Not getting out of my car any time soon

The morning show has made me cry a few times and I think today is one for the books. I’m pulled over to listen to Symphony no. 7 - but have been in tears since the America double header. I’m beyond grateful for this station and what it brings to my life. With KEXP and WNCW, I’m never without a soundtrack.

Love Vitamin D

I love and appreciate so many of the KEXP DJ's (Evie, Riz, Troy, Kevin) but recently found Vitamin D and can't stop listening to his shows. Just awesome!

Has there been a change or update to the iPhone app that if the KEXP app isn’t open or if you minimize it, it immediately turns off the app?

If so that’s a big bummer as I enjoy having it on in the background when I’m looking things up like cooking or other tasks. Thanks in advance if I’m just not realizing something.

Archive of KEXP posters?

I'm looking for a KEXP poster, the artist was South American and female, probably 10-15 years ago. I looked around KEXP.org but didn't find much. Any chance this rings a bell for anyone? TIA.

lisa leclair on the morning show

Seems like she's appeared out of nowhere but she's quickly become one of my favorite DJs. First heard her fill in for Eva a couple months back.

She consistently plays some of the most interesting music and almost all of it is new to me.

Great addition to the lineup rotation.

Was she doing a late night variety mix or specialty show?

is KEXP working on your Alexa device?

Been a few days now trying to tell Alexa to play K E X P and she seems to find it 'OK, here's NPR..." and then she says she's unable to find it.

Can someone send an audio guy/gal to Riz’s place lol

Love when he’s on the air, but the audio quality on his shows is noticeably worse than the rest of the station’s programming. Has anyone else noticed this?

Down In Mexico by The Coasters

Troy is one of my favourite KEXP djs to listen to- but does anyone else have to turn it off when he plays Down In Mexico by The Coasters? I remember listening to his Saturday show the first time he played it and was kind of like okay why but whatever. Fast forward to now and this song just feels kind of boring and dated (but like not in a charming or timeless way). Is it just me or does anyone else feel the same? Or am I just a Canadian who doesn’t get it lol?

Is KEXP like WFMU?

I know KEXP playlist is not nearly as weird, and eclectic. What i mean is, if DJ's has complete control over what they play in the shows?

FYI: Album art on website & mobile app

Originally posted in the KEXP Nerds Discord group earlier today by @KEXPJay

Hey all! Just a quick FYI. As some of you may be aware, the Internet Archive had a massive data breach (who would do this to them??), and they shut down their website to address. We use the IA to provide artwork on our website and mobile apps. Because of this, all artwork is unavailable to us, and won't display. Once the IA comes back online, artwork will appear again, but until then, it's just default images.

Here's an indie alt country playlist that I'm sure lots of KEXP listeners would appreciate. I'm open to any songs people suggest to add to it too.

Unable to stream sessions?

I can't seem to stream any live sessions from https://www.kexp.org/sessions/archive/ . I press play, but the audio doesn't stream. And I can't seem to play it no matter if it's my phone or laptop, or if I'm using wifi or cellular data. Does anyone else have the same problem? There are some sessions that are not on Youtube, and I enjoyed streaming them :(

Toured the Station Yesterday

Got a chance to tour the station with a small group of folks yesterday. Been a listener for decades and a donor for years and years. Never really took advantage of any perks other than getting a cool t-shirt every year or so. Wanted to share a few cools things about the tour.

  • The taste of the music director is basically the only controlling factor for what new music gets played. It was Don Gates (Slack) for 30 years until 2023. Of course, it's Chris Sanley and associate director Alex Ruder now. It was real brief, but I think we said hi to each of them in the hall.
  • Their physical library is pretty awesome. I've heard on-air mentions of how big it is, but it was really cool to see in person. The best part was how most everything seem to be original release, and had stickers all over them (especially the vinyl) with notes from DJs about what they thought. Original pressing (I think) of Daydream Nation: "The next Rush...?" Followed by something like "No way!"
  • I poked around the thousands upon thousands of CDs: they need more Weezer.
  • They use software called Dalet that has everything digitized. From music (of course) to the "I'm [blah] and you're listening to the Afternoon Show..." stuff. It seemed pretty neat.
  • When they don't have a digital version of a song a DJ wants to play, they grab it from the library and rip it right there.
  • Got to talk to Evie before Drive Time. Learned about how playlists are sort of curated: low/medium/high rotation, anchor songs, and the DJ's choice. Saw how she just googled a lot of "this day in music" stuff for things like birthdays, album releases, etc.

A few other things:

  • Troy was able to poke his head out and say hi. He was doing the Afternoon Show for Larry yesterday.
  • Their "cube farm" is pretty typical for an office setting. Amazing how many desks there are. A lot more people work there than I thought.
  • I found my plaque (Smashing Pumpkins lyric). Neat.
  • Every band gets a $500 stipend for a session. There's a TON of hardware for sessions, and the room is much smaller than I thought.
  • The green room has a wall where artists sign as they come through. Picture. They have a washer/dryer in there, heh. One cool thing going on right now is are artists writing love letters and pinning them up.
  • Heard the story of when The Smile came through for a session, Thom Yorke just walked through a packed gathering space, and nobody recognized him. The volunteer (forget her name) told us her giddy story about how she "touched his hand!" when she handed him some coffee/tea. Pretty funny.
  • They have a lot of framed gold records hung up. Saw several from Vampire Weekend. Saw their YouTube plaque for 1 mil subs.
  • I now understand what it means whenever I hear "down the hall" on the air (like where the live room is compared to the DJ booth).

Overall, it was a pretty cool experience. Katie Weiss was a pretty good guide. I really want to attend a live session when I can get out of work for an afternoon.

Best audio options

Hi, I stream KEXP pretty much all day and was wondering if there is a high quality way to listen. At the moment I use an iPad and the high quality option seems to be limited to 160kbps. On my android phone the option just says high quality without any more context. In my ideal work I would be able to listen at 320kbps. Any options out there that I could look into?
