Hi all. Apparently, PSEG has installed smart meters in our condo building and now we are getting crazy bills in winter. My last 2 bills both were over $930/month and my neighbor's (who lives alone in her apartment and does not turn on heat in 2 of her rooms at all) got a bill for $1,400. I called PSEG and they started to read data to me trying to convince me that I'm heating like crazy and I told them listen lady, you basically are only reading to me what YOUR meter tells you. YOUR meter may have a software issue or another issue and generates absolutely crazy bills for us while we still are freezing here scared to even turn on the heat! If you use common sense this absolutely makes no sense. Especially as I turn heat off when going to work. They said they'd send a technician to look at it but I'd like to hear from the general public what would you do? Who is able to independently confirm whether or not their meters are adjusted and the reading speed is too high? Would it make sense to just switch to another company - do you think they would install their own meters? Not sure how this works. Thank you for your thoughts.

Lately this subreddit has become incredibly divisive, as has the world around us but this subreddit for a while was a great place full of discussion and respect but this has taken a very serious nose dive recently and we are going to be more aggressive with the rules we have in place, specifically rules 1 and 4.

• This is obviously difficult to resolve given the current politcal climate but we need to make sure we don't turn this subreddit into a one sided one. I know people exist in the middle, the left, the right, the fringes, everywhere, but we can't have this subreddit be taken over by one type of side and create an atmosphere of isolating the other side of inciting them to respond in a vengeful way. Some political posts will be tolerated but ones without verifiable information or ones that seem unnecessarily against the other side will be removed as well.

This will be updated as time goes on but please try making this a better place despite all the differences we have, think before you post or comment. We do have a discord as well if you'd like to speak to someone on there directly to move it off of here so this doesn't become a platform for arguing and anger, the world has enough of that.

SO SORRY! I didn't mean to appear "ritzy" - I didn't know what to call this area instead of saying something like "hey, anywhere around old tappan, down to Cresskill, over to Ridgewood....." etc. I wouldn't know north from south even with a compass, tbh..... Moving Ridgewood & need to commute to NYC. I can tolerate bus and train both ok.

I commute Monday and Friday and timed this 5 times in morning consistently.

Commuting Veterans :) Which one you would chose and why ? Train needs Secaucus transfer.

Beware, and please don't judge my mom - the way she explained it, this was a very convincing and terrifying scam. Also, beware of calls from "Bergen County Sheriff's Dept."

Yersterday my 66 y/o mom was home alone and received a call on her cell from a number labeled "BERGEN COUNTY SHERRIFF". When she picked up, a man on the line convinced her he was with the department and had a warrant for her arrest. It was some line about a missed jury duty notice and subsequent missed court appearance. He directed her to the BANK where he instructed her ON THE PHONE to withdraw her ENTIRE ACCOUNT and set it for "bond" -

This is what I think is unconscionable - that the bank would, in this day and age, ALLOW a distressed older woman who is visibly being coerced on the PHONE to withdraw an amount EXCEEDING TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS!!

-So now they instructed her on the phone meet the "bail bondsman" in a third location, where he took the money from her and communication broke down.

The police said that they know who this person is and have video from this interaction but I'm wondering what the best way would be for her to acquire legal representation, possibly against the bank - I find it extremely negligent that they would allow this to happen repeatedly to folks in the area as evidenced by the police's thorough knowledge about this case due to prior instances.

There must be safeguards in place that were neglected or avoided in this case.

My heart hurts for my mother, who is now without the money she needs to pay her bills this winter, and for all the other people falling victim to this particularly gutless and shameful type of scam.

Looking back she feels very foolish and ashamed for "falling for it" - but I can't blame her - the level of technology these people were able to spoof in order to show "proof" is incredible.

Warn others about this - especially the older folks in your life - and remind them that if someone suspicious is ever on the phone they have the right to hang up and reach out for help.

Even if my mom had a warrant I would've helped her out of it with no shame or guilt.
