I’m a single mom considering moving to the Bronx. I currently live in Georgia but it’s just not working out and I don’t have any support here. I have more experience with Brooklyn and Connecticut (as a whole since that’s where we primarily grew up) but my family recently relocated to the Bronx and I love it! They live near Bay Plaza.

What areas would you suggest for a single mom with a toddler?

Mainly prioritizing safety and cleanliness. I would also love an area that has easy access to parks. Lastly would like a semi-easy commute to Manhattan. I do have a car.

My budget is around $1.6K for a one bedroom or studio. Willing to go a little higher though.

So im searching for apartments so I can move out by this time next year. My budget is around 930. I've been looking at craigslist and Facebook marketplace but I would live some advice on how to search for apartments in the bronx. This is my first time doing it.

I want to live in a good neighborhood that's pretty quiet. At the very least an area where people go to work and school during the day. I also need to be near transportation. I'm also open to areas outside the bronx or more north like Riverdale or Yonkers, but again I need access to transportation because I don't drive.

Any tips would be extremely helpful.

Edit: so as I've talked with another redditor based on my salary I can increase my budget. As I've said in my post this is the first time I'm doing this I would've assumed 930 for a studio in the Bronx was feasible but I guess not based on the comments. But let's be honest that pretty fucked up that people can't even get a decent audio under 1.2k. Like that's insane. I didn't grow up with a lot of money so I worry about spending half of my monthly earnings on just rent and struggling financially because I witnessed my mother struggling financially. I make around 3.1k monthly so I'd be willing to go up to 1.2k for a studio. I also plan on saving a lot of money in a year so that I'm not struggling my first few months.

And if so, where and what are they?

Hi! Me (27f) and my wife (25f) want to settle down in a couple years and start a family, probably in the Bronx to be close to my parents and relatives. I asked a similar question a few months ago regarding Pelham Bay, but we ultimately ruled it out for being too inaccessible by transit.

We started looking at Norwood, Van Cortland Village, Kingsbridge, and Woodlawn (Riverdale is gorgeous of course but way out of our price range if we ever want to buy). Out of all of them, Woodlawn and Norwood are probably our top picks. Norwood has more transit and seems less isolated with more to do, but Woodlawn is beautiful and has more of a "village" feel, which we love. Our only concern is diversity, being an interracial lesbian couple in what seems like a very Irish neighborhood. It seems like the racial/ethnic diversity there is increasing, but we especially don't want our kids to feel ostracized for not being Irish AND having two moms.

Realistically there's homophobia everywhere, and we don't need there to be rainbow flags all over the place, but we wouldn't want to feel like the only gay couple in the neighborhood, or have people be hateful towards our children.

If you live there or grew up/went to school there, do you know any LGBTQ+ people or same sex couples (especially with kids), and how are/were they treated? Do you otherwise like Woodlawn? And what are your thoughts on the other neighborhoods in the area?
