Cousin relocating from another country to Staten Island

Hello all! My cousin was born in America but has never lived in America just born here and left, and she’s turning 18 she wants to move to Staten Island, she cannot live with me and doesn’t have any money. Is there any place on the island which can help her with a place to live in, food and give her money? She keeps telling me that America gives people free stuff who are citizens I said that’s not true I figured I would ask around, does anyone know if someone gets FAFSA if their entire tuition is free? TIA

Visiting Charleston on the South Shore of Staten Island

This week, for my project photographing every neighborhood in NYC, I wrote about Charleston on the South Shore of Staten Island. Back in the late 19th century, the neighborhood was home to the Kreischer Brick Works, churning out 20,000 bricks daily as the heart of the East Coast's firebrick-making industry.

https://preview.redd.it/la3ehbq8xige1.jpg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4c6f44717527a38c2cb5cdd46d014aa57bb8cf7f

Balthasar Kreischer, a Bavarian immigrant, arrived in NYC in 1836, inspired, he said, to "help rebuild the burned city" after the Great Fire of 1835. After discovering Charleston's rich clay deposits, he bought a large parcel of land and built a brickworks factory, transforming the rural enclave into a bustling company town renamed Kreischerville.

Besides the factory, the brick baron built housing for his workers (mostly German immigrants), a post office, and a mansion for himself and matching ones for his sons.

One of the mansions belonged to his son Edward Kreischer, who was found dead under mysterious circumstances in 1894. After that mansion burned down in the 1930s, the remaining one became ground zero for ghost hunters investigating supposed paranormal activity tied to the Kreischer family. In 2005, the home was the site of a brutal mob hit involving the Bonanno crime family, several hacksaws, and a furnace

Kreischer Mansion

Today, Charleston feels far removed from its bustling industrial past. A 1961 zoning change from residential to manufacturing drove many residents away, leaving behind few relics of its brick-making glory days. But glimpses of the neighborhood's German heritage and industrial history remain: you can still get some schnitzel and a stein at Killmeyer's Bavarian Inn, walk along the shoreline that used to be home to the Kreischer factory or visit the site of the old clay quarries, now Clay Pit Ponds Park.

If you disapprove of the bills getting passed by Congress right now, Staten Island, you have the power to do something about it!

I don't claim to know the politics of Staten Island, however, on the national level I know even some Trump supporters have been shocked and put off by some of the legislation and actions going through Congress right now. Republican representatives and senators are backing Trump's bills without a second for sensibility, and some states are introducing bills that break the foundations of our democratic republic (Source). Incriminating legislators for voting on any subject matter weakens our republic (in this case it meant imprisoning politicians who voted for immigrant sanctuary policies, but this opens the door for incriminating politicians for any opposition toward the administration....i.e. authoritarianism). The job of representatives is to represent their constituents—that is what makes it a republic. To jail them for voting any which way ties the hands of our representatives, and it ties the hands of its constituents.

My point is! The House of Representatives has a very narrow margin, with 218 Republicans and 215 Democrats. If you disapprove of the movements made by your representatives, speak up! Nicole Malliotakis is your Republican representative, make sure she represents you in Congress!

If you know who your representative is but you are unable to contact them using their contact form, the Clerk of the House maintains addresses and phone numbers of all House members and Committees, or you may call (202) 224-3121 for the U.S. House switchboard operator.

I notice this subreddit does not mention politics very often, but in this unprecedented time in history, I think it's necessary to start a conversation!

(Note: Though it may seem pointless and hopeless, if you ever find yourself wallowing in the state of things, I suggest making the effort anyhow—it may help you! Hopelessness reproduces hopelessness, and vice versa, hope inspires hope. Even if you don't believe it will change the outcome, at least you can know you did what you could. Lead by example, and perhaps you'll incidentally inspire others to do so. I'll chill out with the hopium, but keep it in mind!)

Best neighborhood to move to?

Hi! My fiancé and I are considering moving from South Brooklyn to Staten Island, but are totally lost when it comes to narrowing down our search to specific neighborhoods. Our two biggest priorities are:

  1. Easy access to the ferry

  2. Proximity to green space or water

  3. Relatively safe

What neighborhoods should we consider looking in? Thank you in advance!

Bakeries that sell DF/vegan items on the island?

Hey all, one of my friends has a birthday coming up, and they’re legitimately lactose intolerant. Does anyone know of any bakery that sells tasty treats that offer dairy free/vegan options? Thanks!

Where to post when looking for a nanny

Looking for a mostly full time nanny when we are both back to work. I made a post on care dot com before and was getting people from Manhattan and even PA applying.

Ideally looking for someone local. Trying to find a way to post to local colleges like CSI or Wagner

Recommendations for physical therapists?

Anyone know of any good PTs on the island who can do in-home therapy for senior citizens with Parkinson’s or related conditions? I’m assuming this type of service might not necessarily be covered by insurance but willing to pay out of pocket depending on the cost.

Edit: Thanks all for the recs!

Found IPhone

Found an iPhone in the midland beach area. It has a pretty unique cover. Describe it and we’ll figure out how to get it back to you. Looks like it was erased by owner but was still at half power when I picked it up.

Fighting for a public parking space?

Top of the morning islanders!

Today I had the misfortune of having a verbal fight against one of my neighbors (dead end street) by the south shore.

The issue? I parked in front of his house while he left for work (I work night shift) so, I thought i blocked the driveway and mailbox but nope.

After going back and forth with his derogatory insults (I tried to de escalate and being polite) he was not having it with my answers.

Told him to call the cops and the tow truck if Im blocking his driveway, but he refused because he knows this was a public street.

As I remained calmed, and he was trying to walk away, told him “God bless you” and then he couldn’t handle that.

Like… why fight for a piece of public street at 5 am? The dude was around 40-50ish probably Italian.

Note: the gentleman’s body language showed he was ready for a fist fight. Me personally i would take the hit, I know where he lives so escalating wouldn’t work out for him at all.

Dashcam Installation

Listen, listen, yeah I could probably go on YouTube and figure out how to use the hardwire kit I bought myself to hook up my dashcam and whatnot. But it’s cold out, and I’m nervous I’ll fuck something up.

So, if anyone has any recommendations of any shops that will do a hardwire installation for your dashcam please lemme know! Especially if you’ve been to them before and have some good words to say about ‘em. Thanks! :)

Staten Island commutes: lessons learned

Hi. Yesterday I asked Islanders to tell me about their commutes (post link below)

I got lots of detailed responses, and decided to add up some of the detailed information from them (though not everyone answered every component of my question, so there are lots of missing answers).

Nonetheless, here is a little of what I have learned so far:

The big takeaway is that commute from SI face a rough road, leaving me very surprised that SI politicians do not win or lose elections based solely on what they do, or fail to do, to improve direct, fast transit access to centers of employment, because Staten Islanders apparently sacrifice so much time to access their jobs.

I got 41 responses detailed enough to be included so far:

12 commutes are car-only (3 within SI; 6 to Brooklyn; 2 to Manhattan, and 1 each to Qns, NJ and Westchester). Most off-island commuters mentioned very early-morning departures. Those who commute by car off-island say the trip takes an average of 37 minutes, but need to allot an average of 66 minutes for an on-time arrival.

29 commutes involve public transit. Of those, 4 involve one leg in a private car (to drive to SI or Fast Ferry, or Xbus).

Of two respondents who use the "fast ferry", both start their journeys in a private car, and achieve an expected commute shorter than an hour.

Mass transit commuters average 2.2 'seats'. Express busses offered the only 1-seat public transit journeys to off-island destinations. One commuter has a 4-seat journey of local bus to SIR to SI ferry to subway. Off-island commutes without an express bus have an average of 2.58 'seats'.

Mass-transit commuters travel to SI (1), Brooklyn (6), Manhattan (20) and Queens (2)

Folks who live in St. George and work walking distance/a few subway stops from Whitehall can have expected commutes shorter than an hour.

Mass transit commuters report an average of 72 minutes for a seamless, nothing-went-wrong commute. Those who reported extra time often needed to ensure timeliness give an average of 100 minutes, and a "very bad day" average of 125 minutes, with 6 people reporting worse-case travel times of 2.5 hours or more, and one up to 3.5 hours. Many of these long, precarious commutes are "inter-peripheral", going against the general Manhattan-centric organization of NYC public transit, with normal travel times of 120 minutes (further suggesting the need for more direct transit links from SI to many more destinations in Brooklyn and Queens.)

edit: clarity; missing number, added two more responses

How long is your commute, and how much extra time do you need just in case?

I recently posted this question on r/AskNYC and got almost 70 responses, but I don't think any came from Staten Island. I'm posting it here because Staten Islanders have some of the longest commutes in the U.S., but details are thin, and the sorts of multi-modal commutes that SI-ers often have are especially vulnerable to delay (e.g. missing a bus by ten seconds often means missing a ferry by half an hour). So: please tell me about your commute!

_____________________

How long does your commute actually take? And by what mode or modes? (subway, bus, ferry, foot, bike, car)?, Plus how much extra time you need to definitely arrive at your work/school/etc by the certain time? And from approximately where to where?

Example: Sunset Park to East 30's, near 1st Ave: - walk-subway-long walk or bus. 60 min travel time, requires 75 minutes in case of delay.

Thanks!

Background: The census data for NYC indicates an average commute time for each NYC census tract. But that data just averages the commutes of, say, one local who might commute for 1.5 hours to another borough along with her two neighbors who might take a 12 minute bus ride. The average of these - 38 minutes - tells us nothing about the lousy experience of the first commuter, or the great routine for the other two. Also, by failing to include how much time people need to devote to commutes in case of a missed connection or transit delay, we don't really know what kind of impact transit disruptions have on everyday experience.

Looking to build a regular Thursday skate at Inman Sports Complex in Edison. 11AM to 12:30.

Right now we have a core of 5 guys who can regularly do this.

We’re all splitting cost (125 for the 90 min). Goalies free.

I know it’s daytime but if any of you guys work off hours/days or are retired and looking for some good exercise it’s great. I’m 47, two guys 40 and a couple late 20s. Level is decent, but really we’d welcome anyone.
