Dear CitiBike/Lyft/Motivate/DOT,
Hello there. I just got back from Boston and it cost me $3 to use their bike share. Three dollars.
I had the option to walk 20 minutes or ride a bike for 6 minutes. (Mass Convention Center area to South Station). Easy choice.
That same ride would set me back $4.79 here in the great New Yawk. Reflecting on that, that's why I rarely ride Citibike after all these years. I'd rather hoof it or ride my own bike, and use that extra buck seventy-nine for a slice of 2002 pizza. Priorities, people.
Sincerely, Nickel-and-Dimin' Nicky
Hey, ya'll. My right shifter stopped working today (Shimano Ultegra, perhaps the shifting set is from '98 or '99; they look pretty banged up tbh); it feels stuck and won't move, almost as if it is frozen/jammed. A local bike shop suggested I replace the enitre shifting system, which will cost $260 for the parts of a new Shimano Sora 3x9 set (shifters, front/rear derailleur, ?new chain) + fee for labor (~$60 bucks).
I am looking online and have found the shifters alone cost ~$180-200. Do you think it's worth it or am I getting duped? Any advice appreciated, TIA!
Recently lost about 30 pounds and have started biking to work from Bushwick to lower Manhattan every day. I was hoping my recent weight loss would have helped a bit with the commute, but getting up the bridges is miserable.
Feeling a bit discouraged, does it get easier? I am still working on my health and exercise and diet, so of course I know rationally it will get easier.
But does anyone have any motivation to share? Or tips to get better at getting up the big hills?
I ride to midtown pretty much everyday for work and it's becoming trickier and trickier to find a spot to park the bike. Does anyone knows what's up with all those bikes? Most of them look like abandoned bikes from delivery guys.
Are there any stores that sell e-bike batteries in NYC? New to e-bikes and not sure if it's even legal to them anywhere.
9AM today, In lieu of a recent crash and cyclists being ticketed in the park - Zero dudes in lycra. None. I did just 2 little laps, 30 mins, but saw not one single spandex-clad cyclist doing laps this morning.
I come in peace, lycra people - but it was crazy not to see a pack, a pair, a single such lap cyclist in the park this morning.
There was a cop car by the Lincoln Rd. entrance. Empty with the windows down and wipers on, but a car was there. And a sign shortly after asking for you to call 1-800-577-TIPS if you have any info about the 5.13.24 crash.
Is it crazy to think that we should be willing to acknowledge the lights when there's a bunch of other people around? I think that ticketing cyclists after a crash is a waste of NYPD resource and it pisses me off. I also run the reds when it's safe to do so, I think. But does no one actually want to show up to do laps when the rules are being enforced? I personally will time the lights and enjoy my ride if I must.
I’ll be going to a show at Brooklyn Steel soon and from what I last remember the area is pretty industrial. Does anyone know if the venue has a bike rack/somewhere nearby I can lock up and not be too worried?
I don’t have a fancy bike at all, but I did get my tires slashed recently (vandalism, not vengeance) so I’m trying to be extra careful.
Thank you!
I was riding through prospect park yesterday at around 7:45 pm. It was a rainy day yesterday so the park was relatively empty and I just wanted a little exercise after work. I got to a stoplight on the east side of the park, saw other cyclists going through the red light, looked both ways (again, not many people around) and rode through the light. About 30 seconds later a NYPD car pulled up next to me and told me to pull over. After a long wait the kid emerged from the car with a summons ($278). While he was writing my ticket at least 10 scooters without plates zoomed by us. But they don’t care. Honestly man I’m done with this city and the NYPD. There is so much utter nonsense and crime going on in the city and they target law abiding citizens as purely a source of revenue. I’m over it. Rant over. Thank you.
BK half is this Saturday (May 18), will we be able to bike it before it starts? Can’t find anything online but looks like the roads will be closed starting at 6 am at the latest
So I am finally moving out of my apartment and into a house. And with that house, a garage. My gf is very happy my bikes are going to be out of sight.
Now the question is, what do I buy to fill up all of this space? I know a bike stand is a must, but what kind? And what other things should I be looking into now that I have room?
Has nyc always been this windy and rainy? I’ve lived here my whole life, and I feel like everyday there’s some crazy weather anomaly, whether it be rain, wind, cold, heat. Never a regular day
anyone hosting a bike washing party anytime soon?
i'm in a multi floor North Brooklyn walk up and don't have access to a hose. my Brompton chain at starting to look like Armus, and this baby need a solid spring/summer degrease. i'd do it in the tub, but we have a baby at home...
i have cleaning supplies, brushes, & lube to share.
photo for algorithm juice.
EDIT: someone pointed out below why this is probably wrong https://old.reddit.com/r/NYCbike/comments/1ct1g4n/a_legal_argument_for_vtl_tickets_in_prospect_park/l4az0o8/
If you got a ticket from the NYPD for violating some part of VTL 1100, e.g. 1111(d)(1) for a red light, you may have a legal defense. Bear in mind traffic courts are of the kangaroo variety, so there's a good chance you'd have to appeal 1+ times to get a court to agree, but here goes ...
VTL 1100 applies to
public highways, private roads open to public motor vehicle traffic
Public highways are defined under VAT 118 as
The entire width between the boundary lines of every way publicly maintained when any part thereof is open to the use of the public for purposes of vehicular travel
What's a vehicle? Well, under VAT 159 it is defined as
Every device in, upon, or by which any person or property is or may be transported or drawn upon a highway, except devices moved by human power
So is the loop in prospect Park open to public vehicular traffic? No, the answer is definitely no according to parks website
Park Drives are closed at all times to private and unauthorized vehicles, but actively utilized by park operations vehicles.
I rest my case ... Lol ok, but seriously some lawyer can probably tell me why this is wrong.
I just got a ticket 10 mins ago for running a red in the prospect park. I slowed down, let a woman and a dog walk in the crosswalk and then proceeded and they ticketed me. There was almost no one in the park because it was pouring. They made me wait in the rain (and I fell trying to pull over bc I'm on my husband's bike and I got nervous) for about 15 mins while they wrote my ticket.
During that time a private car was driving the wrong way through the park and through the red light, which they couldn't see because they were driving the wrong way. The cops also stopped them but then let her go because she "didn't know she was going the wrong way." I said I didn't know I had to stay stopped if no one is around and they told me too bad and handed me the ticket, letting her continue to drive the wrong way towards the 3rd st entrance.
I told them if they wanted to actually make a difference they should do it on a day when people are actually using the park.
The irony is that I always always stop for pedestrians in crosswalks in the park. So much that I have had the spandex crowd yell at me and flip me off for slowing or stopping and messing up their pack. I have been biking in the park for nearly 20 years and have been stopping for peds for that entire time..
Be careful out there. Especially of they purple Honda going the wrong direction in the middle of the loop (the bike area )
Was on a run this morning doing the Prospect Park loop. It’s 10:30 and raining so there was about 25 people total I passed on a 3+ mile full loop. A biker (non e-bike) passes me casually going about 10 MPH. No helmet (dumb) and texting with one hand on the grips (dumber please don’t do it). About a minute later a cop car passes me, pulls up behind the texter and pulls them over. They get out and it looks like they’re going to write him a ticket. I pass them and see another support police car drive the wrong way on the loop presumably to “backup” the other car that’s ticketing the biker. Thank you for keeping our streets safe NYPD, nothing could be a better use of your time.
Anyone have experience doing a frame-up build in brooklyn and can mention if their bike shop did a good job? and how much it cost
Looking to put together a 90s italian steel frame
Few pleasures like this
Bike lanes finally empty
Oh shit, socks be wet
I was curious to know what it'd be like to ride to the Mets Stadium since my friend and I are planning to ride there in the near future.
To put it into detail, we're coming from the Marble Hill/Riverdale area in The Bronx.
Hey folks, I'm a bit shaken up and looking for some advice on what to do.
I had just taken a Citi Bike out of the dock on a one lane street in the West Village and was in the process of biking over to the bike lane when a car turned left onto the road. They honked at me, and I continued going left to try to get in the bike lane. At that point, they floored it and rammed me with their car from behind. I was knocked off the bike and hit the pavement but luckily, they stopped before hitting me. They didn't get out of their car and eventually reversed out of the street and sped away.
I got their license plate, car description, had witnesses at the scene, and filed a police report. They also called an ambulance, but I decided not to go to the hospital since I wasn't seriously injured (just scrapes on my elbow and hip and rips in my pants).
I just got home and I'm feeling pretty rattled. I've been biking daily in the city for 3 years and have never had anything like this happen to me before. I don't know if there's any immediate action I should take, so I'm looking for general advice and commiseration. Thanks all and cheers.
Anyone in Queens know how to fix a flat tire on an electric bike? I need it fixed tomorrow, Wednesday definitely will pay. Dm me.
Turned right on Ashland from Dekalb (going towards Myrtle) in the new, green, two-lane bike lane this morning. A maintenance/construction vehicle going the same direction turned through the two bike lanes to go up the the driveway there and accelerated without looking. I had no time to react and was struck.
Police came and made a report (got the license and registration for the driver), and I ended up going to Brooklyn Hospital. Luckily nothing is broken but I’m pretty banged up, and so is my bicycle.
Been cycling for most of my life and this is the worst accident I’ve been in.. thanks in advance. Stay safe out there!
Hi! I usually bike to work because we have great bike storage there. I’ve been summoned for jury duty and want to bike there but does anyone know if there are bike racks near the Brooklyn Supreme Court building (360 Adams St) or just like in general what the sitch is/is this a good idea? Any info is appreciated!!! It would be so much faster than taking the subway for me.
I sure don’t wanna jinx it, but it appears that Citibike actually listened to complaints and posts and feedback and has now reestablished concierge stations downtown in the morning. Many folks reported that they were unable to dock anywhere downtown south of Canal because of totally overcrowded stations. This is on Wall and Water and they have a concierge there now to always ensure open slots.
Hi everyone,
I'm a long time Central Park bike rider but I've always ridden on a Citibike.
Ive amasssed atleast > $2000 in charges riding citi bike in Central Park alone (multiple loops).
I've always wondered how some folks go faster than me even when I am using an electric citi bike. My best guess is they have lighter, more efficient bikes.
Can you please recommend a bike that I should purchase?
I'm pretty fit, like to cycle and lift weights and I want to stay up with some of the old guys that keep passing me by in my citi bike!!
To be clear, I'm not looking for an electric bike. I want a bike that is light, comfortable and will continue to challenge me when I exercise.
Hi all, I’ve seen some older posts with a similar topic but wanted to see what my best options are today. I am a beginner rider looking for a bike to ride throughout manhattan that is easy to store in my apartment. My budget is around $300 and I want something foldable that takes up the least amount of space possible.
So far I’ve seen the Zizzo Campo and Dahon Suv D6, but I’m open to other suggestions as well! Additionally if anyone has seen any storage box/container to store the bike, that would be great.
