Has the Chromecast option disappeared from the Android app?

I really hope they didn't remove it. Google Home on its own can't seem to understand how to play KEXP on all speakers. This was my only option.

EDIT: fix offered! Your wifi has to be on :)

Tech ? : KEXP app & CarPlay

When I’m listening to the KEXP app on Apple CarPlay — specifically to a Show Archive — when I turn off the car, and then restart, the archived show starts over again from the beginning. I’ll be running errands and listening to the same intro and 2-3 songs over and over again.

What am I doing wrong??

Praise be to Reverend Dollars!

The Incomparable indeed. This morning’s all vinyl party is SICK. I may be working in the predawn hours with way less sleep than I need, but banger after banger is keeping me from dying of sleep deprivation.

Fall fundraising gifts

Did anyone else not get their "thank you" items etc from the fall fundraising drive? Shipping label created months ago but nothing happened/never shipped? Or am I just unlucky?

Heard a great song this morning . . . anyone know who it was?

A little before 9 this morning, I heard a song on KEXP. A woman was singing about a shitty, maybe abusive relationship. The lyrics were very conversational and her voice was awesome. There was line that was something like "I can't tell my sister that we got back together" and another line about the voice he uses during arguments and watching a man turn into a boy.

Anyone know who this was? I would love to hear more from this artist

ETA: a little before 9am Pacific time

Larry Mizzel Jr.

I knew that Larry Mizzel Jr. was the son of son of music producer Larry Mizzel, but just learned during his set today that he’s related to Jam Master Jay (real name Jason William Mizell). Super cool to listen to his show and hear the family connections to the music he is playing.

2025 Full Watch - Week 3 Favorite: Liraz

As promised, here's my selection for this week! See my original post for context.

My weekly fav actually is a set that I've listened to about 50 times in the past. Liraz
The songs themselves are all amazing and after listening to their studio versions, I can say that this particular live session really brings them to a whole new level!

My honorary mention of the week goes to Klidur. I'm not a huge fan of choir singing in general (although I respect the craft), but this one was absolutely enchanting.

Finally here's a list of other particularly praiseworthy sets:

  • Liv.e
  • Georgia (her version of Running Up That Hill is really nice!)
  • Jupiter & Okwess
  • Amaarae
  • Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio
  • Songhoy Blues

See you next week!

Mom Show 2024?

Anyone know if there’s a way I can listen to the last Mom Show? I can’t listen to that when I’m at work and I didn’t feel emotionally ready to at the time having lost my mom in July in being knee deep in dealing with all that fun administrative stuff that follows a death. I’m not sure I feel ready now but I’d like to listen. Thanks for your help.

Watching every KEXP live set in 2025

Hi all, I've been listening to KEXP's sets for a few years now, and I figured it was time for me to listen to them all.

As of this writing, there are 2789 videos in the "KEXP Full Performance" playlist. As far as I can tell, they add one new video per week day, therefore we should be around 3049 by the end of 2025. However, since I've been listening to all new sets for about three years, I'm actually already at the 687th one. Therefore I only have about 2362 sets left to go through.

Since I mostly listen to those at work, that gives me 260 weekdays, or 240, excluding vacation days, for an average of 9.8 sets a day. For a conservative estimated average set length of 25 minutes, that makes for ~4.1 hours of music a day.

Sounds feasible.

I'll try to make weekly "Favorite of the Week" posts to create some discussion. What do you think??
In the meantime, my current top 10 is (without any particular order):

  • Mac DeMarco (all sets combined)
  • King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (all sets combined)
  • CHAI
  • Kikagaku Moyo
  • L'Eclair
  • Haru Nemuri
  • Songo
  • Antibalas
  • Subatomic Sound System (both sets combined)
  • Ora the Molecule

Where in the world is John Richards?

I find myself asking this a couple times a year. All apologies for that, but I haven't heard any mention of his whereabouts. Hopefully just a long vacation.

EDIT: so, yes. The man is on vacation climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. Thanks to all the fast responders.

Who Wants To Help Test The New App? iOS For Now

Hey All,

As some of you may know, we are in the final stages of development of our total refresh of our mobile apps. This was a ground up refresh written using a unified codebase so iOS and Android will now have the exact same look and feel.

We need a few folks who are familiar with the current apps who can help test. Right now it's just iOS users, but Android should be testing soon as well.

If so, please email me at software@kexp.org with the subject line "Help Test The New iOS App - Reddit" and please include your iCloud email address (needed for the TestFlight app which is part of testing). Once I get your request, I'll send you a wonderful form email listing all the steps to get things set up.

Please keep in mind this is still in development, and there will be bugs, but the lions share is completed and ready for your input.

Thanks and feel free to DM me with any questions or clarifications

Jay

KEXP Software Team

EDIT 1/7/2025: Please be sure to look at your iCloud email for the TestFlight invite. I know a lot of folks don't use that one as their primary email, so may not be nature to check it. Just a FYI, we will remove all uncompleted accounts in TestFlight after a couple days as we need to keep things tidy.

EDIT 1/8/2025 - Thanks for the huge interest in helping! We have all the testers we need for now. Truly appreciate the overwhelming interest!!

Standalone KEXP playlist 'dashboard'? Such a think exist?

Just thinking outloud...

I'd love to have a screen I could have on my desktop or shelf that does only one thing...show me what is presently playing on KEXP.

I know I can just keep a browser tab open or use a browser extension or the like but I'd love to be able to just glance up whenver I hear something I like and see what's playing...kind of like it does via carplay while in your car.

Anyone know of such a device? I assume the expensive music streamer appliances can do this...but was hoping maybe a standalone thing is out there (believe it or not...I actually prefer to listen to KEXP via HD radio).

KEXP introduced me to Kaito (UK). Sadly they are long defunct. Any high-energy noise-pop bands that I will enjoy to the same degree?

/u/kreinsch posted a link to the AAPB archive of older KEXP audio only performances earlier tonight. The archive has two performances by Kaito, one in 2002 and again in 2003 I remember hearing at least one of these live. I freaking loved them. I bought every CD and EP they released. They were brilliant. They send me right to my happy place. Pure joyous, raucous, senseless energy.

Sadly I am one of very few people on the planet who think this is the best music ever, so they never became the superstars they should have, and understandably broke up to, presumably, pursue a career in a field that makes more money than appealing to a bunch of weirdos who love pure happy noise.

I'm a lifelong fan of noisepop/noiserock and adjacent stuff, whether it is The Buzzcocks, Suicide, The Pixies, Devo, Sonic Youth, and so on. But does anyone have any other bands that I should be listening to if I love this? I also discovered Yoko Ono after listening to Kaito, and realizing that she was not horrible, as I always assumed she was. I haven't listened to a ton of her music, but I liked what I listened to. So what else should I be listening to?
