Off-road training classes?

Hey folks. I’ll be going to touratech this year and I know they offer classes, but outside of that; where can a relative dirt noob take classes to learn dirt skills? I can only practice with my DR650 own my own so much and if there’s bad habits I have I’d like to have a class teach me. I’m out in the Tacoma wa area, but I’m willing to go an hour or two (or more I suppose) out of the way as needed. Plenty of street time, but decided one day that I was missing half of the enjoyment by never riding dirt as a kid.

Big lots in Seattle to practice in

Any good lots that are usually empty around here? I've been looking a bit but usually they are not that big, or pretty busy, etc. Any suggestions?

I feel a bit silly asking, but would anyone in the pdx area be willing to teach me to ride? im gonna get a yamaha tw200, but would like some riding exp and knowledge before investing in and hoping on my own, or any advice abt local riding classes(??) would be very helpful! (I'd be willing to pay ya if you want obvi, but i heard actual classes can be like $200/each?)

Question about SR 142

Heyo! By any chance is there anyone who lives near or frequently rides/ drives through SR 142 who would be able to give me the weather/ road conditions both currently and what its usual weather pattern is like throughout the year (As in what interval of the year should I expect the road to be safe to ride through, and when I should expect it to essentially be closed or restricted due to weather) I know it can get a decent amount of snow as well however the WSDOT has almost no weather stations, road cameras, or even reports on the road conditions I can gauge off of.

Anyone in eastern WA have track day experience in Spokane? Looking to do a track day there but it looks like they only have one riding group and it depends on if enough people sign up.

WA resident, buying a used bike with Oregan title

Hey, fellow riders! So, last October, I did the endorsement course and just came across the sweetest deal on a used Honda Rebel from Facebook Marketplace. Now, here's the thing: I'm not a native to the States, and I'm a bit clueless about the whole registering process. I haven't paid for my license to show my motorcycle endorsement.
Do I gotta meet the seller at the DOL, and are there any extra charges for an Oregon title transfer?

Timber Road in Western Washington County, Oregon, is still closed

Exactly one year ago yesterday, Washington County Land Use and Transportation in Oregon made the decision to close Timber Road indefinitely due to a slow-moving landslide collapsing the roadway between Glenwood and Timber.

Timber is an incredibly fun road for motorcyclists. But it looks like it's going to be closed through 2024 as well (says it will be opened "by the end of the year", but I'm a pessimist).

Failed WMST Permit test

Failed my WMST Permit test due to a few things, my clutch control isn't the best. I stalled out once, hit one of the cones on the cone weave, hit one of the yellow boxes on the U-turn after making a right turn from a stop. The part that kills me though is ultimately I failed because on the final maneuver I wasn't going fast enough and it is just eating me up inside. I applied and got in to do a warmup retest in a week. What I wanted to ask for is some advice, I am in Washington btw.

Riding gear recommendations for our all year weather

New to motorcycles and few years to PNW region. I am looking to get myself on a motorcycle this summer and want to get safest and comfortable riding gears for our weather. I would be commuting for work and also explore PNW scenic roads and twisties on weekends. And everything would be in daylight since I will be on permit and will focus on improving my skills before thinking of taking any more risks.

Drop in your recommendations and correct me if my recommendations below can be improved.

I am planning on these for summer with unexpected rain preparation.

  1. Shoei / Arai ECE 22.06 helmets - in white or something hi viz
  2. Helite Turtle 2 or HMoov Backpack airbag. Hi Viz if possible. Mechanical trigger.
  3. Riding jackets with CE2 armors for chest, shoulders,.... Any product recommendations for hi viz and safety?
  4. Riding jeans or airbag pants. Need recommendation.
  5. Riding boots. Need recommendation.
  6. Riding gloves. Need recommendation.

You guys can drop your current gear in comments too if you don't have any recommendations in mind.

I am very risk averse hence doubling on safety and preventive riding (took MSF course)

Thank you in advance!

Expired permit

I got my 180 day riding permit and also ran through the 180 day extension without getting my full endorsement. Do the rules for permitting say that I basically can't do anything for 5 years, or do I have to just go through the tests to get another permit?

I'm finally getting my first bike!

Hello!

I don't think this post breaks the rules, but if it does I'll gladly take down. I just want to say hey and that I'm excited to go from lurking to officially being a part of the community.

I'm paying for it today and I'll be picking it up on Saturday. I've been saving for a long time and have spent years looking at tons of bikes, finally settling on a Moto Guzzi V7 Special that was available for the right price at the right place and time.

It's been a loooong time coming now, so I'm genuinely stoked to experience, learn, grow, poke y'alls brains about advice, and get to join these meetups and group rides. I feel like exploring the whole world on this thing... but I'll start with the PNW.

That's all I got! Sorry if I'm being one of those annoying newbies. I'm sure I'll mellow out, but for now I want to keep gushing about this thing.

Obligatory pic 🩶🖤🧡

Registering a bike with different frame and engine VINs

I have an old XS650 I built up a while back. I bought it with no title, but with "abandoned vehicle" paperwork signed by the Washington State Patrol. I used that to get a Vermont registration and plate, with the idea that I would use that to get a Washington title and registration. I recently found that Washington will no longer title a Vermont registered vehicle over 15 years old, you need to go through the whole "ownership in doubt" process. The employee at the licensing office made that process sound terrible, she basically said appointments with WSP were so hard to come by that I would probably need to go to Spokane to get it done. Sounds like a pain in the ass.

My question is, if I bought a donor engine that came with a Washington title that matched the VIN on the engine (I found one that is available locally), can I use that title to register the bike even though the frame VIN does not match? Or does the frame title always take precedence?

Looking to take my SV650 on an adventure. 9-12 days from Seattle down the PCH and then back around through Nevada, Utah, and Idaho. Looking for advice on bags, mods, and travel tips from more experienced bikers.

Edit: I just learned that my term "cowboy camping" is more often called boondocking.

For reference I have a sweet 2004 SV650 that I've never had any maintenance issues with and I've been riding for the last 7 years of my life. The longest trip I've done was an overnighter on the same bike but to prep for this gargantuan trip I'm planning on doing a quick weekend camping trip on the bike after I get the right mods setup (probably out to the Olympics) I am also a very experienced outdoorsman who hikes, backpacks, and "adventures" semi-regularly. I am already mentally and physically prepared for something like this and I am planning to plan my trip around 6-8 hour riding days with stretching/decompression breaks every 2 hours.

My main advice I am looking for and potentially answers to questions are - does anybody have good recommendations for saddle bag brands, and tank bags or even better if you have a sports bike you've mounted bags to any advice on that front. I've been trying to do some research but unlike my past experiences there doesn't seem to be a good "one size" solution to the question.

Additionally, I am looking for advice for how to pack motorcycle bags. When backpacking typically there is a very specific way you want to pack your bag to maximize enjoyment. I already know that balancing weight from left to right is essential for balance and comfort. Anything else?

Lastly, for anyone who has done the PCH like this... How bad of an idea is cowboy camping/roughing it with proper planning? I am less worried about doing it in the desert and east side of the mountains as I am more familiar with good areas to hide out but I am not sure what people in Oregon and California might be like towards cowboy campers/unscheduled tents in potentially unmarked campgrounds.

Any other advice is much appreciated. Ride safe y'all!

Just got an exhaust for my bike and want to get it tuned so I don’t mess up my engine as I’m still breaking it in.

What's the coldest weather you'll ride in?

Coming from a warmer climate, I didn't ever have to really put the bike away. Not wanting to have to winterize or anything (plus I don't have a garage), I'm trying to debate how cold is too cold to ride!

Mechanics in Tacoma

I’m looking to source a shop that can replace the cam chain tensioner in a Yamaha Super Tenere. I can do a lot of my own maintenance but something this important is better done by a professional than myself.

Bike buyer wants new bill of sale 6 months later

I sold my bike this last summer. Everything went fine and deal is done.

Now the buyer says he lost the bill of sale and wants me to sign another. He said he has the title. I offered to look for mine and send him a copy.

He is being extra nice saying I don’t need to and he can come to me to have me sign a new one.

What is going on? If he has a title why does he need a new bill of sale? Is he trying to pull a fast one or something? He said the new buyer is excited and he needs it soon.

I’m hesitant to sign a new bill of sale. I’m thinking he is trying to middle man a sale to a new owner as he never registered the bike because he is primarily track only. Any input?

Probably stolen Zero (or other electric) motor at encampment

Hope it's okay to post here. Just went by the 45th Ave exit going North on I-5. The exit to go to Petco by UW. Saw what looked like a Zero motorcycle up in the homeless area on the left. Southwest of the 45th and 7th intersection. Couldn't get to my phone to take photo. Maybe someone nearby could get a photo. Or if you're missing one then could check it out.
