We are a neighborhood of 170,000 people in the most-diverse county in the United States. This is a highly moderated sub.
The sub-reddit for one of the best neighborhoods in New York City.
Yes, we hear that helicopter, too. No, we don't know what it is.

I'm moving soon (still within Astoria), and the new place has a ceiling curtain track, which I've never seen or used before. I'm definitely in need of professional help with installing curtains. Any recommendations?
Anyone recommend a cab/car service to get to LaGuardia airport? Need to get there by 5:30am Tuesday. I don’t want to spend a lot of money. Any recommendations would be appreciated

My lease ended September 1, but my landlord didn’t send me a new lease until November 1, conveniently when he was allowed to increase by 2.5%. Although I think this is fucked up, I don’t think he’s done anything technically wrong and I really love my apartment so I’m willing to pay the 2.5% but I’m reading the lease and there’s a provision that just has peaked my curiosity.
There’s a section that says tenants have to pay for hot water, landlord pays for cold water only. My impression was under NYC law, landlords have to provide heat and hot water, but does this mean provide only and not pay for?
Hi all! About a year ago, I posted about starting a card games meetup and I'm happy to say, that with some recruits from this very sub, we have managed to keep this going as a weekly meetup. Our next meetup will be at Oliver's on 12/4 at 6:30pm.
Now, I'd like to welcome additional players to ensure we can keep this going!
This is a semi-competitive but lighthearted, casual get together, where we play several classic card games throughout the night and award points for each game and bestow a "crown" to the champion of game night. All this, while enjoying drinks and food.
If you're interested in joining, here's a link to the newly created discord - https://discord.gg/Ag9JEuQk
Please do introduce yourself, RSVP to the next meetup, and choose some roles for the games you are interested in!
Below are some of the games we have been playing, but we're always open to new ones that anyone would like to teach us. You can learn any games you don't know.
Hearts - Some of you may remember playing this on your computer and only ever trying to shoot the moon. That's all I try to do anyway.
Oh Hell - The most chaotic trick taking game for large groups! This has become the centerpiece of game night, and while there's certainly a lot of strategy, one person each round will always miss their bid no matter what due to their play or the play of others, and all you can do is say "oh, hell!"
Cribbage - Really great and quirky game for two players but can be played with more as well. Rules are mostly unchanged since 1600s as it's stood the test of time. Fun fact: At one point, this was the only game you could legally play for money in pubs in the UK!
Euchre - A fast paced trick taking game I love that is popular in the midwest and that I play despite only ever living in NYC. Lots of fun strategy and competive games once you've learned the basics.
Pitch - A game popular in the northeast that can be played by teams or in a cuthroat manner. A trick taking game with lots of variance where your score can go up or down very quickly.
We've also played some games of spades, Big two (Chinese poker), Rummy 500 and are slowly trying to get some Bridge action going.
Let me know if you have any questions!
Has anyone seen any restaurant/diner in the area that serves hoecakes? Hoecakes are corn pancakes and I think they’re called Jonny cakes in the northeast. Have a craving for them but haven’t been able to find them. Thanks everyone!
Hi everyone, I am new in the neighborhood. Could you please suggest some nice spots for studying?
Are there any upcoming events where we could get a family picture with Santa?
I have a few USB zip drives that I would love to donate. Does anyone know of any organizations that take this sort of thing? Thanks!
EDIT: I mean sticks, not actual drives.

We’ve been living in our apartment for 2 years now. It’s always been cold in the winter (usually around 60 degrees). This year, our landlord didn’t turn the heat on until we asked him to earlier this month.
Our landlord is usually responsive and sends maintenance after we text him a few times. He will tell us maintenance is coming but half the time they don’t until he harasses them so we know it’s typically a few days from when our landlord responds that maintenance will actually show up. When they do come, it’s better for a while but then it gets cold again and the cycle repeats. There hasn’t been a permanent solution to the heat problem.
Everything else in our apartment is great so we put up with it. We have a good relationship with our landlord otherwise.
Lately it’s been way colder than usual, thermostat read in the lower 50’s this morning. Our landlord has been ignoring us for over a week despite multiple texts. I understand it’s a holiday weekend and again he’s usually responsive, but it’s been super cold for days now and we’re starting to get sick.
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
Hey fellow Astorians, I recently launched a small online shop to celebrate our hometown pride with custom tees, caps, tote bags and even onesies. I’d love for you to check it out! Here’s the link:

Hello, I am looking for new laundry to me. I went to one closer to 31st and saw a bug. I want a clean laundry with good clean space. Thank you.
Heyy everyone, Any idea what bar can be playin the match tomorrow?
I'm planning a family reunion months in advance, and I'm looking for a place I can reserve for either a sit down lunch or dinner. We will be about 50ish people, and the place needs to allow catering from a different vendor (we have dietary restrictions). My budget for the venue is $1,000. I hope that is doable. I'm hoping for a spring or summer event, and I'm flexible on the location as well (as far as long island). TIA!
Edit: someone mentioned parks. Are there any parks that allow tents, tables, and chairs?
Hello all, I would like to either bake together or exchange baking ideas online at least. I am absolutely HOOKED on the DOG SAFE cinnamon treats but cannot find them anywhere again. I have recipe to share and we exchange ideas. Let me know if you're interested!
Just a heads up, went to Brooklyn Bagel on Ditmars last Saturday and there was blood (confirmed via test as of today) on my roll.
Beware, they tried to pass it off as lipstick (wasn't wearing any makeup). They also kept their own sample of the roll to test and I haven't heard back from them. I did eat more than half the roll before noticing the bright red dots, so obviously extremely grossed out and don't want this to happen to someone else.
I will be going there tomorrow to let them know it was in fact blood.
Hey, I’m hosting a Beatles night at the Shillelagh Tavern. It’ll have a bunch of local artists playing their favorite songs, and karaoke is on afterward with Jack Boice.
This might be the first in a series so if you’re musically inclined and want to meet the group of musicians, we’ll have a jam going at the end for impromptu collaborations. Would love to throw another one if this is successful!
Come hang at the Shillelagh tonight 🍺
If you go to Brooklyn Boulder’s and have a cc on file double check your statements. Just noticed they have been double billing us for years to the tune of several thousand dollars. It’s been a little bit at a time so it was hard to notice. Make things worse after we called it to their attention they admitted the mistake but have continued to double bill. It seems they can’t figure out how to actually fix the problem.
Been slacking a bit lately (not a buff or anything but want to be back 2-3x/wk). I am usually free weeknights around 6-8 pm and more free weekends. Do arms, legs, chest/shoulder, some cardio- also want to try new machines. 24 m. Feel free to dm
It’s the best thing I’ve ever had.
I have 2 general admission tickets and tickets to a tour of the Jim Henson exhibit at the Museum of the Moving Image in LIC today 11/30 at 3pm but I have a bad migraine so I'm not gonna make it.
Anyone want the tickets? Comment here and message me your email address and I can forward you the tickets if you want
ETA: Tickets have been redistributed! Thanks y'all!
