Ravenna: Friend was run over by a truck yesterday - looking for witnesses and next steps

My friend was commuting on his scooter Weds, 10/30, and was in a serious accident involving a truck.

He is in serious but stable condition. His recovery will be long and arduous. The first thing he said to me when I saw him was hilarious so I know his noggin is ok.

Looking for witnesses The accident happened in the Ravenna area at 65th St and 26th Ave NE around 12:05 PM.

A truck (need more details) turned right without a blinker. Unfortunately, my buddy slid under the truck and became intimately familiar with its back tires.

We are looking for witnesses to the accident. It occurred yesterday, Wednesday, October 30. He was wearing an orange rain jacket and silver helmet.

If you know someone who has surveillance or a ring camera in the area, please let me know.

SPD was very helpful when I called the non-emergency line. I have an incident number and am waiting for an officer from the North Precinct to call me back.

Getting a full report-asking for tips The fire department tracked me down and told me the driver split- it was a hit and run.

When I got to the hospital, my friend was coherent and said he spoke with the driver. Wasn’t able to get any additional details from him (pain meds had him seeing elephants at this point). I am going to assist him by working with the FD and SPD on getting more info about the accident on the record. Please let me know if you have any advice on how I can best work with these two agencies to get a record of what happened and ideally the identity of the driver.

Any other tips on supporting my friend are welcome. What does someone staying in the hospital for a while need? A long phone charger, blanket? Can’t bring food for now (special diet).

Another new adult rider, looking for a Dutch or Dutch-style bike

(I just returned from visiting/riding with family in the Netherlands.) I understand that G&O Family Cyclery used to carry this kind of bicycle, but they are permanently closed. Any other local resources (I especially want to learn about sizing; I'll likely buy from a private party)? Thanks so much!

Stolen Tern Quick Haul

My wife had her Tern Quick Haul stolen from First Hill at James & Terry Ave last night.

If you see a Tern Quick Haul Merlot (possibly with a New York Fahgettaboutit lock), please let me know.

On a separate, but related topic. What steps do you take to keep your bike safe?

The thief took apart the bike rack and walked off with the bike. I'm a little confused about how they achieved this, since at least one of the wheels was locked to the frame.

Where do you bike?

I'm struggling to find good places to bike. Sammamish river trail/Burke Gilman would be good, but they're filled with people walking 3 dogs at a time and kids zigzagging. Preferably mostly flat, but anything under 5% is fine. I'm in the Redmond area, so anywhere less than 30 minutes from there.

Great to meet a lot of you in person today. Quarterly meet up?

Appreciated so many of you coming down to Little Saigon today for the Bicycle Farmer’s Market and to have a chat.

Met the guy who got the gun pulled on him, the person who needed a 27” tire and a bunch more who said “I saw this on Reddit!”

Wondering if there’s any interest, especially as the big dark comes, to have a quarterly check in? It felt real good to share war stories, bike tips and to put faces to bikes. I’d be honored to host, maybe we do a pot luck? Invite a speaker? If you’re interested or have any ideas, let me know. Happy to be able to recognize a bunch more of you on the street!

E-bike Recommendations

Hi everyone,

The light rail has been my main form of commute to work, but now I want to incorporate an e-bike for fun and overall commute time. The cold and rain season are upon us, so I need a bike that can withstand the tough weather conditions and manage hills. I’ve read these type of bikes should have IPX6 rated batteries for these conditions. My budget is between $600-$900. Any recommendations and/or pieces of advice would be much appreciated. TYIA!

What ebike can survive Seattle hills?

I am a heavy guy and I have a long enough commute that I’m not going to be up for bike commuting without an ebike.

However, I keep breaking stuff! Broken spokes are expected but I keep burning out ebike parts!

I do live on one of our many steep hills and it’s unfortunately an unavoidable part of my commute.

Have any of you heavier riders had success with an ebike in Seattle for a few thousand miles? I find nothing seems to last more than 700 miles without major repairs.

If so what are you riding? Thanks!

Mystery Bike ID. PNW Builder

This bike has been a bit of a mystery at my LBS and hoping you guys can help ID it.

It's a lugged steel frame. A longtime patron of the shop donated it about 2 years ago and the shop techs remember is him saying something about it being a custom frame from somewhere up in the PNW. Possible that the decals might be the name of the customer rather than the name of the builder.

Does anyone recognize the decal?

Bike sale/swap this weekend?

There's a used bike sale or bike swap this weekend and I can't remember where. I put a notification in my phone, but all it said was "bike sale".

Hit by car while riding bike - what to do?

Hi All,
I was hit by a car while I was riding my bike last Thursday (10/17). I was crossing 4th Ave S westbound on South Jackson St (approximately here) at around 1130am when a Uhaul van made a left turn in front of me and I didn't have time to stop and hit it. It was also pouring with rain, which impacted how effective my brakes were. I was knocked off my bike and a little delirious but I did see the van stop briefly and then drive off north on 4th. I was meeting a friend for lunch and it was pouring with rain so I walked my bike over to the restaurant around the corner and did not look for witnesses or help. I may have also had a concussion.

Does anyone know what I could do to find the driver of the van so they can be appropriately punished for a hit and run? So far I have:

  • Filed a police report over the phone with an extremely disinterested SPD officer
  • Files a traffic collision report with Washington State Patrol (I have no idea if this was necessary or not - I did this before the police report)
  • Asked the nice fellow at Seattle Traffic Cams on youtube if he got the incident on camera. Unfortunately he didn't but he did get a clip of the van on a nearby camera shortly afterwards heading north on 4th. The resolution is too low to make out plates as far as I can tell. (Also, side note - it is crazy that the traffic cameras aren't recorded by the city, even temporarily).

(originally posted on r/seattle but I think it got lost in the new post tide - couldn't figure out how to cross post it)

Thanks all.

Bike ride today (Oct 24)

I saw a group of people gather at Fremont Ave N and N110 street. Looked like they were starting or ending their ride there. Made me miss group rides. Would you all let me crash your ride next time ?

Small incident - asking your opinion

I was riding east on Mercer street in lower queen anne this morning. I joined the flow of traffic at a break, and then the car behind me started to trail closely behind me. I sped up and planned to make it through the next light, but I didn’t make it. The car honked at me, and when I stopped at the light, I looked back and we exchanged exasperated expressions. I felt so frustrated I just kept riding. Should i have moved over to let them pass through the light? Am I in the wrong here, and if so, how can I improve my manners/diplomacy? Thanks for your perspective!

Weekend cycle clubs/group rides?

I was walking around the Washington Arboretum today around ~11:30am-ish and saw a huge group of cyclists ride by, it made me really miss my old cycling group. I tried checking out Cascade but most of their group rides are on weekdays. Are there any other groups/clubs in the area for group rides, preferably on weekends? Thanks!

Stolen Bik

My salsa journeyman was stolen outside a UW building on Roosevelt Way last Thursday. I am new to Seattle and sadly had not gotten my wits about me bike safety-wise. It did not have the frame bag or rack on it at the time. Hoping to see this beloved bike again one day!!

Pump Tracks

Are there any in Seattle proper? There are the dirt jumps at Lower Woodland, but those aren't really pumpable. Is there anything else that doesn't require going out to Dufy or something?

Do you need a completely waterproof bag?

I'm looking for a bag for my bike for grocery shopping and carrying random items around. Do I need a completely waterproof bag, or is water resistance good enough?

I really like the Arkel Shopper, but the top isn't waterproof. Are there any similar bags that have flat bottoms and ideally a zipper close?

Cheap bike for locking up at light rail

I live about two miles from light rail and would like a bike to commute to the station, lock up and not worry too much about it if it gets stolen.

I like my other bikes too much to risk leaving them unattended.

I'd like the bike to be in good working order, but given the 'disposable' nature of this bike, any tips on finding the right kind of bike that's cheap to buy, decent enough quality to maintain (no walmart bikes), and boring enough that it's less likely to get stolen from the light rail bike rack?
