to Seattle in the future and I am wondering where I could go to take small metals jewelry classes in Seattle? Any bead stores or anything jewelry related would also be great to know about. Thank you! -Ash
Guess the bar
Sorry for shaky camera, was trying to be discreet with filming, just in case things escalated
For context, my husband is a loveable, trusting, playful golden retriever husband. He befriends everyone, often thinks the best of people, and loves helping. I love that about him, but I also worry for him. Me? I'm introverted, tend towards pessimistic, distrustful and nihilistic. Where as my husband thinks people are generally good, I think people are, at best, selfish and self serving. But my husband is good deal older and wiser than I, so I give him that. We went to the Safeway gas station in Ballard on NW Market and 15th Ave NW. Guy claiming to be from Texas says he just needs some fuel, he "don't want handouts", and in turn will wash our windows. I'm not sure if my husband saw my "f*CK no" face or ignores it, but he agrees. I make my concern apparent, but my husband assures me he won't get bullied. Gas asking guy see my distrust and goes on about how he doesn't get why people "in the Northwest" are so distrustful. I tell him it's nothing personal, just a big city thing. He tries to bully my husband into letting him hold the nozzle, but my husband is smart enough to insist on holding the nozzle, fills him up with $5 gas, and makes sure to end the transaction. My husband points out that he took appropriate precautions, but I say why even risk it? The guy was sus and bullying. My husband insists on "being a decent person". I say being decent doesn't mean giving handouts. What do you all think?
Any other GenX Washingtonians going to see Cyndi tonight on her farewell tour? (Lots of folks have had multiple farewells…I think Cyndi means it! 😁🤪
For over a decade I’ve lived on the west side of Capitol Hill, below 15th. It’s diverse, a lot of renters mixed with homeowners, a mix of socioeconomic background, etc. People are friendly and open. It’s been great!
I always dreamed of someday owning a house on the northeast side of Capitol Hill. The trees are gorgeous, it’s peaceful but within walking distance of the rest of the hill, and the houses are so pretty. There’s a .01% chance I could ever afford a house there, but it was fun to dream. That all changed recently.
For about the past few years I’ve been involved in activities that involve people from the other side of Capitol Hill, east and north of 15th Ave. With the except of two really awesome people, these experiences have not been pleasant. They’re money obsessed, status obsessed, and very insecure about both. All they want to do is show off their wealth and vacations and one up each other. They’re weirdly competitive about it. They don’t seem to take pleasure in any of it, just dryly going through the motions of “being a rich person”.
Hanging out with them makes me feel bad about myself. My clothes, my kids clothes, the education I can’t afford to give them, my lack of rich people hobbies and vacations, my lack of connections, of Ivy League education, lack of luxury cars. Am I wrong? Am I just judging them too harshly? Honestly for the most part they seem offended by my middle class presence.

So I saw this in the news, an older Asian driver crashing into an Asian restaurant:
As I was reading this, I felt a sense of deja vu, like I read this exact story before.
So I googled "Asian restaurant crash bellevue", and there was almost an identical story, exactly a year ago:
Does anyone know if something is going on here? WIth Bellevue, Asian drivers, and Asian restaurants?
Just moved here from Portland, what a beautiful city!
